I like to keep my beard at about a 1/4”. How would you suggest I apply beard butter without clogging my pores? Or would you say a 1/4” beard is too short use beard butter?
I do not have a beard (whew!) since I am female. But I do have REALLY dry skin! This Beard Butter keeps my skin from flaking all day, from itching, and it seems to help fix small spots of irritation or breakouts. It just blends in and works for me!
Gday Dan. Just decided at 57 to grow my first beard, and I am very happy I came across your channel. Lots of info given in an informative and relaxed manner. Keep up the good work, mate.
If anyone is watching that's new to growing a beard trust in the DanC. I have had issues growing my entire life. Would get frustrated and shave it off or attempt to groom and mess up resulting in shaving it off. Been watching Dan for over a year now and this last round I gave in and fully listened. I didn't groom and let it grow. The exception was that I would trim upper cheek patches that were not part of the main beard. The real secret is letting it grow, starting a good routine with oils that Dan suggests or reviews, and staying consistent. The pores require consistency and over time I noticed my beard skyrocket in thickness, length, and manageability. When I went to get a hair cut I even got comments on how thick and healthy it is. Blew my mind because I would always compare my beard to others. There are exceptions due to being a masters student my money is slim. I cannot afford anything extra such as a beard wash/conditioner. Dan does a great job in offering promo/discount codes for the community which helped me out. I started at Artius Man but found that Beard Octane has what works best for my beard. If you made it all the way to the bottom I wish you luck and remember a beard is supposed to be an enjoyable experience so it's okay to go at your own pace.
I've been using beard butter for almost a year now and it really is an absolute game changer. Before it, my beard was always wirey and tangly and dry. Beard oil definitely helped with that, but beard butter sealed the deal. I personally use Belle Isle from Detroit Grooming, it has a pleasant scent, melts very quickly in your hands while staying consistent in the jar, and it makes my beard feel like a dream after applying it. I've tried a couple other scents and "butters" in the past, some of which felt more like a cheap balm than a butter, and I just don't trust any other brand than Detroit Grooming at this point. Honest Amish's Beard Balm was a decent compromise when I ran out of Belle Isle, though it's consistency is a bit thicker and doesn't provide the same nourishment for me personally. I've also flirted with different scents, like vanilla and such, but nothing tops Belle Isle's mild citrus scent for me.
I’ve not found a single scent from Detroit that I haven’t liked!! Such a fantastic company with quality products!! Belle Isle is my wife’s favorite and I like Black.
You need to try Beard of God. I can't believe I like them all. A real must have for those who like beard butter with a nice texture and the scents are not overwhelming. I have lots of butters from different sources. It took me about 5 years to decide who's the favorite. Beard of God. Hands down.
I use bear butter pretty much every night and it feels like it helps. I still have some tangles in the morning, mostly along the neckline under my beard, but overall it helps for a better morning beard experience. Probably the two best morning feels from beard butter have come from Weatherbeard and Defined Beard Co butters, although Detroit Grooming is right there as well.
Anytime I have dampened my beard throughout the day I always would add a little more oil and get a real boost in fragrance. I rather go all out. But I guess in some situations you're not home with oil.
It all comes down to the ingredients. Often times hair butter is terrible, but I’m sure there are some quality ones out there that are similar to beard butter
I got lucky and the first company I tried, Live Bearded, had a beard butter. I was new to beard care and thought, wow this stuff sounds pretty awesome! When I get into something I go full force, so clearly I bought the butter with the oil, as well as most of the other products in unscented. I really enjoyed how the butter made my beard feel and helped with styling just a little. I wasn't using it 100% correctly, but I was close. I was using it twice a day with no water. Now I use butter once a day, with a little bit of water, and oh man what a difference.
Although labeled as a balm, I think Beardbrand's balm is actually a butter, between feel and the fact that wax is the last ingredient, I think of it as a butter.
I use it at bedtime if I know next day I will bath and wash it out, after bath a small amount of good oil, I’m a big fan of beard Octane I prefer them over any other brand I’ve tried.
This one of the most important videos i saw in this matter. I just started my beard care journey and the first things i got is beard, oil beard, balm, and beard wash.I thought that beard balm is doing same thing as butter. But now I’ve learned my mistake, thanks to you teacher.👊🏽
I am new to the beard game. I have watched you from the beginning of this journey. I did follow you with the beard wash and oil. I will be trying butter tonight!! Have a great Thanksgiving!!
Probably a dumb question but butter doesn’t straighten my short beard good enough like balm. Live bearded oil and butter smells are my favorite is it possible to mix some butter and a stronger unscented balm to get that hold but scent too. I also use butter at night before bed so it has its place I think.
