I took delivery on my 2024 4Runner TRD Offroad last week. I saw the writing on the wall and decided it was now or never. I only regret not doing it sooner.
Same here, decided to go with a 24 TRD Offroad last month.
I’m trying to decide if I find a 4runner or replace my manual FJ with a 13 or 14 manual fj (if I can find one) or get manual taco. Love the Tacomas but the manual and 3.5 in them just aren’t like the good old 4.0.
We did the same Exact same thing and bought a 2024 Limited back in May for my wife. It replaced our 2006 Tundra Limited with 177K on the odo and will use as our Winter/Two Track vehicle here in Northern Michigan 😏
Did the same for a TRD Off Road Premium in Underground. Should have done this a long time ago. I'm in love with it.
5th gen 4runners are close to perfection for a mid size suv. Thats why they continue to sell even though they haven't changed in years.
The best thing a manufacturer can do for the consumer is find something that works really well and leave it alone.
Made in Japan!
They should keep it as an option on the new ones

4 Runners with a v-6 are Fantastic had a 2002 sold it had 389,000 miles still ran like the first day I bought it I don’t think I should have sold it Loved it

I LOVE my 2016 4Runner SR5. All function AND form. I sold my 1996 4Runner with 330,000 miles and it was still going strong.
My 2016 Tacoma TRD SPORT 6cyl manual transmission has 208000 miles on it. Still runs just as good as it did the day I drove it off the lot.
does it hunt for gear ? the transmissions suck in these the throttle response is delayed etc... nice truck though... I have a 2022 and the transmission is wonky...

@kenni411 most cars with drive by wire (throttle is electronic, not a cable like it used to be) have laggy/odd feeling acceleration. Buy a pedal commander, it's a simple plug and play thing and give you a ton of adjustment to make it a little or alot more responsive. Doesn't harm anything, it simply increases the voltage it sends to the little motor opening the throttlebody which increases the speed it opens at.
Lol literally every point I made to my wife justify my 2023 SR5P.... Now she's didn't understand nor did she care.. just saw the price. However 1 year later she's loves it after a few bucks put into it. Scotty it was awesome for her to hear it from someone else let alone you! Lol I watch all the time. She knows the intro and usually watches aswell. Thanks dude!

I bought a 2024 Toyota 4Runner Limited on December and already had about 7,300 miles on it. I couldn't be happier with my purchased.
Man, I could haul a decent trailer behind it, take it out in the mountains or in the woods, horse it all I wanted and she would come back for more. What a nice rig, way to go, Scotty.
The 1GR-FE V6 has been around for over twenty years, and is probably the most reliable engine available in the North American market
I average 19.2 mpg in my 2022 and I drive like a granny. Still cheaper than buying a new car every 10 years.
I average 18 mpg in my 2011 and I drive like a granny too😂
lol got a 2024 trd pro and its getting like 16.1 right now....
Same with me in my ‘21 PRO.
My rx350 with v6 gets 21 mpg with street driving and over 30mpg on the highway with if no one is in my way 😂😂
I have a 2022 2.7 four and I just got 24.3 running 75 mph down the interstate . The best I have seen was 30mph . It LOVES 45- 50 MPH !!

turbos suck, it's another thing to worry about failing eventually, even Honda turbos do have problems on the new civics.
It depends. If it's a toy, I'm OK with them and they are dope! But for a reliable toyota? Nah man. No turbos.
I had a turbo many years ago in a car. I will keep my Toyota Tacoma with the 4.0 V6. 80 k miles. I am to close to retirement to go in debt for a vehicle. All 3 are paid for. Thank you Scotty
Thanks Scotty! We got a 2024 Off Road Premium 4Runner early this month and love it. Changed the oil at 800 miles just to get the early gunk out of there. Fingers crossed we will go the distance.

