You got it 5/4 time, and in my layman opinion the greatest drum solo ever.

Drummer Joe Morello was, by the time this filmed, legally blind. If you watch his head (and on closeups, his eyes), he spends as much time looking away from his kit as he does at it. So, the extra thick lenses on his glasses were kind of a last ditch attempt to still see things, even though everything around him was probably just light and dark blurs/shapes.

Check out Dave Brubeck’s Time Out album, where the studio cut of this song originated. Every song on that album is in an odd time signature. Also Dave Brubeck Goes To College live double album 👌

"Take Five" was first recorded for the album "Time Out", an album that Brubeck dedicated to exploring various time signatures. My Dad, who was a jazz saxophonist in his younger years during the Swing Era nearly two decades before this was recorded, always admired the playing of Paul Desmond, calling his playing of the alto sax so "crisp" and "clean." Morello was later replaced with drummer Alan Dawson. A decade or so after this recording, the Dave Brubeck got his quartet together again to record a live concert, released as the album "We're All Together Again", featuring the quartet, with Brubeck, Desmond, Jack Six on bass, Alan Dawson on drums, plus Gerry Mulligan added on baritone sax. That is also a fabulous recording of "Take Five" with an epic Alan Dawson drum solo. From "Time Out," check out the tune "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Unsquare Dance".-

Here you go, Dave's quartet playing Blue Rondo a la Turk, live at the Playboy Mansion. That's A very young Hugh Hefner hosting his friends and Dave's group at his home. BTW it's in 9/8 time. Enjoy!

And the drummer wore a smart suit and a very nice tie! This cool jazz style and great quality fashion.

I usually do not judge people on their appearance. But boy these guys had style.

Looooove jazz. I was vocally trained in jazz, soooooooooo awesome! I love all genres of music, and have a special place in my heart for jazz. My father was both a microbiologist by day and in a jazz band at night, playing piano and drums. So, there was a big influence there.

Simply one of the best pieces of cool relaxing jazz that everyone can surely enjoy. Love the drum solo - the time given to just be free in the groove. 😎🔥✌️

And don't ignore the wonderful Eugene Wright on upright bas. And it was the sax player, Paul Desmond, who wrote this.

Great fun hearing your remark that maybe the drummer was the star of the piece while Dave had the solo and thinking to myself, "Man, just you wait ..."

Thank you, now I am aware of the name and band that I hear at least every other day, while on hold because of my 9-5 gig. It always gives me a holiday feel and yes, it does make me smile. Although, I've never heard it all the way through, they seem to repeat about that last two minutes of the tune ... this was neat! Thanks for sharing. 😊

I put this on hold music 20 years ago :)
Would have put some Miles but he scares people too much :)
Anyone looking for something to listen to try out one of my personal all time favorites - ellington at newport diminuendo and crescendo in blue

One of the best cool jazz tunes of all time. Dave is the guy on piano. Paul Desmond on sax. I think drummer Joe Morello and Dave use the same optometrist.

I got into jazz after buying Donald Fagen’s album The Nightfly when I was 13! Then, when I figured out he was half of Steely Dan, I went down that rabbit hole, too. ❤

If you like Joe Morello's drumming you could have a listen to "Castillian Drums" from the same concert.
