The story of this symphony, and Schumann's troubled life, is a sad one. He declined quickly after finally finishing it, with Mendelssohn's encouragement.
@@robkeeleycomposer the outer movements seem to be influenced by Beethoven, as well as Schubert's great C Major Symphony, but the whimsical 2nd movement scherzo and incomparably sublime 3rd movement are pure Schumann.

I do prefer also Schumann's 2nd. A pleasure that rendition of Bernstein, smiling all the time, with the Wiener Philharmonker Orchestra. Happy the people who attended it.
@@Twentythousandlps Thank you for the info. Excuse me: were you at the Schumann concert ? (Saw/heard maestro Maisky at Paris in concert, 1991/1992. One of his precious instrument string broke off, the maestro himself fixed it up (amid heavy silence), then we audience applaused when the concert resumed). Thank you.
This song was referenced on the show Seinfeld, that's what led me here years ago. They referenced the version they heard as off putting but I find it quite nice.
Once every 5 or 10 years I come back to this symphony to see if I can like it... ... well, I still can't The 4th is the best, the 3rd is really enjoyable... the first is still so so...; this one... ouch :( I'll try again in 2028
You probably braced here for that annoying Mr. Obvious type person (like me) that would eventually come along to declare #2 was their favorite (and by a wide margin). But I like them all, except for one movement - that dirge of a 4th movement to the 3rd.
The opening of this symphony is so beautiful, it is prelude to heaven.
it always bewilders me how can Leonard Bernstein conduct without a score!! This man was a genius!!
Best performance of this symphony I have ever heard!

This magnificent work may be the best symphony ever written, and Bernstein's interpretation is amazing! Simply stupendous!
Greatest Romantic symphony at the very least.
The story of this symphony, and Schumann's troubled life, is a sad one. He declined quickly after finally finishing it, with Mendelssohn's encouragement.
I certainly think it’s the finest of the four. Lenny had a real understanding of Schumann, as he did with Haydn and Mahler.

The most touching of all symphonies - the expression of our yearning for love and fear of or own frailty.
Bernstein at his best conducting Schumann at his best. What a great genius he was. A true and unique Romantic.
Beyond beautiful!! Thank you Maestro!!!!!!!!!!!!"♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️😔

Great, full blooded performance of an underrated work..

That astounding Adagio! It is the foundation of all of Mahler.
This performance is
Leonard Bernstrin's of late
years ripe like autumn's
red apple.
All eyes on the Maestro, no women in the orchestra but youth in the audience: different times...
What do you mean "no women in the orchestra?" Is that a good thing?
RUclips, for heaven's sake! Ads right in the middle of movements. How vulgar.
Ces pubs sont une calamité 😢
Gosto muito da interpretação do Sinopoli! ❤❤❤❤❤
Micha Maisky is in the audience.
He had just played Schumann's Cello Concerto.

@@Twentythousandlps Allright. Merci.
One can see him sitting in the box to Bernstein’s right in some of the camera angles

Try again before then. It’s truly a symphonic masterpiece.
Listen to Schuberts c-major-symphony D.944, it's the key to understand this symphony