Beard Butter Game Changer I use Beard Octane,Deadman’s Beard Co, Weatherbeard , Dr Nicks , Copper John’s butter top stuff and makes my beard smell good and feel so soft I’m never going back to no butter and def not using no CVS companies 😂
This video is right on time as I have been wondering what beard butter is and does. As I have mentioned in other videos new to the longer beard game usually keep it high and tight. Now this is a year ago so now I need to search for a more recent butter recommendation. I see "The Best Beard Butters" Top 6 but it is from 2019, hopefully will find a newer one. Great job brother, keep up the good work!
@@DanCBearded Beat you to the punch, watched and liked it already! I think I am leaning to the Doctor Nicks, I like the possibility of all the extra butters in it.
Well, i use Belle isle...i like it....But i dont want to use it before bed because i dont want my pillow to wipe it off or soak it up..But love what you do...my beard is at its best i believe..and its all because of you...so keep up the good work
I just learned that the Every Man Jack product I have been using is not actually Beard Butter as it is mislabeled. I guess I need to order some Beard Octane butter and see how much of a difference I feel with actual butter.
@@DanCBearded it looks like Amazon carries Detroit Grooming Co. so that might be fairly realistic for me to acquire. I think you like their stuff. I’ve heard you and Sam talking about Detroit Grooming in a least one or two of your videos. I just wish I could remember what scent(s) where preference by you guys.
I ordered Detroit Grooming Co beard buuter in Brlle Isle I should have it by Saturday, I'm really looking forward to trying there products for the first time.
I had a difficult time trying to verbalize my personal definition of beard butter. You named the formulations with water as a conditioner. I love it. There is a place for beard conditioners. My personal favorite ingredient to a beard butter is lanolin. No specific product name. I will take a dab of lanolin in my palm and mix it with commercial beard butter. It just really seems to emphasize all of the good things I expect. It quickly softens the beard. It seems to help the butter do it's job. Lanolin on its own is a greasy mess.
Dan I agree with you with what the definition of a butter should be with that being said I love leave-in conditioners I've had really good results with a few of them and my current favorite would be every man jacks beard butter as they call it but more like a leave-in conditioner but man it smells great and leaves my beard so soft that lately after I shower and wash it I have just been applying the butter right away and most the day my beard feels amazing. Of course it has some oil in it as well what that is the phase I'm in right now just using their beard butter mostly leave-in conditioner we'll call it 😃 you don't use leave-in conditioners much anymore do? Once a week I think I heard you say before but with such good butters you use now you probably don't even really need it.
Right on point, as usual! I sometimes use a very small amount of beard butter, on just the outside of the beard, in the morning if I need/want a scent boost, but generally prefer not to use butter during the day, as I like the feel of just oil in my beard. At night though, I use just enough beard butter to work it through my beard hair and lightly comb it through to distribute, but as you say, not work it into the skin underneath. I can really tell a difference if I don't use butter for a night or two. The butter really makes my beard noticeably softer and easier to comb through. I do not dampen my beard with a spray bottle or anything at night before I apply the butter, as any water that hits my beard curls it up and makes it look crazy, but as long as I use a good butter that easily melts into my palms, I have never had any issues and it still works wonders for me.
I believe that Beard Butter is an absolute game changer! It took me a yr. to come up with our recipe, and we went the route of no added wax, just the way we like it. It makes your beard feel so soft and nourished, I feel like noting else! Thank you for this video Dan, it really clarifies a lot for all of the bearded brothers out there. Keep killing it bro!
Hey Dan so would you say it’s ok to use beard butter in the morning and at night. I love the way it makes my beard feel. Very soft and when it matches the oils good strong smell. But mostly how it feels. I use at night only currently but wouldn’t mind in the morning too! Kits didn’t want to go over board.
Oh man! I did not realize that Every Man Jack was not a true Beard Butter! I am so looking forward to my free sample of beard oil and butter from Bad Ass Beard!
wouldn’t what you say about beard butter clogging your pores if rubbing directly on the skin kind of contradict the benefits of using it going to sleep ? say i’m a side sleeper - i would assume it would get all over your pillow and as a result, end up all over your face. i’m just trying to figure out the best time for me to use it. is it not a good idea for me to apply it before work?
Nope, there is a big difference of massaging/working in the butter into the skin and pores, as compared to placing your head on a pillow. Applying before work is totally fine too. Just personal preference
I use Beard Octane, Kingsmen, Live Bearded and Fable beard butter they all are great. I use it before I sleep. Like I’m about to put some in now at 9:30am bc I’m on night shift good night
Dan, how early in the growth process would you recommend using butter? I have a short (less than half inch) beard and have pretty oily skin. I do use a face wash and beard wash (beard octane) twice a day but my fear is that the butter will work its way down to skin overnight and cause issues. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
So you are not supposed to comb it through after applying beard butter. I have been doing wrong it then. Hopefully, not too late to correct that. What about brushing it down with boar bristle brush.
