I know she'll never ever read this but Hayley is the reason I draw today, I've been watching her videos since I was 12 and I'm 16 now. Its crazy how shes improved so much since these early pages of unfamiliar I'm so proud of her, I've been such a huge fan and the first few pages of my first ever sketchbook are drawings of the vampire girl from her [Drawing a Vampire babe] video 🥺 shes taught me so much for years and I know alot of us can say the same :^) thank you so much Lavender towne!♡
The worst thing you can do when creating a comic:
Not actually doing the damn comic, either you’re waiting until you’re better at drawing or you’re still “planning” when in reality, you just don’t know where to start. JUST DO IT DAMMIT! (But also don’t be lazy about it please)

RandomArt Lizard you could start by writing parts of the book you have in your head for practice. That way, you can get some practice in how you want to write it while not being too stressed about it :))

I feel this. I tend to draw characters with a lot of angles and straight lines, so I sometimes get a bit jealous of lavendertownes soft round adorable style.
Cute things generally have soft and organic shapes because babies are made of those shapes. I use very angular lines, so my preferred strategy for making "cute" shapes is to hide softer forms in the negative space of the line.

This might be out of context with the video but maybe you could try turning bugs into cute girls/guys? There are some really cool and pretty insects out there that you could make character designs out of ! For example orchid mantises, silkworm/rosy maple moth, the bunny harvestman... uhh i dunno other cool bugs

I would just like to say what you said about starting is the hardest part and being scared to start something is like completely normal was really inspiring. I’m a small RUclipsr trying to get into the art community and what you said really helped me boost my confidence. I think it was the little push I needed! I’ve been too scared to use my own art in my videos so I’ve been using gacha but with what you said, I think I’m going to make my next vid an animatic. Her old art used to be very good, but her improvement is really noticeable. Go back and watch her old vids and you will see a ton of improvement. I love how she accepts the mistakes in her art, fixes it when possible, and moves on, plus she honestly draws really really well. Her mindset for drawing, I think, is a really healthy mindset to have. To always keep improving, keep fixing mistakes when possible, but also to accept anything not fixable and move on. I just really like her art and she’s a huge inspiration for me.

I actually wrote a 2 page report on this comic last year for a class. This is exactly the advice I need to hear. I’ve been struggling to start my dream project for whatever reason but I need to push myself to start at least before the year is over

Mint treats I’ve never heard someone say Haley is a god. It’s normal for beginners or decent artists to think a pro’s old art is beautiful. I think it’s cute and not as bad as she says it is, but I’m not a pro so I wouldn’t know. Of course her updated version is 10x better

Tip: if you cant figure out the structure of your ocs house then use or make a floor plan thats appealing and use 3d software to make it pop out so everything can look proportional (i use sketchup which is free and you dont have to download. I even use it on my school computer)

I just wanna thank you. You give me the motivation to start my own webtoon. During quarantine i tried to start working on the script and character designs, but it wasn't until recently that i actually started drawing the pages. And you were right! Starting it really pushed me forward. Before, i was stuck at planning and didn't know what else to draw. But now that I've started, i start to notice the things that i actually need in my comics like the background and stuff. Also looking at a finished page really made me happy and realize my goal. Thank you

Unfamiliar has really inspired me to practice a bit more and go back to abandoned projects, there really is such a huge difference between the newer and older pages. When an example of newer page(s) came up and was compared it really did shock me. I love seeing how far people come, and thinking about how I might someday be able to see the same in my own work. Sorry if this was a bit ramble-y, but yeah.. thank you LavenderTowne! . w .

I am so happy you made this comic because this was what got me into webcomics. I still remember hearing long time ago (around 2017) about how you had a comic so I got tapas and started reading. On the way I found so many more comics that are also dear to my heart and it has inspired me to want to make one of ny own. I do have one that I will finally be able to continue uploading soon (computer didn't work) and then I have a passion project that I plan on making very very long term so I am perfecting every detail I can so I don't go in blind on that one. I am so thankful for you and how you have inspired me as an artist. I have followed you since that first left and right challenge and I love how much you have grown and how much you have helped me grow. Thank you so much.

My favorite change is the last two panels, cause the original wasn't that bad even tho it was very wonky, but in the new page the expressions and the body language is so much better! And the ghost bride looks super cool now too. It's like *chef kiss*

This is amazing. You are such an incredible artist if you are able to look back at your old art and instead of cringing or just saying "it's alright" you easily recognize the mistakes and know what went right or wrong. I wish there were more people like you 💞

Also, dudette, I totally get the whole "don't go back and redo your old comic pages" thing. 😝 I cringe so much looking back at my old comic pages but I know if I redid them it would just consume my entire life, haha.
On the other hand, I have another series that never got out of the concept art and scripting phase which I reopened the other day after putting it on pause for a couple years... Yeah, I'm just gonna redesign everyone and then continue forward in my current style... 😂 My Same Face & Same Body Syndromes were sooooo bad back then... 😭

you can still practice/pursue art even if you’re studying something else (you could take art courses online, learn from youtube, books, etc.), that route could make both you and your family happy. but ultimately it’s your choice, and if you’re young you still have plenty of time to think about if you want to go to art school or not.

When you popped up the modern examples of your comic panels, I had to pause because of how cute and beautiful they were. Like, _oh my god_
the good thing about having a comic that its been made since 2016, is that you can gradually see how much you have improved!
I checked out your comics on webtoon and tried to ♡ each one of them, your comics are amazing and I love the effort you put in.
I kinda like the ghost eye you did in the old page better.
But everything else is way better.
I don’t understand how someone could call it ugly, yes the backgrounds could be more detailed, and it could have less dialogue, but I still think it’s amazing.
