I have a 99 4Runner that I bought new. Made in Japan and has almost 350k. I have the same mechanic since day one. Will drive it until either I or the vehicle dies.
I’ve got 295,000 on my 98 4Runner. Just got the ujoints and oil changed. Runs amazing and so smooth. Don’t think the timing belt has ever been changed 😁👍🏻
'02 3rd gen 4Runner owner here. Permanently removed rear seats and built a flush deck because I frequently camp in it. Swing-gate rear bumper, winch on front. 2" lift. Not a rock crawler but as a field Geologist, it does everything I want it to. 224,000 miles. CA car, super solid; I'll keep it forever.
My 2005 Tundra has 320,000 miles on her. Still running strong. Had transmission and rear U joint go out around 56,000 . It was repaired under extended warranty. Just replaced front end around 215,000 miles. Need to replace valve cover gaskets. Only replaced U joints once spark plugs a couple times. Just mainly oil changes.
I have a 1994 t100 it has a 100,000 miles on her and she sat for 18 months in my dads garage. Started right up put air in the tires we drove from Maryland to MB, SC. She is a sweet pick up. Original paint. My dad kept her up. But she runs. Ppl keep trying to buy it we say NO! Love my pick up.
I have a 1998 limited 2wd as my daily. Im just a little over 254000 . I have an oil leak somewhere from the Back of the engine near the firewall I'm guessing. The thing is a tank and I love it. Back window still rolls down perfectly. No lift straight stock.. Best vehicle ever made. Has outlived all my family and friends newer vehicles..🤣
A few key words, made in Japan, very little maintenance. I got some quotes for service from the closest Toyota dealership, gouge me for a spark plug change on an 03 4-runner V6(every 100k miles), $380.00, lol. I called a nearby Toyota dealer [cup race car owner], and they quoted me a reasonable price on a lot of different services, wow. Over 20 presidential awards.
I've had a '98 since 2017, what a great buy. I traded in a '16 WRX for it and the equity in the Subaru paid for the Toyota, got it out the door for $7895. w/ 91k miles on it.(sold subee to Autolenders) Never looked back. Just drove it from NJ to FL. No hiccups. Will always have this vehicle or one like it, in my fleet.
Have a 2011 Trail version with the KDSS; thing has been indestructible so far. The quality is freakishly amazing--I don't know how else to describe it. The "Made in Japan" Toyotas are the best.....
@@richsweeney1115 hondas behind toyota....what toyota has done with the 4runner, the rav 4 & the tacoma is unbelivable...cant blame honda....i doubt even toyota would be able to top itself after that
I bought a 1992 Forunner V6 manual a lot of years back for just $200. It had been driven into a flooded Creek crossing and engine hydrolocked, snapped #6 conrod. I bought a used rod from a breaker out of a scrap blown engine dropped the sump replaced #6 rod, used the original piston and rings, only removed and replaced the left side cyl head to do the job. That Toyota ran perfectly for years after, had near half a million klm on it when I sold. Sure are right Scotty, great vehicle.
I picked up a 1999 last year for $5600. 250k miles and I’ve had zero issues. Got it lifted 2 inches bigger wheels and tires. I got rock crawling into campsites and I loveeee this thing.
I bought my basic 99 10 years ago for 4k with 143k miles. Still have it now 190k. Awesome vehicle. Just gas and go. transmission is smoother than a lot of vehicles I have owned.
Yes the timing belts break. The one on my 96 Limited V6 went out at 120k miles. Luckily, it shredded slowly so I heard it slapping the cover and got it changed before it snapped somewhere leaving me stranded. Otherwise ZERO issues. Overall one of the best vehicles I've ever owned.
Hi is that vehicle very much like the Toyota land cruiser Colorado is this what we have in the UK 🇬🇧, but hard to get a Gooden if I can’t it’s going to have to be a pick up truck Toyota Hilux oh well.
