And Ronny with the drink coming on stage. Never see such legends again being so real just jamming. Muddy was so cool the whole time
Put this in perspective for those who may not fully appreciate the impact of Muddy Waters. Arguably the greatest Rock band of all time, braved the hassles of entering a small club which undoubtedly held many rabid fans, to listen and then play with one of their all time greatest influences. This is an amazing video.
Keith stepped up and threw down a sweet flawless solo and put such a great lick to it. Whereas Mick seemed lost until Keef came on and bailed him out! Great memories of that entire Stonsian period!
I think Mick was a little star struck. Muddy Waters was one of their idols. Keith played a very good solo; he's renowned for his riffs so to hear him play that solo was a treat.
Whoever speak ill of the Rolling Sones cant see them for what they are and were, they seem to genuinely love blues, and this is some blues for legends.
Through the early Stones albums, the Stones brought me to Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, et al. Muddy Waters supposedly sat in on their "2120 South Michigan Ave" tune.
Heavenly Father, as I close this prayer, I thank you for the privilege of interceding on behalf of this beloved friend and their family. May your grace continue to abound in their lives, and may they always walk in the fullness of your blessings, now and forevermore. Amen.
Stones show a lot of balls with an entrance like that. No matter how big they are they will NEVER out show Muddy Waters. But I guess that's why they are the Rolling Stones. Muddy doesn't seem to care!!! Shows a lot of class!!! Great show
+Don Bastian hey Don yep am sure the seats were reserved for the stones. An incredible clip. I just thought the stones could have waited till Muddy was in between songs as a show of respect but either way wish I would have been there. Thanks!!!
I don't know what I like more: watching the Rolling Stones pay their respects to one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century or that Muddy Waters was kind enough to let them on his stage.
Muddy looks so happy and almost overjoyed to welcome them up, what a wonderful soul he was. He sincerely expressed his fondness for Mick and the boys, and they were over the moon to be onstage with Muddy. I love how Keith traversed tabletops in order to play with a hero.
A lot of those old blues guys got a big boost from the Rolling Stones and others and finally made good money touring in their final years. At least Stones didnt rip off their songs and basterdize them like Zep did with Willie Dixon.
@@violinmke I couldn't agree more. The Stones were great, and the fact that they understood where they came from and gave their influences the respect and attention they deserved makes them all the better.
@@violinmke You probably know this but for the benefit of those who don't, on later tours the likes of Muddy Waters and BB King were opening acts for the Stones. The Stones always made a point of crediting the original artist when they covered a blues song. Willie Dixon wasn't the only person to be ripped off by Zep. The list is rather long. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" was credited as "trad arr. LZ" when in fact Anne Bredon who wrote the song was alive and well!
I love how Mick needed a bit of convincing to get on stage, but Keith instantly understood the once-in-a-century chance at this moment and was climbing right over the table to get to Muddy.
This jam session is from 1981 recorded in Chicago. Muddy Waters was 68 by this time, and had been playing the guitar since around 1928. He was born in 1913. Mick Jagger was only 38 at this time. Sadly, Muddy Waters died just two years after this collaboration. 🙏
Fantastic video! This brings back wonderful memories for me. I saw Muddy in a small club back in 1973. I sat right in front of the stage just like this video, only feet away from the great man. It was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life and I will never forget it. To see and hear Muddy Waters up close, to experience his extraordinary charisma and amazing talent, to feel the power of the blues being played by one of its greatest legends----- I feel a reverence no different than the Stones. All credit to the Stones for acknowledging and paying genuine respect and homage to Muddy. They broke the mold when Muddy was born, and there will never be another like him again.
Muddy had a huge influence. So many guys that saw Muddy were inspired to play Blues!!! The Mnt Rushmore of Delta Blues would have Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Elmore James.//////to I just re read my post and am somewhat dumbfounded that I forgot Charlie Patton. Patton was really the guy that got it going, I believe.
Yeah, I noticed he was out of his element. I think he told Muddy Waters when he whispered to him to bring Keith up. Once Keith was up there, Mick Jagger seemed much more confident and relaxed. This is one of my favorite videos.
@@juliedefee567 That's observant, and I agree...Mick was probably over the moon to be on stage with Muddy, and his knees were shakin'...who could blame...MICK?!! GREAT VID!!
I don't think Jagger was nervous at all, respectful certainly; they'd met Muddy Waters many years previously...and probably often. Jagger probably didn't wanna' 'crash' the gig, that's all.
John Primer (one of Muddy's two guitar players, along with Rick Kreher) told me that he was going to give his guitar to Keith to play, but Muddy said. "No, no, no" -- he wanted John to stay up there and "keep things together." Pretty high compliment!
South Siders in Chicago ain't star-struck -- at least not for a bunch of skinny white-boy rock & rollers. If B.B. King had come into the club, or maybe James Brown or Aretha or even Johnnie Taylor or Tyrone Davis, we'd probably have seen a different reaction.
its like someone grabbed a HD video camera, jumped into a time machine and went to 1981 Chicago !! the camera work in some scenes is incredible, going from close ups of Mick and Keith, to a wide crowd shot !! What a Masterpiece !! and full points to guy playing harmonica !!

