Perfect. Let's not forget that Angela Bofill has a degree in music and was trained to sing. She played the piano and viola too, and wrote music. Of course, she knew music theory and read notes, a professional musician through and through. Everything had to be just right. She's among the best singers of her time, and is one of my favorites. To complement the musician in Angela is her humanity - her great stage presence; that lovely, lovely face that recalls her Cuban and Puerto Rican heritage; and her beautiful soul.
Anyone can study music theory and learn to play instruments, etc. but at the end of the day it's a matter of having "it". Either you have it or you don't and she certainly had it.
I want to live one day of the eighties again, I would fill it with the music of Angela Bofill, Phyllis Hyman, Stephanie Mills, Jean Carne, Aretha, Whitney, Mariah, Dionne, Patti Austin and Labelle, Anita Baker, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Janet, Roberta Flack, Chaka Kahn, and of course, Luther. That is when music was music. Sadly, the millennials, will never see these people perform live and in their prime, and a lot of us have. "So who's zooming who?"
I get it, you are young, kidding. I listed how much I enjoy a lot of women's voices and that is what I liked about Luther's voice, it was honey toned and beautiful. I never thought about his power, but you are right. @@newera5238
My absolutely favorite jazz vocalist of the 1980s. Angela's gifts were remarkable. She would take your soul on a journey into the depth of the song. I kept this song on repeat for hours and never let go. Rest in peace, precious. You blessed us immensely.
I loved this song for decades and this is the first time I heard her sing it live. My eyes and mouth were wide open in awe of her flawless live rendition and her beauty.
Her voice was rich, powerful and clean. She had perfect pitch, octive and range. Almost unreal. Most artist have to lipsinc through a performance like this. There will never be another.
Imagine the difference for generations....teenagers growing up hearing songs like this compared to what teens have to grow up hearing today... This is high vibrational music at its finest
@Nupedebonaire07 talent in humans does not go away. Angela was a beautiful and talented woman but there are others who exist today that are also beautiful and talented. Don't let nostalgia close your mind. There is some awesome talent out here, seek it out.
Mostly all the music now is complete garbage with no real substance, meaning or originality. But Ms. Angela Bofill was definitely a brilliant gem and this is most definitely one of my most favorite songs by her and this was a excellent live rare performance she was so very stunning, beautiful and graceful she definitely was gifted from God above.
It has been confirmed that Ms. Angela Bofill, a gifted songwriter, soul and jazz vocal artist, has passed. Her composition, ‘I Try’ is a remarkable account of a sincere yet complex relationship with lyrics that pull at your heartstrings. Whenever I listen to ‘I Try’, I cry. Tears will flow…as they are right now remembering this beautiful woman. ❤️🩹🕊️
Angela had a concert at Zellerbach Hall on the U.C. Berkeley Campus back in 1982. For some strange reason, I brought my copy of her "Something About You" album with me to the concert. As others were filing out of the auditorium, at the conclusion of the show, my friend says to me, "Let's go meet her". I'm thinking to myself that we can't go backstage and meet a famous recording artist. Sure enough, we go backstage and met her and her producer, Narada Michael Walden. Apparently, I looked like someone that Narada knew and they let us stay long enough a brief conversation and for her to sign my album. Unbelievable experience for a 22 year old kid. She has always been my favorite female vocalist.
jahawk7 That was a very good experience to you, and very good memories for you! I also like her songs and I live in South Asia. Thanks for sharing! Sorry about the late comment.
😭 Sadly, it is confirmed that Angela Bofill passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the age of 70. May she Rest In Peace. Gone but not forgotten. 🙏💝😭
I was born in ‘75 so I never heard of this beautiful soul until today 😢, did they play her music on mainstream radio? I can’t help but think of the singer Vanity when I see her. RIP Angela Bofill
@@MarshaT.ZoeLiving - 👍Yes, she was popular. My mom & auntie’s played her music all of the time. You should research more of her music. She was a talented artist. May she rest in peace.😞
Just when I had started listening to more of Angela Bofill's songs after her unfortunate passing...and then I hear this vocal masterpiece! And then she breaks out SENSATIONAL "scat singing" that would make Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole proud! WHAT?! There was no vocal element she couldn't do! I'm even more in AWE of Angela Bofill! Her voice, so sultry, magical and a 3 1/2 octave range! Ironically, I saw Angela Bofill's episode of "Unsung" on June 23rd for the first time. I did a Google search, hoping to read good news about her recovery from two strokes and was saddened 😢 when I found out she passed away on June 13th. My heart 💔goes out to the Bofill family. Angela, "Your next home will be even sweeter!" Rest in Heaven, Angela! Your spirit, silky voice and musical legacy lives on! 🙏🏾💕♬🎤♬
Pulls at me every single time ! Dayum some 40 years later and this song Still hits me right there. How many failed loves have I sang this song to when it was finally over and I m alone in my little apartment sit n on my lumpy sofa on a sunny Saturday afternoon looking out the balcony smoking like a train and I can t move cause I might slip on my puddle of tears? Angela helped me get through some tough times. Correction, I should say God and Angela helped me. They threw me a life saver or two ... we GOT THROUGH ! ! She is a Bonita Puerto Rican who we all love ❤️
Cashflow Glo, you're just a hopeless romantic aren't you. I can picture you, just like I can picture the story in this song. Angela having this conversation with the man that thought a diamond was just a shiny rock.
She's singing about a man whom we would now recognize as having NPD, narcissist personality disorder unknown in the '80's but now seen as a plague of highly manipulative people in the love arena breaking hearts just to get attention. She describes this disorder exactly from the victims perspective. That said this was my favorite song as a teenager, she's so powerful and real.
Angela Bofill voice could get you in a positive mood jazzy and her classy sound incredible!! Thanks Ms.Bofill for sharing your timeless music and soulful voice ❤❤Richard Shackelford
I was 17 in 1980 and a rock and roll bass playing white kid. She changed that; the first two albums hooked me. Saw her several times in San Francisco and Berkeley and was blown away. This video brings it all back. She is and was a class unto herself. Beauty and art and craft and the female allure are the rarest of treasures. The likes of her do not come around often but when they do it a sight and sound to behold. I feel fortunate to have seen and listened when I did. It was life-changing.
I also saw her live several times at Kimball's East and Yoshi's. Her vocals and musicianship were in a class by themselves, and she very endearing with the audience.
between 2:05-2:40, she could have been lazy and let the music play, but being a true singer/artist, she chose to challenge the music and do a lil SCATTING.. u youngins don't know what u all been missing.. this is when music was REAL and had meaning
