On 22 November 1981, in the middle of their mammoth American tour, the Rolling Stones arrived in Chicago prior to playing 3 nights at the Rosemont Horizon. store.eagle-rock.com/muddywaters
Long influenced by the Chicago blues, the band paid a visit to Buddy Guy's club the Checkerboard Lounge to see the legendary bluesman perform. It didn't take long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were joining in on stage and later Buddy Guy and Lefty Dizz also played their part. It was a unique occasion that was fortunately captured on camera.
Now, restored from the original footage and with sound mixed and mastered by Bob Clearmountain, this amazing blues night is being made available in an official release for the first time.

The man playing the harmonica is my grandpa. Mojo Buford
Wonderful!
Mary Markoe 👍
Grandpa was on point that night!
I met James Cotton once in Sacramento. Your Uncle plays a mean harp.
Mary Markoe nice pkayer! I think he nade some songs with Led Zeppelin
Harmonica is 100000% the most underrated part of this video. Wish i was there, what a night
Crystal Waters man, what I wouldn’t give to be there that night! Just jammin!
"Wish i was there" me too...
the harmonica is probably what makes muddy waters sound different
George buford played hard this night because knew who was coming.
Me too
The Rolling Stones had a large audience of people at their tours, while muddy waters had a small audience of those very rockstars who looked up to him, incredible
He was their idol...
The Stones were named after a Muddy Waters song.
It’s doesn’t matter about the size of the audience. Muddy Waters is a legend. You just sound racist.
@@joycereddicks8326 He also sounds stupid. Stones paid a visit to his small club out of respect. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wouldn't perform with anyone in front of small audience.. Muddy was more than a legend.
@@joycereddicks8326 why does he sound racist?
We should all thank Muddy Waters for his musical contributions. The stones would not be here today without him.
That's right.

Everybody’s got this backwards. The Rolling Stones wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for men like Muddy Waters. “They” were lucky to be able to sit in with a living legend.
Muddy put the unk into the funk
JOE BLOW YASSSSSSSSSS
Truth
@The Tribal Funkster That's true but i think the British admired, respected, and appreciated their blues idols more than people here in America(outside the black community).
Quarantine Thursday night drunk as hell!!!!😋
Thats what I was thinking. Love the Stones but Muddy Waters, BB, Otis, Ella, Aretha were the pioneers.
Nobody has ever made cigarettes look cooler than Keith Richards
That's true, practice?
When he steps over the table, what a legend.
The jaws man....not open
i will consider Mr. Jimi Page too mate....But after Keith off course....Another level
Keith Richards made everything cool, this man is like a definition of coolness
Miss the old day when people just having fun, and play real music.
Those good days. Amen!

Just know, Bill Clinton fucked up the music business. He passed a law where before it used to be maybe 50 different companies that controlled pretty much everything entertainment and other things, and now it's about 5 or 6 componies, like Disney, Viacom, all those big ones. They now control everything we hear, see and read in America. So before we had much more variety, more risk, more thought into what we all thought the world was. Now society has been mushed into one view, with one idea. And this idea is that music must be consumable just like junk food. That's why everything is tge same. It's much harder to find the music that once challenged and was proud of being a part of something, and it's been damn near impossible for musicians to live that way too. So fuck bill clinton, fuck Napster, and fuck the junk food they force us too make.
The most underrated guy in this clip is that Amazing harmonica player!!!!!
Exactly!
That was 🔥🔥🔥
That would be Mr Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. He was a boss on the harmonica. He'd been blowing the harp for Muddy Waters since the early 60s at that point. He really shines on Muddy's 'Get Hard' album.
@@detroitrockcity475 Appreciate the info, he is like the Hendrix of the Harmonica! I'll check that album out.
Matthew Storms ain’t that the truth!
Just the point.
Imagine seeing Muddy and his band in a small intimate club like this! That's the way music should be heard.
You Kno it's the inner/ inner circle
I had the privilege of visiting Buddy Guy's blues club in Chicago a couple of years ago. That was a moment.
Ann TwoShoes Definitely special! His spirit is in that room and quite a few others, I suspect. I hope he was there in person. I was lucky enough to meet Buddy Guy in Melbourne. He is such a lovely person and a dynamite performer. One of the greatest blues guitarists still in my opinion.
Back in the early 80s living in Everett Washington I was walking by the Anchor Tavern and heard music this is a working mans bar mostly longshoremen looked inside and there sat BB King . For the next hour and a half I was sitting and listening to the best concert I've ever been to. Something I will never forget.
kuzin eddy Wow! That's a wonderful experience. I have never seen BB King live.
The way Keith Richard's came up onto the stage, walking across the table over drinks with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and the presence he carried is the same energy and vibe I try to have everyday 😅
🥰❤️
Far to be the most interesting here.
Hahaha lmao in painting my fence today with a head band wrapped around my head ears sticking out chain smoking and drinking 8.2% scrumpy……..think I’ve nailed that energy today, even been laughing proper throaty 😭😭😭

Don't forget Chuck Berry
@@Methilde The Stones didn't name themselves after a Chuck Berry song.
@@furioussherman7265 And Keith's riffs are directly inspired by Chuck Berry. When he saw Mick at Dartford station Mick had a Muddy Water and a Chuck Berry album with him.