Toyotas aren't in Alaska due to just how rare they are but the few that are actually do survive the trails of alaska

I have a turbo 4 cylinder, but it's in my 2004 Saab convertible. 224000 miles and is a daily commuter. 120 miles round trip/day. 31 mpg. Pretty rugged car
Have one in my Lexus IS and it's fun enough

A turbo in a sedan is okay because it's rarely used compared to a truck where the turbo is going to be working almost all the time! An engine designed for a truck and turbocharged needs to be built tougher like a diesel engine, otherwise it will not last!!!
For some reason I was in love with a 1992 Toyota Camry Station Wagon. It was not a ‘sexy’ vehicle but rode superior to any truck or SUV, and accomplished the multi-utility role of SUV for nearly every task anyone would need. Had 288,000 miles before it died. I wish Toyota would ‘wake-up’ and build another Camry Wagon with like-kinds of very reliable V6s.
Closest thing is the Corolla Cross or Subarus Outback since Subaru is owned by Toyota and are completely made in Japan as well.

My 2000 sr5 gets about 19mpg combined. Not bad at all! 235k miles and running like new. It’s crazy how well they made the 3rd gens.
I have an 08 sr5 with 165,000 miles. Runs beautifully! I don’t ever plan on getting rid of it

I have a 2024 off road premium with KDSS. It rides very smooth on highway and on the curves. Also sharp turns good, much less body roll with KDSS.
Adding bilstein 6112 shocks with small lift.
Nobody I know that currently owns Toyotas do not want a 4cyl w/turbo. Toyota will eventually realize that most people dont want 4cyl and hopefully go back to making what people actually want
They retooled their plants, so it would be at least a few model years. The Chevron decision is overturned, and that nerfed the EPA. Hopefully Toyota offers us the engines we want down the road.
Doesn’t matter what you want, the climate hoax and US Govt are forcing this crap on us through forcing the mfg’s.
It's not up to Toyota. They are forced to do this because of EPA emission regulations.

Bought my 2023 4runner last year because of the reliability of the drivetrain. Its not the most fun to drive but I recently did the OTT tune on it w moderate setting and it performs so much better now. Not the best for towing either but it moves my 3k lb boat and trailer fine.
I am averaging over 19 but I drive like the old man that I am but it's worth the peace of mind that I dont worry about breaking down and getting stranded.
That's the exact vehicle I would buy, if I was in the market. Toyota seems to be slipping with all of their new models.
Emissions
Our govt threw them a curve ball with emissions and mileage improvements. Part of their EV agenda. Don't you love it when elected people tell what you can and cannot have.

The metals inside some of the new tundra is concerning.
@karkule5919 Government requirements to reduce emissions (including increased mpg requirements) force car manufacturers to do whatever they can to stay in business and not get fined into oblivion. This includes making smaller turbo motors.
Politicians just like making up stuff to get re-elected. 🤷♂️
2014 4Runner SR5 with 364K miles and still going strong. MPG ranges from 18.5 to 20.5.
been wanting this 4runner for years, and I’ve now had my 08 ML350 for almost ten years and am ready for an upgrade. decidided to get the 5th gen 4runner since last year but waiting to save more money and for the price to go down a little more, but I’m 100% going to get one and plan to have it for at least 10 years
My 06 Tacoma has the v-6, and I love it! It still runs great and has no problems! I drive the new model daily, it sucks! And that doesn’t even talk about the trash interior materials!

Bought wife 2024 TRD ORP last week. Couldn't be happier buying the final model year 5th Gen. Nabbed a 2021 Tundra a few years back to get the last of the V8's. The Japanese Kaizen philosophy is no joke around the Toyota office. Continuous improvements by small changes results in amazing results over time.
Toyota shot themselves in the foot with the 4cyls. Honda keeps their V6. The Pilot V6 will be the next popular "go to" vehicle.
But it has no frame, and you can't tow as much.

I just traded off a 2023 tundra. It already has a history there’s already a significant recall on that engine.
This is why we got our Highlander a few years used with a 3.5 v6. Can’t get new ones unless you want a 2.4 liter turbo charged or hybrid engine. Sadly the wife didn’t like how the 4 runner road so we got the Highlander instead
You completely missed the part about body on solid frame
@@TrailerDays why did you think my wife didn’t like how the 4 runner road. Body on frame is nice for longevity and strength and repair, but theirs a reason most people don’t like how trucks ride (most being body on frame). If it was me I’d get the 4runner hands down, but this was the wife’s vehicle. Not mine!
Glad I bought a 23 TRD off road premium. Wish they would’ve continued making the 5th gen.

