All Jarreau is iconic. What he is doing with his voice is called scatting. Check out Ella Fitzgerald and others for this musical talent. May he rest in peace.
What he did was way beyond scatting. No other scatter, like Torme, could do what he did. Jarreau was best described as a "vocal gymnast". He stands alone, a total original
Young man you have stumbled into a musical wonderland that you shall never escape. After listening to Al your musical taste will be changed forever. That’s what happened to me back in the 70’s. Mr. (Ja-row short A sound) is the GOAT never to be forgotten. Bless his soul!
Mornin’ by Al Jarreau is STILL my favourite song to wake up to ❤️ this is old school scat. The jazz cats back in the day did this. Al Jarreau was a smooth brother and a beautiful soul. The world is less bright without him in it.
Excellent selection. Al was in his own lane. Too good to be forgotten. A national treasure. His catalog spans 40+ years....RIP Al along with George Benson, Michael Franks, Pat Metheny and Quincy Jones are my top 5 jazz artist.
REST IN Heaven Al Jarrau…. I know I miss him so much. My dad used to take me to his concerts every time he came to Minneapolis. When I saw his first concert I told my dad I want to tour like is Keyboardistj play eventually did. His music and his musicality I like none other.
Dave Brubeck wrote TAKE FIVE as instrumental. Mr. J put lyrics to it here and masterfully so. You've chosen some deep jazz to try. Try the Moonlighting theme for sure.
Yes, Dave Brubeck! I remember my parents playing "Take 5," matter of fact the whole album. My young introduction into jazz and I must admit, I liked a lot of those artists at that time. Nancy Wilson, Thelonius Monk, just to name a couple.
Congratulations young student of all things music! I've been waiting for you to experience this jazz legend 🥳🥳😍 Bobby McFerrin is another unique talent you would really enjoy. Love your always genuine sensitivity and reactions 💕 being a spiritual guy, you would love his song, "letter perfect" and "sweet tomorrow morning" 😊 he's the Harry Mack of jazz young brother.hes a human mockingbird - I saw him live and he made the sound of every instrument in the band😳😍🥳
I saw him live around 1980 or so in Ft. Lauderdale, FL at the Sunrise Musical Theater. He was totally incredible and blew me away. Such an amazing talent he was. I cried when he died.
Pronounced Al Ja ROW. He was my favorite when I was a little girl. I’m in my 40s and I still listen to him. He was my first concert. I was two years old. Bobby McFerrin also does scat.
Thank you so much for reacting to this musical genius! My favorite performer for sure. His concerts were always different and exciting. He had an entire band in his mouth. There will never be another like him.
What he is doing is called scatting in jazz, but he took it to another level. He did jazz albums, and he also had some other more radio friendly pop hits. But I always like his jazz the best. Two great songs from this album (everything on it is great) are Bust Out With the Dawn and Better Than Anything.
Roof Garden is my favorite song of his. If you want to hear the original Take Five, look up Dave Brubeck. Also there is an outstanding gospel a capela group called Take 6 that you might want to give a listen to.
Hi Tim! You are the best! First off, it's pronounced " Jah-row" Al Jarreau is a very unique lyricist. I have a few of his albums as he was hot in.the '80's. Please react to "Teach Me Tonight." He has a beautiful voice! In my AI Jarreau phase my kids would get a front row seat when I put him on the stereo.😂 Being kids he wasn't for them. I promise he sings this one soooo sweetly. Thanks Tim!
Try Kem's first single Love Calls. When it came out, his voice was familiar to Al Jarreau's. Al riffs and scats alot. This is jazz. The finest! Please listen to Rachelle Ferrell.
That album was pure 🔥 I went to that concert and I fell in love that night with Al and Ms. Phyllis Hyman. THE best concert I’ve ever been to. It was magical. You could hear a pin drop throughout the audience as Al entertained. And when the concert was over, we just sat silently there believing he would do an encore. They had to turn the lights on before we realized the concert was over. I saw him EVERY time he came to DC. Rest in Power Mr. Jarreau!
Al could only be described as a wonder. He was an energy force. It was as if he embodied music. He also played several instruments. Seeing him live you'd be transfixed because if you took your eyes off of him for a second you could miss something amazing. His last name is pronounced Jew-Ro. Check out is songs Spain, Compared to What, Distracted, Since I Fell for You, Morning, Roof Garden, Moonlighting...there are so many
SO many great songs by him. "SO GOOD" is a favorite. AFTER ALL, HEAVEN AND EARTH, and of course "WE'RE IN THIS LOVE TOGETHER". He was great in concert. Glad to see you review him.
Glad you have discovered Al Jarreau. Take Five is a jazz standard. From the same live album check out the song We Got By, it was the first Al Jarreau song I heard (way back in 1970's) been a fan ever since. Love you.
A Masterclass in the art of Scat...Al was a Legend who makes it look effortless. I have a CD buried somewhere with his performance of Take Five. Thanks for the throwback ❣💯
You gotta react to Al Jarreau's songs Morning, We're In This Love Together, All or Nothing At All, We Got By and some of his other stuff. He's such an iconic vocalist. There'll never be another like him.
Pronounced ja-'RO. That's jazz skatting voice technique popularized in the 40s. It was a way for vocalists to take a solo without words. Al would always emulate a horn or hit conga drums and other instruments vocally. Take 5 also refers to the count of the song i.e. 1-2-3-4-'5' ruclips.net/video/tGSUjuSBt1A/видео.html instead of 1-2-3-4. etc. Stay Kool, young Bro!
Sure glad music eventually showed up...some 3 minutes in! This is a version of the jazz classic Dave Brubeck, Take Five. Now that is one you should react to. Seriously. Donald 😎
