For a game released back when every game had a greyish/brownish tone to them this one aged pretty well. My favorite part was replaying it with all the special modifications on weapons, I think you could eventually craft electric katanas and stuff like that. It was rough around the edges, but fun overall.
I hadn't considered that tbh, might be part of the reason it did so well. Simple gameplay, decent online coop, goofy fun combat. And gorgeous scenery. Shame about the town and jungle though.... Town is greyish/brown and the jungle.... There's just not a lot there
Very good open world design (better than both DL games, no cap) a shockingly well balanced combat system (you can just about die from any 3+ zombie fight if you're really bad, or come out unscathed if you're good) a progression system that truly matters (a lot of meaningful skills, with a handful significantly altering gameplay) excellent weapon variety (that you _have_ try out) a large number of quests and unique, memorable locations (with 4 "biomes", 3 large maps, a dozen or so "dungeons") awesome graphics for the time (Definitive Edition still holds up mostly)
The real strength of Dead Island was that it was actually about zombies. The final enemy of both DI games was a unique infected. The core of the story always revolved around the infected. Every side mission, every looming threat, it was always the infected. And they didn't fail at justifying this. Butchers, Rams, Screamers, Floaters, Wrestlers, Drowners, and those unique boss Infected from Riptide and the Grenadiers, they had sooo many terrifying mutations that gave credence to the threat the infected posed. This is something I'm missing in almost every other zombie game, even Dying Light 1 and 2. The infected just aren't the real threat. They're supposed to be the terrifying presence of these games. There's something so unnatural about what was once human now so uncaring about sloshing around in its own blood, not a hint of self preservation left as it ragingly hunts other humans. It's that horrific thought of ''What if that becomes my fate?'' Dead Island was extremely effective at making you feel that without shoving it into your face just by filling these little beach houses and resorts with all manner of monstrosities. You always had the infected to fear. From the looks of it, even its sequel isn't living up to that with its jokey tone. This isn't the fucking MCU. Not everything has to be shits and giggles... I don't wanna see people acting like Duke Nukem during the zombie apocalypse. I'm afraid we're not going to see another proper zombie game like Dead Island ever again.

Dead Island is certainly one of the open world games ever, but Dead Island _is not_ game. I think we can agree that there are some games that are just... game. But Dead Island is not quite one of them. (Still pretty great though.)
Even with Dying Light 1 and 2, Dead Island and Riptide arguably have the best zombie slaying to this day. The main problem was the floaty movement, the time it took to accelerate into one direction and stop moving once you held still. But hey, they made zombie types like the Ram, which are still better than its 2022 version, the Charger.
26:24 i always loved those beach huts & walkways over the sea.. made me want to recreate them in other games when u can do base building... if it were me, id probably try to live on those places... seems easy to defend. one entrance.. no zombies... nice views
This game was fun. But I played with some random people online who took me into area I was way underdeveloped for and left. Lol it was all fun and games until I got stuck in the city couldn't get out.
Briefly looking at your channel history and I can see why you came back to this game. Eleven Years ago, playing this game really launched your channel. You started to consistently get tens of thousands of views with your original series. A nice stroll through memory lane and arguably your fist success. Cheers.
Anybody else ever use that interactive attacks for melee weapons, the one that made you use the right analog stick to determine what direction you attack?
Dead island was a fantastic game. Not in the sense that it was super polished and everything was super smooth. But the fact that it had so many flaws made it fun. Ramming zombies with the trucks and seeing them get sent to Jupiter was great. It was also one of the first to attack games like this. Zombies and open world and doing the story your way. Nostalgia keeps this game alive for me tho. Me and my cousin would be up until 3 AM playing this game on PS3
Honestly when playing Dead Island I've gotten used to and can't play it without using the analog fighting style, it had that "what if this game had good VR" feel to it when being able to swing your weapons in different directions without that stuff looking side to side swipe when looking at your shadow with the digital fighting style. I hope Dead Island 2 had something like the analog fighting style if you didn't wanna use the digital
Fun fact! Dying light entered production as dead island 2 (which is why they feel similar and dead island 2 never released) but they realized it would be better as a new IP
This game had a lot of variety and did everything somewhat decently. I remember with each mechanic they introduced, melee weapons, driving, the healing and then I remembered the forst time you get guns I was like oooh shit. Game was a solid 7/10
When this game came out I honestly loved it but I kept wanting more like, the combat was clunky and the movement was too. Dying Light fixed all that and became my favourite game of all time, the Devs knew what they were doing in that regard.
