Nice jacket but if you want an RAF Irvin jacket that is absolutely identical to the Early pattern Battle of Britain ones Eastman leather in Devon, England is the place to go. They are broken grain sheepskin so ready worn in. Most people think that mine is an original as it is so accurate right down to a buckle cast from an original and an elastic collar strap. These jackets are cut from original Irvin patterns and stitched on machines bought from an original maker. They are expensive at £1200 British pounds sterling. They are without a doubt the best Irvin's out there. Stay safe Sir! Dave.
Thank you so much, I’ve purchased a B3 jacket years ago from Eastman, but from the US, back then it was $350. I grew out of it, but now I have to check these jackets out, thank you so much 😊
@@alfyman100 ok, no problem! If you buy an RAF Jacket from Eastman, its best to treat it with 3 coats of the liquid leather they sell. One coat every 24 hours. This takes the stiffness out of the jacket and makes them look amazing. The jackets are broken grain sheepskin but not aged. I have 3 now but bought one off ebay and the other two when they were £550. They are very expensive now! The jacket you are wearing here though looks great on you!! I find it better if you go a size larger. There is a great photo around of BOB Fighter pilot John Kilmartin wearing an Irvin that is about 3 sizes too big. It looks great on him. You lost me at “neatsfoot oil”. Neatsfoot oil oxidises & goes hard over time and destroys the leather. Imagine putting sharp sand in between the fibres. As you move, it saws & cuts them breaking down the fibres from within. You were much better off using a simple mix of tallow (or tallow & lard), bees wax, a bit of lanolin and a few drops of an anti bacterial/fungal like tea tree oil. This would safely lubricate the fibres & restore the leather at a safe Ph.
@@alfyman100 Unfortunately there is soo much bad info on the net. Theres a lot of ppl (women mostly) pushing coconut oil as a great leather condition which is so WRONG! Its totally the wrong Ph. Heck its the oil from a plant which has NOTHING to do with mammals. At least use something species relevant. The points i mentioned prior was from an article i read ages ago from a guy who’s profession was horse saddlery and this is what was taught during his apprenticeship back in the day. The article goes into great detail about what & why (and why nots) about leather products for preservation etc & one of those “why nots” was the use of neatsfoot oil. Neatsfoot oil probably feels like its done wonders in the short term, but its when it oxidises is when the damage happens on a microscopic level. Edit: its horses for courses! You must use different products for different leathers & finishes. Example: you wouldnt want to use a lard or tallow conditioner on boots/shoes that you want to shine, as the wax polish wont take. But for work boots etc, a lard or tallow based conditioner would be good.
