Both have different purposes. I won't take my shearling bomber jacket on a hike. That's where I'll have my down jacket in my backpack. When there's exercise involved it's easy to overheat and you need to stash the big jacket away. A shearling jacket doesn't stash easily. When it comes to low movement such as driving at -10 c with windows down, winter camp with bonfire, walking slow through brush, going to the bar etc, its the shearling jacket. The shearling jacket is my daily winter jacket to work, around home, playing with kids in the snow. I use it 90% of winter to my down jacket at 10%. It's tough, ultra warm, looks amazing and will most likely outlive me. The down is often a backup in my car for exercise or for car breakdown for others.
Exactly down is for performance when you are generating body heat. I just now in the last year got a proper shell, and down mid layer coat. Wool base layer obviously. In WI we routinely spend a month below-30F. I have a sheep skin on the way but my experience with wool it should preform my every day tasks quite well
Sheepskin is style staple and just plain gorgeous. I have a Moncler too but always come back to my sheepskin I just feel it’s the rolls Royce of Jackets
I bought my sheepskin coat from The British Sheepskin company! They have a great website and it has already lasted 5 years of British winters for me! Far more than the down North Face jackets that I bought which were like wearing a bin liner and we’re not as durable or moisture wicking than the natural shearling. True it’s not waterproof but I just use an umbrella anyway.
If you are buying a down jacket for very cold conditions, look for non sewn through baffles(or box baffles) this prevents the down from migrating, while eliminating the cold spots created by sewn through baffles. A technique also used in high quality down winter sleeping bags.
I have a black m51 fishtail pattern parka from China. They're really popular there and they come with interchangeable liners and hood fur. You can get rabbit fur, synthetic and down liners for them. Bought the fur and synthetic liners (down tends to come out in the wash) as well as 2 real and 4 faux fur ruffs. However, this is something I would wear on vacation. In the city, even down to - 15 C, I like to wear 24-32oz wool long coats and pea coats. As heavy as sheepskin but lower maintenance and more durable.
Sheepskin is definitely the more ethical choice I think, it's really durable and long lasting. I'd suggest buying from a local brand that can tell you whrre they source the wool from
This is what I’m saying. Almost like a gun for self defense. Big out right purchase, lifelong value if maintained properly!! It really would pay for itself over the years. Wool doesn’t do it, down has its downs lel. Shearling it’s best value for $$$ over time. If you live in a cold climate & whether intend to stay or not, a quality, life saving, and convenient winter coat is necessary for any family or person.
Got a sheepskin a month and a half ago. Been loving it. Just need some breaking in the collar to look around while driving and that might need another year or so, but I'm sure it'll happen.
I have the Todd Snyder x Crescent Downworks currently, and also a B3 shearling bomber from some no name brand (it’s definitely real and well made, just got it secondhand). Both are awesome investments. Side note: I think that Crescent Down Works does a way better down jacket than Moncler or Canada Goose (I’ve had both). It’s lighter and warmer, their nylon feels better too on skin if you wear just a t-shirt under

bison, water buffalo, cowhide are all better options than sheepskin due the fact that the leather is cheaper - the prices that you mentioned are inflated through the rough. You can pick up quality leather for far FAR cheaper than what you're listing. As for down jackets, meh...
When you are cold, screw "ethics and sustainability"; you want to survive. You do NOT have to spend big dollars on good clothing, note I say clothing and not fashion. $1500 USD will get you a Canada Goose Expedition, same as Apocalypse Design or half that for Fjallraven. Problem with heavy winter clothing is it is bulky so elevators and cars will be a challenge. They aren't fashionable, but they'll keep you warm. I wore a Canada Goose parka in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and Apocalypse Design while attending university in Fairbanks, Alaska USA. Don't buy a name, buy for function.
It's called layering and there's nothing novel about it. You kind of lock yourself out of that in a B-3, especially with mild temperatures there will be no adjustability at all, just a T shirt and the sheepskin. I swear you hipsters live on another planet, wearing all this auspicious high priced mint condition vintage work wear having never put a hard days work in the elements in your lives.
