    Great video, I have a 21 Jeep Wrangler. Yes I know it's not a Toyota but we all have to start somewhere LOL. I just completed the same maintenance where I did the front and rear axles and transfer case. The dealers starting price is $450 for the maintenance, along with the other checks that they do during that service. I looked at him like he had two heads when he told me the price. My cost for the fluids was $115 with about 90 minutes of my time.

    Tip 1: If you do happen to over grease the slip yokes (wink, wink), just remove a zerk fitting and drive around for a bit. The excess grease will be forced out of the hole were the zerk fitting was, then just reinstall the zerk fitting and hit the area with brake clean.
    Tip 2: Gold Plug and Dimple make a high quality magnetic plug that replaces the transfer cases stock non-magnetic plug.
    Tip 3: You can upgrade your brake fluid to a DOT 5.1. This will help if your doing heavy towing as DOT 5.1 is glycol-base, compared to DOT 5 being silicon based, and is compatible with DOT 3, but has a much higher boiling point: 500 degrees dry and 356 degrees wet.

    Are the rear diff washers a different size from the front fill washer? Your video lists the front fill as: 12157-10010 and the rear as: 125157-10010. Hey Jason! Thanks for putting this video together. It was so helpful! Quick question re oil fill levels for the rear differential. I drive a 2018 4Runner SR5 (same vehicle as your dad). I noticed that the rear diff held more oil than the manual indicates before it began to drip from the fill plug. Mine took roughly 3.25 qts as opposed to the 2.9 qts indicated in the manual. I confirmed vehicle was 100% level prior to performing the service. Did you notice the same thing? Should I be concerned I've overfilled the rear diff?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  3 месяца назад +1

      So the SR5 does take more than others because it doesn’t have a rear locker. I’m guessing you’re probably fine.

    As a Toyota tech I approve. But I wouldn't pump in till you see grease come out, you are essentially breaking the rubber boot seal for the u-joint....

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  5 месяцев назад +12

      Yeah I know people disagree on that topic. As a diy (not pro) mechanic I was told it’s good to expel a small amount of old grease and grime to keep the seals fresh and clean them… but not overdo it because that blows out the seals like you said.

    • @jimmyj5038
      @jimmyj5038 5 месяцев назад +2

      How much should you pump?

    • @LOLZZ184
      @LOLZZ184 5 месяцев назад +10

      @jimmyj5038 As silly as it sounds, by feel. When you connect the grease fitting, you feel it "latch" then as you go to pump the handle. You feel it pump easily. You know when you're done when you feel resistant on the handle while pumping.
      Pumps vary depending on the needs of the vehicle.

    Toyota gear oil is EXPENSIVE. I will challenge you though, a quality 75W90 GL-5 gear oil (Mobil 1, Delo, Valvoline, etc.) will not damage your diff. In fact, many dealerships don't use Toyota gear oil for a drain and fill service on the diff or transfer case.
    As a note, some hardcore off roaders recommend that you use dino / conventional oil and just change more often. East Coast Gear supply, a diff manufacturer recommends dino oil.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  5 месяцев назад +1

      I'm sure it's fine. I know that's what Nitro Gear uses as well. They used 75W90 GL5 synthetic on everything. I'm just going to match the owners manual since everything is stock and it costs almost the same. 75W90 is much easier to get locally.

      Yeah I am totally okay with changing my transfer and diffs with 75w90 GL-5. toyota uses that. IF you change it, you're miles ahead. The fact youre reading this means you care.

    • @trailrunnah8886
      @trailrunnah8886 Месяц назад

      Yeah, I've used 75/90 in mine when I did the diffs. I actually put it in the t-case too. That was about 70k miles ago, so I'm gearing up to do this again soon. I am going to use the correct Red line in the tcase this time though, when I originally did this I just bought the gear oil locally and did not realize the difference.

    OEM wiper inserts should last a lot longer than a year, I leave my 4Runner in the Florida sun and they last 3+ years. I've had it over 7 years now.

    Everywhere I saw everyone runs 75w90 in the TC.. so is this MT-LV stuff the same as 75w85? I see redline had both which one is the one to go with if not 75w90.

    @7:10 You mentioned that you were slightly at fault for the dealer not doing the lubrication job. How can one make sure the dealer or any shop did it?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  4 месяца назад

      As far as I know the only way to tell is a visual inspection (does the shaft look super dry) and you can also tell when putting new grease in. If you pump a lot into the u-joints and you hear a bunch of dirt and air leave the joint then it was likely not lubricated for a long time… like mine was.

    Just on my oil change done by my local dealership. The person must have used a impact gun on my oil fiter . And the drain on the filter . I had to use the breaker bar to remove the oil filter plaster housing. Of course they denied it.

      Due to my job and the limited time I was home. I used a local oil change business for the oil changes. When I switched jobs I started doing my own oil changes again. They had barely tighten the filter. I could literally twist it with my finger tips. They were just making it easier for themselves. They used a larger universal fit oil plug gasket and when looking at the indentations on it. That gasket was last a millimeter away from leaking.

    Where should I put the level on my 4runner to make sure its completely level? Looks like you did it on the running board, my doesn't seem super straight. Part of the frame perhaps? How big of a deal is it if its not perfectly level but close?

    My 2022 ORP is a pavement queen. It’s hardly ever seen 4WD. Only in 4WD every couple of months for a few seconds to “ lube it up”. Do I still need to change the front Differential and transfer case oil?

    That's a bummer that the lock 'n lube grease gun didn't work for that one grease fitting. Do you know if they make any adapters? It's a really nice product, but don't want to spend the money for it if it's not going to work for all the fittings.
