I think some people are confused, this 4Runner has separate issues, the oil burning is from old age and poor maintenance. The ECM problem is making the engine management system act up so the engine wasn’t running correctly with unburned fuel going into the exhaust and smoking. But it only smoked once every few weeks and when it did act up the engine misfired but the engine computer did not store any misfire codes showing that the computer is most likely bad. ⬇️Scotty’s Top DIY Tools: 1. God bless you Scotty. Its such a rare thing to find such an honest mechanic. Fortunately for me I have an old family friend whose just as honest a mechanic as you are.
Ethical. I had a no start issue on my on S10 pickup. Tech said I needed a fuel pump and maybe a distributor. I tapped on the fuel filter with a mallet. Started right up. Got a fuel filter for $17 and still driving. I wish Scotty lived near me.
Scotty you should have gone further with your disgnostics! The C1201 sets just to turn on the ABS light. At least show us the oxygen sensor data to confirm your overfueling theory... Most likely just needs 4 OEM Denso oxygen sensors 👍😉
Scotty The C1201 code is the one that tells the vehicle to turn on the check engine light and disable the traction and VSC. Basically, when the other two codes pop up, this one is in charge of letting you know there’s a problem. Fixing the other codes should also fix this one since they’re the ones that caused it. I see this code on almost every vehicle in the dealership shop I work for. Everytime you repair the other code(s) C1201 will go away. In your case that 4Runner needing cats won’t fix its oil consumption problem. Neither would a computer. I hope this helps a bit. Being a mechanic as we both are, you learn new things everyday and I appreciate your videos spreading around a lot of good information 👍🏻
So you're saying there's a problem with the traction/VSC? There are no other codes so why would you "repair the other codes" to clear the C1201? "Everytime you repair the other code(s) C1201 will go away". How do you "repair" the other (non-existent) codes? What does the dealership charge for this "repair"?
There is nothing wrong with the computer. The ABS computer stores that C1201 code because there is a malfunction in the engine computer. If you fix the codes stored in the engine computer, the C1201 code will go away.