@@miteco1 I’m going to look at a ‘99 4runner (3.4 L v6) with 122,000 miles on it. From the dealership video, it appears very clean, no rust on the frame, etc. Assuming the dealership has no record of the timing belt being changed, how can I tell otherwise?
My first car in high school was a 97 4Runner. White and silver. :) I had a freak accident in it and flipped 4-5 times. I walked out of the car. It was amazing! Sadly, it was totaled. If it hadn’t been, I bet it’d still be running great. :)
I own a 2019 with the TRD Off-road package, and have owned (3) 3rd generation models. Best vehicles ever built! Sure it doesn’t have all the modern technology and luxuries, but if you want a super reliable vehicle that’s bullet proof and has great resale value, then a 4Runner is for you!
I reckon if you've still got one keep it, best vehicle you'll ever own, fuel costs are all you'll ever spend on it, everything else just keeps on going.
@@gazzafloss I still have it! I do not ever plan on selling it. Wish I kept one of my 3rd gen models, as I have been actively looking for one. They are impossible to find for a descent price nowadays.
I’ve got an 08 SR5 with about 100K on it when I got the vehicle, what a tank! I’ve driven a 2000 and an 18 and all of those are just solid, solid vehicle. The 2000 has 260,000 on it and is still going strong! 100% recommend these to anyone!
I had a 99 2WD and they do last foreever. They ride kind of rough but it's a tough suspension so it's trade off. I got 21-22 on the highway after cutting a bigger hole in the air box for more air flow. A little more midrange power too. Hauled a few cars on my car trailer with it too. Plenty of torque.
My first vehicle was an 07 4Runner. I absolutely loved it. I recently bought a brand new one, good on road and fantastic off road. Only vehicle I think I would want more is a Land Cruiser
In Australia Land Cruisers are viral, tough and reliable as hell, you can cross the country towing your trailer while volcanoes are exploding in the middle of a storm.
Back in the day, the late 80's, I bought a brand new 4 cylinder, 4WD, Toyota Pickup from the Dealer. After adding about 8k in bolt on parts, Inc. bigger tires & body lift, it was featured in 4 wheel & Off Road Magazine and shown on t.v. Ah yes, the good old days, I do miss them. Had to sell it in the mid nineties, as the family started growing. 😲😲😲
I recently Inherited a 98 3rd gen my brother gave me that he owned since new. As a master technician I have been the only one that has ever worked on it. I have 233,000 miles on it now and have always done the required maintenance either on or before time and it still runs like new. I wouldn't hesitate to drive cross country at the drop of a dime. There's a reason why the 3rs gen 4runners continue to be the most sought after platform after all these years and hold their value.
I had a 92 Toyota Corolla Sedan it had 375,000 miles on it. It ran like a Timex watch. Had to get rid of it because it rusted out underneath.. Very reliable and never leaked any fluids.
When I get mine- with little to no rust- I'll have it sandblasted on the frame and heavy metal and then RE-COATED with MILITARY GRADE undercoating and protectant....
I bought my 97 4Runner 25 years ago and that’s when I was still single. Fast forward, my college 20 year old son still using it for a few years now and when he gets tired with it, I want to take it back 😀.
I have a manual one of these, 26 years old, almost all Original stock parts, no codes, ac, all power stuff works, I’ve definitely done some not so good stuff to it, runs incredibly smooth, I can’t even see the engine shaking
I've got a '98 Limited with less than 70k original miles. Undercoated & rustproofing when i bought it 26 years ago. TRD Supercharged, Borla cat-back exhaust & garaged its entire life. Taking offers 🤔
I just bought and finally received a new 2022 4Runner Limited. Absolutely love the truck. Great looking with an old school vibe (like the Land Cruiser). Drive quite well. A little choppy here and there, but not too bad. Resale is second to none.