You are young, and you matter for us. Never let you down Man! Greetings from polish 13 y/o!
By your reckoning I,m a ĺate teens, 65. Saw the Stones 3 times but never Muddy. This music will never die. ((I hope)
That's how music used to unite generations and nations, difficult to find such fenomenal collaboation today...
Put this in perspective for those who may not fully appreciate the impact of Muddy Waters. Arguably the greatest Rock band of all time, braved the hassles of entering a small club which undoubtedly held many rabid fans, to listen and then play with one of their all time greatest influences. This is an amazing video.
Take meds.

@@j1l9f9k0 Does the posters comment imply otherwise?
Love this show. Papa Muddy inviting his kids to have fun!
Happy Birthday Mick (26/07/1943)
Mick was quoted in the 60’s, “we’re a blues band not rock n roll”.
Two legendary bands, throwing it down together,
What a treat!
Muddy Waters and The Stones! Yes!❤
Heavenly Father, as I close this prayer, I thank you for the privilege of interceding on behalf of this beloved friend and their family. May your grace continue to abound in their lives, and may they always walk in the fullness of your blessings, now and forevermore. Amen.
what the hell are you rambling on about?

Stones show a lot of balls with an entrance like that. No matter how big they are they will NEVER out show Muddy Waters. But I guess that's why they are the Rolling Stones. Muddy doesn't seem to care!!! Shows a lot of class!!! Great show
+muddy5001Pretty obvious with the empty seats, that Muddy knew they were coming and had the seats reserved. :-)
+Don Bastian You are correct! That's exactly what happened, the entrance was a surprise for everyone else :) I LOVE IT
+Don Bastian hey Don yep am sure the seats were reserved for the stones. An incredible clip. I just thought the stones could have waited till Muddy was in between songs as a show of respect but either way wish I would have been there. Thanks!!!
+Kevin Watson in those days they where like Justin Bieber now is; spoiled and suicidal. Over hyped. But they survived.
+Maggot Brain
you're comparing Justin Bieber with who ??? you might as well compare one direction to Queen
A lot of those old blues guys
got a big boost from the Rolling Stones and others and finally made good money touring in their final years.
Could not agree more!
I love how Mick needed a bit of convincing to get on stage, but Keith instantly understood the once-in-a-century chance at this moment and was climbing right over the table to get to Muddy.
Yes I noticed that too but Mick delivered as usual~!!
When keith gets called up it’s hilarious “what about keith?!” And then he just appears on stage smoke in mouth hand out demanding his telecaster 😂
good point!
It's clearly staged, with a second camera and guitars all ready to go, but it's still a darn good gig.
They had booked a show a week prior. This was staged.
This jam session is from 1981 recorded in Chicago. Muddy Waters was 68 by this time, and had been playing the guitar since around 1928. He was born in 1913. Mick Jagger was only 38 at this time. Sadly, Muddy Waters died just two years after this collaboration. 🙏
Thanks for that small History Lesson of one of the greats that started it all=Muddy Watters~!!
Very interesing
❤Muddy waters reminds me of 1st...Johnson nothing beats thier blues true blue blues❤
The rolling Stones have the real muddy water blues! I just bet you Paul Rodgers Love's this video! There ain't nothing like the muddy water blues!❤❤❤
Man to have been able to get into this spot that night and hear it in person. I can't even begin to imagine it.
Props to you, sweetheart. Dis you ever hear sonny terry and brownie McGee?
I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT ✅️
That's awesome
Great memories for you & great comments about the maestro, and this jam session with The Stones! You're a lucky man Joe!
Even the ever confident Jagger was not comfortable being up there with a true blues legend.
Stupid statement...of course Mick WAS comfortable "being up there"...He had the HIGHEST respect for his IDOL!!
Yeah i think Mick knew what was up, after all he'd tried to follow James Brown once - poor fella :D
John Primer (one of Muddy's two guitar players, along with Rick Kreher) told me that he was going to give his guitar to Keith to play, but Muddy said. "No, no, no" -- he wanted John to stay up there and "keep things together." Pretty high compliment!
Look at the people in the pub, chillin, dont care dont stare....and thats the way normal people treated famous people.
Empatia con el demonios
E.patia con el demonios
Holy moly, for the price if a beer. The audience got to see muddy waters, Mick jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie wood up close and personal. Fucking amazeing. Spontaneous combustion. Once in a lifetime event. God bless rock and roll
And the combusted Benny Hedge's hanging out two of their mouths.
When people get a chance to meet their idols this is what supposed to happen. The way Muddy inspired these men, and many more, in music is an example to be followed
Yes. I agree.
What’s so great is without uttering a word their respect and place in the rock and rock pecking order is confirmed and they joyously acknowledge it
Hah! Mick's such a little kid, lost in admiration as we all would be, Muddy tryin not to crack up, the music keeps on movin- I love it.
One of the all time "Masters" with some of his best "Honors Students" - Masters in their own right. This is priceless. Thank you for posting this without regard for direct revenue.
I love this comment. If you read this five years later... I love music too and it's wonderful we can share the enjoyment of this song as strangers

