Al Jarreau is the first, and maybe the only vocalist to win a Grammy Award as the best male vocalist in the Pop, Jazz, and R&B categories. A true musical genius!
Legend. The original is an instrumental written by saxophonist Paul Desmond and performed by the Dave Brubeck Quartet - named for its 5/4 time signature. Iola Brubeck, Dave's wife, wrote the lyrics after the fact. Fun fact: when Desmond died in 1977, he left the royalty rights to this song to the American Red Cross. Nothing would make me happier than for you to carefully dip your big toe into some jazz reactions. Very few people are doing them on RUclips, and there is a very, very, very deep well of awesome stuff for you to check out.
Second the motion. Ella, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Manhattan Transfer... MIles, 'Trane, Blakey.... and all that jazz rock from the 70s... hardly know where to start
Certainly agree that that's a journey to take.Take Five is the title track from Dave Brubeck's album that explored songs with unusual time signatures. Definitely some land for exploring and reacting.
I'm one of the Al Jarreau die hard fans! Was lucky to see him in concert TWICE! Nobody ever will match his skills!!! In concert he'd free style a song for 10-15 minutes. A true savant. So glad you're discovering him Jamel. Do yourself a favor and delve deeper into his recordings. You won't be disappointed and we will all be in for more treats like this one.

One of my favorites by Al Jarreau is "Boogie Down". Played an arrangement of that for marching band. Tons of fun with a funky groove. I knew he was very jazzy, but this video I had never seen before, with his scat skills on fire. This channel is so good because we all can learn from each other and discover new sides to artists we might not have heard from in years. Keep up the great work Jamel, and thanks so much.
Al Jarreau was an amazingly talented musician and just as important, he seemed to be a great guy. i saw him 2-3 times in the 80's and they were spectacular shows.
I saw him live in 1978 in college. He performed this and so many other great vocal gymnastics. Everyone in the audience was spellbound and left the concert with their mouths wide open. Amazing!
Early '80's, we had a staff birthday party at a fancy pizza place on Ventura Boulevard, place had a jazz bar. Turns out it was also Al Jarreau's hangout, and he was hanging out, doing stuff like this totally off the cuff. Scat jazz singing puts rap and hip-hop to deep, deep shame. These are the things the bandits "sample". When it was cake time, Al came over and sang Happy Birthday to Skeeve, and hung out for a while. Nice, open, generous smart guy. RIP.
That was INCREDABLE!!! As great as Al was, gotta give a shout out to the band being able to follow everthing he was improvising on the SPOT!!! THAT WAS AS SMOOTH AS IT GETS!!!!
Thanks to whoever requested this! Al Jarreau is the predecessor to performers like Bobby McFerrin. I wonder if even Bobby could rival this performance. Amazing use of the voice as instrument.
A coworker in the 70's introduced me to Al, and I was immediately blown away. The last live concert I went to was Al with George Benson - worth staying up late for.
This is the thing I've noticed in many, but not all, the present performers: they're so attuned into 'looking good', posing, styling, while not honing any vocal chops they may have. Persona over talent. Mr. Jarreau just put it out there, because he was secure in his talent.
This makes me cry so much because thats EXACTLY what drew me in to this man. His comfortablilty within himself. ! He's one of my biggest vocal inspirations
Al engaging in the best vocalese I ever heard. Taking an established Jazz Classic and putting words to the lines, made popular by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and Manhattan Transfer. But Al takes it to the next level here, not only vocaleseing but scatting and beat boxing (before beat boxing was a thing) to the Dave Brubeck classic “Take Five”. Taking Genius and putting his own genius spin on the song.
We have to remember that Al had a stammering issue all through his life. So beautiful and powerful to see him change his weakness into a language that music worms couldn't get enough of. That's true artistry man!
I got out of the Army in the summer of 1974. Upon returning to New York, my friend and I went to a concert in Central Park featuring the group Chicago. As it turned out Al Jarreau opened for them. Al Jarreau is on this album, too, along with a very young Tevin Campbell.
Finally! Someone doing this man. Cool Kat fr. What a voice!! 🎤Morning Mr Radio 🎤🎷🎵
I learned something new today. I never knew this song had lyrics. I've heard many versions, but this the first with lyrics. I could listen to Brubeck on repeat all day long. I love Al Jarreau, too. What an awesome combination! Thanks, Jamel.
Really regret I never saw him in concert. Such talent. His voice resonates so well in his whole range. Great sonic treat with a good sound system
The listing said you reviewing Al Jarreau... Man, I started watching when you did the Doobies and Steely Dan (my all-time faves), but you got my upvote on Jarreau before I hit play. If that's where you're going, I'm already there. Thumbs up!