This is sad. Toyota didn’t learn anything when they discontinued the 5.7 in the Tundra. That’s been a total “cluster”! I’ll keep my 2020 Tundra.

Just picked up a brand new 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD love it.
Look out for the metal shavings in the motor my neighbor just put his in the shop getting a new engine went out with only 8400 mi on it 🤦
The only thing that I wish it had is a transmission cooler for when I’m towing my boat

@jarad0714 my 2024 4Runner filter had tiny specs of metal in the folds. 961 miles. I think there is always some metal debris in metal manufacturing that hides.
We have a 2016 Tacoma TRD OffRoad with 108k km and a 2017 4Runner SR5 with 28k km.
Im going to run them until their reliability drops off.
In Vancouver they don't salt much in the winter so, knock on wood, they'll last.
my 18 tacoma trd quad cab with the 3.5 v6 gets 24.6 mpg around town , 22.6 with the ac running . i love this truck
Just got a 2017 4Runner ....I like it alot.
Love my 22 ORP. Great daily driver, great over lander. The T4 will not last. People will rebel after 2-3 years. But time will tell.
Great video, i’m looking at getting a 2012 Toyota fForerunner to replace my 20005 Lexus GX 470 which has a lot of rust on the frame.
Like auto start/stop, the real world mpg advantage of turbo 4’s vs V6 are minuscule. Plus V6s last a lot longer and require less maintenance over time- but maybe that’s the point. Engineered obsolescence. Used Toyotas and Lexus cars with bigger engines are the better buy IMO.
Well, I wanna compact truck. I’m still driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma pre-runner and I’m gonna keep driving it till somebody makes a compact truck with a 6 foot bed.

I got my 23 4Runner ORP with 11k miles. I want to drive the thing until the wheels fall off, fun drive. I don't miss my truck nearly as much as I thought I would.

a 2.4L Turbo is generally not a joke, unless it is placed in a vehicle like a 4Runner. Then it is a major joke. No matter how people end up liking it. DO NOT expect it to last 300k miles in the 4Runner.
Just got a 2012 4runner, the level of quality is incredible. Scottys uses the word 'solid' a lot for a reason
I still drive my 2011 every day. It is indestructible.
Both my Camry XSE 91k and my Highlander SE 179k have the bullet proof v6. Running great. I can’t ever see trading them in. 🤞

Should be taking delivery of a 24 4 runner off-road premium this week. I made same decision. Get it now before they start going to the turbo 4's that will burn out and have the carbon buildup issues with turbos. Simple, long lasting perfect. The engine doesn't have a ton of power but it gets job done and lasts.
Agree! recently rented the Ram1500 Hemi V8, Silverado 2.7T L4, and now a tundra V6 3.4T..... all about the same mpg.... The L4 is quite loud at high rev....
I bought the 2023 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with the V6 engine for all those same reasons and I LOVE MINE!! Mine is in the Lunar Rock paint job. Did I mention that I Love it!!?

I have my 2018 sequoia with about 60k miles. I thought trading it for the new one but after all the recalls and scary story with the new engine, decided to keep it. The V8 it’s amazing. Fuel economy is not bad. I don’t really drive that much and I put gas every two weeks. So I’ll keep her for now!
My 1998 model with a 4 cylinder and manual trans is great.

I got a 2014 and that thing runs as good as the day I bought it its built like a tank I will keep it till I die and then my grandson will get it
The turbo burns cleaner which I believe hold priority over gas mileage. Atkinson cycle on a V6 does just the same thing...

