My Mom attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin with both Al Jarreau and Harrison Ford. Al excelled in music. Harrison excelled in acting. My Mom excelled in tax law. That's why you've only heard of two out of those three.
First time I heard you, my jaw just dropped - a vocal masterpiece. His voice is an instrument never heard before (by me anyway). RIP Mr Jarreau, you were unique and I miss you so much.
My favorite artist of all time who embodied music. Can't imagine him doing anything else. Saw him in concert many times and each concert was an adventure because you never knew what he'd do. I remember the day he died because it was my birthday. I'll always have the gift of his music. ♥️
What you've witnessed is not a freak but a wonder. The wonderful Mr. Al Jarreau was nothing short of remarkable. He was classically trained vocally and played several instruments as well. I had the pleasure of seeing him live a couple of times. The man was pure energy. Watching him you'd feel so alive, as if you were on an adventure! You couldn't look away or you'd surely miss something!
1st saw Al in London back in the 70's. Saw him many times, the last being at Ronnie Scotts July 2016, year before he passed & lucky enough to have a photo together & speak with him. What a musician. What a special Man. x
What a world that celebrates Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Scatman Crothers, Bobby McFerrin, Ben Vereen, Joe Cocker, Billie Holiday, Melanie, Jimmy Durante, and Louis Armstrong? Each an artist with a unique voice that broadened and redefined their genre, style, and artistry
One of the best concerts I have ever seen was Al Jarreau in a small club in San Francisco in the early 80's. It was amazing, mind blowing and unforgettable!
Wow! Take 5 is one of my favorite jazz songs. Yes it does have lyrics. This is a fantastic interpretation. Thank you for reminding me of Jarreau, I need to revisit his catalog.
My husband took us on our first date to see Al. His opening act was Chama Kahn. Seriously, how can it get any better? After 34 years of marriage, we saw him every single time he came to Vegas. We saw him about 10 times, no show was the same. But every show was a unique one. I actually bawled all day the day he died. There is no singer who can hold a candle to his love of music, replicating instruments, scatting, etc. Al Jarreau is our song. Every single song he performed was a magical experience. There is no one today, or even in the future, who can truly make you a part of his music, his stories, his life. There are no words to describe my love of Al Jarreau. People ask if you could only listen to one artist for the rest of your life. Hands down. The Late Great Mr. AL Jarreau. P.S. You can vacuum your home in 1/3rd of the time, listening to this song. Just saying 😊 An amazing human being, husband, father, musician, and truly a gift to us all. My deepest gratitude for listening to the late great Mr. Al Jarreau. This absolutely made my crappy day completely turn around. Thank you for your reaction, for knowing who this incredible artist was, and the influence his magical talents gave the world.
My all time favorite male vocalist. He is magic and every time I had the pleasure to see him live has been a great joy. Thank you so much for your reactions to this. His concert in London Video is great. Especially the live version of "Our Love". That was my and my wife's wedding song. Take Care Harri
Al rocked. I'm so glad you loved it I was so fortunate to grow up with the family in which jazz was the soundscape in our house good food good music good conversation good reading. This personifies what it is to be a cultured individual who can take every genre and put it together at the same time. Thank you so much again for playing this great tune
In the summer of 1976 I was living next door to a dude who was the booking agent for a new club in Boulder called The Blue Note. Craig Webb had also been BB King's road manager for a spell and was deeply connected in the music business. His cousin Marvin Graves aka Henchi was co-leader of the Freddi-Henchi Band, a legendary Colorado Front Range funk and dance band. The parties were amazing and Henchi and I became lifelong friends over the years until he passed in 2012. But when I first moved into that house, Craig used to come over every night as soon as we fired up our grill with a fat spliff of Gold Columbian and he would throw his steak on the grill while he smoked us out. One night he said he had booked this guy at the Blue Note and we should come to see him. "I'll leave your names on the guest list at the door. You never seen nothin' like him." was all he said. We arrived early and sat at the very front table as Al Jarreau blew our minds. He told the audience he had signed a recording contract with a new label for his second album coming out later that year, Glow, that it was going to be big, and he might not be able to play these kinds of venues forever but he would never forget these audiences. He instantly became my favorite artist and I saw him countless times in clubs over then next year or so before he really hit it big in the states. I continued to see him in bigger theaters over the years. The last time I saw him was about ten or twelve years ago at Red Rocks outside of Denver in Mayor Wellington Webb's (no relation to Craig) Jazz Festival with BB KIng. He hadn't changed a bit. So sad when he passed so young. RIP Al Jarreau and RIP Henchi. Two of the sweetest voices and kindest people I've ever met.
