    What is the warmest winter jacket? Canada Goose. Really? Well, not really...I guess. However, there is no arguing that Canada Goose makes some of the best winter jackets in the entire world. Patagonia, North Face, Arc'teryx are of course all up there and all make amazing products -- but there is still some special sauce by Canada Goose that no one has copied. So today...we shall be taking a gander at the warmest down jacket in the world. The Snow Mantra.
    Maybe one day we'll review the Expedition, the Resolute, etc.
    *I guess you could say it's the warmest...but you could easily argue that it's not.
    Bye.
    Can I interest you in a hot bowl of following ME and The Snail in other places??

    *I promise I'll do another video on a lot of your suggestions but all of these jackets are like $2,000 so I need to wait a little bit 😅*
    Also I cut out a large section about why CG uses a lower fill down but a LOT of it, why they don't use a waterproof membrane, etc. and I'm realizing maybe I cut too much out of this vid! It's always a balance between time and info and I think I sliced too much -- okay BYE!
    *EDIT: I just reached out to all of these brands, hopefully they'll want to collab!*

      What jeans have you been wearing lately. I just got some kikko sashiko pants from N&F this week and I went a size down cause I generally size up to 32" but these also have 2% stretch so I can even do a 30 if I wanted to feel uncomfortable after eating. But this fabric is so dang comfortable. I may get them hemmed to my inseam tho. I don't really want to keep cuffing them. They look amazing un cuffed

    • @vilobike
      @vilobike 3 месяца назад +1

      @@hunk9891 my speculation would be that membranes will always de-laminate after a couple years especially of hard use. once you get into weather where everything is continuously frozen, i imagine water would be less of an issue especially whit some basic dwr.

      They are used by people who work for a living in very select occupations in very select environments for a huge amount of people who work in cold environments across the world. They are totally useless because they have very poor water resistance and coats pretty much the same in terms of keeping you warm, whilst being expensive don’t cost as much. Ok, an anecdote. These jackets were extremely popular in Sweden in the late 1990s early 2000s and so many of them were sold that rumor has it that someone in the owner's family flew over to Sweden to see how they were used in our wintry climate. It turned out that only the richest young people who went to the clubs in central Stockholm bought these jackets. So you can say that maybe they weren't used the way they intended.

    I worked in Antarctica (McMurdo) for a short time in the 2000s. My big red coat was great, I only started to feel slight chills at -30C or lower driving a skidoo into a headwind. Underneath I had thermals, waterproof wind pants/bib, and a fleece. Bunny boots on feet. Back home I have a North Face McMurdo, which I bought a while back for what seems now like good value. Way too warm for most trips out. As a result, I hardly wear it now 😂😂😂😂

    I used one of these for, I don't know, it must have been something like 7 years, it wasn't this exact model (looked the same but with a couple less pocket on the inside and without transparent pocket and reflective stripes) but it was definitely well made! But I think they are a little overrated, especially now that competitors have upped their game. I replaced it with another parka from Canadiens, much cheaper (even if still pretty expensive), but it feels as well made, and also the outside fabric is more plyable while still feeling as resistant.

    I don't go into those extreme cold environments, so that is quite an expensive jacket for most people to afford. Two winter jackets I own that have a much more reasonable price and perform well, is Utex Down Jacket with built in fleece lined hood and heavy duty outer shell (not sure if Utex are still made, but it is so good I would buy it used if I needed to replace it), I only wear a few times a year, when it is the most extreme cold temperature below 15 degrees Farenheit and high winds. And the Columbia Whirlibird IV Interchange Jacket (the inner down layer has silver reflective lining) and a waterproof shell. For both of those jackets I paid less then $200 each.

    I was torn between Canada Goose and the Feathered Friends Rock & Ice, went with the FF in the end as a previously owned CG (about 25 years ago) never draped very well and would pump cold air between the parka and me. Granted I probably had a size too big at the time, but even everything cinched down still didn’t seal me in.

      @AlexanderMason1 4 месяца назад +3

      The Feathered friends one uses a much higher fill power but is definitely not as warm. It is much lighter in weight though, which is the point since it is made for climbing, which is why they use a higher fill power down. To get the highest warmth to weight ration.

    • @88sstraight
      @88sstraight 4 месяца назад

      I didn’t specify which CG parka I was referring to, so how would you know it was warmer than the FF? What tells you that the CG is warmer? I owned the Expedition which had a fill power of 650. I feel the FF is warmer because it drapes better (also has 900 fill power), eliminating the cold spots that CG parkas can be subject to because of the rigid materials used in their construction.@@AlexanderMason1

      Many experts say that jacket must be 3-4 pounds to be in the warmest category . You own Canada Goose ( or something similar , very heavy , with down ) ? And summit elite alpine stuff ? Is it durable ? It would be such a pity destroy it , outer fabric seem fragile . Probably they use construction without stiching baffles etc , they fuse it with modern tech system so no cold spots .

      it makes perfect sense , it's made for elite alpinists , and up on Himalayas temperatures are like on parts of south pole ( not the coldest part thou )

    I bought it and... it's wonderful... not hot, not cold, perfect temperature !!! amazing technology... strangely it exists only in a big size... but who cares, it's so confortable.. even too big for me.

    Coyote fur is the best cold weather protection you can get for your face and lungs. The coyote lined hood acts as a prewarming area for the air that you bring into your lungs. This is critical under sub zero conditions. You can buy coyote fur on the internet.

      Bullshit. Layering is still the best option out there. Canada goose is good if you plan to loiter around or go for a ride in a snowmobile, even then a insulated overall is better. As soon as you do any kind of activity in that you sweat like a pig. There really is no argument for super insulated expensive jacket other than brand pride and feelings created by marketing. I don't even own a winter jacket, only a wool jacket and i experience -40c every winter.

    I own a Canada Goose Wyndham Jacket but it's made of 90% Duck Down and 10% Feather (no idea which bird though) and of course the infamous Coyote Trim Fur. So makes me wonder who its Canada Goose and not Canada Duck.

    Went into the Canada goose store last month and to see how bad the quality is! The stitching between the letters on the Canada goose badge is so cheap (the letters are linked and not individually stitched), you’d expect that from a really cheap brand not a brand where you’re spending over £2000
