- Installing a new culvert pipe where a future driveway is going on a new home site. The customer had the pipe delivered to the site so I just had to dig and install it. The county requires that you use a steel culvert instead of plastic. This is only the second time I have messed with these flares on the end of the pipe. They are a bit of a pain, I'm sure there is an easier way to install just need to figure that out. It's definitely going to need some more rock over and behind the pipe. The installation looked great, well done.
Those "end pieces" are known as (Metal) Flared End Sections (FES). They install easily when done with all pieces laid in correct positions/location before trying to tie the band on the FES's......and if a large crew is available...lol.

The purpose of them is to prevent erosion under the pipe and the sides ..

exactly 1 year later I started watching this and you mentioned the quarry will be closing for Memorial Day. I had to do a double take because that's where I'm headed next!

I made a socket for putting those pipes together. Cut the socket in half the weld each end on a pipe of similar size 10 inches long. Has saved me a ton of time including less busted fingers and bad attitude. 😂

I always use a ratchet wrench or when banding 2 culverts together I have an extra deep socket that I made with a piece of pipe and some harbor freight impact sockets welded together. Pair that with a cordless impact and it makes quick work of it.
Yeah that’s a great idea! I had a deep socket just not deep enough lol. The homeowner had the pipe delivered I wish I would have known about those ends before I got there lol. Appreciate you watching

when we did culverts we would take a deep socket cut it add a piece of pipe weld back together and have a really ddep socket

Perhaps the next time you have a job on a road, park your dump truck so traffic meets it first, the dump truck is sturdy, you and your mini-execavator aren't, use the dump truck to protect yourself, bad drivers and bad accidents happen everyday. Stay safe.

Sounds like you are about as sick of the rain as I am.
We had a storm come through on Tuesday that with 70mph winds that literally blew down a bunch of trees around me while I was working. Thank goodness they all missed me.
Today I moved to the next job and pulled my pickup in the driveway and there I sat stuck. LOL!!😀😀
Maybe it will dry up some time soon.

@@richhoops2413 we had the culvert put in and the way it was explained to us here in Missouri was our first culvert was provided by our county…we just had to pay our mayor to put it in. The town is so small that our mayor also does earth moving. We have been here about a year now and we want a second driveway. We will have to pay for that one but haven’t checked on pricing. We paid our guy $800 for the culvert, the work and all the gravel which ended up lining our driveway.

i thought u lay rocks underneath first then lay the culvert, then add rocks on top
I lay them right on the ground so water can’t flow under the culvert in the rock.

Need for city permits for that kind of thing I'm out in the country living with foam hoses and planning on doing the same thing adding a secondary driveway.
The state gives them a permit since it’s outside the city limits. I enjoy these projects

What is this piece of equipment called he is using? Is this sufficient for packing the gravel?
It’s an excavator and it packed the gravel down good enough for them to start using the driveway
I was hopping you had to do it the same way we do here in santa rosa county florida. the county puts a mark in the road and tells you how high each end has to be. when they inspect it if its not right you have to dig it up and do it again. I assume I have to use some kind of survey equipment.
Yep that’s pretty much what they do here. You have to build it to their specs

The town I live in requests that you use metal pipes. They say it’s so they can find them in the winter to steam them if the ice clogs them up. I just lay a piece of rebar in the excavation with the plastic pipe.
Your pipe flairs. We use the term Wing Walls. We used to wear flairs in the 70's with platform shoes and paisley shirts.

on those bolts for the bands we use a deep socket and a inpact gun. once it bottoms out cut the bolt off bottom it out again cut it off and bottom it out one last time. should have placed stone under the pipe now the moist ground will have the pipe rotted out in 15 years. did you put a leave on the pipe to make sure you had pitch to the low side for water travel?
Yeah I’ve made a socket for it now. And yes I check it with a level to get the correct fall
county must have partial ownership of the pipe factory.

Don't you just love white rattle can paint? I mean, you find some construction signs somewhere by the side of the road at another project, you take them home and one rattle can with white 'cover-up' spray paint later, no names to be found on them anywhere and they are now yours. ;)

Just curious I'm am a inspector for roadway and bridge construction. Are you not required to compact each lift of 6" or is this not required because it's private?
No you don’t have too on these drives especially ones out in the county. They don’t have any requirements on them it’s kind of crazy

Nice video. I have to do this to widen my driveway at the road. Can you give me an idea of what an apppoximate 30' wide section would cost? Removal of old galvanized tile and install new - widening by about 14 feet. Thanks!
Thank you! That really depends on what pipe you are planning using and what size. Also what the rock costs or how much you will need. 30’ pipe could be anywhere from $600-$1500 the rock my be $1000 and labor may be $1800-$3000

How much it cost to replace the culvert on a driveway ? 22 feet long
Hard to say lots of variables to think of. What diameter is the new pipe? Plastic? Metal? Or concrete? What utilities are in the area? How much material to haul off? How much to bring in? Is the driveway base rock, concrete or asphalt? It’s tough to price stuff without seeing it.

I think 20 or 30 I can haul 10 yards at a time I think I ended up with 3 loads
might wanna get a plate compactor so you can pack it easy.
I got one at the shop I just didn’t bring it with only getting one load of rock on it

I like the plastic myself don’t have to worry about them rusting. The county still requires metal on these is the only reason I put it in

I would like to do a similar job on my property but I'm worried as heck about the road surface. what happens if you damage it? that was pretty brave rolling your truck and the excavator all around on the road like that does the county care? also did you have to get permits and everything for this kind of job since it's on private property? I'm assuming.
It would take a lot to damage the road steel tracks. And no I didn’t have to get any permits. The landowner hired me to do it

It really depends on the size of pipe and how much rock. I think this one was $2700 installed if I remember right

@@jtecheira304 you can it depends on the ground our soil is very rocky. In the softer areas I use 3” base or 3” minus then topcoat in 57’s

No just have to follow the depth of the ditch

Keeps the sides of the pipe from washing out and cuts down on erosion
Hi there! What kind of box culvert or pipe should I use for a culvert that can passage 40, maybe 50 ton trucks?
It really doesn’t matter what pipe you use the biggest thing is getting a good amount of coverage over it. If the trucks are that heavy you would want about 12”-16” of coverage at least. And be sure to pack it good around the pipe so it doesn’t settle

Maybe a backhoe if you need to dig much. The bobcat is easier to grade though

Yep same here, I heard after I was done they had to replace 6 miles of that road because it was just unusable
Would have been more accurate if someone would have had a video outside of the cabin that way we could clearly see what you were doing it's a little rough sitting up in the cabin with you just kind of listening at you spouting off we really can't see the correct angle got the video I'm going to try to hang in here and see what else back to the study wow kind of a bummer you can't see it outside the cab
