Having owned two 5th gen 4Runners over the past 12 years, I REALLY miss my 2019 TRD Off Road Premium that I had to sell last year. I miss it A LOT! I had done so many modifications and made it one of a kind and distinctly mine. I'd buy it back, if I could. I was very reluctant to sell it. All those memories. The 4Runner name will always be very nostalgic for me, especially the 5th gen😊
@lunamaria1048 how do you feel about this American designed 6th gen? Even the TRD models won't even have frame mounted bumpstops just like the new Taco and they blow our pretty easy if you bottom out. I have a 2019 4runner ORP since new and love my reliable ol girl
@@makeveli3970 Ohhhh I have seen a video where a new Tacoma TRD Off Road did exactly that. TBH we know the 6th gen is the exact same vehicle, so we know it will have the exact same issue. To answer your question, I wouldn't buy the 6th gen, because it is just an American designed vehicle now, BUT lol I have the GX 550 Overtrail. I could express minor concerns about this as well, but so far, it is good!
@lunamaria1048 The front shock mounted bumpstops are similar to a small sports car like a Miata that just weighs about a ton and stays on roads. This TNGAF (Toyota Not Giving A Fuck) platform is corporate greed. Had Toyota engineered a cost effective midsized platform, their engineers wouldn't have had to cheap out and strip down once great platforms to be no stronger than a 90s model Miata. Your GX 550 has single front frame mounted bumpstops. The 300 Series has 4 bumpstops in the front and all of these vehicles are based on that platform. Now the only way Toyota can make midsized affordable is to take away much needed technology that could be there if they had made a cost-effective, dedicated midsized platform. I have been driving Toyota 4x4s for 3 decades and saddened by this. We need private automotive manufacturing companies that can put customers before shareholders and investors
I know you probably love your new GX 550 (I do love my new Land Cruiser too) but the 4Runner will always be the iconic off-roader with unforgettable experiences. I also think of buying the last of the 2024s (almost bought a 24 4Runner TRD Pro last week) and I might still do that before it's too late. Anyways, we are supposed to bring yours and my vehicle to off-roading courses remember?
@@AutomotivePress I do love the GX 550 Overtrail! I wanted a proper body-on-frame 4x4 with capabilities like my last 4Runner TRD Off Road (with the KDSS), but with more modern technology and luxury interior, like the Defender I leased for 2 years. My only complain is the interior is great, but was a bit underwhelming, for the price. And the approach angle is the same as the previous 460, which was pretty bad lol. I'll see what aftermarket can help, event The 5th gen will always have a very special place in my heard, because 2 of then provided 12 years of my best adventures and memories😊. Thanks!
I own a 2023 Limited. This vehicle drives, rides so incredibly well. It’s so much fun to drive. Smooth as silk shifting. Comfortable ride. So quiet inside. The 4Runner feels so comfortable & solid. I even get 21 + miles to the gallon ( live in a rural area); driving in a normal driving mode. The Limited is more ‘Shinier’ than I’d like, however, such a fantastic vehicle I live with it. Maybe after it’s out of the 36,000 miles warranty I will ‘modify’ the parts that are shiny to ‘black-out’. This vehicle I will keep forever. I have no regrets. None . The 4Runner is the Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I have owned trucks, sports cars, sedans, coupes, of many brands. Many were great, & I loved them. Honestly though, my 4Runner beats all of them. The 4Runner is one beautiful vehicle. Hands down the very best vehicle ever made. Don’t believe me. Go out & test drive one . Make your own decisions & judgement. You won’t be disappointed. You’re going to want to buy, on the spot; immediately.
WHEN YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW OLD A VEHICLE IS BESIDE WHAT YEAR IT IS, YOU DO NOT ASK "WHAT GENERATION IS THIS TOYOTA 4 RUNNER " YOU ALWAYS ASK "WHAT YEAR IS THIS TOYOTA 4 RUNNER AND HOW MANY MILES ARE ON IT ". David I have a 2014 Trail 4wd edition, and I have loved this vehicle. It has gone to all its services for the 132,000 mi I have on it. I have changed the oil and am on my second set of tires. The 4runner is the best vehicle I have ever had. I take it on all my highway trips without any hesitation. It has never let me down and never left me stranded. It is something else!