Have you considered making videos about the different butters found in beard butters, similar to your Carrier Oils 101 series? I'd love to learn about the differences in beard butter ingredients and what each type of butter really does.
I like the qualities of butter, but it does not get utilized as well because of my shower schedule. When I work and sweat, and get dirty throughput my day, so I have to bath when I get off of work, so I have to choose lighter, or less full bodied butters before bed because the next morning I am not trying to wash my beard in the morning since it was washed the afternoon, or evening before, unless it’s a very quick wash because I was drooling or sweating in my sleep, and even then is a light, non stripping wash like beard octane LCW, but even that doesn’t remove the waxy or full body butters tackiness I can feel throughout the the day. I prefer to rinse in the morning, and using only oil because I don’t like the waxiness, or sticky feeling through my day, not just because I don’t like the way it feels, but I don’t want my beard to hold on to dirt dust, and debris, and I try to be presentable at the start of every job I go to throughout my work day. I save the deeper nourishing butters like Detroit grooming, or beard octane for the nights I am not working the next day, otherwise I use Alley Cat, Kingsmen, Black Rebel,or a whipped butter like Beard Justice. Every butter is different which lends them all to have purpose for their different properties which also creates diversity for my beard never achieving that plateau effect I get by only using one or 2 different products.
Hi Dan. Now my beard (and stache) is getting longer, I struggle with a lot of food and some drinks. Do you have tips or video (could turn out funny) about this struggle?
All I can say is a lot of these target drug store brands messed up my beard I’m black and I looked up all the different things for my type of hair and it’s working only thing I used that’s in target is Shea Moisture and Cantù beard products
well I applied butter the first time tonight and didn't realize I shouldn't apply to skin. My beard is short so it is difficult to apply without getting on the skin.
As long as you can pinch the hairs, you can apply butter to a short beard without getting it to the skin. Just apply with an open palm and do not massage in
I got my Beard Octane products last night and I am impressed. I wanted to try the Whiskey n Hardtack, but some the scents I wanted to try were no longer listed.
Hey Dan, I recently shaved and was wondering if I need to use Beard Butter? My face has a 5 o’clock shadow currently, do I need to use beard butter and beard conditioner?
Great video Dan! When I started using beard butter I can never think about the bearded life before it. I always use beard butter before bed, makes a huge difference in how my beard feels and styles As for butters with wax and without, I really love both! They both have their place in my beard care routine 💯👊🤘
Beard butter was the very first beard product that I was introduced to by my barber. I am thankful I have been using this since day one and the health of my beard has reflected that as well! One thing I learned from this video is not to rub into the skin underneath! Good stuff Dan!
Hello,i love your videos and i have a question. Im new in the beard world and i want to know if its ok to mix beard butter with the beard oil or viceversa? like to apply the beard oil and then butter.
Gray beard here and yes, butter was a game changer for me. Gray beards are notorious for drying out and mine was no exception. Bedtime butter changed that and helped protect my hair shaft (which is lacking cuticles). A side benefit has been that I can use lighter oils when I want to, before butter I had to use heavier oils for the desired results but not now and I can use almost any oil.
I have heard lots of people saying not to do trimming with beard butter in your beard, do I need to wash my beard if I have previously used it or can I say apply it today and trim next day not washing it out? What is your opinion? I know that you normally don’t have to wash out beard butter.
Hi Dan, I’ve been using beard butter for a year now since I grew a beard. I love beard butter. I do use it every night on a damp beard. I probly have over 30 different companies I’ve bought from some of my favorites are Alley Cat Beard Co, Honyocker, Captains Stash, Whiskey n Hardtack, Bay Area, and Defined. Just putting some of my favorites out there for new beardsmen or any Beardsmen who haven’t tried beard butter yet. Thank you Dan
I've gotten beard butters online, and they all have a lotion type texture. Is that ok. It applies nicely when I rub it through my beard but it's not that "butter" texture
Am I the only one who is dying to see Dan with a short beard? No pressure, Dan. I know you're a long beard guy and you have pampered that thing for years. Still, just so curious to see face structure!
Great video Dan as always! New to beard butter and did pick up Every Man Jack "Beard Butter", but now wondering if I made a bad decision. Love the scent (Sandalwood), but did notice not so great performance. I use if after a shower which I find seems to be the time my beard craves moisture the most. Any suggestions on a replacement product?
First time subscriber here. I been watching a lot of your videos and I must say they’re amazing. I’m new to this and don’t know if I will continue but I just recently bought a Good-fellow beard oil and the balm. My question is the first ingredient is shea butter. So does mean I can use it as a butter? Thanks for all you do.
