Underwater plants work wonders to clear and improve pond water as well. Not sure what David would recommend, but if the islands do not do the trick, consider adding some manageable pockets of underwater plants.
Entertaining video folks, thank you. On the Algae query - they are organisms that live mainly in the water and make their food through photosynthesis. Algae are different from plants in that they have no true leaves, roots, or stems. Seaweeds are algae. "Algae" is a plural noun; the singular form is "alga."
With all of the awful news lately, it’s nice to be excited to see this project go! Cannot wait to see the finished product and to hear Luke exclaim “that’s not relevant” again. Thank you for the laughs and wonder.
So exciting to see David on your channel He is a master of building natural pools, which is going to make the magnificent pool at Mapperton even more beautiful. So much better for the environment, useful for nature all year round and so much safer for humans to enjoy as an added bonus. Looking forward to see how this project develops.
This guy is the answer to your prayers. I am looking forward to seeing how he problem solves this in upcoming episodes. P.S. I loved how the cat was busy cleaning himself (allogrooming) on camera while you all were chatting in the pool. He's so nonchalant. The pool is not his problem. Also, as a patron I am looking forward to receiving the "dish-cloth". lol
9:30 "we thought we needed to bring up the level of professionalism at Mapperton, just a notch" as the cat, like a heckler in the balcony above, says "here's some professionalism for ya hoomans!"😊
David is wonderful. He's so interesting. I didn't know a pool could be safe without chemicals. This is terrific news. The new picture is gorgeous!! Very romantic.Love from Vermont
I just love your enthusiasm Julie! You & Luke are so well suited & balance each other out 😂 So happy to be seeing the pool repairs coming along. David seems like such a knowledgeable, capable fellow, i can’t wait to see the progress & the plant beds once they’re done & as a side note, isn’t his hair fabulous?
Loved this episode, but I wanted to hear more from David. He's fascinating on many levels and it keeps content fresh and interesting. Some guests are just too dry, but this guy, wow!! 👍
If I may say; it would balance well to have two longitudinal rows of David's floating plants, both from an aesthetic and practical (swimming) viewpoint. It would define the swimming area to the centre, and would be lovely swimming "through" a garden. Also I would build the submerged garden filtration beds at each end of the pool. I know its expensive , but would look fabulous and of course be beneficial for the eco-pool.
How wonderful that you will be able to keep this lovely historic pool working and useable once more!! Wonderful seeing you all banter about. Well done for thinking outside of the box!
Interested in the pool conversion to organic islands of plants. Beautiful concept for the garden too. The Mapperton illustration is also beautiful. She did great job on it. Uplifting and lived-in and a beautiful hilly setting. Thank you for interesting vlog content, Luke and Julie. Luke is educated, calm and rightly British while Julie is competitive, American and high energy. Great video partners.😊👋🏼💕
Hi Julie and Luke as a Patreon member I am supporting your efforts! I'll most likely not make it to England but it's nice to be involved in your work to continue English Mapperton legacy!!
Design idea! The water trying to flow into the pool from the raised area of the garden surround might be seen as an opportunity to link the pool to a natural water system. You could add, on the upstream side, a series of basins spilling into each other, so as to let the water naturally aerate as it flows down into the pool. These basins could be populated with plants that would filter the water, taking out some of the potassium (which plants like to have to grow.) These don't have to be huge basins, but could be a number of small ones, with little apertures to create an aerating jet, or a wide mouth allowing a gentle flow. Think Villa d'Este 's 100 fountains, scaled down. If you block the cracks as you are now doing, the accumulated water pressure will act as a force against the wall of the pool, and add damage over time to what has already happened. So really, the ornamental basins and spills or jets would be a savings, over time. Other idea (kinda obvious): look about upstream and see whether some source of fertilizer is contributing to the water quality and giving the algae something on which to live. Lawns? Livestock?
5:34 Thanks Luke... "just in time to see the pike kind of heading for you..." as I sip a potently strong ginger beer. That left a mark in my nasal cavity I think. LOL!
Your pool expert is definitely up to Mapperton standards of personality and "eccentricity" but of course I see he knows his stuff. I might have a look on RUclips for him. I love those natural swimming pools. I think to transform your long canal formal pool to one of those would be a good 21st century addition to your centuries old home. A cold water outside dip would not invigorate me. It would send me right back to bed to recover! It'll be enjoyable to watch the work progress.
I have been following David Pagan Butler for years on YT. He’s a hero up there with David Attenborough… One day I tell myself I will have my own natural swimming pond. So glad you have got him on board. Yay 🙌🙌🙌
GREAT episode. David is so interesting. He does however remind me of actor Christopher lloyd from the movie "Back to the Future". He clearly knows what he's doing. Can't wait to see the results.
Put a heater in, America most new pools are all salt water no chemicals. Just throw a bag of 40lbs of salt in. I live in NW Pennsylvania near Lake Erie. I keep my salt water pool open from end of April til first of Nov. I do use a heater.
And another idea: consider installing a drainage system above the wall, just as one would normally do when building a retaining wall. A perf pipe would be installed below grade, wrapped in drain rock and filter fabric, somewhere at least a few feet below the surface. The pipe directs the water to where it is wanted, rather than accumulating behind the wall of the pool and having to find its own way. If there is no natural water course nearby for the water to join, it could be directed underground through a series of dry wells, also underground. (Note that the only situation in which this is not a good idea is one of construction on hilly slopes with a layer of clay.)
A possible suggestion would be a central large floating island with a large scale fountain. It will help aerate the water, introduce different types of plants, give bubbles into the water with surface oxygen, and valuable movement. I know this is a feature that is used at Biltmore and they do not deal with hardly any algae. I've seen that they have water lilies, fountain features, floating islands, Birds of Paradise plants, and certain fish within their pools.
Really interesting to learn about how to achieve naturally clean and healthy pools, instead of chlorinated or slimy ones - looking forward to seeing the results:-)) We swim with crabs and other critters in the sea, so why not fresh water pools too:-)
I am so glad I found this channel. very interesting. I just saw it today..and I hope to see a video of the inside of the house as well. I love historical manors. can you explain the difference between a natural pond and a natural pool like this?
Hiya. I've always worked on the basis that one does the washing-up with a Dish Cloth and the drying-up with a Tea Towel, assuming the items aren't left to air dry as in a commercial kitchen. Stay safe. All the best to you.
Never laughed so hard with the subtitles on here you said...if your are not a patron at Mapperton live, ,it typed out if you are not a patron at Mafia live lol Eileen Meenagh
I don't know what your budgetary and preservationist limitations on this project are but after the leaks are patched, if there's a British equivalent of Rhino Liner that could be applied below the waterline, you'd have a durable watertight layer that might even strengthen the pool walls (I mean, I've seen a test where it was used to bombproof a building). And it's black, so it would make the pool more reflective too. edit: Oh wait... possible toxicity... never mind. shouldn't be out here commenting on a Saturday night.