If I did not need a truck I would have bought the 4Runner no direct injection crazy stuff just trustee port injected 4.0L V-6 & 5-speed tranny built in Japan! I would go TRD off-road non-premium badass SUV! I have a '22 Toyota Tacoma V-6 6-speed manual transmission TRD off-road poverty 📦... 16K miles runs like a top. OTT tune sumo springs for towing no more sagging 😂
Help Scottie! I have a 2022 Tundra that I purchased new. My current mileage is 18,500 and although my truck is part of the engine replacement recall that is not what I am complaining about, what I am complaining about is my front passenger window got stuck halfway open/closed and it's been sitting at the dealership for 2 weeks with no parts available to fix it (the cable snapped and motor burned out). They did put me in a rental (tacoma) but they have no idea when the parts will be available to fix my window! This is my 4th Tundra and never had an issue like this with any of my others. I've already called Toyota and they have no idea when parts will be available either. They also said they have no parts to fix the fuel line recall.
I have a 2002 Taco with the original crappy frame. It's immaculate. It's a made in California Toyota and I lived in Arizona and the California Central Valley.
My uncle got 4wd 2014 4runner limited and it still rolling pretty well, even better gas mileage than land cruisers 200 V8s🤣🤣🤣
They should also put that 4.0L engine back in the Tacoma. And, Nissan needs to keep the V8 with the 7speed transmission in the Armada. It's been proven many times now that smaller engines with turbos and "poly-matic" transmissions don't get better mileage, but do have more failures.....expensive ones

The good news: Nissan Frontier has a naturally aspirated 3.8L V6. That's an option as well as finding/buying used V6 Tacomas/4Runners.

I always wonder why the twin turbo V6 in the tundra wasn’t just an option for people who wanted it like the F150 ecoboost. I think a lot of people still want V8 trucks.
Scotty I bought a new 22 4Runner 2WD I get 20mpg with no problem, that’s driving city and highway. It’s sad to see Toyota go down this road “ big mistake “
Bought mine new in 2019 for a lot less than what new ones are being sold for now. TRD Off Road Premium. Amazing how much prices have gone up in 5 years.
Currently have 76K miles. So far only had regular oil changes/ tire rotations, new set of tires, and just had rear brakes done at 75K. The thing still feels like a tank. Hoping to keep it for at least another 5 years.
The only downside is gas mileage. But to buy a new car for $50K+ to get an extra 10mpg at most just doesn't seem worth it to me.
4runners in the late 90s and into 2009 definitely had rust issues ive had to replace my 3rd gen frane i have to do it again on my new 98

My 22 Ram PowerWagon is on the bottom of your list as it was built in Mexico. It has been flawless since I got it used 2 years ago. Time will tell, but, with Yoko MT tires it is an absolute beast off road, but reasonably comfortable and quiet on the asphalt.
I wanted tundra but no V-8 and outrageous prices on used ones ran me off. Couldn't be more satisfied!

I have a 5th Gen and I will not be getting rid of it, unless it’s damaged in an accident or something bad. Otherwise, it’s my forever vehicle.
Ive been a Toyota Dealer for 16 years, the old runner is an amazing truck but its time for the new 4cy turbo, works so good in the Tacoma, you are totally wrong on the mileage

Great vehicle but I got rid of mine because it wasn’t very stable at highway speeds and had no passing power
I just bought a new 2024 myself and I was shocked at how little powere it has but for me the trade off with reliability makes it worth it.
I have 2010 Tacoma with the same motor and i get 19-20 mpg with it. Love the 4.0 v6
I had a 2018 4Runner ORP that got 21-22 mpg (physically measured not estimated by car computer). I just picked up a 2024 ORP built by the dealer with Emu shocks, huge tires, C4 sliders, etc. 16-17 mpg.

He didn’t put the Bilstein shocks on it. Those come standard with a TRD off road package. Along with the red TRD stitching in the seats
Scotty I feel the same about Toyota getting rid of their 6 cylinder engines. I loved them and I feel Toyota will lose customers like myself that loves a V6 made by them…
I really hope Toyota gets back to basics quickly. Their reputation for reliability as of late has been hurt in a big way because of very poor engineering decisions. Also, I hate touch screens. Physical buttons, knobs and levers are the only way to go imo.