Hey Jason, welcome to the channel! Balms and butters both have "butter" ingredients as their main ingredients. The main difference is that butters have a lighter feel and balms are more solid. If you have a balm, you can make it more butter like by adding a few drops of oil in hand with your butter before melting it down
Dan, a question… Eric Adjepong, a well known chef uses some product that causes “sparkle” in his beard when he is on TV under the lights. I’m a musician and would love to replicate that Sparkle effect in my beard when performing under the lights. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Whit
I was using the Beardbrand balm. My beard always felt dry and stiff in the Colorado air. Then I saw your video on beard octane, tried the leavin conditioner, and then the Pumpkin Jack beard butter. Been with that since. Out of the shower, oil, butter, and some mustache wax like clockwork. Beard always looks well maintained and smells nice. At night, a quick wash and some leavin conditioner. In the dry Colorado air, the beard dries out quick. I must say, the butter feels and stays better than the conditioner. Thanks for sharing Sir.
I’ve recently heard some contradicting info about beard butter. I know you’re a researching type of guy Dan, do you have anything I can look into to read about the benefits of beard butter? Maybe pros and cons of using beard butter?
Outside of personal preference, I am not familiar with any cons to beard butter when applied correctly. I do not have any readings on it off the top of my head. I would recommend doing a quick search of “benefits of Shea butter for hair” and that will give you a really good starting point. Shea butter being by far the most common butter ingredient.
Great description on how the market views a butter. Although for myself, beard butter has no wax and beard balms have 3 categories. Light hold, medium, and strong holds. With a longer beard, I prefer a light balm over a butter. For me, a light balm locks in moisture better and longer, keeps my beard soft, although not much hold. When my beard is shorter I prefer a medium hold during the day followed with a no wax butter at night.
Thank you! Great perspective, I appreciate you sharing! I am against the idea of no wax in butter for the sole reason DGC literally invented beard butter and it had/has a small amount of wax. However, I would absolutely compromise that if we were able to get an industry standard. I could live with saying butter cannot have wax.
So if I’m not showering before bed I can just kinda run my beard under the sink get it nice and wet then dry it a bit and add butter? :) I know not to apply dry but can’t justify a second shower just to apply butter lol
It's been over two years now I've been learning from you. One of the first things I learned, was to use beard butter of the night before bed. I am one of those people that don't care much for the wax. I stock up on butter during the winter months, for there will be less chance of melting. Another good lesson Dan! You and yours have a good one. 👊
This was helping. Rn im using the black rebel butter for the 1st butter im using i ordered it with the beard oil u recommended. It is a bit shiny 😂 not used to that but could of used a bit too much, still experimenting. Is there a butter u would recommend for black beards??
Great video Dan! Butter has been a game changer for me, been using Alley Cat butter only after shower in the morning and before bed for about a month. Found that it works great for my gray beard it’s softer, more manageable and feels really healthy. Butter only is not for everyone but just works for me.
Hey there, when you use beard butter or the balm oil hack do you need to get your beard damp with warm or old water and before anything do you comb it first? Or after?
I'm using two butters primarily, an organic avocado and an argan beard butter. I have noticed a huge difference in the way my beard feels. Definitely agree that it should be put in at night. I'm getting a lot of great knowledge from this channel about beard care, beard products and and what to look for in them. Thanks for sharing your passion and experience on this platform!
If it’s stubble, yes. If you can “pinch and pull” the hairs, then start using butter. Just apply with an open palm aka don’t massage in with fingertips
I see that you have beard octane beard butter in this video. I saw on their website that their butter doesn't have jojoba oil in it. Would you still recommend it over something like honest amish balm that does have jojoba? I know it's a balm, but feels more like a butter to me. Thanks. Also, do you need to shampoo your beard the next day after using a butter like beard octane that doesn't have wax in it? One of the reason I'm looking into a butter from a different brand is because Honest Amish has wax in it so I have to wash my beard every day. I'm hoping that I wouldn't need to do that if I use a butter like beard octane, unless I get it dirty. Thanks for the help man. Love your channel.
Yes, I would strongly recommend the beard octane butter over the honest amish balm. I also do recommend washing your beard daily, with a daily/gentle wash. Regardless of wax or not. But there is less of a need to wash if no wax was used. I hope that helps!
@@DanCBearded Awesome. Just bought the beard octane. Unfortunately I couldn't use your code since I got it on amazon. Thanks again for all you do and the quick response. You're the real MVP! 💪
I've dabbled with beard butter but find myself using it only once or twice per week at most. And I do use quality beard butters that you have had good reviews on, one with a little wax that's actually my favorite that I wear during the day when I do use it.
Hey Dan, if I wanted to put beard butter in for the day (say I needed extra conditioning for some reason) after I put in oil, wait 5 minutes, then straighten with a heated brush…. Would I apply the butter before or after I hit the beard with a cold air blast?
I use waxless beard butter every time I use oil. I've started questioning if that's too much, mostly because of the cost of combos. Still working on finding the blend that keeps me softest.