problem is, the cats are no doubt covered in oil and carbon. and the vehicle won't pass emissions inspection if it's newer than a 94 in most counties in Texas
We went to two mechanics. They both said, "it's probably the ECU/ECM". Not convinced, I tried to take a stab at diagnosing the engine code myself, a misfire. Looked up a bit on missfires and learned about the how the engine works. I switched everything around to see where I would get a change in the code. Changed my injectors to different positions and lo and behold, it was the injector. Got a new one, installed it myself, and now our 2006 scion xB runs just fine. Really makes you appreciate Scotty's advice on really putting your thinking hat on when it comes to dealing with some mechanics.
Please don’t just let it sit like that, the cat will be damaged with unburnt oil by the time you figure out the problem. Based on the symptoms you described, the problem is either the camshaft position sensors or the O2 sensors. The engine was put on limp mode triggering the traction control code, which made most mechanics speculate that the ECM is bad.
Mine is 2003 model, still going strong, the only thing I’ve replaced was alternator, set of spark plugs once, radiator hoses, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, they’re mostly preventative maintenance and 3 set of tires since 2003. My brother in laws Honda Pilot, same model year, gave up on him 2 years ago.
I love your Toyota videos. I have a 2010 Toyota RAV4 4 cyl. It has 118,000 miles, and so far the check engine light has never come on (knock on wood). A far cry from my previous car, a 2005 Kia Optima LX 4 cyl. which had it’s engine computer catastrophically die at 132,000 miles, but had PLENTY of problems before that!
I have a 2007 Toyota Yaris with a check engine light on. It's been on for 120,000 miles of the 240,000 miles it has on it. As long as it sounds normal and isn't smoking or leaking anything I drive on. All my fluids are full. It' s a software issue. I even had it at a Toyota dealer for the airbag recall and I didn't hear a peep out of them for my check engine light being on. They know.
Scotty - C1201 code sets in other modules during CEL - normal. The issue is that you are using ALLDATA instead of an actual data repository. OEM info doesn't go into depth on the code. Source - I used to work for their biggest competitor (not Mitchell). We received tons of hotline calls on it. If you notice more closely, when you pulled the C1201, you did so from the ABS computer, note the top section ABS $29. The ABS computer is letting you know the ECM has codes.
White smoke is water. If it only smokes when cold and the coolant stays on level it would be just condensation in the exhaust. You don't need a fancy scantool for that.
Gen 4 runners (especially the 4ltr 6) rarely have valve stem issues. Regular fluid changes and 500k is not unusual. Biggest issue w/old runners is rust underneath.
I appreciate the logic of not just throwing parts at it. On the other hand 1 year later it’s determined is the ecm you might have to also replace the catalytic converter, or other components that might have worn out prematurely. Due to faulty ecm
Wow Scotty, you guys in Houston are really getting hammered by rain. Back in June of '01 T.S. Allison , was there, dumping rain, going back into the gulf, getting stronger, and coming back and dumping more tons of rain. I flew to LA , and drove back right through that, wow,,,,,,,,,,,, from Yuma, we get an av. of 3" per year, yet, that day dropped 15",,,, never seen anything like it in my life!
I kinda thought of the same thing; perhaps he can put a properly working computer (preferably from another 4Runner?) and see if it still runs into the same problem. If it doesn't, then wouldn't that confirm that it is indeed the computer that's busted?
@Sam S I was just joking, I own a few vehicles and I just wanted to crack a Celica joke. I own a 2012 lexus ct200h fsport and a 2009 Jetta tdi at the moment.
@Sam S I love my Jetta it's built like a tank. I get 700km a tank for 40L of diesel. I have it tuned for 200hp, and 330lbs of torque. It has 10 year warranty from the VW emissions scandal and 3000$ given back, a new mechatronics update for the dsg transmission for free. I've put 200k km on the car so far as my daily commuter. I rebuilt the car from an accident. The rear got hit about 4 times and you would have never guess it. To sum it up the car has already paid me back my initial investment. It's saved my life and the car itself is solid. No real mechanical issues with the proper oils being used and following maintenance intervals.
Okay so Oil burns blue, if it only burns on cold start - valve seals. If the car emits blue smoke all the time - piston rings. Now you say there was no bad data yet you didn’t show any, most likely the F/T was in the negatives. VSC = vehicle skid control NOT speed control. What amazes me is how you portray yourself as a professional and offer all this info for people to see and only about 1/2 your info is accurate in most videos.
At 12 years and 220K miles (350K kms) I wouldn't even bother fixing it and just drive it till it blows or look for a new/used car. It has served more than enough for a Toyota. Most cars wouldn't have lasted half that. Great video Scotty!
That kinda sounds like a problem that My Dad's 1979 Ford Dump truck had. It had a 400 Cubic Inch Engine. When You parked it on a hill with the back of the truck lower and it sat for a few days, it would smoke like a train for a few minutes. A mechanic told Us that the rear main seal in the back of the engine needed replacing. We never got it fixed, Dad just lived with it. All We used it for was to haul Chicken Manure and an occasional load of gravels. Dad sold it when He retired a few years ago. I think it used some oil, of course it was an old truck.
Raining everywhere except on Scotty who gets sunshine even under the porch. I look forward to the day he shows us the behind the scenes green screen. Great vid as always.
Well Scott and anyone that wants to listen I have a few Yotas my self and the little trick is that once they start to age you know and trust me rust start to come to life in the chassi and the solution being 99% of the time is just adding more Ground to it than what already is in it. Deficiency or resistance has a big big factor on this problems and it seems like this vehicles where perfectly engineered for the electronic components to start failing after the vehicle pass or reaches a number of years and all I can say is try it I have done it several times and my vehicles are crazy smooth and I can prove that any of my electronics haven't bothering me on the same 4runner that you working on and I haven't changed a single sensor on it either from the Trans or Engine.
