An important thing is do not ignore darts when you are making a pattern. Measure how wide the dart is, double it, and add that width to the pattern. On another channel I saw someone make a pattern from a fitted skirt but they ignored the darts in the skirt and just traced around the edges, so the front and back of their home-made skirt was totally flat and had no shaping to fit a 3-D human body. If the fabric has no stretch, you need those darts to make a flat fabric conform to your body curves.

What side to trace patterns on with the fabric. I made pants and cut pockets but they weren't all facing the design side of the fabric and I couldn't tell from the pattern (Simplicity) if I was doing it right. I also mistakenly cut off too much fabric from my pattern pieces because I thought the pieces were supposed to line up, resulting in. Very tight fit at ths hip and waist. Then I realized that the size I wear off the rack doesn't necessarily match the various pattern sizes so I have to make sure each piece fits. You can turn regular jeans into pregnancy jeans by replacing the zipper area with an elastic band. There are tutorials for it on RUclips. Dresses were also my friend because you can get a cute flowy/stretchy dress and it will look good for most if not all of your pregnancy. Also, some thrift stores (like value village) will often have a maternity section. The clothes are usually in awesome shape since they weren't worn that much and a fraction of the price! I hope this helps and congratulations! My little man is 7 months old and it is an amazing adventure. 😊

Really awesome April, you made the thought of making my own patterns a lot less scary. Looking forward to the next one. I have one suggestion: All of the pre-made patterns that I have ever used use 2 notches/marks to indicate the back and 1 notch/mark indicate the front. I use a lot of pre-made patterns and I think that keeping this standard for self-made patterns would deter possible mix-ups down the road, especially if someone is already a pre-made pattern user and is venturing into the self-made pattern world. Just a thought.
Hi my dear, this is on of the best most simple videos I have ever have the pleasure of watching. The best part is I actually ( UNDERSTAND IT , VERY WELL), 👍 .

Oh my god, I watched your video after trying twice for my pants already - self-made pattern and failing. I switched back and forth between skirt and pants (cosplay project) and was getting kinda desperate when I found your video. It helped so so so much! They fit! They finally fit.
Oh my god. It's an AMAZING tutorial. You are great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I was thinking of making patterns for months now. The video gave me a lot of great tips.
hi Coolirpa! great video, thanks. If you have time for another video, I would really appreciate to see how can we trace a pattern from a shirt, dress, top, that has darts. I try it two time from very simple clothes that I have, but without a good result. Thanks in advance!!
I’ve always wanted to learn how to make patterns from scratch to make that perfect clothing item that you just can’t find in a store. Creating a sleeve pattern is particularly daunting for me. Specifically getting the sleeve to fit the shape of the bodice. I would love to see videos on how to make patterns from scratch, and done so in a slow and clear way so I can wrap my mind around it 😅
Pattern-making for fashion design by Helen Joseph Armstrong is a good book if you are looking for one. It's a bit pricey but it's what we used in fashion school and it's relatively comprehensive. If you have a dress form I can recommended a draping book also... Draping for fashion design by Hilda Jaffe and Nurie Relis. 😊
Buying clothes has become so frustrating- I have _one_ favorite pair of jeans that fit perfectly, so I’m going to make a pattern out of it and make more jeans that fit in the same way. Thank you for making this video.