Yes!
Pleaseeee don’t go!!
Einfach großartig 👍
Its so funny to see the way the band's guitarist packs his thing 7:07 when Keith is entering the scene. What a night.
Muddy was Micks idol from day one, you can see the respect in his eyes
Muddy and Jimmy Reed
Yeah....
and the fear also...
So truuue💫⭐
Absolutely!! Keith I think though, is his biggest fan ever. He loves that man.
What a great guitar man Keith Richards. One of greatest of all the time.
you can kinda see how mick becomes more animated and comfortable as soon as keith starts playing. pretty cool
What a damn surprise that was for the audience!!! Come to see one legendary band and leave watching 2!!
Muddy was amazing. He had both Mick and Keith responding to his blues.
Can you imagine being invited up by " MUDDY WATERS" The Legend? Oh my Word! That would be Fantastic!
Blues is the only music that you can take a 4 minute song and turn it into a 10 minute song and at the end of 10 minutes you wish it could have turned into a 15 minute song and never get tired of it,. You can really tell that Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ron Woods really didnt expect to be brought up...but damn when your called out by a legend being Muddy Waters.... you show up., Love the session.
At 44 years old this is before even my time, and yet it is an emotional and special thing to be able to watch this moment in time of one legendary band getting to play with another legendary band that they idolized (and where and how it all happened!). Wow.
494 people can't fell the blues, what a shame. Thank you for the video, it is a master piece of the blues history.
Yeah what about Keith !!

Heikki Ojala or
Keith Richards going up on stage, the epitome of cool. Love the impromptu of this gig.
That dude on the harmonica is Amazing
And john primer on gutiar
I guess he's George "Harmonica" Smith.
haha... he is good love their music super
lol agree
John Conway, Ill settle this once and for all. Ill ask John Primer.
Keith did fine with his guitar when he was high. No fuckin joke.
Jagger was high too xD
And still is. 😊
Точно!😊
Look at Muddy Waters. The man is great, a legend. The music... I love all of this.💖
this feels like the entire history of rock'n'roll compressed in 10 mins
@Mick Jagger bloody hell Mick, as if you were here just 20 hours ago. Grew up listening to your stuff. My Dad's a big fan. Mum too. Played 'Jumping Jack Flash' at my first live show when I was 14! Got a couple of tunes on here if you search "Jay Raidu" - one called 'Fear' one called 'Crossroads". Have a listen if you like. Keep rocking x
Who would have liked to be there?. me that's who, Muddy Waters, Rolling Stones, in a smoky bar, having a little drink..heaven...x
My mom used to swim with Muddy Waters daughter at there house in Westmont IL when she was little. She told me she remembered the Rolling Stones being there once, but she was to young to really know who they were.
Love singing along with Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones to Baby Please Don't Go ! Next my harmonica ! Fun ! Bounce it !
Later that night Buddy Guy and Junior Wells also were on stage. If memory served, that was Buddy's place.
in the right mood or with the right drugs or the right company
Meeeee!
The sound in that place must’ve been phenomenal. Very lucky crowd. ❤
Historic!! Listening to MUDDY for the first time! Brilliant!
I love those swampy blues, it's a sound like no other.
@Mick Jagger Fuck Off “Mick Jagger”
I've watched this video many times over the years so it's about time I made a comment....."Bloody marvellous!" in 2024.
Yeah Man yeah, Love the Harp music
Bloody genius
Never get tired of this even after many years of watching, best music ever 💜 🎶 🎵
Muddy Waters was amazing. No wonder why they loved him so much. I wish I could have seen him in concert. Embodiment of the blues.
Absolutely amazing , the legend and his students performing together . Just 2 years before the legend passed onto myth.
I've watched this 7 times and never get tired, love muddy, his band, and the brilliant stones, Keith classic too over the tables lol.

7? You still have a few More kid..
Still counting friend, getting there, 😉
Muddy knew what he was doing. Love the Stones but he definitely proved a point here.
What point?
What point?
There is no point, not everything is a competition.
Such a low IQ comment
There is just nothing comparable today, you're at a club listening to a blues legend, chillin enjoying the music and in walks the rolling freakin stones. No security, no fan fare, just the stones and their girls..............................nothing comparable like that could happen today. if I were at that club on that night OMG! I like how that one brother at the table was like in awe just snapping pics. Oh to be at that table, geeze 😊
Truth Indeed
I love how they just happened to be there and muddy noticed and let them come up and Jam
Damn Something about Muddy's sound that just hits you down to your soul! 🙏🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