Ariel, I agree. THe harmonica guy is very good
When Mick Jaget got of the plane for.the first time in America the interviewer asked him, what would you like to do first? Meet Muddy Waters he answered. The interviewer asked , who is that? Jagger said . You don't know your own famous people?
The story was that when the Beatles first toured in the US they were asked what they wanted to see. Muddy Waters they replied. Where is that asked the interviewer.
When the Stones pulled up outside Chess for the first to record they were unloading their equipment A voice asked if they wanted a hand. It was Muddy Waters. Jagger and Brian Jones were awestruck and couldn’t believe one of their heroes was there.

Muddy Waters tells you to come on stage, you come on stage! Even if you’re Mick Jagger and Keith Richards!
Considering they both idolised Muddy Waters (and named their band after one of his songs) their restraint at not jumping on the stage is remarkable.

As the story goes, back in the 60s when the Stones were just starting out, their first stop after landing in Chicago was Chess Records. Muddy Waters recording studio. They came in hopes of meeting Muddy in person. After walking up the stairs they saw a man on a ladder painting the ceiling in the hallway. Keith said “Excuse me sir, would you tell us if Muddy Waters is here?”
The man put down his paint brush, got down off the ladder, wiped off his hands and extended his hand to Keith.
“I’m Muddy Waters” he said.
Keith’s jaw hit the floor.

Wow, I would love to go to that club
M M apparently when the Beatles went to the USA a reporter asked them what they wanted to do and they said we want to see Muddy Waters and the reporter said where’s that.
Probably one of the most legendary moments ever recorded in music history. The inspiration for the name of the Rolling Stones came from the song Rollin Stone by Muddy. Crazy to be able to see this and the audio is amazing quality too.
Now that is fucking jamming! With the legendary Muddy Waters without him the Stones would never exist.
I'm impressed by the quality of the recorded sound (even in stereo) and the image. The Stones' arrival was planned. Table right up front reserved for them; camera crew hired (there are at least 2 cameras going simultaneously); sound recording crew hired. Whoever thought of setting this up, good on them, so we can all enjoy it decades later.
I think he brought is own guitar, and so did Ron. Otherwise, Muddy's guitarist would've just handed his off to Keith. The Stones security had to have called the club ahead of time, to arrange for them to get some VIP treatment and seating. It's easy to imagine someone from the Stones camp telling Muddy they'd be there, and him saying have them bring their guitars, if they want to come up and jam. Both guitars were tuned and ready to go. How did they know they wouldn't have to check the tuning ahead of time? A prepared guitar tech?
It takes Mick a while to get up to Muddy, but when Keith and Ronny are called they scamper across the tables, and in a few moments they had their own guitars in hand. The dead giveaway, is the guitar straps are the perfect length for each. As for playing with Muddy's Band, they were set for standard tuning with their guitars, and most of the music would have been in standard tuning. Perhaps Muddy's guitar player might play slide guitar, and he probably would be in an Open G Tuning, or a tuning that is tuned to a chord. Dailyflash, you nailed all the arrangements getting everyone into their seats. The big question is where is the video of the other songs they played. You know they were doing 2 or 3 songs with a couple guys shooting film, went to the trouble of getting Keith and Ronny's guitars on pitch. I didn't see Charlie, but he doesn't like getting out, but Bobby Keys was there, and could have provided saxophone. There must be more film and a couple of other songs.
And.....your point is?
I love when Keith climbs over the table, then grabs & leans on the woman serving drinks, almost like she's furniture, then kisses her confirm it was really a hug; she smiles & puts her arm around him, to say, "I know, got the joke; you're family here." Beautiful moment. One of the sweetest interactions you'll ever see on the internet. Muddy Waters beaming with joy like a proud father at Jagger & Richards, exact same dynamic. (I was at the Checkerboard a few times & remember her: so *heimish*.)
I think I've read everything about Keith Richards...women love him. He seems kind and authentic. Jagger's reviews from women are terrible. I read one Stone's woman's book, (sorry, they blend together). She said her mother threw a joint in the pool when Keith handed it off. So he rolled 2 more. "This one is for me to smoke, and that one is for your mum to throw in the pool..."
i like this moment also .... coooolest moment ... ;)