Jennifer Xiong don’t say that, I always thought it would be too hard and watched all her videos just for fun, but in April last year I got a sewing machine and without any experience I started learning it and so far already made a skirt, some pants and lots of little stuff. It’s really not that hard, you should try!
You are great! I learn something new whenever I watch you. This is way off your normal topics. I have a paralyzed dog and I'm trying to construct a diaper keeper that actually works for him and to make it more durable. Was wondering if you might be able to offer advice or even make a video. I've bought some but they wear out quickly and I'm not having luck trying to make a pattern.
I don't even use paper. I simply lay the garment on the fabric, and cut. I use a half inch seam allowance. I recently made a coral long sleeve ribbed hoodie. It's the first thing, I have made from scratch in years. I looked up some tips for sewing stretch fabrics. Even though I have been sewing for years, I have still learned a lot from your videos. Thank you, for all that you do.
I got a sewing machine for xmas a few years ago along with some ditsy print fabric for a skirt. Every year since I say I'm going to make it but never do, maybe this year will be that year. Also the tracing pattern idea seems far more easier than making my own like I attempted to do last summer and fell out with it 🙄
If you have a hard time tracing the armhole with the tracing wheel, place the garment on top of a cork mat or some cardboard covered with patern paper according to the instructions. Then use pins to mark it. Do the same with the top of the sleeve. You will clearly see the markings on the patern paper without having to move any of the garment.
I found this very valuable, thank you! Regarding the shorts, can you show how to create the pattern piece and construct the front area where a zipper and button would go?
I would love it if you would make a video where you make a piece of clothing in different sizes (like size 2,6,14 for instance) of the same fabric and then show how /if patterns are different and if there are any differences or struggles how to compensate / overcome them. I'm more on the bigger side myself and most people who are sewing on youtube are on the smaller side. So that would be interesting for me! :)
I would really love to see a video on how to use a mannequin to draft patterns! :) Since I'm quite tall, my (adjustble) dressing form does not match with my measurements and draping is quite hard that way.
@@FannysLoA Yes I have, but I think you can't really pin fabric onto them? And I was mainly wondering whether there is a way to use a non-perfect mannequin to make clothes for yourself :)

Karla Ramos Soto if it’s a skirt or waist gather, I normally look at what the bottom (or non gather part) shape is like and will just copy that measurement, or add a bunch of seam allowance as much as you think will equal the gathers. You can gather a scrap fabric and see how much is gathered to equal the item your tracing too! This sounds confusing but hope it makes sense :)
If it has gathers on it you don't need to trace the gathered part... Just measure the part that is not gathered and mimick the shape of that line (the non gathered side) the ratio for gathering lightweight fabric is usually three or four to 1.
@@karlaramossoto1808 ooof sleeve patterns with gather are almost impossible to trace without taking apart the pattern itself. you can measure along the seam line and try to get your pattern line to match that and make your sleeve and armhole shape match for the u gathered parts. make a mark where they match. The good thing about gathered sleeves though... Although the shape may be hard to get accurate at the top as long as the left and the right side both have the same amount of gather they should at least look consistent to each other even if they don't match your inspiration garment exactly. But the 3 or 4 to 1 ratio doesn't necessarily apply to sleeves because it depends on the amount of gather that you want. I hopethat helps and makes sense
you FORGOT ONE THING - if the pattern you make is from a "stretch" piece of clothing then the pattern will be for sewing only stretch clothing - I caused myself some grief when I made a pattern out of a pair of stretch pants and then sewed them in cotton - but you might cover that in the next video - THANKS FOR THE TIPS, you brought up some things I forgot lol
Definitely a good point- and the fabric for the new garment should have the same amount of stretchiness as the old one. Not all stretch fabrics stretch the same amount. To measure stretchiness, , hold a folded piece of the garment with both hands. position your hands like 3 inches apart. and pull your hands apart to stretch and see how far it stretches. If it stretches out to 6 inches, then that is what you need to look for in your new fabric. If a 3 inch section of the new fabric only stretches to 4 inches (such as stretch denim), it won't be stretchy enough for that pattern. And be sure to lay out the pattern with the fabric stretch going across the garment, (side to side) not lengthwise.
TheHeffinator Yep. Totally, it’s thin enough to pin through but no so thin that it tears (which was a problem I found with wrapping paper) I live in the UK and found a store that sells the 10m rolls for something like 80p (I guess about a dollar?). I’m such a Cheapskate LOL.