Coming from a 2010 Altima,i upgraded to the 4runner limited.its my very first SUV I ever drove and owned.it feels like a military tank the moment I got inside it.its a chunky, high off the ground vehicle.i love it.everything feels right about it.durable,simplicity,low-cost maintenance and longevity. Otherwise thank you for this informative video I hope it will convince others to buy a 4runner.😊
I’ve got a 2019 4 Runner TRD Off Road !! The 4.0 V6 has plenty power and the 5 speed transmission has a manual mode or sport mode if that’s what you call it.I didn’t buy it for fuel mileage but constantly get 19 to 21 MPG. Love the vehicle old school,no high tech technology, still has a CD player, love the fact that I physically have to shift the transfer case into 4 wheel high or low from 2 wheel drive no electronics there.Absolutely love the rear window that it rolls down into the tailgate.A true body on frame SUV.Took it to Ziebart for Rust Proofing and Undercoating and just Ceramic Coated the paint for longevity and durability.Gonna keep it for many years !!
I had a 2017 4Runner SR5 Premium 4WD and absolutely loved it. Ran like a clock for 95,000 miles and I sold it for $6000 less than I paid for it 6 years later. I had a 2023 Tacoma and it was very apparent it was made in Mexico. I wanted to get another 4Runner, so I got a 2024 TRD Off Road Premium. This car will never leave my family. I love it
I'm on my 2nd 4 Runner, a 2020 Venture. Your videos are some of the best when it comes to education. I do take it off road about once / month and always try to lock the rear axle on a steep hill. I had rock sliders installed by 4WD parts when the truck was new,and they definitely have protected the underside, especially when it comes to rocks sticking out of the dirt. I just had Les Schwabb put some off road Toyo tires on it, same size as factory, and I'm good to go. Plan on leaving everything else stock. I don't have any desire to try any rock climbing or swamp driving. This truck has always gotten me where I wanted to go. I planned on keeping it forever when I bought it and everyone of your videos just confirms I made a good choice. This 6 cylinder engine is perfect for me ,with rising gas prices and all the talk of electric vehicles in the future. I have no interest in a 4 cylinder turbo engine that the new models come with. I think these "old school " 4 Runners will someday be collector vehicles like the Fj's that were sold here in the USA. If anyone reading this wants one, get one while you can !
What a great, comprehensive explanation about why the 4Runner is so outstanding! I purchased a 2024 SR5 Premium in February. You are quite correct, it is solidly built, smooth running, and a pleasure to drive. Because of all of the things you noted in your video, the forerunner has one of the highest resale values of any used vehicle. I am so glad I bought mine! Thanks for a great video!
Just purchased (07/06/2024) a new 2024 SR5 Premium in Ice Cap. Love the look and ride of the vehicle. Glad I grabbed one before the 2025's. Great review !! Thank you !!!
We have a 2014 4runner Trail. 3" lift 33" tires, winch, rock sliders, dual batteries, Fridge, set up for Overlanding. Just towed a 4000# travel trailer cross country 4800 miles, even in the mountains, no issues. Has 162,000 miles and still drives like new. Wish it got better gas mileage and the tech was updated. Will wait until the 2026 comes out. Then maybe we will change. Not in any hurry...
Traded in my 23 Tacoma for a used 21 4Runner, and so glad I did, powertrain and ride quality is head and shoulders about the Taco..I'll drive it until the wheels fall off. Love it!
I’m closing in on retirement, and I needed a vehicle that will be with me through. I chose a 4Runner 3 years ago. This thing is a tank. I am so happy with it.