Dying light got rid of driving and eventually guns. Plus the settings weren't nearly as pretty. Technically it was better but I liked the style of dead island and the atmosphere better. Plus dying light 2 basically removed fixing weapons. I hated the story of dying light 2 and loved dead islands cheesy story. There's plenty of reasons dead island is better IMO
@@DriverDGaming I can agree with the setting and atmosphere, there's something about a tropical island theme that goes really well with a zombie game. I'm looking forward to Dead Isand 2 and I'm hoping they can pull off the same aesthetic as the first games.
Dying light 2 was certainly downgraded in comparison to both Dead Island and first Dying light in various ways, which is a damn shame. However Dying light 1 was most definitely an improvement after Dead Island all around besides the different setting as that is to personal preference. Gameplay and mechanically wise it never lost any guns and only improved it’s shooting aspect, had an amazing dlc “the following” which also added an improved driving and personal car which could be tuned in various ways. The map got bigger and much more detailed with dozens of different fully furnished apartments, stores, pharmacies, garages to loot and explore and they nailed the atmosphere of a recently plagued and collapsed south-eastern city filled with bandits and hundreds of undead (100+ zombies can actually be seen on screen at once multiple times in the game in certain areas like bridges and main streets). I’d say that in comparison to Dying light 2 Dead Island is superior, however the first Dying light can be called the best out of those 3 and one of the best open world zombie slashers of all time.
@@Chadius_Thundercock It was definitely weaker than the first game, I think the studio went through a troubled development, comparing the E3 2018 version to the one they showed in 2020 was drastically different. It had the potential to be great but ended up pretty bad.
I remember putting in so many hours on Dead Island and Riptide, now with Dead Island 2 coming out, I might have to take a vacation from work because I'm so hyped.
As much as I love Dead Island, the world just feels so...dead. So linear. Like, I could tell you exactly what zombie will spawn at what location, down to the color of their swimsuit - I played this game so much. I just wish there was more to do outside of the main story other than collecting or killing.
While Dead Island is definitely a buggy mess, I absolutely love its athmosphere and levels. There's a lot of care and attention put into the world, the gameplay was fun too but very buggy at times.
This game is awesome honestly I'm so hyped for the new game, This game has always made me happy and I had beat this game about 20 times just because of how fun it is.
Dude it's crazy cause I've been playing this recently lol and what's even crazier is I said the same exact thing when I was telling my cousin about it having a farcry 3 look to it
I have two ongoing play troughs at the moment, one for COOP, one for single player. The game has its flaws and bad gameplay decisions in it, it feels trashy, but it's addictive. Strangely enough, I didn't like Dying Light 1 at all, and I haven't even played part 2. BTW. Sam B's intro is cult. Normally, I try to mod anything between me and a game away to save valuable seconds, but in this case, I have to start every session watching the intro of DI.
Bro I’m so excited for Dead Island 2, looks really good. Hopefully it is better than Dying light 2 (probs not be tho). I love the aesthetics and graphics, just not the setting because it isn’t an island like the first game.
I'm replaying the game every 2-3 years or so. There is something about the first act/area (the istalnd resort), which I cannot wrap my head around, but to this day I think that, atmospherically, that is one of the best areas ever made in any videogame. It might be the slick looks of sunshine and bone-white beaches which they nailed (playing the Definitive Edition, so graphics are updated). It might be the utter juxtaposition of a picture-perfect holiday beach resort being littered with blood, guts, corpses and zombies. I don't know. But as an opening act and as an area as a whole, the sheer quality of it is just through the roof for me. Techland NAILED it.
I remember playing this game one time whilst tripping with mates in the sewer section and all I could do was laugh my arse off at how goofy the game is. Loved it, cant wait for the second game!
@@flapjack476 yeah word, me and a couple of the boys watched Dawn of the Dead while tripping on acid, funniest shit ever, i laughed so much my face was sore
I LOVED these games to death, warts and all. In Dying Light I really missed the analogue stick combat system where you swing your weapon with the right stick. Feels so unique and it worked pretty well too!
Probably unintentional (or maybe not) but the setting being a tropical island arks back to late 70's/early 80's italian zombie movies. There are quite a few of them set in tropical islands. Must be why I love this game so much, currently doing a playthrough with Logan. PS: don't crucify me but I prefer the Dead Island games to Dying Light. Just my opinion.
Riptide was the part II of Dead Island it was sort of a standalone game, but not really, kinda like a giant DLC. I really like that one too...the story was good, plus it threw in some new environments like larger city areas, sewers, etc.