@@CeeAreDee My previous question was kind of dumb since you already answered it in the video. Anywayyyy... What are your thoughts when we compare high end down jacket against sheepskin leather jacket at -10°c to -20°C? Let's say Canada Goose since it got some preset temperature ranks. How would different leather thicknesses matter (15mm or 18mm?) I'm being specific here since I'm considering buying a sheepskin jacket but I'm not sure can it hold against freezing hell. And yes, everyone can handle cold differently but I don't know shit about leather jackets :D Danke schön!
@@jacklll2631 I'm gonna chime in. I live in Romania, and i think it gets a little chillier than Germany.I have a sheepskin that i had worn at -20C with just a shirt underneath. That's it.Normally i just wear a tshirt,if you can believe it. As i am a leather aficionado, this being my second sheepskin, plus other leather jackets, leather by itself is cold as ice in chilly temperatures. You don't have to look for the thickness of the leather, but of the fur that's attached to it. It kinda makes a small difference. But i assume most sold online are thick enough. Another thing that i would suggest is to look for a model that you can zip up all the way-it's extremely useful. The ones that have a full zipper from top to bottom, have also wide collars. That means that if you zip it up all the way,it goes to your eyes.Just a beanie on top,and you're isolated from the elements.Only your eyes are visible,ha ha. No need for neck scarfs, and other cumbersome things. And nothing gets through the leather, not even water. I'll post you the links on the website were i bought it from,it's really good quality, highy recommended. Plus it's way cheaper than what you can get it western europe or CanUsa. www.aavesa.com/product/men-sheepskin-jacket-323p/ This is the exact model that i have, and it's the black one. Full black. That's another thing i recommend, get one that's dark. I had a brown one(brown leather and brown fur) and it gets kinda colored, after a while(white fur is even worst). With a dark leather and dark fur one,you don't have that problem-it stays dark for ever, and muck and dirt are not visible(pure black it's the best, like i have). Also,if you look at an very old bomber jacket, the leather stayed ok(dark color) but the fur looks very oldish. That's my 2 cents on that. But feel free to browse that site, they have more "expensive" models too. I went to Australia and was shocked how expensive a jacket like mine was,3-4 times the price, and the design was more flimsy, even. Also to note,it's heavy,as all are. BUT tough, like no other. Apparently the company delivers worldwide,so probably can be sent your way. The idea is if you buy from from somewhere in Eastern Europe,it's gonna be cheaper. Way cheaper. Also,if you buy it from your country in the west, avoid fashion brands made sheepskins. They are obscenely priced-if you go local,go for a brand that specializes in these things.
@@jacklll2631 Of course, hope it puts things in perspective. Ah,and btw i would recommend getting one with easy acces to pockets(if they have a zipper is ok),they come in useful.Almost all sheepskins don't have interior pockets keep that in mind. Another thing to look for is where the main zipper is,if they have a windbreak,so to speak. A small layer of fabric (leather behind the zipper,so wind desn't come through. It's not a biggie at all,but kinda helps. Also,i suppose you can look at second hands in your area, maybe you can snuck up on a cheaper one, that looks nice. Thrifts stores and all that. They look awesome anyways, and are quite durable for decades. If you look at what northern tribes wear,it's always a form of natural stuff. Now imagine a jacket like this, made from reindeer. That would be even warmer,i suppose.
3000 eur totally worth it?!? Are you kidding? Maybe only if you want to go hunting penguins, but other than that any reasonable winter jacket (fur is best) won't cost you much more than 500,-. Jesus Christ, no wonder all prices are skyrocketting if people start to believe paying 3000eur for a jacket is something normal.

@@robcaputo9708 you're quite a rude one, aren't you??
Why does he Need to hear the backhanded compliments. You're very arrogant. Maybe next time you disagree with someone, just keep scrolling instead of being so toxic??