Same here, except through all of this past week I've had to use a wash because I had been sweating more while at work, I had a break out on my cheek line and was wondering if I had used to much, but after a day or two with a medicated topical on that spot, it went away and I've continued my routine except for this weekend I'm using only oil and butter! I found Every Man Jack at Walgreens and even though the butter has aqua/water listed, I still think it works well!
My beard gets really curly after it gets damp, so would you suggest blow drying after applying beard butter? I generally brush and blow dry after a shower and just go oil since the butter on my dry beard brings back all the curls
My job requires me to travel on a weekly bases. Winter months when the weather is cooler is not a big deal but during the summer months, I cannot use beard butter because it melts. Is there an alternative to beard butter I can use?
I would call out that certain butters can have a better “hold”’ than others based on their ingredients. Beard Octane is “stiffer” than what I use at night which is much softer in texture. For that reason I use BOs at the end of my routine to start the day and have seen it help keep the fly always down. I would add that it may be worth while to do a video on different butters to show case how different they can be in textures based on ingredients. Nice video!
i also believe this is a great idea. ive been leaning on removing the use of beard balm out of my daily routine once i finish my last Tin and leaning more heavely on beard butter use.
@@rafaelramoscardona3108 I haven’t regretted doing it. I don’t miss the balms at all. I keep one for when I need the extra shape, but otherwise, I have yet to regret it. Take the plunge! I’d be curious to see if you get the same results I did
@@wperry2830 so far i have been using Bahawat beard butter but i am open to other suggestions/recommendations if you have any? Im definitly interested to see if there are any beard butters that stand above the rest at hydrating my beard.
I love beard butter. I use it in the mornings after shower, oil, & heat. Once in a while, I’ll add it before I use the cold shot, to really help lock it in. I try to use it before bed, but occasionally I forget and my beard lets me know about it the next morning. More shedding and tangled when I don’t apply before bed. Thanks for another great video, Dan! 🙏🏻
There has never been anything proven and I have never even really heard good anecdotal evidence. I’m sure it’s possible it can help but nothing I recommend now
Its been a year since I started growing a beard. I tried a few beard butters within the first several months, but I didnt notice a difference. I also didnt like the extra oil. (I used Detroit Grooming and Honyocker. Also Live Bearded, but that seemed horrible.) Now, I am debating trying one again. Which is what lead me to this video.
@@DanCBearded Ya, I just feel like my beard has been lacking something lately. I also wanted a little help with flyaways or the hair poofing out. So, I thought this would be the first step.
Great timing on the video for my recent experience. Just last night, I was applying butter before bed and I accidentally scooped out about twice as much as I usually do and decided to just try it to see what would happen. It seemed like too much, but I worked it in and went to bed. When I woke up, my beard was much more soft and manageable than usual. So my suggestion is to play around with the amount you use to find your personal preference and what works best for you. I didn't see much benefit from butter until just today when I used an appropriate amount for my beard.

Glad I watched this I went and checked label " brisk beard butter " first word was water..
Next question is hair butter same as beard butter
It all comes down to the ingredients. Often times hair butter is terrible, but I’m sure there are some quality ones out there that are similar to beard butter

I use it at bedtime if I know next day I will bath and wash it out, after bath a small amount of good oil, I’m a big fan of beard Octane I prefer them over any other brand I’ve tried.
Thanks for sharing!
I was on the butter band wagon early, love it...
Can really tell when I skip a night..
Big time!
This one of the most important videos i saw in this matter. I just started my beard care journey and the first things i got is beard, oil beard, balm, and beard wash.I thought that beard balm is doing same thing as butter. But now I’ve learned my mistake, thanks to you teacher.👊🏽
Awesome to hear!
Brilliant! Applying to a wet beard game changer!
It truly is!
I am new to the beard game. I have watched you from the beginning of this journey. I did follow you with the beard wash and oil. I will be trying butter tonight!! Have a great Thanksgiving!!
Awesome and happy Thanksgiving to you as well
Probably a dumb question but butter doesn’t straighten my short beard good enough like balm. Live bearded oil and butter smells are my favorite is it possible to mix some butter and a stronger unscented balm to get that hold but scent too. I also use butter at night before bed so it has its place I think.
Absolutely man, mix away!
Beard butter works great for me. I have strayed away from a lot of balms since my beard is getting longer.
Same same!
Beard Butter Game Changer I use Beard Octane,Deadman’s Beard Co, Weatherbeard , Dr Nicks , Copper John’s butter top stuff and makes my beard smell good and feel so soft I’m never going back to no butter and def not using no CVS companies 😂
🔥🔥🔥
This video is right on time as I have been wondering what beard butter is and does. As I have mentioned in other videos new to the longer beard game usually keep it high and tight. Now this is a year ago so now I need to search for a more recent butter recommendation. I see "The Best Beard Butters" Top 6 but it is from 2019, hopefully will find a newer one. Great job brother, keep up the good work!