This Engineer knows what he’s talking about. Like he says, you don’t have to take his word for it; “go out & test drive one yourself”. I agree with the Engineer, you won’t be sorry. 😊
Love my 2016 4runner trail with kdss, and she's all decked out for overlandding. Not one single problem. The only thing I've replaced is a new battery and the drivers side heated mirror ( glass ). With only 54000km, a ceramic coated body, she still looks in showroom condition. And yes, she goes off-road for camping adventures, i just baby it and look after it 😊
Thanks for this video, David! This video prompted me to say yes to the dealer when he told me that a new 4Runner was coming in with no buyer yet. It's suppose to arrive next week.
I just purchased a ‘24 TRD PRO, the last V6 Terra color. Thank you for your video, it really helped me with my decision. This SUV will last me 30 years! I’m so excited 🎉
We have a lot of Toyotas in our family, but between just me and my wife we have a 23 Camry 14 limited 4Runner and a 04 Tacoma single cab 4x4, They serve us well!
Hi David, love your channel, can you please make a video on your prediction and release of the redesign RAV4 with what you think will change and be updated? Interested in more specifically in a redesign RAV4 prime. Thank you. I love the information you provide.
Had 140k on my 2014 trail when I sold it. Only changed the brakes, battery and tires. Used it for some pretty aggressive off roading(for 33in tires) regularly too.
I totally agree with you this is why I own a 2018 Trd off-road best SUV ever. When you get underneath it you can definitely see how well-made this vehicle is.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO DAVID. I HAVE A 2022 TOY LIMITED 4X4 WHICH IS AMAZING, THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I HAVE A 2008 FJ CRUISER 4X2 WHICH IS INDESTRUCTIBLE. BOTH CARS ARE MAGNIFICENT, I NEVER GO TO THE MECHANIC.
Just purchased a 2024 off-road premium and Barcelona red I got it for 4000 under MSRP. The only BS Ivee was 299 for vin Etching. I also own a 2021 TRT Pro with low mileage that I kept. Great vehicles.
I've been driving my 2008 4Runner for almost 16 years without any problems at all. Normal dealer maintenance has kept it looking and working like new to this day. My RWD SR5 handles Iowa winters with no problem. In the summer I always get 20.2 MPG in the city. I think it might go for another 16 years, not bad for 28K new price.
I’m waiting for the 2025 hybrid which is also made in Japan. I never would have been able to even consider a 4Runner due to the poor MPG until now because I travel a lot for work. I am excited to finally be able to get one next year! I have every confidence that Toyota 6th gen will be high quality.
5th gen 4runner equipped with kdss.. get one before it's too late. I have a feeling they'll be harder to come by since the 6th gen is practically only a 4runner by name... no bump stops, no v6 ,no kdss... no thx
This sounds like my 2nd Gen 95 4Runner. She is built like a tank. Do they offer this Gen in 6 speed manual? I love my manual transmission. Great video 🙌🏽
Have a 5th Gen 4Runner and love it dearly but a 2nd Gen 2 door 5 speed is one of my dream cars. Think it’s one of the most under appreciated vehicles ever sold in the US. The 3.0 was a little wonky early on but just the same, that 4Runner is still basically a Hilux with rigid metal shell. Which is kinda nuts…in the very best way possible.
David! Another great video; thanks a lot! However, I have a question that I would like to ask. Is TRD Pro worth the extra few thousands if you are not a serious off-roader? I would really appreciate it if you could answer this. ❤
Hi David, Thanks to your video, I just traded in my 2019 Porsche Cayenne S for a 2024 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Pro (keeping the 2017 911 GTS). I want a reliable, low cost of maintenance SUV for a daily driver, and your review was very informative. Thank you for sharing your expertise in this video. Best Regards, Craig
Agree 💯.... I have a 2016 tral premium and love it. My mom had to sell her 4th gen because she could not climb in it anymore. It was 17 yrs old and sold for over 14 grand, in less than 12hrs. The guy drove 5 hrs to meet us and payed cash... he wanted that Lexus V8 engine...lol
It’s was a touch choice but just traded in our 2013 sr5 4Runner for a the last of the gen5 2024 trd offroad over the new 2025 coming out.👍🏼wanted another 4Runner that would take us another 10+years with no issues.I am looking forward seeing the new gen6 4Runners on the road though and see how they hold up.