Genius, scatt is a language all its own. try (Morning Mr. Radio) by Al J. it is so smooth. Also, Taste Ashford and Simpson, (It Seems To Hang On) and (Found A Cure) I promise you'll get up and dance. The 70's was an exceptional time for great across the board. Bless you
My favorites of Al’s are Tell me what I gotta do, and Roof Garden. To be able to scat like him is a true talent. I got to see him about a year before he passed away. I’m so grateful!
Thanks so much Tim for reacting to Al Jarreau (Ja-row) closest way to pronounce it. Definitely a favorite of mine. Maybe " Mornin" would be a good one it's a light and happy tune. And then there's "After All" and "We're in This Love Together". Which are more of a RB and jazz mix. I wonder have you ever done any reviews of beatboxing since you kind of like the scatting maybe you would like that. There's this guy King Inertia that I really like. I'll have to go and get the exact song and I'll add it to this comment. I haven't gotten too far into the beatboxing world because I don't want to fall down that rabbit🐇 hole got enough music I'm interested in already. ruclips.net/video/N2VaH262ROE/видео.html Okay one is called "Collard Greens" and you can find that on Inertia's channel. And the other one the one I put the link to which probably won't work it's called "It's Too Late" it's the video used for the competition between he and Helium. It's like a reply cuz Helium says "down with the King" and this is his reply to that. I like it because of all the bass Inertia does a lot of bass. Hopefully you can get to play it it's off of them Chezame's channel . On youtube. But I don't know if he has a copyright but in case it won't open it's called "It's Too Late" King Inertia versus Helium... Check it out...
You actually reacted to him before. He is part of Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World” video. He also does an amazing cover of Bill Withers Ain’t No Sunshine you might want to check out!
Al Jarreau is a vocal master and a Legend. He is a combination of Jazz, Pop and R&B. I'm glad you could appreciate the video. It sounds different to you because Jazz has not been in the mainstream for many decades, but it is part of the foundation of all Black Music and American Music. It saddens me that generations have no knowledge of Jazz, because it has such rich history. You were so focused because this isn't surface music. It has layers and depth. What he was doing is called "scatting". He was a master of that, as well as many other prominent Jazz Vocalists. I encourage you to learn more about Jazz. It is a part of our cultural history, and influenced many of the greatest vocalists of all time. RIP Mr. Jarreau. Long live Jazz.
Others have mentioned you would also enjoy Bobby McFerrin and I agree! Please consider something from his aptly titled album *Medicine Music* I'd recommend "Baby", "The Garden", and "The 23rd Psalm".
Al Jarreau makes this look so easy even though it is ridiculously difficult .Al Jarreau was one of a kind Thank you for reacting to this It was enjoyable watching your experience it.
Carmen McRae was the first singer to put lyrics to Take Five. The style is called vocalese. It’s when a songwriter writes a lyric for every note of the melody. Al was a true virtuoso of the technique and a classical vocalist as well.
Hey Tim, what he is doing with his voice is what jazz singers do freestyle, called "scatting". His last name is pronounced "Juh-row", and it's French, that's why it's spelled that way despite how it's pronounced. Check out the original "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck, who was part of the West Coast Jazz movement.
Try "(Round, Round, Round) Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Spain," "Breaking away" and "Roof Garden" by Al Jarreau. Also "Sleeping Gypsy" and "Love is like Monkey see and Monkey do" by Michael Franks.
Al Jarreau (sounds like "Jar-Oh") was a master of jazz and pop. He was an instrument within his self. I agree with all the suggestions below for more of his music. But look for Al Jarreau and Kurt Elling doing the same song (Take Five) acapella from the Legends of Jazz collection. Amazing!
I believe It is a freshier version of scatting, and a classy and swinging beatboxing
Young man you have stumbled into a musical wonderland that you shall never escape. After listening to Al your musical taste will be changed forever. That’s what happened to me back in the 70’s. Mr. (Ja-row short A sound) is the GOAT never to be forgotten. Bless his soul!
There was and always will be just ONE Al Jarreau
It’s riffing and scatting…love it!
Al Jarreau was a great vocalist. Miss him
There was NO ONE like Al Jarreau... His music will live forever♡

The original instrumental version is worth a listen just to hear what inspired the lyrics. Take 5 just to see that I’m alive.
Checkout the Moonlighting theme song!

To be fair, Paul Desmond (saxophonist in Brubeck’s band) wrote Take Five…

When I saw this artist on you channel couldn't wait to see your facial reaction. You did not disappoint 👏🙌👌😍🤣🤣🤣🤣💜
Congratulations. You have just graduated to a whole new level of music!
I've been wanting you guys to listen and comment on brother Al. He was truly a one of a kind beast

Your expression is similar to that of someone listening to rap music for the first time! I love your open mindedness!
That is my boy Al, Rip!!
If you like this, try George Benson's (Masquerade); He makes similar sounds but is more laid back in tone.
Al Jarreau and George Benson together jazz, it's called scatting
What he’s doing is called is riffs and scats in jazz. 🥰
Try "(Round, Round, Round) Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Spain," "Breaking away" and "Roof Garden" by Al Jarreau. Also "Sleeping Gypsy" and "Love is like Monkey see and Monkey do" by Michael Franks.
RIH AL J. His voice was an instrument... Many of them 👑♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Amazing!
