O Mensch! Gib Acht! Was spricht die tiefe Mitternacht? Weh spricht: Vergeh! Doch all' Lust will Ewigkeit -, - will tiefe, tiefe Ewigkeit!"

It is always fascinating to listen to pieces and then noticing the inspiration for another, as this one was probably an inspiration for John Williams while composing the music for The force awakens. Maybe it´s BS but I like the idea.
For those of us who are older, this a great testament to Bernstein's charismatic conducting. True, the playing is not perfect and details brought out by other conductors, such as the snarling muted trumpet near the end of the last movement, are not brought out. But the VPO was relatively new to Mahler at the time. Very moving!
At around 4:20 Bernstein does a "quack" sound. I was so surprised by that I had to scroll back and relisten to the part as I thought I may have heard a real duck through my noise cancelling headphones. Somehow it was awesome to catch this. Not sure why.
So true! Zubin Mehta conducting Mahler's 3rd is a poignant example: He, conducting the music all from his head and soul, looks absolutely drenched and takes his time recovering from what he has just gifted to the audience.
@@smoosikcompozer5935 while there is some merit to immediately applauding for the amazing performance, and in a way I agree with you, from a musical standpoint, and out of respect to the conductor, you should still never applaud until the piece is truly over. The last note takes time ringing throughout the hall, and, especially with for a piece with an ending as Mahler’s Third, it should be allowed to fade away naturally. Additionally, it is a part of the composer’s interpretation. Imagine people immediately applauded after the last note of a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth! Just a quick disclaimer, by no means should you take my word as fact though, I am not an expert on this topic, merely sharing from my musical experience.
@@potatodecimator131 Haha no your point is definitely valid, and I think Tckaik did an excellent job of setting that mood. I think Mahler's ending was deserves either. Tchaik 6 is one of my favorites btw! I write with Mahler and Tchaik in mind most times...

Hurray, what a nice music !
Shalom ❤
This Music is as old to them as Beatles Music is to us now 2023-05-08
Well, not exactly. Mahler's 3rd premiered in 1896. So it was a 76 year-old piece. The Beatles compositions are about 60 years old.
the horn part starting at 15:26 is insanity
At 1: 44: 25 Lenny winces when the 2 timpanists are not exactly together
O Mensch! Gib Acht!
Was spricht die tiefe Mitternacht?
"Ich schlief, ich schlief -,
aus tiefem Traum bin ich erwacht: -
Die Welt ist tief,
und tiefer als der Tag gedacht.
Tief ist ihr Weh -,
Lust - tiefer noch als Herzeleid.
Weh spricht: Vergeh!
Doch all' Lust will Ewigkeit -,
- will tiefe, tiefe Ewigkeit!"
da sprach der Herr Jesus: "Was stehst du denn hier?
Pls never take this down :-)
The trumpet chorale c. 1:38:00 is one the most transcendent passages in all of music....
He even taps his foot in time!
It is always fascinating to listen to pieces and then noticing the inspiration for another, as this one was probably an inspiration for John Williams while composing the music for The force awakens. Maybe it´s BS but I like the idea.
He does the best Bradley Cooper imitation, ever.
🤣
Mahler 3 tells such a dramatic and compelling story. Bernstein's interpretation is great
To have been sitting in that audience on that particular performance…
For those of us who are older, this a great testament to Bernstein's charismatic conducting. True, the playing is not perfect and details brought out by other conductors, such as the snarling muted trumpet near the end of the last movement, are not brought out. But the VPO was relatively new to Mahler at the time. Very moving!
At around 4:20 Bernstein does a "quack" sound. I was so surprised by that I had to scroll back and relisten to the part as I thought I may have heard a real duck through my noise cancelling headphones. Somehow it was awesome to catch this. Not sure why.
No I heard the quak while walking from the conservatoire I learn at
What is it about the Bernstein interpretations of Mahler that make them so unique?
L.Bernstein et Wph, très bien !
One should never shout or applaud until the conductor lowers his arms.
Thanks for mentioning it, I totally agree, it kills the atmosphere
I would see it as an honor. The music was so compelling that one couldn't wait to exclaim with joy...and this piece deserves it!

If one were to say the history of mankind is the history of war, few would disagree....
Lenny, believe me, the second violinist is a really nice guy.
