Fun video. I've never seen the corner cut method before. For some reason I actually find pattern assembly really relaxing lol.
I cut a stack of like 10 sheets at once with my rotary cutter, I usually cut off the right side and the top edge, then I tape. Much faster to bulk cut than each page at a time. I just use the same rotary cutter for paper as for fabric.
Thank you for a great tip! I had never even thought that was possible, but what a time saver, the cutting really takes up a lot of time. Especially with scissors
The same scissors for paper and fabric?!?! My mother-in-law would never let me do that! I’d have to buy another rotary cutter.
I don't cut any of the paper away, I put the sheets on a lightbox and tape, my lightbox is just an A4 one, very cheap but makes life so much easier
Congratulations on your new sewing pattern Johanna!
I’ve tried and prefer method 2. Cutting with my Dahle rotary trimmer but also like a steel rule and scalpel.
Positioning with glue sticks but fix to secure with tape. This works best for big pattern pieces, especially when the sections are handled often. Less risk of them coming apart.
I love your videos, always a fresh approach. But i just wanted to mention that your commentary is getting a little fast. For those with less than good hearing I fear some of what you are saying might be hard to understand. But keep up the good work.
Thank you for your feedback! I think it's getting faster as my ability to formulate English words improves and I'm a fast talker in Swedish 😊. But I'll keep this in mind!
You always have the option of slowing the video down if that would be helpful
I use the before mentioned Fiskars paper trimmer, it changed my PDF pattern game ;-) It's easy, accurate and fast. And I rarely tape all pages together, only what is needed to get a complete pattern piece so I don't end up with trying to fold 50 pages to the size of a letter....
I use a straight cutter which is fast. But I'm going to try the cutting corners. thank you for the experiment.
I also use a paper cutter (my husband got it for free from the trash pile when his office was moving!). I like this method for storing patterns. They fold up easily and I store them in a zip lock bag.
I use the heavy duty paper cutter at my work to cut 2 edges off each page. I bring in the printed patterns and chop/trim them on my lunch break. I'll bring in a few patterns and do them all in one break. After a few pages of a pattern I can get the alignment down and then trim several pages at a time. It's so fast!
I also have a home paper cutter but it is not a super expensive one so I can only do one page at a time, but it still does a much better job at trimming than scissor cutting, and is still so much faster.
Interesting experiment! I always use the folding method! I tried the corner method recently but also found the rows a bit hard & with lots if pages it was trickier to keep track of which corners to cut. I’m going to stick to folding & glue
Great test! But I wonder, when cutting the corners on the diagonal, don't you get into trouble with seeing all of the pattern? There must be a strip of paper covering the printed lines? As you can guess, I've never tried this method.... no. 2 is my favourite 😊
yes you are correct, the paper overlap which I forgot to mention in the video, 9 times out of 10 it's not an issue I would argue since you can see the ink through the paper, but it can be an issue in some instances I'm sure
I have used method 2, it’s my favorite. I have also tried both glue and tape. Loved the ease of the glue method, but have found it didn’t hold up and I have had to tape over the glued areas. Love your videos!
Thank you! And yes some glue stick have no longevity which is a major drawback
I’ve only ever used method number 2 but am looking forward to trying cut corners only (no 3). Another great video. Thank you!!!
Yes it was much easier to cut too, I still find those long straight lines hard!
Great video :) I've never done this before, to me the second version looks easiest and best!
As much as I hate to admit.. I do prefer tape over glue. When I’m done with the pattern and want to fold it up and store it for later use, I find that the glue isn’t as strong as tape. Maybe it’s the glue brand I’m using, but tape is my go-to at the moment.
That is a good! I too wonder if there is glue with better longevity, as I've had the same experience as you. Too bad, because all that tape doesn't feel good
I use UHU glue stick. It is not expensive and widely available in Germany but I dont know about other countries. It sticks paper on paper super secure. It is impossible to take the pieces apart after a minute or so.
I prefer the tape for the same reasons as Coutthelaps.
I use 2 sides paper scissors but can easily do 4 sheets at a time. Small amounts of tape. I just put on a vlog podcast or telly programme and enjoy it. Will often do this in batches. Used to use a sliding guillotine.
Hmm, I like the corner cutting method idea as I get fed up using the cut two sides method (and sore fingers) especially with large patterns. Thank you. Great tips as usual.
Thank you 😊
My issue is not the glueing, or the cutting, it the laying it out in order. Some times it's very confusing and that's what takes the longest time for me. I will usually spewing for the PDF Plotting service.