I often see Toyotas here in the UK with smoke pouring out of them. I assume it’s because even when they’re neglected and on death’s door they keep on running
@Randy Jackson obviously a person driving a 2008 4 runner doesn't have a Crap load of money. so, he's trying to save the customer a bunch of money in tracing down an intermittent fault , just let it get worse and the find will be cheaper and easier to fix. This way the customer gets to save hundreds of dollars on troubleshooting expenses. Let it Fail , that way he can go right to it. Customer saves alot of cash that way.
I have a 4.7 4runner that smoked once in a while. Turned out it was sucking oil up the pcv and into the intake. Disconnected and plugged the hose, haven't had a problem since. currently at 305,000+ miles. Toyota!
Scotty - next time this 4Runner comes in, check the wiring leading to the ECM. On these, I've seen transmission fluid migration creep up the wiring harness and into the ECM. If I recall correctly, the ECM is located under the glove box.
It's not the ECM. If you went into mode 6 you could find the freeze frame data and the misfires. Without seeing the car if I had to take an educated guess at it then it would be the knock sensors or their harness as that is the most common for those as I have done a few. I know you're old school Scotty but you gotta learn how to use that fancy scanner, new cars are easy if you know how to work on them. Mode 6 stores everything and you could find your answers. Don't ever reset check engine light without seeing the freeze frame data as to what triggered it and what conditions it was set at so you can maybe duplicate it. Love your honesty but in this case maybe you can have customer bring it back when CEL comes on again and diagnose it again. Keep it up, love your vids and hatred of nearly every car I ever owned and love LOL
One month later, customer drives up in a new Toyota Scotty: What happened to your 4Runner? Customer: It "accidentally" got caught in some floodwaters :-)
Scotty, I was just about to email you about a similar problem in my 2000 Lexus RX 300 with 148k. I have white smoke out of the exhaust (not all the time, but when I do it's alot of smoke) and very high oil consumption (5 quarts every 2 months). No lights have come on in the dash and it runs great otherwise. I went to the service department at my local Toyota dealership and they told me that it's probably blown piston rings due to carbon build up from the ethenol in the fuel.
had a 96 bronco with an ignition control module that went bad. Got it replaced and that one went bad too. Brought it to a mechanic who knew what they were doing and they found that the heatsink bonding goop between the heatsink and the ICM was dried out and gone so it led to overheating the module!! Simple stuff led to 2 module deaths in two weeks!!
That’s stupid on steroids, baby!! Sell the car and buy a scooter. No a razor scooter. You gotta live like no one else so later you can live like no one else
I have a 2015 sr5 4Runner that dose the same thing, every once and awhile it’ll misfire and blow white smoke, I let off the pedal then give it pedal and it stop the misfire and smoke. In the year that I’ve had it, it’s only done it a hand full of times. It runs really good when it’s no missing and blow smoke 💨
Scotty, the abs/trac module picks up an emissions related fault and will go offline. This is normal. You may also see the codes in the transmission control module. Use a scanner that can do a full system scan and you will see it. The cats are damaged from the oil consumption. Try letting it sit for 2-3 days and re starting it. It may miss at start up if you have a oil leak dripping in from valve stem seals or excessive oil pooled in the intake manifold dripping a puddle in a cylinder. Either way. Engine and 2 cats eventually.
Dude! After getting my oil changed from the Toyota dealership, the check engine light and the traction control light came on. Upon further investigation, they put the air filter in backwards and some pieces were loose. Once I took it back to the dealership and they corrected the issue the check engine light and traction control light comes on. I took it back to them three times and they said that it was the software and manually reset it by the master technician. It's still on and it's been since July. They said nothing's wrong with this so once I heard you say, I believe it. My car has 271000 miles and it's still going strong with some oil burning here and there.
Hey Scotty, I had the P0430 code for a while and just changed my Catalytic Converter and the Engine light went away and the fuel wasn't burning that much. Don't know if that's the customer's option but that's how I got rid of of the code. Also I changed the gasket on both ends too. The P0430 code was for my driver side manifold/Catalytic. I'm in California so I have to smog the vehicle every two years. My vehicle is a 2005 4Runner and has almost 250,000 and still going strong.
The car in the video has a high mileage, over 220K miles. MANY problems start to pop at this mileage even with Toyotas. You won't have to worry about anything for atleast another 12 years.
I agree with many comments here in that how can an ecm issue cause a mechanical oil consumption issue? I have my own guesses but il keep them to myself. Great videos though love the channel
Many years ago a Ford 351 would intermittently smoke, burning oil. In that case there was a small crack in the fuel pump - that would draw oil into the gas line, but strangely only intermittently as mentioned.
I bought my parents 2002 Limited Sequoia almost 2 years ago and it had both VSC and traction lights on. I spent some time working on it fixing different issues and finally got it up and running back in February. I drove it around for awhile both lights still on and in June I drove it on Cruise Control for about 40 miles and the next time I started it both the lights were off and have not come back on since.
Just got my 08 4runnner 156000 miles drove it from houston to baton rouge just needs some tires and suspension work and maybe some other minor problems but I'm putting it in the shop asap
The sun always shines on Scotty! That I get, but how do you stay dry? J/K - I get it. What really stumps me is how you edit these things jumping around like that. I mean you change position, jump around and don’t lose continuity. Amazing.
How to make a Scotty Kilmer thumbnail... Step one: find any shot in the whole video Step two: put a big arrow that says a random word like “won’t” or “don’t”
Probrem is - here in cali, once registration is up and need smog, this suv will be automatically fail - you will get forced to fix the issue or get rid of this thing.