Would you please share your recommendations in helping new 4Runner owners select (or ignore the need) rustproofing for our vehicles - especially for the vulnerable frame? PLEASE share your thoughts on the best undercoating product! Thank you in advance!!
For me when I saw images of the 6th gen 4Runner I was not crazy about the new body design. Furthermore, when I found out it was going to have a 4cyl turbo, I lost interest very quickly. I also heard the 25 4Runner does not have on body frame bump stops (it’s now in the suspension) and that was the tipping point for me. I caved and got the 24 4Runner trd off road. So far I’m pleased. I hope it will last me a long time.
My 2003 4 runner with over 200,000 miles had to be retired early with a rusted frame. I will miss that 4.7 engine. Bought a new 2024. The 4.0 liter is loud with less torque but does not require an expensive timing belt change. This time I sprayed the inside and outside of frame with Blaster Surface Shield and will continue to do that every year. Hope to get at least 20 years and 300,000 miles out of it.
Have a 2006 sr5 v6 4x4 208000 miles love it love it love it! I would like to see this review on the outgoing Armada/QX80. Thank you was always for another informative video.
I wanted the ultimate in reliability, so a few years ago I found a 2017 SR5 Premium RWD. No 4x4 gear. No KDSS. The most simple 4Runner ever. It’s the road runner. I have a TacoOff Road for the fun stuff. 117k now. Way more to go!
Thanks David. Great summary of an absolutely amazing vehicle. In my opinion, the last Toyota truck made that's worthy of Toyota's nameplate and off-road prowess and durability. I've (and my parents and grandparents) had the privilege to own and drive Toyota trucks/SUVs in Africa, Europe, Middle East and North America, and grew up driving Land Cruisers in Southern Africa. It is extraordinarily unfortunate that Toyota has completely compromised that heritage with the engineered obsolescence and pandering to maximize profits with its modern trucks. It's starting to show in in customer response. My local Toyota dealer in Edmonton (Sherwood Park Toyota) has had the same Land Cruiser in stock (7 of them) for the last month, with no sales. I've driven them and done a side by side comparison with my 2023 TRD OR (Canadian spec with KDSS), and sure, it feels (is) faster, but that's it, in everything else that matters to me (very much aligned with your 30 advantages), the Prado is far inferior. It literally feels like a cheap soda can. We're buying two more 2024 4Runners (for my spouse and parents) to lock into what is absolutely the last great Toyota vehicle...
Would like to get your opinion on the Land Cruiser Diesel. We rented one for 17 days and drove on every road in Iceland. Through lots of rivers and streams. No problems whatsoever.
Question: Is the new Underground color/undercoat still painted on 2024 4runner's with old 5th generation standards, or same thinner paint (and undercoat) such as the newer/current standards currently used on alternative toyota models painted the same underground color?
@Offshore1977 Thanks, I understand that underground is also painted on other toyota models,... I'm not sure If solar octane paint is exclusive to 4runner only
Can you make a video on the 2nd gen Honda CR-V? I think they’re very durable also and would be very interesting to see your perspective. Hope you can! Cheers
David- you and Ahmed convinced me to go out and buy a 5th gen! Bought a beautiful OFP in Underground. Thanks to you, I’m waking around telling my friends about Tahara Factory 😆
David I see that the TRD Off Road Premium model you are filming this episode with has the same HVAC dual zone climate controls with buttons in the middle and the LCD screen as my 23 Pro. I always thought that only the limited and pro models offered that arrangement?
My friend has a 32 year old 4Runner. That's what convinced me to buy mine. One day in the far away future, I'm going to die in my little house with my 2024 4Runner in the driveway.
I love my KDSS. Handles better on road than non KDSS models. Same goes off road, better articulation. Best thing is that it is automatic. No need to turn on and off the system. As with any 4Runner, just make sure you remove any salt spray from the frame and or undercoat it if you live in the north.