Currently driving a 99 4 Runner Limited. 204k miles, no rust, in beautiful shape. My uncle bought it new in 99 and babied it. Great car. Mechanics always rave on how great my old car looks and runs. 😀
This is so funny. I'm looking for a driveshaft for my aunt's 2001 4Runner. It has 292,000 miles. I asked why she wants to fix that old thing. She says it is good for another 100,000 miles.
I bought a 2007 Honda Pilot AWD base model brand new. It has 60,000 miles now. I used it for long trips and towing my utility trailer full of firewood. Runs like new. I love the car. Wife has a 2002 Honda Accord V6 deluxe model. She's put 120,000 miles on it. Runs like new. Great for trips too. Only had to replace the CD player, battery, spark plugs, and whatever else minor stuff. Love that car too but it's hard to get in and out of because it is so low and I'm so fat.
...fate brought me a 2000 Toyota 4Runner.....after Harvey flood (2017) destroyed my two vehicles, the 4Runner was the only transportation I could find within 300 miles.....my son brought it to me on a flatbed trailer from Ft. Worth.....heck, I did not even know what a 4Runner was at the time, but after driving it for only ten minutes, I fell in love.....6 months later I bought another 2000 4Runner....same model and drive train (3.4 V6 2WD).....I have done restoration on both and have them dialed in to original performance......I think they will outlast me... :)
2WD is bulletproof and is all most people will ever really need. I have a 2001 Tacoma and I love it as well. So much visibility and easy to drive nothing like modern ones.
My 01 has an evap code and needs a downstream 02 sensor. I still get 21mpg driving it daily and clear them with the Innova code reader Scotty recommended.
Thanks Scotty for the info 👍. I have a 94 4Runner and have blown gasket with milky oil stick and heavy smoke coming from the tail pipe. I think about getting a New engine put in it and keeping for some more yrs to come . I'm actually rebuilding it last yr I put a transmission in it but for yrs hey to turn it on Man the engine is strong You are right about that I think if I did live Wash DC I wouldn't have had them problem
I’ve owned two 3rd gens and a coworker owns a 3rd gen since new only thing to be carefull for on these trucks is avoiding the strawberry milkshake when the radiator gives up and Frame rust so if you find one with a clean frame just slap an external tranny cooler and it will out live 90% of the cars trucks newer than it
Paid 2300 for mine, no rust. bought it with 298k miles, now 361k its time to replace all the suspension so I'm going to replace it with toytec lift. Long term im thinking solid axle swap and v8.
Just bought a 2001 fully loaded 4x4 Toyota 4Runner. Just hit 200k miles and the timing belt is already changed. Got it for 5k and California owned its whole life!!!! No rust, no oil leaks, nothing wrong!!! I got really lucky 🍀
my friend owned a vehicle like that. his was lifted with brush guards all around. it looked and was fun offroading. the running boards were very helpful and then he removed them.
I had a 1996 Toyota Hiace diesel. Abused the crap out of it for 20 years, 2 cambelts, no issues. Sold it for top dollar. Even the aircon was still ice cold.
I have a 2001 4X4 4-Runner I bought new, has 165K miles has spent it's entire life in Alaska. Best vehicle I ever had and will keep it as long as I can. The original brakes lasted 15 years and 100k miles. Had to replace the cassette tape / CD radio with a new modern one when the buttons got so worn the numbers were no longer visible. It still runs great and looks great. It gets about 15 Mpg.
I bought my 97 V6 4wd limited, just like this one, last july after watching your original review on a 4Runner. I got it for a little over $5k total, to include those pesky dealer fees. All I had to do was put a muffler on it, change the alternator, spark plugs and wires, and two tires, and an oil change. I am getting ready to change the other two tires and the radiator, and I had the battery, terminals bolts, wires, and starter changed because a bad mechanic had me waste my money. All together, great vehicle if you take care of them, and I baby mine. The only major issue was a previous owner or mechanic did a bad job with the windshield and the seal is coming up and it's rusting around the channel, but nothing some JB Weld Steel Stik Epoxy Putty can't fix as windshields and rust are expensive if done right. The previous owner went to college I think in Idaho and was from Virginia Beach, or vice versa. But I got it with about 200k miles, and now it's about 230k, we don't drive it very far.
