No idea why this has escaped me for so long. Some of the best musicians ever to grace a stage. One of the finest 10 minutes I ever spent. If you don't feel the blues, it's too late for you 'cause you're already dead.
This takes me back to 1962 when I hitch hiked from Durham University to London. I visited the Marquis theatre in Soho London and heard John Lee Hooker for the first time and I was mesmerized. I could only just afford to pay for the concert ticket but I know I had to see him again. Also featured the Rolling Stones together with John Lee Hooker - I thought I had arrived in Heaven and debated why should I complete my degree in Engineering at Durham. But reality finally intruded and I realized I had to earn a living as an Engineer to enjoy this heaven. Now nearly 60 years later, I can enjoy this music in retirement in California. Thnx.
All of these icons on one stage is simply mind blowing and truly amazing 🎉🎉, they sound so freaking amazing 🎉🎉, they are what blues and rock and roll stands for🎉🎉
John lee Hooker is 72 years old here. Incredible, full-package talent from whom the other three kids made their living off the back of. Nice to see the respect for him.
@@vincentlatour1190 It's all relative. I never said he was. I'm within ten years of that age myself and am learning classical after 42 years of blues/rock. Cheers.
Just went to see Buddy Guy in Dayton earlier this week, and he was vehement about how the British saved many of those blues artists like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Son House, Leadbelly, etc., by giving them a platform and an audience in the UK that they could not get on the US white owned radio and TV stations. Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones brought Muddy Waters over to the US to play with them on tour, and essentially no one had ever heard of him. I used to go and see The Yardbirds (with Eric Clapton) at the Star pub in Thornton Heath, and they would have Sonny Boy Williamson, a black harmonica player, with them. We loved those American blues and R&B performers and the music they brought with them, and most UK bands adopted many of their songs.
Clapton is on fire and John Lee Hooker is one of the all time great blues warriors! can't get any higher! I saw the Stones in the Bay Area on their Steel Wheels Tour and they were fab in 1989!
I remember this , Steel Wheels Tour . This was in Boardwalk convention Hall 1989 . My son saw Stones . Clapton and Hooker live for first time . Great show.
That's the real deal right there. Not only a player but a fantastic showman. He knows his craft to the core..it's life..to the heart, soul and to the grave
all the current blues musicians should be so thankful for John Lee hooker.they owe everything to the American blues men and women of j.l.hookers era.loved the footage.
Led Zep bluntly stole dem ole' kozmic bloos, whereas R. Stones paid their dues to these "forgotten", sometimes broke and/or sick bloos giants by doing things like collaboration LPs, and touring with The Hook at age 72 or 77 (nobody knows his real age...). Kudos to them, although I've never been a fan...
I remember clear as day when I went to see the Rolling Stones @ Atlantic City Hall Convention Center and John Lee Hooker came on stage. I swear to God that tone and the guitar playing sent chills up and down my spine! Some of the younger people in the audience didn't know what was happening but my friends and I were Godsmacked! He was the LAST of the old guard like Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters. A LEGEND for SURE!
I remember it like yesterday. I called to get tickets but couldn't get two tickets next to each other, so I bought them separate. We walked in Atlantic City's Convention Center (my girlfriend and I) and handed the Ushers our tickets, they walked her towards the back and walk me to the very front row. I couldn't believe that I was touching the stage. I can still see John Lee Hooker's index finger spinning around in circles. I will never forget that, he was leaning over me when he was leaning towards the audience. We saw 6 shows on the Steel Wheels tour. The opener at Veterans Stadium Philadelphia, three shows at Atlantic City's Convention Center and two shows at Shea Stadium Queens New York. That was 1989, I was only 25 years old. Thanks John Lee RIP, Brother.
Great meeting this concert the Stone with Eric Clapton great Blues, and to close the excellent King of Boggie Mr John Lee Hooker ,it is priceless to see these Stars together 🎸🎸🎸🎹🥁
I really put John Lee Hooker right up there with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. They were all fantastic in their own ways. John Lee did his own thing in his own way. Some of the notes might have been wrong but he still knew how to put on a show. Give it to the Stones for reintroducing a lot of the blues from America back to America. Their early albums are filled with the blues, including "Little Red Rooster" which I think was an older song redone by them.
When you look up the word "Cool" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of John Lee Hooker & then under that it should also say "See Keith Richards"
Pero qué alumnos! Además Ronny y Keith. Qué más puede uno pedir? Una bellísima época. Una generación que todavía anda dando lata después de tantos años. Gracias x el video. Es mi generación (70 años....) seguimos rebeldes y rockeros.
if anyone clicked on this for "the rolling stones" or "eric claption" they were sorely mistaken as this is infact a John Lee Hooker concert with Clapton opening.
Wannabe Brits? Oh Eric Clapton you mean? Well, if you say so. Whatever. John Lee was wonderful. Last of a kind. Deep blues-and phased by nothing and no-one, Wish he was still around :-)
Those 'wannabe Brits' gave the blues the appreciation it deserves. Elvis did too, but the of rest US had yet to take notice ! Yes Hooker's a is a genuine blues man, but few did more to promote the blues than Eric Clapton.
Ludicrous comment. The Stones are laying down the rhythm foundation for all concerned. And that includes Clapton and Hooker, notwithstanding their individual brilliance. Thank you Keef, Bill, Charlie!!! And Mick, the greatest front man in history.

Irresistible, hypnotizing boogie by John Lee Hooker. That man was truly gifted. Deeply missed.
John Lee Hooker was at once one of the most influential yet inimitable artists in blues history.

John Lee Hooker
John Lee Hooker was an influential American post-war blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter.
Awesomem! Finally I get it! Nice....
I shook his hand in the Motor City
Without blues, there would be no rock n roll and without rock n roll, there's no life.
The Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton so good
You see how everyone else backed ALL the way off to give John Lee Hooker the stage....that's real respect.
yeah mon
respect
Gee thanx
Yes the blues master! Only two notes and more blues than Clapton

John Lee showing these kids how it's done. Boogie chillun ! the boys they are grinning from ear to ear.

Wait for it .. If you came here for John Lee You won't be disappointed!
John Lee Hooker just came in and took over the whole show. Soon as his signature beat starts going on, instant silence and you are hooked to it.
Watch out for The Hook...

John Lee Hooker awesome performance.
I love Albert King's playing, and I hear his influence in Clapton.
John Lee Hooker may have been the coolest man to ever live !!
BILL SLACK and he had a son named Keith
Eric Clapton and Keith Richards are pretty cool 😎 themselves, but yes, John Lee Hooker is bad ass cool.
My only disagreement with your comment is the word may.
Mick's magnetic performance, best vocals.Great Guitar, outstanding. Charlie Drums = Dynamic.Eric Clapton absolutely sublime. John Lee Hooker rocks.

@@Ramblin-Man You are correct. The local blues show on the radio, KNON, refers to Willie Dixon as the fifth member of the LZ.
I like the rhythm in this JLH boogie version. Mr. Watts is keeping it steady with his drumming.
This is what Brian Jones was dreaming of when he formed "The Rollin' Stones".
A gathering of musical legends. John Lee Hooker they broke the mould with him.
when Clapton was Clapton. He's still great but he was greater.
