Ty for really nailing this topic. You're the first RC Channel that I've seen that has been brave enough to really call it as it is....I feel like Redcat has really done a fantastic job and deserves huge praise and support from the RC Community. Redcat has some industry firsts that have blazed the way for others to follow. I.E. partnering with first class companies to release a rig with top of the line aftermarket servo's and esc/motor setups. Great vid.
Thanks buddy! I've now been spending time with this truck, and the more I see the more I like it! Just the adjustments you can do to this truck should make tinkering people giddy!! Time will tell about its durability, but redcat has come along way and iam glad they are throwing out capable rigs at a good price! And I also agree with the team ups on multiple vehicles to do first of its kind vehicle setups!! 😆😆

I love my gen7 sport. Nobody ever mentioned a v2 of the gen7. Mine had the high clearance steering and regular foams already, not sure what else. Put metal trans gears and lockers, and some duratrax deep woods. Haven't had any issues for a year and a half. Was totally worth the price. Can't wait til my gen8 arrives. Been wanting one for a long time. And the price is definitely right. $290 on some websites right now. The wife ordered me one from summit racing for $288 with free shipping. Great review/rant 👍👍

I recently bought a Gen8 V2 from Amain witch coupon code, $275 shipped to my door. Yeah, the rig is the MOST scale looking crawler, tires kinda suck, radio doesn't have a 3rd channel switch.. But.. It has a WELL MADE lexan body with a ton of detail, inner fender wells, fender flares, mirrors, THICK plastic bumpers, metal gears, portal axles, no body pins, the list of things I love go on and on. For the asking price of $300, I don't know how Redcat can afford to sell this RTR for that price! The fact that Redcat made all these changes and didn't charge more for the V2 over the the first gen is amazing to me. I love this crawler, and I will upgrade a couple of things, but it doesn't need much!
Hello Sherman 👋, redcat has really impressed me over the last few years, what you get for what you pay blows me away!! All the metal parts alone! Most big company's say they have to use plastic to keep prices down and all plastic is still 100 to 150 more!! It crawls very well right now but as you say just a little bit more and this thing will be a major performer!!😁 thanks for commenting!!
I had a Gen 7 sport. It was fun and I enjoyed moding it. This is night & day difference in quality and detail. I'm a 42 year old dad with kids. I'm never going to be the type of guy who spends $600 on a toy solely myself as a family man. The fact that Redcat offers a crawler that looks this good with these much to offer for $329 is nothing short of amazing. I think there are two different types of crawlers. Trail rig crawlers and competition crawlers. For the trail, a rig that goes a little faster is nice & fun. Furthermore, just about any crawler will do. For competition crawlers, you want that thing at a snail's pace with a lot of torque. Furthermore, you need a body that isn't top heavy and won't snag on rocks very easily. Basically you sacrifice scale somewhat for performance. I didn't think a comp was all it was cracked up to be. Struck me as a little as pay to win or pay to just remain competitive. Anyways I digress. This is the best dollar for dollar value in RC crawling. Period point blank.
Thanks steve for sharing! I Agee with the kid point, I have 4 and when they were still at home I only had a few rc, mostly kits I had built, some with the kids! Gerry what a great review 👍😁 I really like that scout looking body!! Man and the price point!! You are right on brother!! Can't wait see how you detail this bad boy up! I may have get one here soon as my budget will allow!! I just got that Cross Country Jeep from Rc4wd,, I am very impressed with it so far Gerry!
Thanks evin!! So far iam very pleased with the construction! Detailing is underway, but I've also been taking it apart and checking it all out finding more cool stuff!
Great review Gerry. Glad you like the look of the gen 7 I wasn't a big fan of the generic look but I was going to get one until I found the TRX4 Bronco. Having had the 1:1 I had to get on of those instead. I am digging the gen 8 v2 front mount motor and servo set up. Definitely a quality rig. I like the green.