Customer: Scotty would you fix my vehicle
Scotty: No. I dont think I will.
Hahahaha
Its a celica tho
But he will drop it off at your house and give you an in depth analysis porch side.
White smoke is water. If it only smokes when cold and the coolant stays on level it would be just condensation in the exhaust. You don't need a fancy scantool for that.
Hey Scotty, leaking valve stem seals also make a car smoke. I would check the intake valves for oil deposits.
This, and leaking valve stems usually means oil burning at start and then it stops.
He said leak down test............
@@judge724 would depend on the wear and enviromental factors
Gen 4 runners (especially the 4ltr 6) rarely have valve stem issues. Regular fluid changes and 500k is not unusual. Biggest issue w/old runners is rust underneath.
I appreciate the logic of not just throwing parts at it. On the other hand 1 year later it’s determined is the ecm you might have to also replace the catalytic converter, or other components that might have worn out prematurely. Due to faulty ecm
This man is literally recording himself with 2 separate tripods on the customer's front doorstep 😂

Scotty, put the computer from your Celica in it!
@Sam S Thanks Sam! You saved me from alot of trouble!
@Sam S I'm going to take a wild guess and say that nothing gets by you Sam 😂😂
I cannot fathom how a ECM could cause a mechanical problem like burning oil.
My guess would be bad valve seals.
Scotty said it’s burning oil due to high mileage and poor maintenance and that the ECM is causing the smoking.
I would look at the plugs for burnt oil. I would want to see if it’s localized to one or more cylinders.
You're going to need to start working on boats, with all that rain in Houston

Had to replace a timing cover seal and manifold on my 05 4runner. 160000 miles and going strong.
Intake or exhaust manifold? Did u have to take the timing chain off?
@im ok12 he said manifold also so wasn't sure what he ment
I often see Toyotas here in the UK with smoke pouring out of them. I assume it’s because even when they’re neglected and on death’s door they keep on running
This is Where YEARS OF EXPERIENCE comes into play. Good vid !

Scotty - next time this 4Runner comes in, check the wiring leading to the ECM. On these, I've seen transmission fluid migration creep up the wiring harness and into the ECM. If I recall correctly, the ECM is located under the glove box.
Problem with just drive it as is, if you're in an emissions testing area with smoke and a code thrown, you won't be able to get tags.
One month later, customer drives up in a new Toyota
Scotty: What happened to your 4Runner?

I have an 04 of those, almost to 200,000 miles. Love the truck, they're usually quite robust!
Scotty won't fix it unless it's a '94 Celica.

It's a 2011 Toyota Camry SE.

Many years ago a Ford 351 would intermittently smoke, burning oil. In that case there was a small crack in the fuel pump - that would draw oil into the gas line, but strangely only intermittently as mentioned.