Are decathlon in your country ?
Their home brand down jackets rate very well.
B3 with the hood is my good to
Good shout.
That intro music is awesome!
🙌🏻
Is that F or C?
Great video appreciate the comparison.
Thank you. You’re welcome
Here in so call it’s more of a hoodie or long sleeve shirt debate. I’d love to have the options to wear big jackets but with 60 degree lows I don’t think that’s an option😂
Haha, I would swap that for the berlin winters any day!
Wait fast forwarding a vid of yours? I think NOT! 😆 🔥
Haha, cheers buddy!
an n1 deck jacket also has a alpaca/wool linging…
bison, water buffalo, cowhide are all better options than sheepskin due the fact that the leather is cheaper - the prices that you mentioned are inflated through the rough. You can pick up quality leather for far FAR cheaper than what you're listing. As for down jackets, meh...
Sheepskin all day er day!
Yeah, I am a sheepskin fan myself
This Detroit winter hasn’t really been below 20. A 20 oz fleece hoodie and a 15 oz denim jacket has been fine.
Dosnt it get down really cold there? Has it just been a warm winter?
You should have shown the jackets you have!
I guess all the hard days toil you’re putting in is guarding that tiny, tiny gate.
I disagree. Wool base layers and fur outer layers is best. Yes its heavy but id rather have heavy and keep my fingers and toes.
Nice one, bruh.
Appreciated
At what temperature you usually wear sheepskin jacket?
Anywhere from about 5 degrees down.
How would different leather thicknesses matter (15mm or 18mm?)
I'm being specific here since I'm considering buying a sheepskin jacket but I'm not sure can it hold against freezing hell. And yes, everyone can handle cold differently but I don't know shit about leather jackets :D
Danke schön!
Plus it's way cheaper than what you can get it western europe or CanUsa.
www.aavesa.com/product/men-sheepskin-jacket-323p/
This is the exact model that i have, and it's the black one.
@@alakhazom Thank you so much!
I guess it depends on what you’re looking for.
Animal ethics are so important...until I get foie gras on my plate...
Never got a taste for it.
Don't wash either of these jackets. Neither of them are supposed to get wet. Down just stops working forever. And leather cracks after it dries

@@CeeAreDee I figured it out. You must have blocked me because of my negative posts about LVC.
@@AaronsRandomLife if I did that intentionally , buddy must have been quite a nasty post. I can count on one hand the number of accounts I’ve blocked and that was only done for quite extreme reasons.
@@CeeAreDee im honestly not enitirely sure. I don't post disrespectful stuff. Just the truth. Companies like LVC and LL Bean that sell stuff based on their former image at inflated prices is really bothersome to me as I live not far from where LL Bean used to manufacture their clothing and also 20 minutes from the Southwick clothing factory that just closed and it breaks my heart. I dont actually remember having any sort of disagreement with you directly.
Warehouse Eddie Bauer weather.
They do super good stuff. Have a gillet from them
Sheepskin is King, nothing close to it.
Yeah. I am with you!
Sheep skin is too ridiculous for the city 😂I don't want that people through stones to me 😮 because of the jacket 😅
Totally unnecessary..
Goto used clothes store & military surplus.. $100 goes along way in keeping you warm & still look good..
What a waste of money, its just fashion..
If down gets wet its useless!
True that. Good for layering under I guess
Nice!!! All I have to do is sell my soul to afford this rubbish... Jealous.
😂 it was my liver I sold. Couldn’t get enough for my soul.
I've purchased two sheepskin coats from that famous online auction website. Both coats were in excellent condition and have been lovely these past few winters and were under fifty quid each.
Would recommend to anyone who doesn't quite have the budget of a new jacket. Still get the classic style and helps to reduce waste a tiny bit. Win-win.
Synthetics use fossil fuels!
In the 1970s when L L bean had quality clothing, unlike now, they sold the Polar Parka, godd to minus 70 degrees. It blows away the sheepskin. Sorry leather lovers