The original recording of TAKE FIVE was released as an instrumental jazz piece for a quartet in 1959. This is from Wikipedia: The piece has been a staple of jazz and pop music since it was released, and has been covered many times, in a variety of genres. The first known cover was by Carmen McRae on the 1961 live album Take Five Live,[m] supported by Brubeck, Gene Wright and Morello.[45][46] For the recording, McRae sang lyrics written by Brubeck's wife Iola; these lyrics would later be used for other vocal recordings.
One of the first jazz pieces i was exposed to at a fairly young age was Dave Brubeck's TAKE FIVE. A favorite of mine, still. It was notable for it's time signatue, that 5/4 thing. But i'm quite certain that i have heard a cover of the tune (released originally as a quartet instrumental) with an added lyrical vocal prior to AJ's performance.
He knows it. He's mentioned in part of the video I have never heard anybody sing along to this song and I know this song very well from Dave Brubeck and many people who have covered it
He knows it. He's mentioned in part of the video I have never heard anybody sing along to this song and I know this song very well from Dave Brubeck and many people who have covered it
Hi Mr. Harri, As I have said many times, lots of singers voice have referred to as an Instrument, this man Mr. Al really has an Instrument !!.. Love It.. ♠W.G.
WOW! I'm really surprised Harri that you haven't done a reaction/tribute to Olivia Newton John. She was a music icon! Had a music career that spanned 50+ years, sold over 100 million records worldwide. won several Granmys and starred in one of the greatest musicals of our time and had numerous hit songs. She was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979. She recently passed away on Aug 8, 2022 after a 30 year battle with breast cancer.
I was a kid in the 60's when this song was in the super market or when I get a haircut, so it's precious to me. I love Brubeck, so much so if someone said to me a guy is skating words to it, I will be like George Carlin, "Get the blank outta here!" But if someone said Al Jarreau is doing it, I'd run to the record store to buy it. HarriBest has good reactions and is passionate about good music.
Hahahaha he is a lot and definitely not for everyone. But for me, he's beyond special. I've never seen a singer have so much fun and feel the music the way he does. He's my biggest inspiration next to Stevie Wonder because Al's approach to every performance whether he sounds great or not is one of pure joy that at least for me I can't help but get swept into:))😊
oh Hari, for another "Mind Bazooka"--- check out Al Jarreau with Bobby McFerrin, and John Hendricks, all doing vocal scat to the Miles Davis song, "Freddie the Freeloader"... They all manage to emulate the original sax solos note for note...with their voices.
Told you so, Harri! Knew your mind would be blown. Got to see him live back in the '90's...it was awesome!!! For more great scat, give a listen to Tania Maria "Come to Me" live. It is on the Geepereet chnnel.
The original Take Five, by the Dave Brubeck Five in 1958 is really worth a listen. I discovered it much, much later than that and still go back to it periodically. You owe it to yourself Harri to just give it a listen. BTW, it is an instrumental only, done by a Jazz quartet.
This is different.😊👍Thank you Harri! Could you react to The Rain, The Park And Other Things, Indian Lake, We Can Fly,........by The Cowsills. Thank you so much!
This is the first time I have heard THIS version, Al went some directions I hadn't heard previously. Not my favorite; there is a version with George Benson (viewed your This Masquerade the other day) and Al that I prefer to this, genius too! Your Summer Breeze/Seals and Crofts tuned me in to your channel. Long-time fan of all these artists and your channel too!❤🧡❤
Really Hari You liked this? I cant say so I did. Actually I found it kinda unpleasant, After a minute or two it actually annoyed me and I turned it off.
My Mom attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin with both Al Jarreau and Harrison Ford. Al excelled in music. Harrison excelled in acting. My Mom excelled in tax law. That's why you've only heard of two out of those three.
We’ve heard of 3 of them now 😃
OMG-Good one! (Hopefully Al and Harrison are clients.)
Gooood!!!😂😂😂
@@Calmontheoutside were :( as Al is gone now 😭 RIP AL
His solo on Spain (I can Recall), was also fantastic 👏
I’ve never seen this man and this is absolutely fucking brilliant
At about 6:25 the keyboardist and drummer just look at each other with a smile to each other like they're groovin' with greatness.
First time I heard you, my jaw just dropped - a vocal masterpiece. His voice is an instrument never heard before (by me anyway). RIP Mr Jarreau, you were unique and I miss you so much.
Al Jarreau, was so awesome!! I have been listening to him since I was about 20 years old. He is truly missed. But, he left us so much wonderful music.
Jarreau is nothing less than jazz personified and pure art. This is a good example of his creativity.
So glad you discovered this 24 carat gem. The Brubeck original is an iconic classic, but Al elevates it.
The way he uses his voice like a musical instrument is amazing.
My favorite artist of all time who embodied music. Can't imagine him doing anything else. Saw him in concert many times and each concert was an adventure because you never knew what he'd do. I remember the day he died because it was my birthday. I'll always have the gift of his music. ♥️
Al Jarreau and George Benson actually did an album together! Love both of them.🖖🏼