I loved this when it came out. It did get progressively worse as the game went on though. The initial area design was amazing, the beach resort. But then it went into a town sort of area which was alright and then a jungle which in my opinion was terrible. Lile the devs just gave up. The next game Riptide seemed to all be in the jungle and just didn't catch my interest at all. In short setting is really important and I think number 2 won't skimp out on that. Fingers crossed we get an awesome brutal masterpiece
This truly is a great zombie basher. Superb setting as well. Even though I believe Dying Light ended up being superior, this was a great start for Techland.
Bought this game for a little under £2 in the ps store sale. This is the most fun I’ve had in a zombies game in a long time. I haven’t played dying light 1 or 2, but after im done with this, i will definitely move onto those…
Dead Island is one of my Top 5 fav games, but I feel Dead Island 2 is gonna blow the first one out of the water in every aspect. Already pre-ordered the HELL-A Edition for my Series X. 🤘
Modding this game back in the day was crazy😂 I remember someone gave me an amped up baseball bat that sent zombies FLYING, and guns that were like the thunder gun from Black Ops Zombies
Funny. I finally played the original Dead Island after failing to get into it in 2012 and 2013. Finished it literally an hour before this video was posted. And I have to say. Everything in this game after the Act 1 resort part is more or less the unfinished early alpha of the far superior Dying Light.
I remember seeing the trailer with the family i was like "this is gonna be the best game ever" once i played it i was like "wtf is this?", but then again it was my fault for seeing a game trailer instead of actual gameplay , i was expecting a good and dark story but it was mhhhh not even scary also voice acting wasn't that great whole game just felt like a side mission even the main story felt a little flat
I loved this game growing up, it's amazing how it still holds up graphically. I wish there were more mods on PC for it though, to revamp it that extra bit
This is still in my top 5 favorite games. Being 12 year old who was still scared shitless to Zombies (thanks World at War Zombies) this game was such a different pace. Met a kid who became a long time friend and we did everything, found all the easter eggs. God I miss the old days
I loved the game.. The way u were able to break the arms off the zombies, so they were all limp and not able to use their arms. That really stuck with me.. And of course also the sick intro track. “Who do u voodoo, Bitch!”.
If only it didn't have that section with the knife arm zombie at the plane roughly halfway/two-thirds through. Makes soloing it pointless unless somebody has fixed it. That escort mission that basically insta-fails solo.
I honestly enjoyed Dead Island Riptide more. It also brought in my favourite choice of player character as well (John Morgan). Actually really excited for Dead Island 2, I’m still skeptical but excited.
Even though I didn't play much Dead Island One, it did give me one of my favourite gaming moments of all time. I kept seeing something strange happening at the corner of the screen, then I kept hearing something weird, then a character ran towards me and scared the shit out of me. Turned out it was another real person in my single player game and I had no idea other players could join my game. It scared the crap out of me but in the best possible way
I literally playing this game again yesterday, still blast and adrenaline rush. I remembered finishing the game around 2013. I attempted to play this as a mod, but it would make it not challanging
And somehow I played the different version? I had a "+" aim UI. Different UI when taking decision for mission, where we hold a bounty paper. And even that thug zombies are harder to kill
I can't believe this was 11 years ago at the peak of zombie games. Left 4 Dead, DayZ Mod, COD Zombies, Killing Floor, 7 Days to Die, Dead Rising, The Walking Dead
I fell in love with Dead Island when it came out…unfortunately the Duplication Glitch was what made it playable for me. Getting to Lv50 was ridiculous and even with the glitch, it still took forever.
Dead island perfectly encapsulates a kids imagination of what a zombie apocalypse while keeping it grounded enough to keep up immersion for the most part one of the best open world zombie games out there for sure
Main things I want when combating zombies -Ability to throw melee qeapons or items like the first game(pretty basic) -When you swing it has impact and you bring the weapon back to swing again. Not swing theough the head from the right, and then swing from left. I want it to feel like i hit something and i retract my arm back to hit again. Not swing through the head left to right aimlessly
Such a good game, and the DLC Riptide made so many much needed improvements to the original game too! Very excited to see where they take Dead Island 2

Briefly looking at your channel history and I can see why you came back to this game. Eleven Years ago, playing this game really launched your channel. You started to consistently get tens of thousands of views with your original series. A nice stroll through memory lane and arguably your fist success. Cheers.
When characters said "looks like we are stuck on this Dead Island" that was 10/10 moment.
The first area is the best. The resort, the beach, etc… After that it loses a lot of its charm but is still quite fun.
Anybody else ever use that interactive attacks for melee weapons, the one that made you use the right analog stick to determine what direction you attack?
