- The Volanate/Enganche combo has the potential of being a powerhouse on Football Manager. I was recently asked to explain that role on a livestream, so I decided to create a tactic on the fly using those roles with a national team I was managing.

I am a big Enganche fan as you can understand from my username. Actually i asked about a tactic with Enganche a few months ago too. Seeing my dear role work well made me very happy. Thanks a lot for video and also first person i thought before you say was also Riquelme

It's deceptive how good he is. Because he holds position he will most often stay marked and be used as a decoy by his runners, so it looks as if you're winning without him and he's being useless. The absurdly high mentals and passing over physicality are very much needed, because the AI will prefer to tight mark him. The few times the runners get his defender off of him he has to make the absolute most of it from the most dangerous position in the attacking midfield. Players that move more can get starved for space to play in, but he does better the more players there are around him. He thrives in tight spaces.
The best most fun tactic I was ever able to play was a tactic that had a Regista, Segundo Volante and an Enganche. With complete wing backs and 2 shadow strikers. I have no idea how I pulled it off but the goals score were fantastic.

Tried something similar to this when did a save in Argentina last year. Used a RPM with the vols
I'm gonna try this with one mezzala and one cm on attack, and maybe not inverted wing-backs. I'm playing a lower league save and I dare not be as attacking lol
Get an old player with high mentals and technique and it should work just fine. Lower league teams tend to be full of young players that need the leadership and mentoring anyway. 👍
I didn't make good use of the Engache before because I always go for possession heavy play once my team is strong enough in the league. The engache doesn't move a lot and is looking for runners , but in a system where the defense is eager to fall back and restricting space behind them and around the defensive midfield, the Engache doesn't have much he can do. He doesn't have the acceleration/work rate to make himself available in a packed midfield. Forwards in possession systems also do better when they drop down instead of pushing up. He needs runners and to get the most out of runners there needs to be a lot of free space in front and around the Enganche, which happens during counter attacking transitions. Not many people play on the counter, so the role is underused. He can also work during open play if you play more direct with two forwards pushing up, but not necessarily looking to go 1 vs 1 with their defender immediately like a TF or DLF on attack. For some reason when I try one AF/Poacher above an AMC it's never enough to make the defense stay up, but two attackers keep them pinned for good. The Engache in the video had both the attackers and midfielders starting far apart from him, giving him the maximum space available given his immobility.
* Something else that might work if you like to live on the edge is to do what De Zerbi and sometimes Arsenal do - build up slowly and from very deep in your half with a keeper that can pass. Very short passing, slower or very slow tempo. Draw out the press as deep as you can, then pass over it to the Enganche.
Can u explain why u went with iwb on a narrow system? No natural width right? Or ur depending on the vol with move into channels and the 2 strikers to Drift wide?
Would you recommend this in low league? I know sometimes you can find these ancient dudes with no pace and a bunch of mentals
The old dudes can work in any league as long as you build the rest of the team around them. if you have one, then, you need a team to accommodate a DLP or Enganche. Look at the roles in the video. They're all active roles that look to attack space. Even the Regista as a DLP type moves all over the field once the ball is progressed out of defense. The old dude's job will be to distribute from center into open space. You can also trigger move into channels for the ones that don't have it on by default.
How would u setup an engache with a back 3 system??
5-2-1-2 most likely.
Two Wide Center Backs one CD in center. If you're playing a low defensive line get a stopper who will move aggressively to win the ball low in the CDM area/win headers and start the counter. If you're pushing high, have a CD on cover in center to catch line breakers. Because you're playing three at the back and a stationary role like Enganche up top, you will need Wingbacks to get high, push forward and stretch play for him to have room in the center. You have to go with two strikers who both move into channels and push up, or else the stationary Enganche won't have enough room to pass from the center into the box. No Target Men/Poachers above. You have two people left for midfield. Even though most of your ball progression should come from the wings, you should have two roles that move vertically box to box to relieve the wings when closed down and redistribute from lower areas, because the Enganche won't - Box To Boxers/Volante. You have a back three at all times, you don't need either of the two to be staying back. They're better used making third man runs into the box to get any annoying CDM tightly marking your slow Enganche off of him.
You are most likely locking yourself in a counter attacking formation with the Enganche and defensive trio. If you still want him against low blocks and to keep the back three, you will need to change up the roles to ones that dribble less and keep the ball better. Then a Poacher/Target Man above might work better when you're all congested tightly together against the low block, and those Wingbacks become Fullbacks or Wide Midfielders.