Thank you so much for this resource!! I still don't quite understand method #3 cutting corners only. It seems that pattern lines are obscured or not visible for cutting around? I guess I need to replay this video :) Maybe I will test on small pdf pattern and see. I like #2 and #4 (except for the bulk) Where possible I rather send off to copy shop, if file available. Thank you so much! Excellent suggestions!
I prefer the paper cutters that slide instead of chop.
I agree I used to slide one for years and then bought a pricey chopping one thinking it would be better and it's not. It's hard to be precise with the chopping one
Straight lines like these I cut with my rotary cutter and an old blade - quick and precise
What an awesome idea! Do you use a separate paper cutter or do you use the same blade for fabric?
@@Thelaststitch a blade that is no longer fit to use on fabric.
i use method 2 with tapr but I cut using a metal ruler and a box cutter. I have an old board i use to cut on. Quicker and more accurate for me.
I use method 2 with glue stick. I tried using tape but I prefer the glue stick. It is faster and more secure. I use UHU and it never comes apart! It sticks so well together that it is not easy to adjust once you put the pieces together (thats the only downside).
I will definetely try the corner cutting method next time.
I'm buying the UHU this week 👍
I use DST to glue the sheets
Hello Johanna! I always cut two sides and tape...I use to use a glue stick but they ran out faster and didn’t hold for the duration of the pattern. (At least mine didn’t!). It goes by pretty fast!
I wonder if there is some super glue stick with better duration? Mine also tends to fall apart with use, but tape makes the pattern bulkier too. I will switch to the corner method now and see if I can less tape at least
The Last Stitch Please let us know if that works for you!
Great video! has anyone used an A4 lightbox? Pros and Cons? is it easier then other methods? it seems like it would be much quicker! Great video! I am new to the PDF pattern community, so I am testing the waters right now before I even start sewing! :)
I am so intimidated to print my first pattern. I will be doing this week. It might take me a lot longer 😬
I'm cheering you on! It can be a bit overwhelming at first with all the pages, but once you figure out the system and your preferred process it will be easy!
I use a paper cutter and cut 5 or 6 pages at the same time.
If you want to cut edges off, use a rotary knife and ruler. Fast and accurate. Surely a glue stick container is made from a lot of plastic ?
Great tips thank you! My reasoning around the tape va glue is that the glue stick can be recycled as plastic whereas taped paper makes recycling trickier, but I'm no expert on that topic
I use a portable guillotine/slider cutter that I bought at Costco (in Canada) yrs ago. Fiskars or other big brand-I'm not home to check. Big time saver as it handles multiple pages. I cut two sides and use tape but will try glue. Someone mentioned glue not being robust enough--I think I would just reinforce a few spots as needed. It amazes me how much of the taped areas end up in my recycle anyways. Love your vlog BTW!!!! I find it a no nonsense channel for real home sewers. I have a question--would you not have to cut away areas of the overlap on your corner only method? Otherwise you'd have missed the continuity of the pattern lines.
Thank you for your input, I'll look into getting a cutter too. And you are correct regarding the corner, which I forgot to mention. The person who showed me the method noted that it's usually easy to see those markings anyways through the paper, and I agree with her for the most part. And thank you for your kind words about my channel, my intention has always been to keep it real, informative, and not fluffy, while hopefully also entertaining at the same time
Cutting corners will only work if the pdf pattern has the guidelines around the edge. Not all do, especially those that have layers. I generally cut one side, then cut all the way along the bottom of the four pieces before taping the next four pieces. I try to avoid using patterns that are only A4. Much easier to get an A0 printed at the copy shop!
I’ve always cut 2 sides and sellotape, never knew about other methods, storing them I have to buy A4 folders as they are so bulky .
I think the 2 side methods is the most common and the ones I have used the most too, But since the assembly process kinda cumbersome I think many sewists are always trying to figure out a better and faster way, and I'm sure there are methods out there too!
I will try the corners one next .
Sun pillow
I use a paper cutter (guillotine I think it’s called lol) I cut about 10 at a time the use UHU liquid glue stick from Amazon. Both I got on Amazon. I tried a glue stick and tape and it took too long lol. xx

Cellotape (originally a contraction of cellophane-tape that is now trade marked) is made from cellophane, a plant derived material. Sellotape is a brand name and according to wikipedia their tapes are polypropylene-based. Of course there are paper tapes that you could also use. And here's a link to a supplier - also available via Amazon: www.nichiban.com/products/stationery/cellotape/
Very interesting video, thank you.
Why can’t the designers rather use AO format. I far prefer it, or give the option. I only want to buy AO format. Especially with age ones eyes are not the same.
Many do, but many people don't have an A0 printer at home, and a large draw for these patterns is instant gratification.