I do have an odd question about the Gen 8's rear portal axles. I will qualify the question a statement first. I an building a rescue truck trail/scale rig. I am planning using the Tamiya Ford F350 cab with a scratch-built rescue body. I am also planning on using some 1/14 scale metal wheels and 1.7 tire duals. The looks like the Gen 8 could handle the weight really well but I don't know if the portals will fit inside the standard Tamiya rear wheel. I know they wont fit the TRX4 portal. I know I could use the SCX10 II Raw builders kit but I don't want to covert it to front mount motor. I also don't want to spend high dollars on an aftermarket transmission to get rid of the spur/pinion cover to superdetail the inside of the cab. Soooo, my question is will the dual rear Tamiya wheels fit the rear axle of the Gen 8 v2? If not how much of an offset am I looking at? The TRX4 was going to look cartoonie and weak.
Interesting, I did not know the history of the previous gen. I have the gen2 and couldn’t be happier, I haven’t had one failure yet and have driven the piss out of it. Great vid!
Had to watch this again my friend, I can't decide between the gen 7 and 8 could you do a second review of demos with crawling and uphill capabilites between the two, a straight axel vs portal with the same tires on both to make it fair.
Looks great and good to see a positive review of a company trying to improve its kits. Lots of extras too with a great price. I think some people are just too used to getting lots of stuff for little money then complain that its cheap. IMHO Green is beautiful )
Thanks my friend! It's good to have people that see my point. I love all rc and everything has some potential it all depends on the purpose you buy it for!!😁😁
Nice review Jerry Have both the gen7 pro and Gen8 v1. The gen7 pro has been fantastic for the price. Only issue was cracked the front axle. Melted the transmission gear with a 4000kv brushless. Currently has a home's trailmaster 27t with the stock esc. Scx10 axles with stock driveshafts. The gen8 has been a bit different. Axles have been fine other than the link mount threads are stripped. The transmission and transfer case aren't nearly as strong as the the gen7 pro. The steering is worst part of the gen8, way too much bump steer. The servo wasn't the issue for me, it's the geometry The stock tires on the v1 are terrible. My experience with redcat support has been subpar. Have a redcat shredder, it is in pieces and have spent more on parts than it cost. The stock and upgraded metal parts are junk The machining tolerances are almost non-existent. The threads are sloppy and screws just fall out, lock tight doesn't help. Given all that I really like the gen7 and gen8. They do have some good designs and quality parts. It is nice to see they are addressing the issues. Currently my gen8 has ar60 axles, all hardened gears, the shredder 1300kv motor, and munitions monster truck tires. Monster scout now
Thanks tim!! Iam planning on trying to abuse the gen8 v2 as much as the gen 7! But I will admit this truck is build well in my opinion, mainly its the little things they include that the big company's don't! Iam not big on the large power systems in crawlers I save that for my bashing rigs so it should last awhile!
Awesome review I just bought one for my brother ( who is a total newbie to the hobby btw ) . Was going to get him the gen7 sport cause I wanted to get him the most basic truck I could find . Low and behold don’t I get an email from Redcat they’re having a sale all this month . Long story short I ended up getting the gen8 for just about the price of the 7 and it’s got almost as many cool features as my $800.00 TF2 . Only thing extra I’m gonna get is a cheapy eBay interior and an adapter for the battery cause I don’t use Deans plugs . Other than that I’m looking forward to seeing how it keeps up with my “ mega buck “ truck .
My local Store (Amain Hobbies) the employees talk negatively about the Red Cat. When I was looking into crawling they said its crap. I got it anyway (Gen8 V2) Now I have 12 Trucks and the Gen8 is as good and sometimes better than the rest.
I am thinking of getting this as my first real crawler for the value to price ratio. However, me and my boys are already deep into traxxas with two slashes and one stampede. Lipos and traxxas charger. Can I safely run this with a traxxas 2s or 3s lipo by switching esu plug to a traxxas plug. Don't really want to invest in new charging system and lipos. But love this truck and all the features for the price.
Hello Peter! Great first truck for sure. All my trucks run traxxas plugs, I just made a few jumper plugs when I havnt changed the esc plug. I run a 2s in the redcat now but it will handle 3s😁
There are alot of haters out there. People think more money they better it is. I am pleased with my 2 gen 1 gen7pro and 1 Everest 10 and 1 gen8v2. I have had less problems with them then i did my umg10 6x6. Had that for 5 months and still having problems from out of the box and they do not offer a fix from horizon. Redcat customer service is top notch.
I completely agree!! Its funny to see smaller companies really stepping up with good products for lower prices, while the big companies just keep pumping out flawed and expensive rigs!! And the haters seem to thing that is ok??