This is the way.
It made the game so much better, crippling zombies with precision was satisfying
Using Xian for backwatd flying strike was amazing
Dead island was a fantastic game. Not in the sense that it was super polished and everything was super smooth. But the fact that it had so many flaws made it fun. Ramming zombies with the trucks and seeing them get sent to Jupiter was great. It was also one of the first to attack games like this. Zombies and open world and doing the story your way. Nostalgia keeps this game alive for me tho. Me and my cousin would be up until 3 AM playing this game on PS3
I remember trying to unlock the el glova hands, you could use your stamina as lightning!
Yes it is one of the open world games!
Ever bro, ever...
13:00 I always wondered what he was talking about when he says “where the hell did I put that”
Honestly when playing Dead Island I've gotten used to and can't play it without using the analog fighting style, it had that "what if this game had good VR" feel to it when being able to swing your weapons in different directions without that stuff looking side to side swipe when looking at your shadow with the digital fighting style.
That's an Australian accent not New Zealand. We don't sound like that. We sound Kiwi and there is a big difference in accent.
I think we can all agree that dying light 2 sucks balls?
@@Chadius_Thundercock It was definitely weaker than the first game, I think the studio went through a troubled development, comparing the E3 2018 version to the one they showed in 2020 was drastically different. It had the potential to be great but ended up pretty bad.
I remember putting in so many hours on Dead Island and Riptide, now with Dead Island 2 coming out, I might have to take a vacation from work because I'm so hyped.
congratulations you have been selected among my shortlisted winner's🎉
Yea! The Most Underrated Open World Games Before GTA 5!
I had to read the title 5 times my head was hurting and I was confused
As much as I love Dead Island, the world just feels so...dead. So linear. Like, I could tell you exactly what zombie will spawn at what location, down to the color of their swimsuit - I played this game so much. I just wish there was more to do outside of the main story other than collecting or killing.
While Dead Island is definitely a buggy mess, I absolutely love its athmosphere and levels. There's a lot of care and attention put into the world, the gameplay was fun too but very buggy at times.
I always enjoyed this game, never really understood the hate for it
it's dumb fun, but it's fun and that's the important part
the games you play on your channel is the main reason why i love your videos, they just bring back so much joy i had when i was a kid and life was ez
This game is awesome honestly I'm so hyped for the new game, This game has always made me happy and I had beat this game about 20 times just because of how fun it is.
Dude it's crazy cause I've been playing this recently lol and what's even crazier is I said the same exact thing when I was telling my cousin about it having a farcry 3 look to it
jayvee makes one of the open world reviews out there!
oh thank you that's one of the things that's ever been said to me 😊
Jayvee I love ur videos and would love to see a pt.2 of this game and ur commentary is gold 😂
I've tried playing Dying Light quite a few times and it's fun for a little while but then gets boring.
dead island is goofy, but it works yenno?
personally I loved both dead island and riptide, and I prefer riptide so much more, still love the first one
Bro I’m so excited for Dead Island 2, looks really good. Hopefully it is better than Dying light 2 (probs not be tho). I love the aesthetics and graphics, just not the setting because it isn’t an island like the first game.
It won't be hard to be better than dl2
You played this while tripping? 🫡 brave man.
@@frado9194 Honestly made it funnier rather than scarier
@@flapjack476 yeah word, me and a couple of the boys watched Dawn of the Dead while tripping on acid, funniest shit ever, i laughed so much my face was sore
Hey guys, the definitive edition is on sale for four dollars on the Xbox store!!
I LOVED these games to death, warts and all. In Dying Light I really missed the analogue stick combat system where you swing your weapon with the right stick. Feels so unique and it worked pretty well too!
Yeah me too surprised more games don’t do that
Probably unintentional (or maybe not) but the setting being a tropical island arks back to late 70's/early 80's italian zombie movies. There are quite a few of them set in tropical islands. Must be why I love this game so much, currently doing a playthrough with Logan.
PS: don't crucify me but I prefer the Dead Island games to Dying Light. Just my opinion.
wow, a game with a written story, coded gameplay, a difficulty, and weapons. definitely one of my games ever!
Riptide was the part II of Dead Island it was sort of a standalone game, but not really, kinda like a giant DLC. I really like that one too...the story was good, plus it threw in some new environments like larger city areas, sewers, etc.
the swamp area was so crazy, the enemies so fast and hit hard and these damn things in the lake that follow you too, kinda creepy as well, loved it!
@@trythis2006 yeah, can't wait for the new game.
Original in thumbnail
Definitive edition in video
Upload a second part to this bruh! you are funny as hell and I get mad nostalgic over this game.