Just search "best beard products" and my video for 2023 should be at the top! I have an entire chapter dedicated to butters
@@DanCBearded Beat you to the punch, watched and liked it already! I think I am leaning to the Doctor Nicks, I like the possibility of all the extra butters in it.
Well, i use Belle isle...i like it....But i dont want to use it before bed because i dont want my pillow to wipe it off or soak it up..But love what you do...my beard is at its best i believe..and its all because of you...so keep up the good work
Have you tried a satin or silk pillow case? that is a game changer for the problem you mentioned
@@DanCBearded well, my ass is to cheap for fancy stuff....lol
I just started using live bearded butter awesome stuff!
Great company!
That beard look good bro..thanks for the explanation.
You’re welcome!
I just learned that the Every Man Jack product I have been using is not actually Beard Butter as it is mislabeled. I guess I need to order some Beard Octane butter and see how much of a difference I feel with actual butter.
For sure!
Thankyou Sir , ..... very good..!!
Most welcome
I ordered Detroit Grooming Co beard buuter in Brlle Isle I should have it by Saturday, I'm really looking forward to trying there products for the first time.
Oh nice, prepare to love it!
Thanks for the feedback Kevin!
Not at all anymore. ➡️ ruclips.net/video/qYhgpTxpZPc/видео.htmlsi=zrw07TcJXcuvLsrt
That haircut looks awesome! Great video too!
Thank you!
Awesome feedback, thank you BLG!
Appreciate that you touched on not wetting it that’s a question I had
I believe that Beard Butter is an absolute game changer! It took me a yr. to come up with our recipe, and we went the route of no added wax, just the way we like it. It makes your beard feel so soft and nourished, I feel like noting else! Thank you for this video Dan, it really clarifies a lot for all of the bearded brothers out there. Keep killing it bro!
Thank you!!
@@DanCBearded you’re welcome!
Totally fine!
? Mixture of Hemp Seed, coconut and jojoba oils good for the beard.
If fractionated coconut, yes!
Just started beard butter. I use beard oil and then beard butter 5 minutes later but I still have split ends… sucks.
If you just started it’s not going to be magic. You need to trim away the split ends you have and figure out what is causing them.
Oh man! I did not realize that Every Man Jack was not a true Beard Butter! I am so looking forward to my free sample of beard oil and butter from Bad Ass Beard!
You will love some BABC
@@DanCBearded I can’t wait! The company reminds me of Black Rifle Coffee Company but sells beard products.
I love butters. Rarely do I buy an oil without the matching butter unless it’s a scent I won’t wear to bed.
Same hereb
wouldn’t what you say about beard butter clogging your pores if rubbing directly on the skin kind of contradict the benefits of using it going to sleep ? say i’m a side sleeper - i would assume it would get all over your pillow and as a result, end up all over your face. i’m just trying to figure out the best time for me to use it. is it not a good idea for me to apply it before work?
Nope, there is a big difference of massaging/working in the butter into the skin and pores, as compared to placing your head on a pillow. Applying before work is totally fine too. Just personal preference
I use Beard Octane, Kingsmen, Live Bearded and Fable beard butter they all are great. I use it before I sleep. Like I’m about to put some in now at 9:30am bc I’m on night shift good night
Awesome Sergio!
Thanks!
Once you can pinch and pull the hair, you are clear to use butter!
So you are not supposed to comb it through after applying beard butter. I have been doing wrong it then. Hopefully, not too late to correct that. What about brushing it down with boar bristle brush.
I recommend a comb more, but a brush can get the job done too
Have you considered making videos about the different butters found in beard butters, similar to your Carrier Oils 101 series? I'd love to learn about the differences in beard butter ingredients and what each type of butter really does.
Yup! That is for sure going to happen
Don't leave in conditioners also do the same job without clogging your pores?
Great question! I have a video on the topic, and leave-in is even worse for your pores. ruclips.net/video/vAUNGumzM3w/видео.html
I can see how different shower schedules can add challenges!
Hi Dan. Now my beard (and stache) is getting longer, I struggle with a lot of food and some drinks. Do you have tips or video (could turn out funny) about this struggle?
Absolutely = ruclips.net/video/KMe555guXWU/видео.htmlsi=rvexB4n-izqCPhB4
All I can say is a lot of these target drug store brands messed up my beard I’m black and I looked up all the different things for my type of hair and it’s working only thing I used that’s in target is Shea Moisture and Cantù beard products
Quality products truly do matter
Same boat. I make my own beard butter now. Mostly raw shea butter with some carrier oils and essential oils. Easy and I get to determine the smell.
Gonna start using butter again, soon. Had a few bad experiences, on my first run, with over-doing it. I think I’m almost ready again, though.
Oh awesome! Here to help when needed
What happened?