I love my redcats. After fixing the bump steer my Gen 8 is awesome. My girlfriend broke the axle shaft on her gen 7 pro but with the Gen 8 axles mount right up.
Thanks for the review, you just made up my mind about buying one, it'll be my very first Crawler and I'm liking the looks and all the info you gave. People aren't generally happy unless they are bitching about something and as a Marine Corps vet I appreciate your attitude about others bitching.
I heard that it's a pretty decent rig, everybody better get one now before Redcat raises the prices on all the vehicles (which is supposed to happen soon).
$329 now. I have a V1 but now that my kids are old enough (3 and 5) they are hoggin all the crawlin haha. time to get another rig, the V2 looks great. I had very few issues with the V1 so its gotta be a yes for me.
I paint mine 3 different colors then another 2 colors , then I can a mix then. with lights. Was not happy with green. And I modified tires removing a center line of foam to make it softer and seal holes and leave some air inside. At the end, looks like a real tires with low pressure. ...I think
Hello lee!! I mentioned them in the video, there were a few. New plastics for the axles, new portal gears, stronger steering servo that was about it!! But still impressive for a company to do😁😁
I bought my jen7 several years ago and have enjoyed it with no issues though I have upgraded it with the version 2 portals and a better motor with some nice machined aluminum beadlock wheels 2.2 mud slingers but other than that it's a great machine very capable
Hey John, for the price this has been one nice rig! I bought it with the same idea you did, mod it on the cheap. But being the slave to the women in my life my grand baby wanted it!! But the gen 8!!😛😛😛😛 what a nice rig for the money!!
I love my Gen8 or what some would call, "The Section 8" lol. I've been very happy with the rig. The money I saved from not buying a $600 crawler went into brass and aluminum parts ^^
If no one has already told you the crazy doo-dads between the shock towers are actually a 30mm fan mount for a motor cooling fan. Just picked up a gen8 axe edition.
Thanks Daren I have heard that 😁 but it also seems to fit a rc4wd sound speaker nicely!! So far though the have the gearing spot on the motor runs nice and cool! Does the gen8 axe come with the fan included??
Great review! Very great points made, I think everyone should start with a shitty nimh only no name crap truck so that they could actually appreciate all the incredible engineering in today’s RC’s.. They are coming out with such great vehicles lately, people need to look at all the things that are great about them and shut the hell up about dumb stuff like dark windows, plastic d-rings, actually hearing the drive train. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@gerrysoldguyreview No kidding man! Oh those holes between the shock towers are fan mounts 👍🏻 that’s a great feature! Your review’s on this V2’s got me to buy my own!
I have a red cat on road car and it's awesome. I'm looking to buy my first crawler and I'm torn between the red cat gen 8 and trx4. I haven't made my mind up yet but I'm leaning towards the red cat. It's cheaper and looks to be just as capable as the traxxas
Hello Dennis! I have both so I can safely say I woul go with the redcat if it's your first crawler, it's cheaper, very adjustable, and has good aftermarket support, all you can hope for!!
Excellent Johnny! Only thing I've noticed is the top heavyness, but I love the body so I might just add some weight down low!! Redcat makes some nice metal parts😁
I’ve had my gen8 for a couple weeks now, I was surprised with the quality. I wasn’t expecting it to be so nice for the price of $300.. I believe I’ll just buy another rig when it comes time for replacing motor parts etc lol
@@gerrysoldguyreview just arrived home from my local crawl spot.. it was a blast to say the least. Already pushed back the bumpers about to make a stubby bumper.. and order tires.. the stock ones are quite nice though
I think it mainly comes down to people, some people can't stand waiting so if their problem doesn't get fixed right now they claim service sucks! I myself have dealt with traxxas, axial, and redcat with fairly positive results! My last call to traxxas was about gearing for tire size and we chatted for 20 minutes!! Sorry to hear that Darrell! I've had the grease problem many times over the years (I check all my rtr's) I've also had to deal with traxxas over broken parts (never got replacement) and axial (very slow) it does seem like sometimes once we buy something a company doesn't care to take can of us, all I can say is keep after them till they make it right!!

