In the 1980s, I was living in San Francisco when he gave a performance with the Munich Philharmonic. There was one work on the program: Bruckner Symphony No.4. I "sort of" knew who Celibidache was, but I'd never heard the Fourth Symphony, not even from recordings. It would be an understatement to say it was a stunning performance.
One can hear the music coming together like drops of water...true to his philosophy; The music is articulated at a pace, organically suitable for the human brain; and comprehension.
Celibidache is such an amazing conductor! Sometimes his tempos are very slow but always full of musical expression. The listener is aware of the music structure in a way rarely heard with other conductors. His performances unveil hidden details and the orchestral ensemble is astonishing. He rejected the recording studio but his recorded performances are close to perfection. This reunion with his old orchestra 38 years later will remain as the testamente of a legendary conductor.
Moving to see Celibidache conducting Bruckner's masterpiece with the Berliner Philharmoniker again. In another historical performance, Celibidache conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker; Beethoven's Egmont Ouverture in 1950 in the ruins of the Old Philharmonie in Berlin. Worth seeing too!
I love this recording for the amount of things is possible to study and learn here. Compare with his direction with Muncher Phil... here we see a fight for mutual comprehension, an trial and strive for understandig each other that seems almost lost control, coherence and even unity. Still, they where the best musicians at the moment, and this meeting is - despite all problems - marvelous... thanks for posting it!

Sometimes it takes a time to get used to his slow tempi but it is a unique experience indeed. Celibidache said in an interview that he plays as fast as possible but it has to sound ( or something like that) .
Because a slow tempo is worth it if it shows the details and helps the counterpoint to be more appreciated...compare that with Karajan who drowns out half the orchestration.
BEAUTIFULLY SAID!...It's what the man intended...he was the master at extracting every last little nuance out of the score!. Finish violinist, Satu Venska who played all these Bruchner symphonies under Celibidache with the Munich SO, exclaimed "The orchestra could play all these Bruckner Symphonies without the score in front of them "after Celibidache!!!"
Sorry, but the end of the 1st movemant is ruined because the strings are behind the brass one beat. And this for a very long sequence. Typical result of this conductor's unusual beating style.
I must be ignorant for I don't hear what ulrich maier and kimurico mention about the strings and brass being out of synch at the end of the spectacular first movement. Ignorance is bliss, for all I hear, as richard williams and mike dunn note, is a true maestro lingering as long as possible over every heavenly note. Celibidache adores this music and through the medium of the massed forces of the orchestra, we can adore it in the same way. A miracle!
RIIGHT Joe!!! Satu Vanska the Finnish Violinist who played with the MSO and now works in Sydney with the ASC, commented that Celibedache schooled the MSO so thoroughly that to this day they could play Bruckner perfectly without the music in front of them!
BRAVO!!!
At 5:14, for some bars, Celibidache stops conducting and goes into a sort of trance. I think that he is not only simply enjoying that musical passage, but he is thinking of how the Berliner Philharmoniker are playing it, corresponding to his vision of music. In his mind, it's like if in that moment he is closing a circle after a whole career. These seconds are moving.
There are conductors who use the podium as an aerobic exercise machine and then there was Celi who was THE master at his art even when he couldn't stand up.
I salute you... From ignorance proceeds knowledge. This is known as Bruckner's 'Wagner' symphony so you might also like Richard Wagner, particularly if you like mythology. I recorded this very performance off BBC Radio 3 in the 90s and it's still my favourite symphony, even above Beethoven's 5th and 6th. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of Mahler (too many grief hounds wailing about the adagio in the 5th), but his 4th symphony is astounding, particularly the final movement with the beautiful solo Der Himmliches Leben (The Heavenly Life).
Celibidache will always be a beacon in the history of orchestral music. He was one of the few conductors who rehearsed an orchestra, so that each player blossomed into a soloist during the performance, with little conductorial prompting.
I'm a Korean. Due to the dizzying news happening in Korea these days, I am in a very bad mood. I have a sound source of Bruckner's 7th Symphony conducted by Karl Böhm, but while looking for another version, I saw a video of Chelibidake and listened to it while having lunch. The performance that seems to endure the sadness that is about to burst is truly a masterpiece.😭 I listen well. 👍👍
Karl Bohm.... Not my favourite at all and Celibidache renowned for saying quite rightly I my opinion that Bohm didn't have an ounce of music in him.... Enjoy this version sir....
"the sadness that is about to burst..." you have indeed listened well! Can't speak to Bohm not having heard it, but I find Celibidache the ultimate Bruckner conductor and this Bruckner's ultimate work. Sublime!
How I wish all of Celi's performances were videoed with the cameras focusing on him only. The collection would have provided master classes for all other conductors and students of conducting in conveying the underlying meanings and emotions of a piece of music to the orchestra as well as the audience.
From all the conductor I've heard and collected, Maestro Celibidache *IS* the only conductor who make the slow tempo become *eizigartiges Erlebnis* (one of the kind...). The first 4 minutes Maestro present the 1st Movement, i seem to see an other dimension, it brought me to wet my eyes... It was that beautiful. Btw, i have other conducter on my collection.
I read one negative comment but kept reading and many from Hispanic countries were so positive and happy about Bruckner and Celibidache , yes world , this is amazing !
I was amazed at the solemn expression from 24 minutes and 4 seconds. Isn't there a conductor who expressed the last part of the first movement so slowly and philosophically?
To have 52 thumb down it means that we have to do with some novices. They don't know that Bruckner with Celibidache is the most accurate and wonderful interpretation.
Eh...I don't know about that dismissive note regarding "novices." While I can fully appreciate that Celibidache is bringing to bear his interpretation, this is how *most* of his interpretations go, and honestly, the music here (and elsewhere) has a tendency to lose its momentum, missing so much of the big forest for the sake of the trees. No doubt, there were a couple of beautiful sections of this recording, but on the whole, there are man other celebrated, beautiful recordings, including my favorite - Stanislaw Skrowaczewski.
You can't call this performance accurate when the opening is marked minim (half note) = 52 bpm in the score and celibidache barely reaches 30 bpm. While the orchestral sound is heavenly, there is so much loss of momentum and sustain in the musical line. I recommend listening to some performances that manage to keep it moving in a way that actually improves the feeling of sustain. Try the newly remastered Furtwangler performance or - if you can handle the older recording quality - Toscanini.
Heard the Berlin Philharmonic play this at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden, early 2024. Absolutely sublime. I've rarerly seen an audience go so crazy.