Laughin at the cat grooming its hooha, whilest you're involved in conversation in the pool 😄
I was thinking the SAME thing!! I had to replay because I was not listening to the speakers. I was too focused on the kitty! Beautiful cat...
Saw that too and😊🤭😁
Yup, cats do that, don't they! Master Attention Diverters!
😂🤣 but cat looks well fed, no mice left

I’m so thrilled. I love his natural swimming ponds. Can’t wait to see the outcome.
Have been waiting quite awhile. Happy to see that it is going to be repaired. Water features are always a lovely part of the gardens.
I love that your beautiful cat is following you around, discreetly watching the action. Well, she was discreet until she started bathing.

I love the cute floof supervising the humans, from his position above them 🐱❤️
The energy from these guys, weekly is just so uplifting and positive
A great video, but I really loved the cat in the background giving itself a bath. Adorable.
Julie is such a asset to this wonderful home, love the banter between them.

I am sooo happy that you invited David Pagan Butler! Hopefully the pool turns out nicely. What a swim it will be!
I liked Julie's story of using the pool every day during lock down and it being a cold water immersion thing.

I love that the cat is having a pretty thorough washing session in the background .😂😂
The cat got bored with the discussion! He bathed himself and walked away. 😂 I love all the animals you have around there.
The great pool, this is the part of Manor that I am emotionally attached to ! 😂
Yay 😀 me too!
Loved this episode, but I wanted to hear more from David. He's fascinating on many levels and it keeps content fresh and interesting. Some guests are just too dry, but this guy, wow!! 👍
He will have an episode on his channel! ruclips.net/user/davidpaganbutler
Pagan is definitely giving off a Doc Brown[Back to the Future] vibe. Love it.
Love the new watercolor! Very well done!
Julie, the only answer to "what do we do next?" is "put the kettle on". :-)
The cat is definitely the unsung hero of this video!
How inspired, getting David to come and consult. I love his projects. What a great combination. Thank you for sharing this.

Who knew I would find this absolutely FASCINATING??!! My goodness I wish I could be involved in it!!
Anybody else feeling the pool gent is channeling Back to the Future?
Yes, Christopher Lloyd, love it!! 😆
Lovely picture of Mapperton!!!!!
Again, the music is perfectI would adjust volume down though to have speaking voices a bit louder .
This pool guy is hilarious.
Show him Elizabeth's bath! He's onsite and have him check it out and give his thoughts
Thanks!
Thank you!
Love this pool guy-great style! I am entranced by the cat's grooming tutorial going on above them! It's like a youtube within a youtube!
What an absolute character this David is.

Love watching you two hope it all goes swimmingly for you two ❤
David is Martha Stewart after a night of partying 🤣
I got a chuckle out of that! 😂
So glad you have the excitement gene, you go girl!!
He’s the Doc Brown of ponds.
Very excited about the pool project! Love the organic pools.
Does DPB give anyone else Doc Brown in Back to the Future vibes? (in the best way of course)
I'm glad you included your mother in the design. I know they turned management to you, but it was their home so long

Can’t go in the garden without the cats coming around! Love them.
You have a cat who keeps shutter bombing your filming- so cute
I have seen david's work... he's gonna make your pool gorgeous!! I hope you got to enjoy it this summer
I really love your energy and enthusiasm ❤
I am so happy the pool has a solution!! Its going to look GORGEOUS!!

David's liverpool accent is wonderful. Riveting viewing 👍
Your cat is such a ham! 🌺
Perfectly staged ‘wash your behind’ while the humans are being serious about the pool 😹
She's thinking, I'm ready to use pool as liter box
Two of my RUclips subscriptions colliding - love it.

No fountain if you plan to swim in it, you want the space for swimming.
@@gerriebell2128 The pool is enormous, way larger than a typical swimming pool. It would handle a fountain and keep the water moving.
Another great episode. I am getting very excited about the pool! Can't wait.
Very interesting solutions! I love the watercolour too!
The print is gorgeous!
I loved your cat! I laughed so much! Beautiful watercolor!
The cat bathing in the background made me laugh!
Hope this works for you. In Minneapolis we have a local pool that is filtered by plants. It's the most beautiful pool.
And it's been closed more years than it's been open to the public. From a north sider.
I love, Love, LOVE ❤️ the yellow coveralls!!!
Again , another wonderful episode. It would have been nice to have seen some of David's work, that is examples of what he had created at other pools.
