My wife used to have the belief that men grew beards out of laziness. She now understands that is definitely not true if you want it to look good. She was raised in the foot hills of the Appalachian mountains, where most men had long beards and never heard of beard oil. The longer my beard gets, the earlier I need to get up in the morning to make sure it is sufficiently nourished and looks good for the day. Having a nice beard takes alot more effort and money than just shaving every day...
@68dtrazz Well said, I totally agree and find myself getting up earlier to take care of the Man Mane. I don’t mind the effort I put it into it either. Like @DanCBearded said. “The bigger the Beard the bigger Billboard” and my billboard needs to be on point always. 👊🏻
My girlfriend encouraged me to grow a beard and she bought me beard oil and beard wash. I've been caring for my beard daily. I've been growing it for almost two years now.
100% agree. The longer it gets, the more time I spend in preparation. I'm at 15" in 2 years, and I can definitely say the longer my beard gets, the more products it requires and the better it looks. I have also noticed that most guys keep their beards short. I understand that not all men have genetics or the desire for a long beard, as it does have it challenges, but you are right when a long beard enters people notice. Thanks, Dan. I have learned a great deal from your videos and have informed others to tune in. Keep up the good work!
As a big beard grower myself I can attest to yes with absolute certainty my bear needs more attention and care. Without getting into the fundamentals of beard care, the individual himself must be educated in this area and have the patience, time and labor of love for the beard to grow out with confidence and understand expectations in himself and not to compare to others. And to understand that time and length fixes just about all beard problems. The most important guide to growing a big beard is this....." You cannot trim your way to a big beard" the first part of beard education.
i'm with dan, if you're committed to the long beard, why wouldn't you want to take great care of it. Cleaning and nourishing and grooming my long beard has become one of my favorite daily events. It really is a time i set apart for myself to enjoy, and i get rewarded for it each time i have a solid good beard day and get to just appreciate what i've been working toward for so long.
Agreed and as you know when it’s long, it’s a work in progress all day everyday. Also it teaches me to be more patience, acceptance and to exercised my inner and outer persistence… one again
Dan, Spot on!! When I was younger and started growing the beard back in 1985 there was no such thing as beard oil that I knew of. I kept my beard on the short side for many years and tried to grow it out but kept running into a bad case of itchy beardruff. It wasn’t until about 2010 when I discovered beard care products and techniques to take care of the beard. It changed the beard game totally! I was able to start to grow it out without the annoying beard itch and beardruff and also achieved considerable length also. I thank you Dan for you and this channel that has helped educate me in my beard journey.
Makes complete sense to me Dan! Oil products externally along with the ever important internal healthcare! Hydration, nutrition, stressors and quality rest are given importance areas!
More maintenance and upkeep for sure! I think longer it get the more water intake plays an impact on feel of beard etc. imo you can get away with not styling as much with a shorter beard than a longer one totally agree!!!🍻🍻🍻
I agree completely, the longer the beard the more consistent you should be with maintenance. On a side note I'm at three inches and just started taking biotin over the weekend I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
Having had both, I agree. the medium to long beard takes much more work. Keeping it short, I no longer need to blow dry it and use a heated brush. I don't really need conditioner or butter either. All I do now is use some oil and a little balm to keep down some of the stragglers that pop out on the sides.
I fully agree with this approach. For me, I treat my beard like the length, look, and style that I am aiming for. Kinda dress for the Job I want and not the one I have. But it's also about balance. Hydration, vitamins, thick and thin oils, stripping and gentle washes, and appropriate Conditioning. Once you are dialed in, it's very easy to gauge what you need at your length. A little more oil, butter, or balm. And the key for me is that I complete the care of my beard with the proper care for my head hair. I am sure some of those who are bald as well.
Great video Dan! I agree that longer beards need more care and attention. A good daily beard wash and beard oil are essential. Conditioner and beard butter are very helpful too. Oh and a good quality comb!
I would think that once your beard reaches a certain point whether six inches or two feet, beard care is just as important. While my beard is not as long as yours. I follow the same guidelines that you do. I just don't have the same volume. As always. Thanks for your guidance Dan.
I agree and what’s funny to me is just how many people I’ve personally met that don’t realize just how much work having a beard is. Great video as always!
Bingo! I'm in a very awkward beard phase right now. My main goal is to feel awesome with a beard, but I also want to represent the well groomed, bearded men out there. I want to give us a good name.
I love your informational and entertaining videos and watch almost every one of them. One thing I think would be greatly beneficial would be to specify which things are less important to shorter beards, such as last where you mentioned that 1) beard oil viscosity is less important for shorter beards (if I recall your answer to a halftime question during last week's BAL); but 2) thinner viscocity tends to work better once beards hit the longer lengths. It took me time to realize that my 3" and under beard didn't warrant conditioner or beard butter, as I took all guidance as it must be applicable to me, but I think your core demographic skews toward those with longer beards, so such guidance may be more for their use-case.
💯‼️ Whole heartedly agree. I’ve had to up my game as my beard has grown longer, at about 6” at almost the 10 month mark. I have a good buddy named Jeff, he owns a small beard oil company in Utah, and I’ve seen how much care he puts into his beard! Of course if you’re going to sell product you better have a good beard and at its longest 42”, I don’t believe his beard believes in terminal growth 😂, he’s got the most amazing beard I’ve ever seen.
I was not ware that there was much work in taking care of a beard. I’ve been watching and learning how to take care my beard for three months now. Beard is at the 9” area and looking great! Thanks bro…
