Word of advice from an editor who works at a publishing house: YOU DO NOT NEED AN AGENT. (Particularly in this case, but also in general.) An agent's job is to find creators and sell their work to publishers. They can be good if you have no contacts in the publishing industry. But if you already have an in, or your book is already published, all an agent will do is take 15% of your royalties forever.
But what about editing? Agents are NOT professional editors. While they do sometimes perform editing, it's usually to make a work more approachable for a publisher prior to submission. If you want an editor who will genuinely improve your writing, then hire a professional editor.
But what if dealing with the publisher is scary, and you want to make sure you get a fair contract from them? Then talk to a contract lawyer! It's a misconception that agents have any legal training whatsoever, so if you need someone to look over your contract and ensure that it is not 1. giving away your IP, 2. going to lock you into producing sequels, or 3. overall parasitic and bad for your interests (which big publishing contracts often are, because their goal is to make money, not promote you) then please talk to a lawyer before signing.
To conclude, an agent is not necessarily a bad route, particularly if you have no experience with the publishing world at all. They can be a good friend and guide, and they can shop your book around to publishers for you (though don't expect them to make the best possible deal - they'll usually take the quickest and easiest). My advice would be to talk to an agent casually to learn the ropes of the publishing world, but you don't need one to sell your book for you. In the case of "Unfamiliar", Haley's online following already did what an agent would have done. In most other cases, unless you already have some success and following, agents won't touch your work because it will be too unique and unknown. They may even want you to change it so it's easier to sell. The rule of the traditional publishing world, including agents, is "make money first".
For all of you aspiring authors and artists, there is an alternate path in either indie publishing or self publishing. If you would like to know more about those options, I'd recommend checking out Journey Press's blog: The Path to Publishing. journeypress.com/2020/10/12/the-path-to-publishing-part-one/ Journey Press is an independent, queer press who are known for giving out advice and supporting small creators. If you have more questions, you may find the answer there.

tl;dr: If you've already got momentum, an agent is just feeding off of it. If you don't have momentum, an agent won't be interested. Good job for making it on your own, and keep it up! :)

thank you!!! for me it was a mix of being consistent and also trying to make sure I was posting in lots of places; being visible is the most important thing at the start I think, you gotta make sure people have as many opportunities to learn about your art and story as possible.

I remember seeing Paolini by hapistance going to hastings to rent a movie, just the dorkiest teen imaginable standing at a table by himself, nobody else was there for his book signing. I was justa kid so I had him sign a pamphlet, I told him I want his signature so I can say I met him when he was famous. Honestly I was just trying to be supportive but damn he blew up
