Basic crochet baby hat/crochet for beginners

- This video will explain how to crochet basic hat. Following this crochet baby hat tutorial is very easy. Even crochet beginners can easily make this baby hat. This hat have four different size hat for new born babies, 0 to 3 month babies. 3 to 6 month & 6 to 12 month. Way I create this pattern will start with same number of double crochet & for all four different pattern you have to just change one round. I prefer the way you count the chain 3 at the end of the row rather than at the beginning as I had learned to do. It keeps the seam straight and smooth for a much nicer finish. You are an excellent instructor, very detailed and patient, and all of your work is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

How long should this be from top to bottom because I used the hook you used and d k yarn and my last normal row before the front post back posts only came to just under 3 and a half inches it looked so small I did an extra row, would increasing my hook size help? Or more rows or thicker yarn I crochet quite tight normally need to increase my hook size to get right gauge?
I’m using 2ply wool and I’m doubt whether it’s very thin and I want to know it will make up with ur measurements?

I’ve tried 4 times now, but I just don’t end up with a smooth round, I get up with a crinkly round as if I’ve done too many stitches even though I count them and they’re correct!

I am doing the hat 6-12 months. Row 5 I did 1,2,1,2,1,2, but when I reach 64 I still have 4 dc left, I don’t understand on the screen 6-12 - 3 & 4. This appears at 22.18 in the video.

I think row 5 should be 2 single dc then 2 dc in the same stitch? I haven’t made that size yet but it took me ages to work it all out so I’ve written myself instructions

It’s been a little while since I’ve crocheted a Beanie as I haven’t been able to sell any yet. Here’s my pattern, let me know if anything is unclear 😊
4 rows same for each size:
12 dc, ch3 2 dc each hole, ch3 1 single dc 2dc, ch3 2 single dc 2dc.
6-12months:
Row 5 is 2 single dc 2dc
Row 6-11 is all single dc
Last 3 rows will be whatever you fancy to make it pretty

New born 3 months, 6th rounds same altogether 9 rounds, new born 4 more rounds, 6 th round 11 rounds 12 months after 5 rounds 13 rounds . 3 months, 10 row, border on front post and 11 throw again one front and back post for 2 more rows. Total border is 3 rows and finish it off.
I tried this pattern, followed your instructions and it still comes out too wide, it does not taper down as yours, im using 4mm hook and #4 ,yarn.
This was my concern too. However, it’s a pretty hat and I’ll make more.

Yes! You can chain 5 and connect to make a loop! Then crochet your 12 into the loop! You may have to sew the little hole closed at the end of your hat though. Unless you add a ball on top. It's perfect for that. That's the way I was taught. I can't make the mystical magic loop either! 😁
