How Bad Is Spirit Airlines?

  • Spirit gets a bad rap more often than not, so I set out to find out for myself just how bad it could possibly be on a flight from Newark to Pittsburgh. See for yourself.
NOTE: I had to remove a part of this video where I inadvertently made an erroneous statement regarding safety. Let it be known that Spirit has extremely high safety standards and has full FAA certification, meaning they meet or exceed all federal requirements. They have an exemplary safety record and have not had a single crash in their 30+ years of operation.

Flying Spirit is like flying on a bus. Ideally only travel with a backpack, sit in whatever seat is open, don't order any food or drinks and just expect a clean flight to your destination.

I took Spirit from Baltimore to Boston a few years ago. Everything seemed to be going good except the plane appeared to be completely full. We got delayed by something ( I never found out by what) for about 2 hours. Yes 2 hours in one of those seats. It felt I was sitting like plywood . The guy sitting next to me asked a flight attendant something about that he had a very important meeting in Boston and if we didn’t leave soon he would be late. We eventually did take off for about a one hour flight. During the flight, a woman near me spilled something on the floor. A flight attendant started being really rude with her. Spirit isn’t a luxury airline but that disrespect is way out there. Overall, I’ll spend a few dollars more and take another airline.

In 2020 I had a roundtrip flight from TPA-LAX (connecting in AUS on the way, and FLL on the way back). My flight leaving TPA was delayed repeatedly until the flight would not make the connection and the only option left was to drive 1.5 hours to fly out of MCO which I was forced to do. Then LAX-TPA (via FLL) was delayed repeatedly and when we finally arrived in FLL, I missed my connection by 5 minutes after racing through the airport (they did not bother holding the flight at all despite FLL being their main hub). There were no other flights that day or the next couple days and Spirit subsequently packed me and some fellow TPA bound passengers in a cramped van and drove us 4 hours. They refused to let me cancel the "flight" and offer me a refund, and our only compensation was a $10 meal voucher at the airport, enough for about 3/4 the cost of an overpriced airport meal.
So I booked a TPA-LAX itinerary and I never departed nor arrived into TPA, was forced to drive 5.5 hours, including a 4 hour cramped van ride when I paid for a flight, and was denied any meaningful compensation. Suffice to say that was and will remain the last time I ever flew with Spirit. It is a complete joke of an airline

Labor Day weekend 2019 we did a flight from Cleveland (CLE) to New Orleans (MSY) on Spirit Airlines. And getting to New Orleans was an absolute nightmare. We had a scheduled stop over in Dallas (DFW) But the 1st part of the trip was delayed because a bad weather and then we got Deverted to Austin and had to sit for 5 hours just to get back to (DFW) once we got there they canceled the 2nd leg from there to MSY so we were forced to rent a car and drive the rest of the way 500 miles 8 more hours. Not mention the $300 charge for the one way drop off. I was hoping they'll reimburse me but nope all we got was a $50 coupon... Never again with Spirit........ Go Delta ✈️

Even then, ask yourself if you would pay an extra $20 for a better seat and some amenities...
I booked a ticket with American round trip from Texas to Florida and it was over $140 but hey, you got snacks and a drink both ways and the seats could recline. And the price wasn't shabby since the flight was PACKED. The pilot begged people to put their luggage in immediately and sit down because it was a full flight both ways. I have no Idea what the others were charging because I seriously wonder if AA was fighting competition with scheduling. For some reason, they were one of only two "big name" brands that agreed to fly the 7am-3pm time slot for that day in the very first week of 2020. I was shocked by how slow air traffic heading east would be. It was like their rivals said "Not worth it, I'm going to sleep!" I have no idea why so few choices were available. I guess their rivals were too busy flying people away from Florida since it marked the end of the holiday season. I booked the flight because I wanted to take a winter vacation at Universal and the after-Xmas prices were irresistible.

I'd be able to stomach at most a 90-minute flight on Spirit. If they save me $40-50 over a rival airline, I'd book a trip with them. As long as it's a safe airline, that matters a little more than a reclining seat. But yes, like he mentioned, the seat design is a mixed bag. I'd father have space for my big fat head than be able to lean back a bit. I'm used to sitting straight up for long periods of time so this wouldn't bug me much.

Many airlines across the UK and Europe adopted this approach many years ago, even before the pandemic, including British Airways, who are not even British anymore. You buy what you
need, its that simple. Ryanair are the biggest airline in Europe and offer great prices at low cost, if booked in advance, Wizzair are also a big airline. These days, you get what you pay for.
Buy a British Airways Business Class seat in Europe, then you get the same sized seat as an economy passenger and get a cold meal with a hot or cold drink. Simple!
British Airways in Europe are now a budget airline, its that simple.

Spirit is only "cheap" if you travel "naked". Bring anything and the price goes up. Bring a carry on, computer, 2 suitcases, take a different carrier for a better price. I have heard a lot more complaints than compliments about this sleezy "airline". IF it were not for "faa requirements", you might be sitting on a wooden bench, with a seat belt (rope) being optional. The bottom line: "the airline of last resort" when you can't find a better one. Fly safely and have a great day!!!

Not worth it folks !Jet Blue has the most leg room of all the carriers for coach and since they charge a little more it is totally worth it since you don't get the lower class garbage people and you get some piece and quiet and you can stretch out , If Jet blue winds up buying Spirit they will strip those planes and use the same leg room parameters that they use on every Jet Blue Flight ! As a businessman that travels regularly i have been on pretty much every airline and now our Company and other Sales techs use jet blue exclusively !