I had a 94 4Runner with over 250000 miles only small thing wrong. I have a 2007 4Runner sport with 200000 with nothing wrong. Love them. Some modular thing is out and all the 4WD stuff is out. Only 2WD now till fixed but still a super strong vehicle
I have a 2000 limited with 129000 I bought for 3500 bucks. Recently I had the starter solenoid fail, that's it, it was the original starter! I put in aftermarket stereo head! I love the 4runner! Yeah, it sucks gas but I'm not disappointed!
This are the reasons I don’t want to get rid of my 2006 4runner. 160k miles but feels and drive like a baby. The paint it’s starting to fade to the point I am uncomfortable driving it around d town 😢 paying $3000 dlls for a paint job it’s painful, specially in a almost 20 yr old vehicle
Love my 5VZ-FE engine. I changed the original timing belt after 200k and 20 years and by the time I got all the way in there and took the cover off, it looked like friggin king tut all dried out and cracked as anything. It was still holding on though.
@@miteco1 why not just maintain it like you're supposed to.....you can technically go 10k on oil changes...doesn't mean it's a good idea...like, that timing belt could have broke goin 75 down the highway, yea your motor would be fine..but having you car.or truck stop running at 75 or more isn't fun, and you can definitely cause an accident if you're not careful
I have a 92 toyota pickup dlx 3.0l v6 5spd with 85,000 original miles it was lucky enough to get the toyota factory frame replacement the paint was the only flaw until a lady pulled out of a gas station and totalled it they offered me $8000 to take it I took $5000 to keep it

She will also keep my 1963 MGB Roadster...
I have a 99 4Runner that I bought new. Made in Japan and has almost 350k. I have the same mechanic since day one. Will drive it until either I or the vehicle dies.
250000miles on one timing belt that’s crazy. Just shows how well Toyotas are built.
Incredible
There have been a few Hondas like that
Mine had 350,000. 2003 Lexus GX470
I’ve got 295,000 on my 98 4Runner. Just got the ujoints and oil changed. Runs amazing and so smooth. Don’t think the timing belt has ever been changed 😁👍🏻
@@BigDawgStatusIV change that timing belt mann
My brother brought a 2021 limited 4Runner. I live in Wisconsin and I tell ya, the snow is nothing whenever I drive it. Such a wonderful suv.
Hey 👋 how are you doing today?
10 days ago I bought a 2021 4Runner, 19.5k miles on it.
Had 400,000 on my old one when I sold it for as much as i paid for it . Love my 4runners!
We just changed out the radiator in our 2000 4runner. 22 years on one radiator is pretty darn good. We love our yotas!
Love my pick up.
the value of 4Runners just went up more with Scotty;s endorsement.
not all toyotas are great though. ive owned mazdas that had far less problems than the toyotas ive owned
Keep it up. Trying to sell my 3rd gen because I bought a 4th gen V8.
I just bought a 2000 4 runner with low miles. I'm very happy. EVERYTHING WORKS
😁👍
Pretty common to see the valve cover gaskets leaking bu this point Not a huge deal,$500-600 to fix and replace them
it is the rear main seal, $40 part, $800 to remove the transmission to get to it
A few key words, made in Japan, very little maintenance.
I have myself a 98' 4Runner. I love that I can fit my 9' 8" surf board in through the limo window.
Hey 👋 how are you doing today?
No, Hondas and toyotas made in Japan are the best.
My daily driver is 2000 4runner with 241k miles... running strong!!!
Yes!!! love your "Vintage" car reviews man! 80's, 90's, 2000's.... in this day of upside down, this is it
Hey 👋 how are you doing today?
No car to buy? Dig out that 1980s car from the barn and fix it up!