I used your tips to make a pattern from my favorite top, thank you!!! Judy
Judy Chapman yay! Glad to hear it!
Please show how to trace a pattern from a top that has bust darts. I can’t find a good video on it anywhere. Thank you💕
My bust darts always come out at the wrong place.... ugh.
I've only done this once, when my daughter was very young. I took a pair of her knit shorts, traced them and made that the inner part of a skort.
You are a lifesaver, i had never been able to get it right before but now maybe i actually have a chance. Thank you so much!
I was really nervous about sewing for the first time because I dont have any patterns to practice on and I've never done it before. I never thought of just creating patterns from my favorite clothes. This is so helpful!
So glad I found you. The other sites were so complicated!!!! This is what I had in mind in making my own pattern from my clothes!!!
hi Coolirpa! great video, thanks. If you have time for another video, I would really appreciate to see how can we trace a pattern from a shirt, dress, top, that has darts. I try it two time from very simple clothes that I have, but without a good result. Thanks in advance!!
Yes! A lot of my favorite clothes has darts.
Kindred Closets thank you so much!!
Search silhouette patterns sleeves on RUclips. The explanation is perfect
Buying clothes has become so frustrating- I have _one_ favorite pair of jeans that fit perfectly, so I’m going to make a pattern out of it and make more jeans that fit in the same way. Thank you for making this video.
GAHHH!!! THANK GOD~! Ive been looking for EXACTLY this VERY thing! Im a plus gal and need to make my own clothes from awesome stuff I have as patterns!! SO GLAD I FOUND YOU! Blessings to you from the Great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood Washington! (think south of Seattle and wayyyyyyyy better!! )
Am I blind? I can't find the second video you mentioned about making samples. XD This was super helpful!
Darn it! Murphey's law. Needed this tutorial five days ago when I was tracing some shorts, to make a pair. Oh well, wasnt too far off and the shorts turned out pretty good! Will enjiy watching more of these :)
You make this look sooo easy😭😭
But I'm still gonna try it, I now have a boost confidence watching this. 😊😊😊😊
I love your teaching skills.
This was so incredibly helpful! I’ve been trying to make a sweater and somehow got incredibly lost and it is not pretty! So this helped soo much💞
That’s awesome! Thank you for being so detailed with your videos. I got my dress form today. I will attempt to make my 10yr wedding anniversary dress 😱 I just need to learn to embroider flowers lol, everything else is just different parts of different videos you’ve uploaded 😊
I was at Joann fabrics yesterday pattern shopping. Being a size 22 24 plus, I found nothing suitable. I stumbled upon your video. 🙏thank you. Iam so happy now diy patterns education
My new years resolution is to make a dress for myself from scratch! I have never done it before so this video comes at the perfect time! Thanks April :D
That was what I have been looking for something simple but not overly complicated. I can’t work for the next tutorial. Thank you 🙏
Invaluable info! Been stuck on how to fix tracing the back crotch seam forever!! Thank you!
Awesome tips, always great learning different ways to create a pattern. I love patternmaking ❤🤗
I saw some of those videos because I want to do that, but yours is by far the best. Your explaination is great, you show exactily which seam is the right one and you show it on diffrent clothes. Now I know how to do that. I'm so excited to see the next part.
I love all of your videos, I watched them all. Happy new year :)
Finally something actually informative!!! Thank you SOOOOOO MUCHHH!!!!!!!😭🖤
My grandma would do this differently. She would take the original outfit that fit the person perfectly and then remove all the stitchings and used all the individual pieces to make her new sewing patterns to make all of her copycat outfits.
April- I just found your page and I’m LOVING ur helpful, amazing content!!
I know it’s been a while since you made this video, but I would REALLY be interested in what comes NEXT…
Once you make your mock up from your home made pieces but now it doesn’t quite fit right… please can you show us how to make the right adjustments so it will fit perfectly!!
That would be SOO helpful!!
Thank you so much! ❤ keep up the great content! 😍😃
Wish I’d seen this earlier, spent all day drafting disasters! Thanks for all the brilliant advice and easy to follow tips
Thank you so so much for this video!! ❤️ I really appreciate all the extra little tips and tricks !
April, you are so amazing! I’m never gonna make my own clothing because I just can’t lol. But I looooove watching all your tutorials and living through your videos lol. 💕💕
Jennifer Xiong don’t say that, I always thought it would be too hard and watched all her videos just for fun, but in April last year I got a sewing machine and without any experience I started learning it and so far already made a skirt, some pants and lots of little stuff. It’s really not that hard, you should try!
I loved this video! Thank you for sharing! Have you uploaded the part 2 of this video? I can't seem to find it if you have. Please help!
The part @ 10:04, thank u! Making a peplum top with sleeves. Watched this video and the peplum top one to help me out.
Thanks for such an easy to follow tutorial. I have several books that tell me the same information but seeing how to do it was much more helpful.
