He also upped his slow mo game ever since he first collaborated with Gav and Dan. He didn't just get a high speed camera either Scott also experiments more with targets to get cool slow mo effects and I love it.

I was going to make the same comment. I love his videos and his characters but it's a nice change of pace to see him out of character. He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to ballistics.

As someone who knows nothing about guns, I still appreciate how Scott shows the camera the diameter of the barrel without pointing it at the camera. That's such a good way to demonstrate respect for firearms.
That’s what you’re supposed to do. You see professionals and really anyone who knows basic gun safety doing it. The only people who’d point the barrel straight at a cameraman, is an amateur and knows very little about the safety aspect

@@raybandolphin3820 I know, I just appreciate how automatic it was to him. He knew it was empty, he knew his finger wasn't on the trigger, and he still made sure it wasn't pointed at anybody.
It would be tempting (to a non-pro) to point it straight at the camera to say "lookit how huge this is". But because he's a pro, he didn't do that. That just makes me respect him more.

It's called a stopping rifle, and was used exclusively in emergencies when the hunting party was being charged by large game animals.
Imagine having to lift and aim a 20lb gun to shoot on target in the few seconds of warning that you have to stop a charging elephant. I guess on the plus side you have the rest of your life to figure it out.
@@user-yu8ur9yi9e The great thing about elephants is that they are both very big and also very loud when angry or agitated so you have a lot of time to spot them and get the rifle ready before they get to you. They aren't cheetahs hiding in the grass or in trees, preparing to ambush you and getting to top speed in the first few steps.

I've been begging for something like this for over two years now.
You could literally make special effects shots for movies that are 100% practical and not CGI.
9:57 200,000FPS is Gav's equivalent to a 4 bore. The slow motion your cell phone can do is like a BB gun. The slow motion a nice camera can do is like the 30-06. Gavs like, "I got my own elephant gun called a Phantom and it shoots 200,000FPS."
It could go much higher.
There is a video somewhere on YT where somebody talked about filming a lightning strike. The strike itself lasted only about a tenth of a second. The camera had been cranked up all the way so the resulting video took over 60 hours for the entire event to be over.
One-tenth of a second got stretched to two-and-a-half days.

I've seen bigger guys taking that gun worse, I think the instruction to move with the recoil instead of trying to block it helped him a lot.

Scott is all about fun and monkeying around, but he respects the domains of others. Slow Mo Guys is a fun channel, but it's also a lot more technical than his.
By contrast, Dan and Gav are even more rambunctious than usual in KB.
Yeah he is a cool guy and I love when he is on other channels, but I simply cannot watch his videos they seem to target the young brainrot audiences.
@@korg47237 Well, he is running a family-oriented channel so there's only so many directions you can take your humor and content. I agree that a lot of it can be painful juvenile, but some of his more serious videos are well worth watching.
When his brand of humor sticks though, it hits hard. Every Kentucky Roulette episode is comedy gold.

I'm surprised that after the fact stated at 13:15, Dan says "I didn't know that". He's always so knowledgeable about this stuff! The fact that gun makes the round spinning also makes the gun spin in the opposite direction was not something I knew and I thought "wow, that makes sense actually" and I felt a connection to Dan. Thanks for a great and fun learning experience!
Admitting that he doesn't know something - earns him even more respect in my book.
I think it's more the matter that Dan was so used to firing smaller caliber even if it's big as the 30-06 that handling such recoil is no issue (or maybe compared to the 4 Bore, it's minuscule) that the huge rifle diameter jump makes the effect far more apparent than expected, and I can imagine any other firearm expert who might have more experience than Dan still heavily underestimate the amount of torque from the rifling of firing a 4 Bore.

I think he got that gun after Dan and Gav had already been gone for a while, as Scott posted his part of the collab three weeks before the Solothurn video. It has just taken Gav longer to get this video out it seems.

Can't wait. Kentucky Ballistics is such a good time for slow mo videos. No wonder Scott is so jacked too if he shoots guns like that regularly, you will have heck of an incentive to adapt. And he manages to teach all kinds of unique bits about guns. Even if I have watched some gun content and mechanics for years, he does get to surprise me.
The 4 bore through the gel was one of the coolest things I've seen in a while. I'm grateful these guys are using their talents for good.

cool moment at 4:11, go frame by frame when Dan fires, and you can see the rolling shutter of the camera capture the smoke plume's shadow before it is captured coming out of the barrel! Must be a Right to Left roll ;)

I love these collabs with Scott, because, sure, he is an absolute tank unit of a person, but is also super fascinated and nerdy about the science and discovery of high energy, high speed projectiles. I audibly gasped when that 4-bore round squished into a fatter disc as it hit the steel instead of fragmenting immediately. In general I think I know how materials will behave but these guys are so good at getting amazing, beautiful footage that defies my expectations.

Stuff like this is why I love this channel, seeing all the neat little things happening in slow motion we'd never realize at full speed. The flash in the gel from last time, the wadding perfectly staying in the vacuum of the 4 Bore round in this one, etc. I've loved all the assorted collabs you've done with different channels like How Ridiculous, but seeing Scott's crazy gun collection in slow motion is next level stuff.
I love how Scott is really calm and scientific in the collabs, it feels like he's just another one of them. I can't wait to see the JDJ out next!

Man, that rifiling, I never even thought of that! It makes perfect sense, every action has an equal and opposite reaction, of course the rifiling twists the gun in your hands as the gun twists the bullet.

Not just for the slow-mo stuff, which would be amazing (like an entire line of people emptying magazines at the same time), but also so you can really dip your feet into the different types of guns there are and how they each have different effects that can be seen in super slow-motion.

I'm impressed by how Dan handled the recoil of the 4-bore. As an aside, the sound of it firing at 4:11 sounded (to me anyway) exactly like the sound effect of gunfire used in older tv shows.

12:56 I'm surprised how apparent the rifiling of the barrel affect the recoil of the gun as I never thought that Newton's 3rd Law of Motion (any action has an equal and opposite reaction) applies to angular momentum/torque as well, seeing the gun roll to the opposite direction of the bullet
There's actually an entire family of systems that use this effect to steer rockets, drones and satellites more prescisely. They're called "reaction wheels".