I've owned 7 different 4Runners so I'm very familiar with KDSS. What people don't realize is that KDSS doesn't affect the general ride when driving on normal roads. It really only comes into play when driving over off-road terrains. So people who think that KDSS somehow improves rides are not understanding how the system works. KDSS only becomes effective when it senses imbalance of the wheel articulations ... it is not engaged when driving in normal conditions (city or highway). And this is even more impactful on the new Lexus GX 550 (e-KDSS) because the system automatically disconnect the stabilizer bars when the road becomes extreme (in slow speed only). The new Land Cruiser/Tacoma/4Runner no longer has any KDSS and instead, has manual stabilizer disconnect. Hope this helps.
@@Jim-s6i3b Are you serious? Please see my comment above... FYI I've owned 7 different 4Runners ranging from Limited to TRD Pro and 3 different Lexus GXs so I am definitely knowledgeable about KDSS from actual practical perspective.

I'll see what aftermarket can help, event
The 5th gen will always have a very special place in my heard, because 2 of then provided 12 years of my best adventures and memories😊.
I love my 2024 Trd Off Road Premium for all of those reasons! Great video!!!!!
My 4th gen will last 30 yrs too. Awesome truck!
THE 2 MOST COMMON WAYS TO ASK.MAYBE IN JAPAN THAT'S HOW THEY ASĶ BUT YOUR IN THE UNITED STATES.
So glad I bought my 2018 4Runner TRD Pro; it’s been perfect
The fact that there are this many points is unreal- sold!!
Thanks David, I am glade i purchased a 2023 40th year shes a keeper!!
I absolutely LOVE my 2023 TRD OR! I plan on keeping it 30+ years! Thanks so much for this video and re-enforcing my purchase!
Thanks George!
I agree! Love em so much I purchased 3 in the past 4 years. a 2021 ORP, 2022 ORP and 2023 SR5. Last big vehicle purchases for a long time.
30 reasons why I'll keep my 2023 4Runner LTD for a long time!
Just purchased (07/06/2024) a new 2024 SR5 Premium in Ice Cap. Love the look and ride of the vehicle. Glad I grabbed one before the 2025's. Great review !! Thank you !!!
Incredible machine David. Simplicity all the way.
I purchased 2024 TRD Off road in April...love it!! ❤❤
Traded in my 23 Tacoma for a used 21 4Runner, and so glad I did, powertrain and ride quality is head and shoulders about the Taco..I'll drive it until the wheels fall off. Love it!
Very Blessed to have snagged a '24 a tiny bit below MSPR before they go away.
My 2020 TRD Off Road (non premium) w/KDSS is a long term hold.
My wife and I bought one in May. 👍💪🏅
I love my 18 SR5 4x4. It drives like a tank, but handles like a sports car. I love the Old School 1GR and 5 speed slush box. It’s so smooth.
My v8 4runner is 19 years young and still runs like new.. im expecting it'll easily make it for another 20 with regular maintenance..
I wish I could have a v8 in this gen 4runner.
Got a 2005 Lexus GX470 with 200k, runs like a champ.See no reason it won't run at least another 10 years
Keep changing the oil and filter every 4000 miles and it will last you forever
And yes, she goes off-road for camping adventures, i just baby it and look after it 😊
David, If people in the Salt Belt want their 4Runner to last 30 years they better rustproof it! 😁
Most trucks rust in the rust belt. Lanoline undercoating ftw.
@@555atUyeah we have annual rust proofing coating that costs like 100-200 and you reapply every year.
Every oil changes, I roll around under mine to check any surface rust and spray them rust proofing to stop them from growing.
@@AutobodytechRon what do you use for spray?
NH oil undercoat on my 4Runner.
Thanks for this video, David! This video prompted me to say yes to the dealer when he told me that a new 4Runner was coming in with no buyer yet. It's suppose to arrive next week.
Well played - I’m in love with my 23
I just purchased a ‘24 TRD PRO, the last V6 Terra color. Thank you for your video, it really helped me with my decision. This SUV will last me 30 years! I’m so excited 🎉
Love the 5th gen 4Runner!