@@xBerreys Acne.. destroying pillows.. too much greasiness. I guess it takes time to strike that balance, right.?
well I applied butter the first time tonight and didn't realize I shouldn't apply to skin.
You've got me interested in using beard butter, Dan! If there are any beard butters in stores worth using, which do you recommend?
Unfortunately, literally no
Dang. I'll check out the butters you've recommended, in that case.
Hey Dan, I recently shaved and was wondering if I need to use Beard Butter? My face has a 5 o’clock shadow currently, do I need to use beard butter and beard conditioner?
No butter and no conditioner, until you can really pinch and pull the hairs. Just wash and oil at this point
Personally I like Beard Margarine myself.
I can’t believe it’s not butter!
love this!!
Thank you!
Great video Dan! When I started using beard butter I can never think about the bearded life before it. I always use beard butter before bed, makes a huge difference in how my beard feels and styles
As for butters with wax and without, I really love both! They both have their place in my beard care routine 💯👊🤘
My thoughts and experiences exactly!
First time Iam seeing a waving beard.
Well… welcome to the channel!
Beard butter was the very first beard product that I was introduced to by my barber. I am thankful I have been using this since day one and the health of my beard has reflected that as well! One thing I learned from this video is not to rub into the skin underneath! Good stuff Dan!
That is great Nate!
New to beard butter I have a big beard but never used!! How much do u recommend using!!!? 8’’ beard! Thanks!! I love your vids!
Just a one finger pad scoop. If that makes sense! Hershey kiss size or a little less
I feel like I can’t use beard butter yet because my beard is way to short right with out getting in my skin.
Best rule is to start using when you can pinch and pull the hairs. Then apply with an open palm
@@DanCBearded thanks! Well I’m at the stage now! So I’ll start tonight. I just started recently on embracing the beard life. So I have a lot to learn.
Hello,i love your videos and i have a question. Im new in the beard world and i want to know if its ok to mix beard butter with the beard oil or viceversa? like to apply the beard oil and then butter.
Yes, absolutely. Beard oil first, wait 3-5 minutes, and then beard butter
I am glad butter is working well for you!
The more I watch the more I learn. Definitely gotta get me some butter. I feel like I've asked questions that I later find a video you made of it.
I’m still always happy to help answer! Over 1,100 videos is a lot lol
I have heard lots of people saying not to do trimming with beard butter in your beard, do I need to wash my beard if I have previously used it or can I say apply it today and trim next day not washing it out? What is your opinion? I know that you normally don’t have to wash out beard butter.
Wash for sure!
@@DanCBearded ok thanks
Hi Dan, I’ve been using beard butter for a year now since I grew a beard. I love beard butter. I do use it every night on a damp beard. I probly have over 30 different companies I’ve bought from some of my favorites are Alley Cat Beard Co, Honyocker, Captains Stash, Whiskey n Hardtack, Bay Area, and Defined. Just putting some of my favorites out there for new beardsmen or any Beardsmen who haven’t tried beard butter yet. Thank you Dan
Awesome list right there!
Hello sir. What is the science behind applying butter to a damp instead of dry beard?
Helps spread the product and locks in moisture
I've gotten beard butters online, and they all have a lotion type texture. Is that ok. It applies nicely when I rub it through my beard but it's not that "butter" texture
No, those are not real beard butters. I am not a fan of those for a beard
Am I the only one who is dying to see Dan with a short beard? No pressure, Dan. I know you're a long beard guy and you have pampered that thing for years. Still, just so curious to see face structure!
My beard is much shorter in my earlier videos! I have no wants to go shorter at this time in my life
Definitely noticed a change for the better since I started to use butter. Would definitely recommend to a new beards man.
Awesome to hear!
Yeah I always followed your regimen and it worked perfectly for me, Morning: oil & balm, Night: oil and butter
That is fantastic to hear!
If you have a balm, you can make it more butter like by adding a few drops of oil in hand with your butter before melting it down
@@DanCBearded awesome! Thank you for the advice . Is there a a brand of butter you would recommend that u can get in store
@@EverydayMan83 unfortunately no. There aren’t real beard butters in stores

Dan, a question… Eric Adjepong, a well known chef uses some product that causes “sparkle” in his beard when he is on TV under the lights.
I’m a musician and would love to replicate that Sparkle effect in my beard when performing under the lights.
Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Whit
It’s likely a thicker oil, something with a lot of castor oil
I was using the Beardbrand balm. My beard always felt dry and stiff in the Colorado air. Then I saw your video on beard octane, tried the leavin conditioner, and then the Pumpkin Jack beard butter. Been with that since. Out of the shower, oil, butter, and some mustache wax like clockwork. Beard always looks well maintained and smells nice. At night, a quick wash and some leavin conditioner. In the dry Colorado air, the beard dries out quick. I must say, the butter feels and stays better than the conditioner. Thanks for sharing Sir.