Keith Richards playing like it's nothing, man!!! What a gift.
He can improvise anything in a blink of an eye.. That's talent he plays this instrument in his dreams.
It's not a hard song to jump into
In fact it is nothing. Hes playing the simplest pentatonic scale...like any brginner can do after kess than a year practice. The only thing that can make the difference is the " feel". But the " teddy boy attitude" he has to me, doesnt compensate the fact hes a poor player. I mean..you playing wit guys who invented and move the blues. If you cany add anything special, just leave it to them

"What about Keith?" Love the fact that the Stones use to hang out with the Kings of Blues and the locals in Chicago. Those were great days when the boys came to town....
They honored them and didn't just rip them off like Zep.
Remember that before the Stones and Eric C guys like Muddy were unheard of and never made money. They made sure that the record companies paid them royalties . That’s why you see a guy like Muddy reacting like this when the stones walked in!!
Look at any Stones album and you'll notice that the original artist is always credited. The Stones always acknowledged their debt to blues music and the original artists. I've no idea if they still do it but the Stones used to perform in small clubs like this under various pseudonyms like "Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys"; I think they played old blues songs.
Singing backup and playing with Muddy Waters!! A dream come true for the Rolling Stones. Glad someone was there to capture it for us to see. thanks

I just thought that 1. Keith was a bit of an a**hole for not acknowledging or barely even thanking him. He just ignores him. 2. He played better than Keith.
@@nielsje30 You've never played in a band otherwise you'd understand the culture. Musicians don't give props during a performance. Just not the way things are done. The exception I've seen is in some jazz ensembles where all the musicians will stand up and point to the drummer during a solo. Look at the Moranbong Band doing "Let the Snow Fall On New Years Day", The first violin and the cello give the big point to the drummer while she rips off a good one. As far as Keith being "not as good", that's another silly remark that shows your ignorance. Musicians judge other musicians on their body of work. On their lifetime contribution to the art. Keef has been doing it for over 50 years. I don't think anyone has been more influential than Keith Richards. Writing. Tuning. Improvisational stuff. Pushing the envelope. I love how Keith Richards can make any guitar sound like Keith Richards.
That's because tone is all in the hands. The way you hold your chords, the way you pluck the strings, etc. Sure you can do many things with effects and knobs, but at the end of the day you can have the exact same equipment dialed in the exact same way and you won't be able to sound the same as Keith.
@@joeyg2525 Keith is the kind of player that can make a $150 guitar not sound like a $150 guitar. I don't think he can disguise his playing style. The devil is going to have a good old time when Keith finally has to relinquish his soul. Because obviously he made a few more deals with old Beelzebub to prolong his life. Every body at Chess records inspired all the bands from England, when Muddy was in his hey day, we here in the states didn't hear his music, but in England they got air time and respect they couldn't get at home.
Thats a fact
Most people know this, but for those who don't know, the Stones went to Chess Records on their early American tours. First or second, you pick, I can't get to my record collection right now, but the Stones were being recorded with blues greats at Chess. That record album is raw blues. Later, when the blues artists from the US were touring in England, they made a second album featuring the Stones again with blues artists from London. I have both albums.
Otis Redding and James Brown Jackie Wilson
Percy Sledge Brooks Benton to name a few was tearing it up.
Well I found him and was lucky enough to see him 6 times in ct
So true. There were black musicians who became successful with white audience, but the blues was too “black”, being sensual, full of pain and often very sexual.
...and Muddy Waters said 'let there be rock' and there WAS rock. What a show. I am rewinding this one
What a priviledge for the Stones to be there watching MUDDY live !!! Most of the greatest performers in those days were Brits following the BBK, the Muuddies and all!!

the stones professed their love for muddy waaay back in the sixties, this is gold
Nothing quite like a Muddy Waters tune. Remember listening to Muddy in the basement when my father put it on. Rest in peace dad. Good times always in the rec-room, music to take you away from the worries of the world out there. Music to bring your soul out to dance and move. Wow what a young Mick J! Love that harmonica, thee best music!
Muddy ... 80 years old there and still doin' it! Legend.
Dave Paterson - Muddy Waters was born in 1913, so he was not 80!
And the legend left us two years later(4-30-1983) WE LOVED YOU MUDDY...
Oh ya, this is one good song, just the way it's done. Mick gets up and does his best 👍 then Kevin gets up and it gets it going even more. One good team doing this song, Fantastic
I think this is one of the most amazing videos I've seen from the zillions available on RUclips. Just couldn't stop smiling :-)
