The older I get and the many more times I've heard these symphonies the more I love them. Criticism of Schumann's orchestration seem COMPLETELY unwarranted. These symphonies are composed from the heart and are well-formed. Schumann - Bravissimo.

Lennie was, in my humble opinion, the absolute best conductor of our time, every second is anticipated, played with panache, thrillingly played by his orchestras - no matter who, what, when, where, and how! I've listened to almost all of his conducting on RUclips, as well as others, and his conducting stands far and away the best modern interpretations... this for our century. He was fantastic! A musical genius!

Compare Schumann's work played by other conductors, with Bernstein's presentations - there is NO comparison. The intense feelings generated by his conducting of Schumann's works are beyond belief! Give in to Schumann's grace and majesty, as conducted by Bernstein and you will wonder if what you are listening to is the music of the angels!

How does a Bernstein production of all four of Schumann’s symphonies only have 4.3k views?!?

What a Schumann 4, you even get a Furtwanglerian touch in 2:34:43 which I don’t think is necessary musically but fun

It's always shocking to see an all-male symphony orchestra. Vienna Philharmonic first admitted women in 1997.

Dennis Salinas Have you ever seen this fabulous all male orchestra play live? awe inspiring under the baton of Maestro bernstein love the formality and chameradie of the male Weiner Philharmonic.

Why is that shocking? If you are in surgery or on the plane would you prefer male or female surgeon/pilot or the best one at the moment? For me is more shocking if they employ the female musician just because she is female. That’s shocking and embarrassing. That nonsense only fly in 3rd world country once called US. Rest of the world is still preferring merit over DEI. I want to listen to the best orchestra possible at that moment, at that place. If you want to listen DEI orchestra go find them. It’s a free world. Nanobody is forcing you or me to listen, watch or read something you don’t wont.

Spring Symphony: trademark Bernstein elan but a rather pedestrian performance by the orchestra for me.
2nd Symphony: good performance of - for me - the least successful of Schumann's symphonies.
3rd Symphony: excellent performance, especially from the brass; the verve of the music is suited to Bernstein's style.
4th Symphony: another excellent performance full of life and sentiment.
Seem better in later symphonies than earlier. Schumann had a good interpreter here.
PS As an aside I did not see a single woman or non-Caucasian in the orchestra. That means no disrespect to them or their musicianship, however how times change from the 1980s to present times.

No 2 is by far best, but (like some other compositions) can only be appreciated by those who have lived through adversity.