I just started growing my beard this year and it’s coming in nicely. I am growing a beard because I want to portray Santa Claus in December my first time growing a beard and it’s definitely a project I have to use beard wash, conditioner, beard, oil, and beard, butter, as well as comb and brush my hair out on my beard daily to keep it in good condition when I go outsidepeople see me with my big 6 inch gray beard and they identify me a Santa Claus immediately so I have to take well care of my beard and as I’m gonna grow it without trimming for quite a while my guess is it’s going to get much longer than it is now I love your videos and you are a very informative guy. Thank you.
I agree, I sleep on my belly so it's a mess when I get up. Also ride my Harley if I don't tie it up or wear a gator it blows in my eyes and can't see. It is alot of work. But it's worth it. And my Ol'lady loves it.
I'm glad you made this video, something you brought up during last command's corner stream was about "returning" subscribers how they start growing a beard and "go hard" with videos and products and then the beard grows and people start to fade away. This is me, I found you from scuba when you were first getting going around 2018. Since then I figured my beard was good, but now its kind of been stuck at its (medium?) length. I stopped using oil and was only relying on butter since it made my beard feel good and co-washing instead of shampooing, but i wasn't getting any more length. WHY? because I stopped caring for it as much as i used to when it was short! ANYWAY, all of this to say, thank you for always doing videos, and thank you for doing the live streams. YOUR BOY IS BACK, I'm using oil again, keeping up with LCW every day, conditioning, taking a good multi-vitamin, staying hydrated, and planning on getting a longer beard this year. If not you know you'll been getting a beardadviceLIVE email lol. Positive vibes brother!
I used to have a longer beard. But due to work, I had to trim down. I honestly enjoy the short to medium beard now. I dont spend too much time styling it, and I also look a lot slimmer from the face now lol So yes, you are 100 percent right! The longer it is, the more you need to attend your beard.
Great presentation Dan. Besides history, I see you are studying biology. Yes, a long beard it a lot more work, if you are going to make it look good. Thanks for the presentation. Arden
It makes sense. You could probably wash a short 2" beard with the cheapest supermarket soap, dye it weekly, and groom it with a 420° heated brush and it would likely be fine because the oldest the hair would get is about 4 months old before trimmed off.
Well, I’m speaking from absolute testing so I can confirm, my beard looks and feels about 1000 times better than it used to when I didn’t oil other than on wash days twice a week. There was no butter or fancy combs in my past.
Great video Dan. Love this video topic; I also agree with your point of the longer the beard the more care is needed. Especially for someone like me where I work outside in the elements a lot. For me, I think it is very important to take care of my Man Mane with most importantly Hydration especially this time of year. It gets super hot and humid here in Connecticut. Along with using the proper good to high quality oils, butters, balms (if yo go that route I don’t use balms just my personal preference). Also having a good morning routine as well as a night/bed time routine. Be sure to have a good rotation of washes/conditioners, oils (viscosities) and butters to keep the beard guessing. Of course that is my opinion some may agree or not. That’s cool too. Thanks Dan hope Sam C is well and the kiddos too. 👊🏻
Interesting. You mentioned dry and oily skin. I’ve heard also of combination skin but I don’t know how it might play into beard care. I also think my beard needs less care the farther I am from a mirror 😆. Perhaps for another video: Do longer beards require different care? I think the steps are identical - wash, dry (heat or not as one prefers), oil, groom; but are they different in tools, technique, or time? I’ll add that I believe “homeless” beards are more a matter of the commenter than the beard. Perhaps also a matter of the beardsman’s resources and mental processes - it seems to me that their beards tend to be in keeping with their general appearance, or sometimes, even better.
Dan with this month being mental health month. Was wondering if mental health affects beard growth? I ask you because you have gone in depth on sleep diet and hygiene. Could you please go in depth on the affects mental health on beard growth.
It's always sad to see old soldiers in the sink. However they have taught the young soldiers for good style. I do agree that the longer the beard the longer you're in the bathroom. Also the longer the beard the more health conscious you are with the whole body!
I might have said it before. But i have a neighbor, with a huge beard, probably the same size as yours. Only few differences is, he's an alcoholic, and you can almost smell him miles away, he got white hairs, probably due to his age. (I'll put him in his late 50's to early 60's), and lastly he probably doesn't do any care for his beard.
I take care of my beard the best way I can and I t shows people always complement me asking how long it took to grow and how well maintained it is it's a lot of work tho
I agree the longer the beard the more important for beard care. My hobbies are all outside (hunt fish camping) in hot and frigid weather. Staying hydrated and applying oil daily helps big time. Those frigid dry mornings in Colorado and wearing face masks for hunting, jackets that get beard hairs caught in zippers and buttons, etc. Control the controllables - stay hydrated and have a great beard care routine.

Well said!
"The bigger the beard, the bigger the billboard" That's FANTASTIC! I love that and it's true!
Thanks Big Stew!
I totally agree. One of the main reasons I keep my beard at a certain length now. Beard products tends 2 last longer aslo wit a shorter beard.
Very good point, true!

Totally agree the longer beard definitely needs looking after. The 11th commandment 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Definitely noticed a need for upkeep now that I have 8 months of growth hanging from my face.
Oh absolutely!
Can’t agree more with you. Being in a professional position I need to keep the beard looking clean.

Yes, absolutely. Stress is one of the biggest killers of beards

I am getting more and more people asking about my beard. They are getting to know what it takes to care for it.

If longer the beard the better. I know this MAY seem off topic but. Do you think one day I can grow one as long as yours and take good care of it?
Better was never said and it just comes down to personal preference. For your question, I would have to see the beard to know 🤝
I found a medium length beard to be more work than a long beard but maybe it was a getting used to it phase?
More work is possible, just a different topic than today’s “important” video. But I could see how medium can be more of a challenge to style