That is fantastic to hear!!
I'm loving the tight fade. Your barber must be amazing!
Thank you sir! I am really digging it
So if I’m not showering before bed I can just kinda run my beard under the sink get it nice and wet then dry it a bit and add butter? :) I know not to apply dry but can’t justify a second shower just to apply butter lol
Yes, exactly!
It's been over two years now I've been learning from you. One of the first things I learned, was to use beard butter of the night before bed. I am one of those people that don't care much for the wax. I stock up on butter during the winter months, for there will be less chance of melting. Another good lesson Dan! You and yours have a good one. 👊
Fantastic, thanks for the comment Mitch!
This was helping. Rn im using the black rebel butter for the 1st butter im using i ordered it with the beard oil u recommended. It is a bit shiny 😂 not used to that but could of used a bit too much, still experimenting. Is there a butter u would recommend for black beards??

@Dan C Bearded - How about honest Amish beard balm? I’ve heard some say it’s closer to a butter, would you recommend it?
YeH, absolutely!
Great video Dan! Butter has been a game changer for me, been using Alley Cat butter only after shower in the morning and before bed for about a month. Found that it works great for my gray beard it’s softer, more manageable and feels really healthy. Butter only is not for everyone but just works for me.
Awesome to hear!
Do you still use leave in conditioner if so when , or just beard butter every night?
I do not use leave-in anymore. Here is a recent video on it: ruclips.net/video/qYhgpTxpZPc/видео.html
Hey there, when you use beard butter or the balm oil hack do you need to get your beard damp with warm or old water and before anything do you comb it first? Or after?
Room temp water is best. Comb before and after
I'm using two butters primarily, an organic avocado and an argan beard butter. I have noticed a huge difference in the way my beard feels. Definitely agree that it should be put in at night. I'm getting a lot of great knowledge from this channel about beard care, beard products and and what to look for in them. Thanks for sharing your passion and experience on this platform!
Thank you Aaron!
So if butter shouldn't be applied to the skin should guys with shorter beards more close to the face just use oil?
If it’s stubble, yes. If you can “pinch and pull” the hairs, then start using butter. Just apply with an open palm aka don’t massage in with fingertips
@@DanCBearded thanks
@@DanCBearded Also, I've been using the "best damn beard wash" daily. Do you think I'm ok there? If not, what would you recommend? Thanks again.
@BlitzinMackGaming that’s actually a decent daily wash. Should be fine!

Is your summer care routine different then your winter routine? The sweat and humidity can drive a lad mad.
I go towards more thin oils in the summer
I've dabbled with beard butter but find myself using it only once or twice per week at most. And I do use quality beard butters that you have had good reviews on, one with a little wax that's actually my favorite that I wear during the day when I do use it.
Good practical feedback!
Hey Dan, if I wanted to put beard butter in for the day (say I needed extra conditioning for some reason) after I put in oil, wait 5 minutes, then straighten with a heated brush…. Would I apply the butter before or after I hit the beard with a cold air blast?
No right or wrong answer, totally personal preference. I would do butter after
@@DanCBearded thank you! That’s what I was thinking too, to first lock in the style. See ya in a couple hours on your live show!
I have maestros classic. I love it.. so how much better is "real"
beard butter?
Much better! Not even comparable for me
I use waxless beard butter every time I use oil. I've started questioning if that's too much, mostly because of the cost of combos. Still working on finding the blend that keeps me softest.
I love the trial and error aspect of the journey!
Butter isn’t going to help with the curls much. It would be more about dialing in your heat routine to get the style you want
Gotcha! It’s usually fine after heat, but I had always applied the butter after to a dry beard and I think that’s what was bringing back all the curls
My job requires me to travel on a weekly bases. Winter months when the weather is cooler is not a big deal but during the summer months, I cannot use beard butter because it melts. Is there an alternative to beard butter I can use?
Just using a good quality beard oil will do!
Nice video!
Agreed on the hold observations! I will write the video idea down
i also believe this is a great idea. ive been leaning on removing the use of beard balm out of my daily routine once i finish my last Tin and leaning more heavely on beard butter use.
Thank you Brandon!
How do you feel about liquid biotin on the beard??
There has never been anything proven and I have never even really heard good anecdotal evidence. I’m sure it’s possible it can help but nothing I recommend now
Its been a year since I started growing a beard. I tried a few beard butters within the first several months, but I didnt notice a difference. I also didnt like the extra oil. (I used Detroit Grooming and Honyocker. Also Live Bearded, but that seemed horrible.) Now, I am debating trying one again. Which is what lead me to this video.
You should feel a difference in the morning when you rinse the butter out. If you don’t, maybe butter isn’t for you. Which of course is totally fine!
Great suggestion, thanks Kyle!
