    *Shout out for two other Homesteading Channels at end of video.
    A quick video on how I installed a culvert and driveway on our property across the street from our cabin where the greenhouse is. The project was done with hand tools only and I also used broken concrete that we had saved from a patio removal that we did in Seattle.
    *We did a quick shout out at the end of the video for two Homesteading channels that we enjoy. Please check them out and subscribe. Thank you.

    Almost Homestead refers to our unconventional approach to homesteading on three separate small properties and working with what we have. It also refers to the fact that this is not our ideal Homestead situation but almost. In the future we hope to purchase another Homestead with more land... all together on one property. Our goal is to share our journey and inspire others that might be thinking about living a more self sustainable lifestyle. Follow along as we build, repair, reuse, scrounge for materials, plant, forage, explore, eat, drink, and share what we are doing to make this dream a reality.

    • @AlmostHomestead

      I'm glad it was helpful. The used broken concrete wall has held up very well to water pressure from the heavy rains sending a torrent of water down the ditch. And the driveway has remained stable so it all worked out nicely. Compaction around the pipe and throughout the whole build really is the key. Good luck you guys!

    I watched another vid and they put a large sheet of the landscape fabric over the pipe instead of under it and wondering which is correct. nicely done video .

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  5 лет назад +1

      I don't know if it was even necessary since the pipe did not have any perforated slits in it. My thought was to lay it over the bottom layer of gravel to keep that base layer of gravel from being infiltrated with dirt and mud from water seepage over time. But again, maybe not an issue. Here is a link to an ADS Pipe installation video that might be helpful. They don't use any fabric/cloth. Thanks for watching! ruclips.net/video/r817BfCtRGU/видео.html

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  5 месяцев назад

      I should have kept better track of costs. It's been 5 years but I'm guessing (rough guess) somewhere around $1100 total. Two culvert pipes, 1 coupler, two loads of gravel, delivery fees, ground cloth, a few bags of concrete. Delivery fee was only around $100. Our road maintenance guy hooked me up with his driver. The concrete was free. The culvert pipe has probably doubled in price since I did this project.

  • @ImaginaryHouse
    @ImaginaryHouse 5 лет назад

    Looks great! Love your work. What type of weight can cross this type of setup, any idea? I have a couple similar that I’m needing to do to reach my cabin build site and ideally would like to get a cement truck back there at least once for the simple foundation! Thanks man

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate it. I'm really not sure about the weight limit for the driveway. I think with all of the broken concrete chunks and all of the compacting of the gravel that I did it could withstand the weight of a cement truck if our driveway was flat. There is no way a cement truck could angle in and up our little driveway though. He would probably start digging in with the wheels if he could make the tight turn. I back our Xterra up the driveway and if going too slow I start to dig into the gravel a bit with my tires. From what I found on the subject, compaction is a key element to the pipe not collapsing under a heavy load. I compacted at several different stages...dirt in the ditch, first layer of gravel, gravel on top of concrete chunks, and then continued to compact every time that I laid down a few more inches of gravel. I didn't want to have to redo that thing after so much work. Hopefully this helps. Good luck!

      Definitely need to do that still. Especially on the exit side. The hill side below our Greenhouse is showing signs of erosion. I was looking at it yesterday and trying to decide if I want to use more broken concrete. I have a place where I can get as much as I need. Thanks Paul!

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  4 года назад

      Thank you. I went with the size of another culvert pipe a few lots up. And I also considered what I had observed in that ditch during heavy rains. We had extreme rain up here a month ago and it held up during that. I would say, go a little bigger then what you think you should, to make sure it can handle some extreme weather event. Hope that helps.