@clarastephen0192 are you into 4runners my lady?
Luckily, it’s a non interference engine, so if it breaks, it doesn’t destroy the engine, it only leaves you stranded.
Hi is that vehicle very much like the Toyota land cruiser Colorado is this what we have in the UK 🇬🇧, but hard to get a Gooden if I can’t it’s going to have to be a pick up truck Toyota Hilux oh well.
changed my '99 Limited belt and water pump at 122k after 22 years. will change belt #2 @ 250k...why not?
@@miteco1 I’m going to look at a ‘99 4runner (3.4 L v6) with 122,000 miles on it. From the dealership video, it appears very clean, no rust on the frame, etc.
Assuming the dealership has no record of the timing belt being changed, how can I tell otherwise?
I'll eventually get a 3rd gen 4x4 4runner. I just got an 01 Tacoma, Rwd, but am excited about it.
My first car in high school was a 1998 4Runner in black, that baby was a good vehicle. I moved on, but it is worth more than my used BMW now 😂
@lucian vallentine yeah they just do not hold their value at all on the used market.
@@LazerC4 not to mention they’re absolute money pits
I have a 1999 Tacoma,never getting rid of it 😂
My first car in high school was a 97 4Runner.
Do you think the new ones are reliable at all I want one?
@@blacksheepsociety3868 yes, they are very reliable!
98 2WD here. What did you do to the air box? Did you follow some DIY for this? Getting 23 rn but I want to cut the temp down in every way possible
What about the known head gasket failures on these older models? I understand they are 'very expensive' to repair them.
Scotty's going to 5M subs! Congrats, Scotty!
Bought my 98 from my cousin as my first car ever and I love it. It’s honestly one of the best vehicles I could have asked for as a first car
I had a 92 Toyota Corolla Sedan it had 375,000 miles on it. It ran like a Timex watch. Had to get rid of it because it rusted out underneath.. Very reliable and never leaked any fluids.
My grandpa owns a 94’ manual transmission 4Runner. What an amazing car!
Gosh I love Scotty and his passion and car knowledge
My friend has a 1998 she got new. Still runs great.
Scotty loves the older cars with manual transmission and no rust.
When I get mine- with little to no rust- I'll have it sandblasted on the frame and heavy metal and then RE-COATED with MILITARY GRADE undercoating and protectant....
Love my 98 limited! I have to patch a few holes in the frame but its still worth it! Last vehicle ill ever own. Baby the crap out of it 💚
I baby my 98 limited as well. Only vehicle I'll ever want to own. Mine is desert dune pearl. What color is yours.

Just got an 02 with 208k for $2500
Going to take care of it and hope we go a long time
I've got a '98 Limited with less than 70k original miles. Undercoated & rustproofing when i bought it 26 years ago.
TRD Supercharged, Borla cat-back exhaust & garaged its entire life.

These have rear differential lock?
This is so funny. I'm looking for a driveshaft for my aunt's 2001 4Runner. It has 292,000 miles. I asked why she wants to fix that old thing. She says it is good for another 100,000 miles.
Why do you need a new driveshaft can’t you just replace the U joints?
@@stevenlefebvre2991 I wish. My aunt bought it salvage. The driveshaft is a little bent causing it to vibrate like crazy.

...fate brought me a 2000 Toyota 4Runner.....after Harvey flood (2017) destroyed my two vehicles, the 4Runner was the only transportation I could find within
300 miles.....my son brought it to me on a flatbed trailer from Ft. Worth.....heck, I did not even know what a 4Runner was at the time, but after driving it for
only ten minutes, I fell in love.....6 months later I bought another 2000 4Runner....same model and drive train (3.4 V6 2WD).....I have done restoration on both

Love my 5VZ-FE engine. I changed the original timing belt after 200k and 20 years and by the time I got all the way in there and took the cover off, it looked like friggin king tut all dried out and cracked as anything. It was still holding on though.