Besides the fact I didn't find the jungle to be bad at all dead island riptide was not just jungle later half the game was a city map
I would shit myself as soon as I hear one of the running zombies scream before they start running towards you full speed. Great game.
This truly is a great zombie basher. Superb setting as well. Even though I believe Dying Light ended up being superior, this was a great start for Techland.
Bought this game for a little under £2 in the ps store sale. This is the most fun I’ve had in a zombies game in a long time. I haven’t played dying light 1 or 2, but after im done with this, i will definitely move onto those…
This man's spitting facts 💯 👏
some people don't wanna hear the truth 😤 dead island is a video game damnit
@@jayveeeee it's not only a video game, it's one of the video games ever 😎
I mainly clicked this video so i can see if the title was a typo or not
Dead Island is one of my Top 5 fav games, but I feel Dead Island 2 is gonna blow the first one out of the water in every aspect.
That's your opinion
02:21 thanks for remembering our city name dude, Hanoi welcome you ^^
I remember seeing the trailer with the family i was like "this is gonna be the best game ever" once i played it i was like "wtf is this?", but then again it was my fault for seeing a game trailer instead of actual gameplay , i was expecting a good and dark story but it was mhhhh not even scary also voice acting wasn't that great whole game just felt like a side mission even the main story felt a little flat
You were definitely not the only one haha
I loved this game growing up, it's amazing how it still holds up graphically. I wish there were more mods on PC for it though, to revamp it that extra bit
Just spotted Steve Blum as Sinamoi in this. I recognized his deep voice through that accent
that guy is a vocal genius
@@jayveeeee yes fr. And he's in everything it seems like.
This is still in my top 5 favorite games. Being 12 year old who was still scared shitless to Zombies (thanks World at War Zombies) this game was such a different pace. Met a kid who became a long time friend and we did everything, found all the easter eggs. God I miss the old days
Really glad I found your channel i've been loving your videos and your personality, thank you!
thanks for watching man! :)
Dead island is an absolute game. Hands down
Even though I didn't play much Dead Island One, it did give me one of my favourite gaming moments of all time. I kept seeing something strange happening at the corner of the screen, then I kept hearing something weird, then a character ran towards me and scared the shit out of me. Turned out it was another real person in my single player game and I had no idea other players could join my game. It scared the crap out of me but in the best possible way
Best? Worst? Most Boring? Most Fun? I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE "IS ONE OF THE (LITERALLY NOTHING)" TREND
It's pretty straight forward in concept, it's neither best nor worst, it just IS.
This game was free a year later on Xbox live and me and my friend would play with each other almost every single day , those were the days
Was having a mini stroke watched this feel 1000x better thanks man
i am a doctor
I literally playing this game again yesterday, still blast and adrenaline rush. I remembered finishing the game around 2013. I attempted to play this as a mod, but it would make it not challanging
And somehow I played the different version? I had a "+" aim UI. Different UI when taking decision for mission, where we hold a bounty paper. And even that thug zombies are harder to kill
I love Dead Island series and cant wait for DI2. Also it is indeed one of the open world games. Very good one at that.
congratulations you have been selected among my shortlisted winner's🎉
I can't believe this was 11 years ago at the peak of zombie games. Left 4 Dead, DayZ Mod, COD Zombies, Killing Floor, 7 Days to Die, Dead Rising, The Walking Dead
This definitely deserves to be in the hall of open world games
Bro...I played this game so so much. Absolutely unmatched in atmosphere and melee visceral combat.
Definitely one of the open worlds out there.
I fell in love with Dead Island when it came out…unfortunately the Duplication Glitch was what made it playable for me. Getting to Lv50 was ridiculous and even with the glitch, it still took forever.
I was shocked when the main character said "this is Dead Island" and proceeds to kill the island
Dead island perfectly encapsulates a kids imagination of what a zombie apocalypse while keeping it grounded enough to keep up immersion for the most part one of the best open world zombie games out there for sure
No it is not. It’s a really bad game
Main things I want when combating zombies
-Ability to throw melee qeapons or items like the first game(pretty basic)
-When you swing it has impact and you bring the weapon back to swing again. Not swing theough the head from the right, and then swing from left. I want it to feel like i hit something and i retract my arm back to hit again. Not swing through the head left to right aimlessly
2:06 is it just me or do elevators fall in like every zombie game
Such a good game, and the DLC Riptide made so many much needed improvements to the original game too! Very excited to see where they take Dead Island 2
congratulations you have been selected among my shortlisted winner's🎉