@@gerrysoldguyreview Np the redcat gen8 v2 is my first crawler btw I’m glad I went with it...it was cheap too
@@Rider-lh2gz for your first you can't go wrong! With the adjustments you can make plus the hop ups you can buy this should keep you busy for a while!!
Hey Gerry, how ya doing buddy. They did a great job on those I love mine and you got the same color as mine. Lime green.
Totally agree with ya ron!! Great minds must think alike!!😁😁😁
Can't get more retro then lime green!
@@gerrysoldguyreview yes didn't want the purple, those type are more along the lines I can afford on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong I wish I could afford a 500 dollar car everytime I got one but it's not always possible in less I wait for two or three months. But I enjoy the les costly ones just as much
And it's really fun to detail ron!!😁😁😁
I really like my Gen8 V2. I agree it has some improvements in design over my more expensive Axial. Very complete truck.
It took redcat a bit but their first in house design sure ended up being one of my favorite rigs!!
Great truck gerry! Great review. I took my driving test in a scout 2!
You old fart!!😁😁😁 thanks jason
I loved this best review i have seen not scared to say it as it is
Thanks Stuart! 😁😁
Yes steve I thing this is gonna be a good truck, but the scout body was what sold it for me. Even though it's a bit big!!
I will check into it steve and get back to you!!😁😁😁
@@gerrysoldguyreview Thanks Gerry!
Some people are not happy unless they are bitching about something! Nice rig and I am thinking about buying one. Nice review.
So true Mark! And thank you.
You will enjoy it greatly!😁
Interesting, I did not know the history of the previous gen. I have the gen2 and couldn’t be happier, I haven’t had one failure yet and have driven the piss out of it. Great vid!
Thanks david!
Reasonable and honest review! Thanks!
Thank YOU for watching!
Had to watch this again my friend, I can't decide between the gen 7 and 8 could you do a second review of demos with crawling and uphill capabilites between the two, a straight axel vs portal with the same tires on both to make it fair.
For you my friend!! 😆😆
Looks great and good to see a positive review of a company trying to improve its kits. Lots of extras too with a great price. I think some people are just too used to getting lots of stuff for little money then complain that its cheap. IMHO Green is beautiful )
Thanks my friend! It's good to have people that see my point. I love all rc and everything has some potential it all depends on the purpose you buy it for!!😁😁
Nice review Jerry
Have both the gen7 pro and Gen8 v1.
The stock and upgraded metal parts are junk
The machining tolerances are almost non-existent.
@@gerrysoldguyreview dang it!! Just realized I had spelled your name wrong. Sorry about that Gerry
No problem tim!! I dont sweat the small things, unless it's rc🤣🤣🤣🤣
You rode it hard, nice. Mine has run some pretty easy trails, but my kids took turns driving...VERY tough little truck.
Wow surprised amain sells redcat!! But I have found it an excellent truck, and your right it has many more extras then more expensive trucks!😁😁😁
I just became brand loyal with Gen 7, Gen 8, and wendigo. Think I’ll purchase one more to make a shelf queen and look into their other offerings.
All fine choices Jarrod! Look at the marksman and let me know what you think😁
Unbelievable for the price!
@@gerrysoldguyreview Have you thought about the newer crawlers from them?
I have the marksman, have been thinking about the gen9 not sure yet if it has enought to be that much different from the 8.
@gerrysoldguyreview I understand that. I'd like the Ascent, but I've got too much going on to justify the purchase.
@theworldsokayestmichigande851 the ascent! Not sure about that one, I think it looks more performance then it is
Thanks for the review, you just made up my mind about buying one, it'll be my very first Crawler and I'm liking the looks and all the info you gave. People aren't generally happy unless they are bitching about something and as a Marine Corps vet I appreciate your attitude about others bitching.
Thank you for viewing! I have really enjoyed mine and do feel it is an excellent crawler!
I am looking forward to the next scale rig they release.
So am I kergan, but it will probably be abit. They have spent a lot of money r&ding this one and seem to have gotten it just right!
Not bad looking looks like they did a lot of work with that one maybe have to get one
I agree fred! The price is right😁😁
My first rock crawlers was a redcat
I feel they have always made fun vehicles fred!😁😁
I heard that it's a pretty decent rig, everybody better get one now before Redcat raises the prices on all the vehicles (which is supposed to happen soon).
It sounds like it may be all rc company's shannon🤔🤔
$329 now. I have a V1 but now that my kids are old enough (3 and 5) they are hoggin all the crawlin haha. time to get another rig, the V2 looks great. I had very few issues with the V1 so its gotta be a yes for me.
Good to hear your keeping it in the family!!😁 it has been a great rig for me!
Awesome rig. Would love to have a gen7
Hello woods!! They still sell them😁😁
I paint mine 3 different colors then another 2 colors , then I can a mix then. with lights. Was not happy with green. And I modified tires removing a center line of foam to make it softer and seal holes and leave some air inside. At the end, looks like a real tires with low pressure. ...I think
Nice, lots of my builds work on what I think looks real!🤣🤣
This is exactly what i was looking for! Is there any difference between this V2 and the Axe Edition apart from electronics, body and interior?
Hello lee!! I mentioned them in the video, there were a few. New plastics for the axles, new portal gears, stronger steering servo that was about it!! But still impressive for a company to do😁😁
That rc car is so big. It might not even fit in my house lol
It's not bad, the camera makes it look bigger then it is!! Still big for a scout though 😁😁😁
I’ll be receiving mine on Monday can’t wait to try it out