Finally you’re making a video like this 🥺💞 All of the other ones on youtube are so hard to understand lmao
haven't watched it but this tutorial is so helpful! can't wait to use it
I've been following you for years and I always enjoy your tutorials so much, I feel like I've learned so much. Thank you April!
I got a sewing machine for xmas a few years ago along with some ditsy print fabric for a skirt. Every year since I say I'm going to make it but never do, maybe this year will be that year. Also the tracing pattern idea seems far more easier than making my own like I attempted to do last summer and fell out with it 🙄
Where is Part #2 where you show how to make samples? I can't find it! Love this video!
I’m looking for part 2 too
When you find it let me know
You are so amazing. This really saves me from having to buy another pair of my favorite shorts just to rip them apart. Thank you so much!
Girl you are KILLING IT!
This video is super useful to me, please make this kind of video more😁😁 thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This was perfect. Thank you so much for explaining in detail and simple
I would really love to see a video on how to use a mannequin to draft patterns! :) Since I'm quite tall, my (adjustble) dressing form does not match with my measurements and draping is quite hard that way.
Have you seen the "make your own mannequin"-videos?
Basically cover yourself in duct tape, and you will have something that's a perfect match for you.
@@FannysLoA Yes I have, but I think you can't really pin fabric onto them? And I was mainly wondering whether there is a way to use a non-perfect mannequin to make clothes for yourself :)
@@lissegoris1276 Apparently you can if you fill it with the right material?
It may not be perfect, but at least better than the standard mannequins out there?
@@FannysLoA I have an old "adjustable" form. I don't recommend using them in their adjustability but I passed mine out with batting and covered it with a tight t-shirt, and reapplied the princess lines with very thin twill tape.
@@lissegoris1276 you can use the tape form as a mold and fill it with expanding foam and then remove the tape and it will be more accurate and you can pin fabric to it
This video was perfect for me since I was NOT in the mood to drape today ! 😊
Happy Hmong New Year!!! Hopefully, your Hmong New Year's was awesome and wonderful!!! I hope you reach 3 million subscribers in 2020. Love this video!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Great tutorial!! But I have a question, how would you trace something that has gathers on it?
Karla Ramos Soto if it’s a skirt or waist gather, I normally look at what the bottom (or non gather part) shape is like and will just copy that measurement, or add a bunch of seam allowance as much as you think will equal the gathers. You can gather a scrap fabric and see how much is gathered to equal the item your tracing too! This sounds confusing but hope it makes sense :)
coolirpa thank you for replying!! It does make sense. But what about for example gathers on the shoulder part of a sleeve?
Kindred Closets thank youuu sooooo muchhh!! This will help me a lot!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
you FORGOT ONE THING - if the pattern you make is from a "stretch" piece of clothing then the pattern will be for sewing only stretch clothing - I caused myself some grief when I made a pattern out of a pair of stretch pants and then sewed them in cotton - but you might cover that in the next video - THANKS FOR THE TIPS, you brought up some things I forgot lol
I've been planning to copy some shorts for a while so this is so timely!
Omgg first vid that i watch from u was the bucket hats and now that i subscribed.. im loving ur whole Content here!!!💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕✨💕
Anyone else literally use baking paper 😂
TheHeffinator Yep. Totally, it’s thin enough to pin through but no so thin that it tears (which was a problem I found with wrapping paper)
I live in the UK and found a store that sells the 10m rolls for something like 80p (I guess about a dollar?).
I’m such a Cheapskate LOL.
Yes the parchment paper with the grid is good.
I use packing paper.
That works, i just googled how much the alphanumeric paper costs and i'm 💀
I purchased a roll of medical paper on amazon and it works great! Just like white pattern paper, you can see through it!
Okay, first: thank you for the video!!! But also, your makeup looks so pretty 😍
I do this all the time. Thanks for the diy😻. Happy New Year from WV🇺🇸
This is so incredibly helpful!! Maybe make it a series? 😅 If you have time and it’s something that could help us beginners lol
I been doing a few things wrong then lol This was helpful thankyou Coolirpa!
Yay!! I've been waiting on this one! Very concise and clear steps! Looking forward to the series.
Hi April, Great idea!!! I have done this to make pajama shorts for my daughter who will be in her last semester of college!!!! It worked out great. I know this tutorial will be so helpful for so many people! I can't wait to see your next video! Take care and God Bless.
Great video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your instructions are excellent.😊
Thank you so much for sharing!. It's so helpful for me to start having an idea of what sewing is like. It's a big help. Thank you so much!. 👌👍👏🙏💖💐
I've been waiting so long for this! SO HELPFUL!!

I'm a newbie but you made it look super easy! thank you