Sorry, but the end of the 1st movemant is ruined because the strings are behind the brass one beat. And this for a very long sequence. Typical result of this conductor's unusual beating style.
@@ulrichmaier8314totalmente correcto, es un detalle difícil, estropea todo el final 👌
A miracle!
Great sound for a 30 years old recording. Thank you !
👍
Celibidache's pursuit of the truth is so beautiful.
The greatest Bruckner conductor.
NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT Joe! > God's Composer...God's Conductor...Heavenly Music!
RIIGHT Joe!!! Satu Vanska the Finnish Violinist who played with the MSO and now works in Sydney with the ASC, commented that Celibedache schooled the MSO so thoroughly that to this day they could play Bruckner perfectly without the music in front of them!
(I hope I quoted this stuff correctly!)
yes indeed! and this, the greatest Bruckner symphony.
One of the best versions ever ! THANK YOU SO MUCH !

All the recordings in which Celibidache was involved are historical and superlative.
Have you seen his Brahmsrequiem with the Munich orchestra? Horrible! Tempi, intonation, sound - completely derailed.
Following Karajan's principle: "Sometimes you have to stop conducting and let the orchestra play."
I rather think he tries to convey to the orchestra not to put too much intensity into this passage.
He is on record as saying that the existence of Bruckner is a gift from God
@@henrykaspar3634 this is the musical truth, indeed...
Also from 7.30 to 8.00...also from the start to the end...
There are conductors who use the podium as an aerobic exercise machine and then there was Celi who was THE master at his art even when he couldn't stand up.
"There are conductors who use the podium as an aerobic machine" Just like Bernstein!!

The wonderfulness of Celibidache’s Bruckner is amazing by an order of magnitude more awesome
I am a proud Japanese Brucknerian
I know nothing but this Music is absolutely ART at the highest level.
Well said Wayne! I absolutely agree with you!
When I hear the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th... the 7th becomes a breath of fresh air in the whole vast landscape of the massive Brucknerian environment.
The most authentic Bruckner!
Celibidache will always be a beacon in the history of orchestral music. He was one of the few conductors who rehearsed an orchestra, so that each player blossomed into a soloist during the performance, with little conductorial prompting.
👍
interesting thanks
I'm a Korean. Due to the dizzying news happening in Korea these days, I am in a very bad mood.
I have a sound source of Bruckner's 7th Symphony conducted by Karl Böhm, but while looking for another version,
I saw a video of Chelibidake and listened to it while having lunch.
The performance that seems to endure the sadness that is about to burst is truly a masterpiece.😭
I listen well.
Sublime!
Exactamente! Escribiste lo que yo siento.
The man was not easy to work with, but damn did he ever make an orchestra sound amazing.
tough love makes for great students

Primarily he is a conductor

Qué maravillosa interpretación. Magnífico tempo. Cómo disfruta el maestro! SUBLIME!!!!
Magnificent, silky and organic...
How I wish all of Celi's performances were videoed with the cameras focusing on him only. The collection would have provided master classes for all other conductors and students of conducting in conveying the underlying meanings and emotions of a piece of music to the orchestra as well as the audience.
Words cannot possibly describe the power of this music!
👍
are you familiar with the second movement of the fifth? I do agree with you however.
@@larryprimeau5885 the fifth is my favourite symphony of Bruckner- the adagio is sublime.
WOW! Great thanks for uploading this historical performance!
Paradise on Earth
Listening Celi's performance, even Muse will be jealous.

Maravilloso concierto.
Mu favourite Adagio's version is this by Celi and BPO.
1:01:20 and next 3-4 seconds!!!..Only Celibidache knew how to adorne performanse with such gestures !!!
Simplemente, Muchas Gracias por compartir.
Eccezionale direzione eccezionale orchestra ed esecuzione.
I was amazed at the solemn expression from 24 minutes and 4 seconds. Isn't there a conductor who expressed the last part of the first movement so slowly and philosophically?
Unforgettable!!!
Když slyším tuto symfonii ,vypadá svět krásný.diky za nadlidskost
Thank you for explaining the context of this performance. Most welcome & appreciated.
A marvellous performance
To have 52 thumb down it means that we have to do with some novices. They don't know that Bruckner with Celibidache is the most accurate and wonderful interpretation.
They don't have the time to wait for the end
The composer himself would be so moved if he knew.
👍
Bravo! Wonderfully interpretation!
Splendide.
