I am stunned this long version doesn't have MILLIONS of views ! They are missing out on some Beautiful sweet music. I'm playing it on a loop right now 😁🥁🎹🎺🎷🎶
Because of Dave Bruback and this song, I discovered Joe Morello, my favorite drummer on the world. In the 60's, I switched from rock to jazz drumming. Of all styles of music, I like jazz the most and of all the songs, this is my favorite. This is the first time I've heard this version and I love it, even though Joe isn't in it. Thank you, Dave Brubeck.
In 1953 I stopped at a small night club and Dave Brubeck with his small group were playing. When he got through playing Take Five that had been recently released the whole place stood and clapped for about 4 minutes. I was and still awed at him and the only version that should be played. Was at Sears Roebuck in LA....in late 50’s and wandered into record department and this piece was playing from original album. This 16 year old was blown away by this original sound ....my mother bought it for me ....although we couldn’t afford it....charged on Sears card ...over $20....a lot of bucks fir the time . Best money ever spent on me...listening ever since.....Dr, Albert Aguilera Long Beach Ca
I was introduced to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond some 60 years ago. That was at the 'Ambacht School in Hoorn in the Netherlands. Al my old friends where there like, Karel Schneider, Renee Bras, Dolf Boekel and so on, I still like to thank the teacher for playing this music to us. This music shaped my understanding of music and it's associating differences in approach and styles. Plying the guitar for many years it's amazing how much of this you take in and use without realizing it. Too Cool. Thank you my dear teacher!
I was first introduced to the DBQ in about 1979, when I heard "Time Out". The following year, I saw the quartet live at the Kool Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY. DBQ played there every year for more than 20 years, I saw them every time. I remember a clarinet rather than a sax a time or two, "just to try out the sound" as Mr. B told us. Always a fabulous set. Mulligan on the baritone contrasts Desmond's alto perfectly.
I was born the year this song was originally recorded and released. I grew up with and spent most of my early life listening to all the great rock of the 60's and 70's (less so of the 80's and 90's). I spend time listening to the defining songs and albums of that era and genre, read the comments and feel, quite sure, that yes, 'this is the greatest rock and stands the test of time'. Then I come and listen to this. And know that nothing ever recorded in the last century can compare. I started shifting to jazz in my late 20's when began feeling a need for more sophisticated mature music that wasn't shouting something at me all the time. Just music. The journey of discovery of great jazz has never ended. And when I need to feel that there is much that was right with humanity and its ultimate achievements, it is this that moves me and keeps me grounded. And I feel that as long as this music is alive, exists, gains new followers and those that can put in the work to come to truly deeply appreciate it, civilization will will be okay, it will survive.
Fantastic Jazz song heardbit when I was 15 and for some reason I enjoyed the beat of the sax the flute and the bassaa of course the piano ..now at 79 I still enjoy it !!!! Awesome tune !!!
Well, it appears that it took a Pandemic for the world to find , appreciate , creative phenomenal talent again. I noticed that the view skyrocketed in the past year !! I personally prefer this version as it gives each person their own time to shine ! That's respect ! The other versions did NOT have not even a million views. I noticed !! Now, they certainly do. This should have multi million views in my honest opinion, that is sadly their loss.
This guy is insane ! (also the Quartet, of course ;) ) Me and my friend were playing chess, while we were listening to this track and we didn't even notice the fact that they're playing live (well, I think it's also because of the good quality), and the crossovers from the improvisation back to the original notes are genius!! I take my hat off to those guys!
This version of Take Five is the perfect background music for taking time to polish shoes and boots. Best prescription for attaining peace and order! Life now shines as do footwear! Tempo matches brush strokes to the beat!
All my life long Brubek's "Take Five" goes by my side, bringing my mood back lmmldiately with the very first sounds, no matter what wrong was with me. I've had heard it for the first time ln Tbilisi - city, soviet Georgia, ln about 1970, when I was ten, on wondeful soviet LP vinyl record in a beautiful sleeve. What can I say... I was shocked. And this shock is getting stronger and deeper.
I listened to this drum breakout for the first time at sunrise after an early morning drive to drop my (drummer) brother off at the airport in Denver. Heaven on earth. Our VFW Band plays this piece. I play flute melody. But that drum solo at sunrise…… can’t be beat. No pun intended.
We've listened to this in music lesson and since then it doesn't get out of my head anymore, the smooth relaxing and calm melody and extraordinary beat is absolutely stunning.
Been a fan of this guy since i heard this song in the 1981 adult animated cult classic American Pop when i was 11 back in 93 on Cinemax and loved the movie with the soundtrack, that movie made me a fan of him.
from my undestanding brubeck was inspired by the asian rhythmic use in their music, so he applied it to the album "time out". desmond thought of the main line but couldnt form a proper song out of it, until brubeck suggested the aaba form would work. morello played a huge role in the 5/4 swing and his signature take five drum solo. correct me if im wrong im curious.
The Best of good liking the Jazz 👍😊😁 is with out any doubt!!!!***Dave Brubeck Quartet, I have loved him for years but the 1st time hearing his quartet or band.

I love the "twos" Dave trades off with Alan, and at the beginning of Alan's solo, he references (if not "quotes") a small portion of Joe Morello's famous original solo.
im a drummer and am still, always wondering what , how the drummer was "thinking'' through this. amazing. and Im into frank zappa!..cheers&aloha to all...and ..."make a jazz noise here!.." F.Z. ;)

Take Five was not recorded until 1959.

This is the best jazz piece ever written, and the Brubeck version is the one and only standard.
+Cristian Micu Many thanks for the background information on this work of art. Much appreciated!
Agreed! As for me, I like the drums so much
Cristian Micu it was written in 1956.
The longest version of Take 5 is about 45 minutes r so long, performed in Europe, a few years before Dave Brubeck died. A Masterpiece. Forever.
Do you have more references for this one ? :)
This is one of the most complete, soulful, rhythmic jazz pieces ever conceived. Can't stop listening to it. The Brubeck band really went Beast Mode!

Wow what a great rendition to the all time classic jazz creation of the master ! The one and only, Mr. Paul Desmond. Incomparable talent !

Take 5 was actually composed by Paul Desmond.
he came up with an outline, Brubeck spent much time building it up
And it was inspired by Joe Morello.

Great to hear the sax part played in two pieces. I don't have the liner notes, but I am guessing alto and bari, since both are e flat.
definitely baritone and alto now that i am 5 minutes into it