That was phenomenal. The only other person I know of who can use his voice as an instrument like this is Bobby McFerrin.
They actually worked together a few times too haha.
Mel Torme, too
@@janetschmitt6760 The "Velvet Fog" ... smooth! Harry Anderson would agree.
"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose ..."
R.I.P Bro Al... thank you for all your talent and thank you for sharing it with the world.
Nothing compares to him… he was the Hero of my childhood…
One of the best concerts I have ever seen was Al Jarreau in a small club in San Francisco in the early 80's. It was amazing, mind blowing and unforgettable!
The best🎶🎶 Alwin Lopez Jarreau 3/12/1949-2/12/2017 may he continue to rest in peace 🎶
Perhaps the best cover of any song ever made...
The original Brubeck version is incredible. First Jazz song ever to sell over 1M copies. Used to hear this a lot on the radio when I was young.
Wow! Take 5 is one of my favorite jazz songs. Yes it does have lyrics. This is a fantastic interpretation. Thank you for reminding me of Jarreau, I need to revisit his catalog.

Did you mean Chaka? What a date! Good taste!
I had a Jazz music teacher at UCLA introduce me to the best "scat" singer on the planet. That would be Al Jarreau!
Human instrument! Super human!
My all time favorite male vocalist. He is magic and every time I had the pleasure to see him live has been a great joy. Thank you so much for your reactions to this. One of the most amazing vocal performances ever. Jarreau in his creative prime. Super bad indeed!
Fantastic rendition of Dave Brubeck’s classic jazz hit Take Five. Wow!
I'm glad someo else recognized this!
I think Mornin is my favorite Al Jarreau song. His voice is so rich and strong in that song. It's in heavy rotation on my playlist
Jarreau..The Goat ..Scat.. JazzMan!
I loved his songs! Listen to Your Heartbeat was my favorite. 💖
Magical, musical genius 🎶💜
I was just watching this the other day. I was going to request it.

You should hear what he does to Summertime and Try a Little Tenderness. Amazing!

For real I had to come back just to see and hear it again and my mind is still blown. Will probably be something I listen to often thanks for sharing
Another artist who makes music with his whole body is Bobby Mcferrin. Check out his rendition of Blackbird.
I’ve never heard a man sing instruments the way this man does
Elton John is my favorite singer. But Mr.Jarreau's version of EJ's "Your song" is the most beautiful thing I've heard. He was a gifted artist.
Agree❤❤

I’ve never heard Take Five sung either. This was a good one, Harri! Thank you.
Quand il chante il est simplement en totale liberté et ca c 'est extra bon...La plupart du temps il arrive meme a garder le sourire.. J 'ai tous ses album....
He also covers "Blue Rondo a la Turk", Brubeck's paean to 9/8. Strangely, I was paean when I first heard the song.

OMG how amazing. I love the song Take Five but I’ve never heard it done like this ☮️💜 Unbelievable how good he is. Great choice Harri.
Such a great talented artist.
I had to rewind this video three times because it was so incredible.

Al Jarreau, the true human beatbox.
My absolutely favorite song by Al Jarreau is "I will be here for you" - which is a great love song to a lover.
You nailed it Harri; ridiculous.
Brilliant. But what a fabulous talent Dave Brubeck was I love his music. ❤
Harri, thanks for sharing, I think Al Jarreau is great
You have to hear his song Morning it's great.
You've gotta check out the original version by Dave Brubeck. You won't be disappointed.

React to We Got By - the live version sung by him
I was told that Paul Desmonde's wife wrote the lyrics
fOR ME IS THE BETTER SINGER ALL THE TIME. Love HiS MODULATION VOICE...
Really Hari You liked this? I cant say so I did. Actually I found it kinda unpleasant, After a minute or two it actually annoyed me and I turned it off.
Harri me boy, that thumbnail is NOT GAY ENOUGH.
I'm looking for some improvement.
Not digging it. 🤷♀️ Next.