Mine just got here today and I’m HIGHLY impressed especially since I’m a RC4WD addict this is almost as nice as my tf2 at 1/2 the price
I love my Gen8 or what some would call, "The Section 8" lol. I've been very happy with the rig. The money I saved from not buying a $600 crawler went into brass and aluminum parts ^^
Good to hear! Mine has been very reliable and has risen to one of my favorites! Thanks for joining in😁

@@gerrysoldguyreview no sir but after an hr of running was curious on temp and barely any heat at all. Mabey 120deg (can keep my hand on can)
Redcat also has there engineers design parts and accessories for free on thingyverse to print

Awesome, loved your rant.
@@gerrysoldguyreview thank you for your comment,I appreciate it. I think that will be my new toy with my stimulus

I’ve had my gen8 for a couple weeks now, I was surprised with the quality. I wasn’t expecting it to be so nice for the price of $300.. I believe I’ll just buy another rig when it comes time for replacing motor parts etc lol

I have the Axe and it's the best for the buck in my opinion, Trx4 are 5-600 and not even brushless lol this thing is tricked out for 499
And at 299 (now 320) even adding a brushless system still keeps it well below 600!!😁😁
Arrma does it with every model
I have heard good things about arrma brad!
Yeah they seem to really care about there customers. Your right though, redact has great customer service.
I dont have any aarrma's but have heard nothing but good things and I think that it what it's all about!

@@gerrysoldguyreview hey that’s what I’m here for!
this review compares the Gen 7 to the V2 gen 8. Not quite the same truck. the V is indeed a good buy and quality truck.
Not so much a comparison as a example of how much a company can really update a vehicle!! Redcat knocked it out of the park with the gen8.