Absolutely love this video. Based on the recent video on the new landcruiser, it seems the 5th gen 4runner is better built, for now.
We have a lot of Toyotas in our family, but between just me and my wife we have a 23 Camry 14 limited 4Runner and a 04 Tacoma single cab 4x4, They serve us well!
Love the Solar Octane. My favorite!!
Hi David, love your channel, can you please make a video on your prediction and release of the redesign RAV4 with what you think will change and be updated? Interested in more specifically in a redesign RAV4 prime. Thank you. I love the information you provide.
Great review David! You're right on all 30 counts.
My 3rd gen limited only lasted 25 yrs....because I sold it, ... for $20k!
Dave I’d listened to you, just bought a 24 4Runner limited
Good move!
Get them while you can…. The turbo i4 garbage is just around the corner
Well they are already having issues with that new 6th gen powertrain in the Tacoma and LandCruiser.
Plus hybrid requires premium fuel.
Awesome review. Thank you.
Thank you David!
I tried the new Land Cruiser recently and was shocked how light the rear gate was when compared to my 22 4Runner. It was feather light.
Love my 2017 4x4 4Runner ❤
You have the front camera?!? Nice!
2020 ORP owner here. Best truck ever
The only upgrade from a 4Runner is GX460 or LX570. But as an off roader, 4Runner is better.
Thank you for all the info I have a 2024 sr5 premium and I love it in every way one of the best vehicles in the world the Toyota 4runner all the way
My 2003 4 runner with over 200,000 miles had to be retired early with a rusted frame.
1st class video Sir!!! Love my 2023 4Runner Offroad Premium. It will most likely outlive me...
One of the last great Toyota vehicles. I'm happy with mine.
Amazing video on this, thank you.
Loved watching this to justify my 4Runner ❤
David what do you think of the longevity of softex vs leather?
Sir, is the moonroof meant to allow a few drips of water when I go into a car wash for example or if it rains heavy?
Would like to get your opinion on the Land Cruiser Diesel. We rented one for 17 days and drove on every road in Iceland. Through lots of rivers and streams. No problems whatsoever.
Thank you for this information, I do appreciate it.
Question: Is the new Underground color/undercoat still painted on 2024 4runner's with old 5th generation standards, or same thinner paint (and undercoat) such as the newer/current standards currently used on alternative toyota models painted the same underground color?
Well since solar octane is also a new color you have the same results as he showed on this video.
@Offshore1977 Thanks, I understand that underground is also painted on other toyota models,... I'm not sure If solar octane paint is exclusive to 4runner only
All the paints on the current gen 4Runners use the older style paint process
Is the HVAC a push button on the 24' TRD ORP? Or did you order this option? Nice 4Runner!
Built to last. Thanks so much!
Would you suggest KDSS as an option?
Absolutely
Can you make a video on the 2nd gen Honda CR-V? I think they’re very durable also and would be very interesting to see your perspective. Hope you can! Cheers
David- you and Ahmed convinced me to go out and buy a 5th gen! Bought a beautiful OFP in Underground.
Thanks to you, I’m waking around telling my friends about Tahara Factory 😆
@@ASChin Nice post. What is ‘underground’?
@@patfrancisco9646 Underground is a sort of glossy, volcanic gray color for '24 5th gens
Thank you again for the knowledge.
If any other manufacturer built a vehicle as solid, reliable, and with overall quality like the 4Runner, it would be an $80k vehicle.

4runners are a Toyota masterpiece.
Great videos you have David!! What are your thoughts on KDSS for a 4 runner?
I love my KDSS. Handles better on road than non KDSS models. Same goes off road, better articulation. Best thing is that it is automatic. No need to turn on and off the system.
As with any 4Runner, just make sure you remove any salt spray from the frame and or undercoat it if you live in the north.
For some reason David never comments on KDSS 4Runner. I think he has never drove one or test rode one before.
@@AutomotivePress It does David thank you!!
