@@user-bh3so1wo6t a lot of people are spooked by the milage on the odometer especially when it's over 200,000 miles but don't be worried as it's how well the previous owner took care of it and whether they used it or abused it and the preventive maintenance done or not done not how many miles driven. New vehicles if you notice are warrantied up to 5 years or 100,000 miles the 5 years is the loan or lease period and the 100,000 miles is the break-in period from new 0 miles so after break-in period the milage is your true wear and tear.
I used to work at a Toyota dealer in the Parts dept. I had a 4-Runner come in for maintenance parts. It had over 650k miles in it and ran very nice. It was 20 years old! Worth every penny to buy one
You're right Scotty Kilmer .I drive my wife's 2003 Honda Pilot , it has 124,000 miles on it and still feel the same as new on the 1st day I drove it home out of dealer😊👍
Bought my 07 Mitsubishi Outlander over 3 years ago and the only things I had to change on it is the battery and brakes. The engine is so quiet that sometimes I forget it's on when idling. It has 217,000 miles and still has a lot of power. I love it!
I bought a base model 2009 Highlander with 140K on it a few months ago. I've already put almost 10K on it and it's only issue so far (knock wood) is the knock in the intermediate steering shaft. One of my favorite cars to date. Gonna put a trailer hitch on it and go RVing. it's the V6.
Been driving a 2015 Pilot for a little over six years now. Around 67k miles on it, and no issues so far. Not a very exciting ride, but carries all the people and stuff you need it to, comfortable for long trips, and the VTEC on the NA V6 sounds pretty nice when you put your foot down, not like the turbo 4s in all the new vehicles.
I have one as well, engine is bulletproof. I have 135k on mine. The only problem I have is the suspension, its not that great and you'll probably have to replace bushings and stabilizer links and maybe struts.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE his videos, his personality, his way of educating and the edits. Great video, content and education. He's Saved me money in the past.
March 27 - checking out prices of used 4-runners - whew, they’re expensive for their age. Mar 28, Scotty makes video proclaiming ‘4-runner is best used car’. Me checking prices again - Now I can’t afford them at all 😂
The used ones are not worth their price point. I don't care if they can go 350K miles. Fact is they are old and don't have the safety features and amenities the new vehicles have.
You're expecting fire sale prices on well built, well engineered vehicles? Did you sleep through that class on what happens when you have something that's low supply and high demand? If you can't afford it or won't pay the seller's price, someone else will. There's your explanation for the high resale values.
I have a 2006 4runner limited with 226k miles, and it is great shape. I wanted something with more interior space and jumped on this when I saw it used for a few years and would buy it again. Thank you Scotty for your opinion, and I could not be more happy with my 4runner. Cheers

Great compilation! Here in Canada the only issue is winter, they salt the roads every snowfall and you end up with rust buckets, even if the cars engine and transmissions are A1 ! And these suv's on your list are the ideal candidates for reliability given our climate conditions.
My wife has an 03 Pilot that currently has 389,000 miles on it. Numerous trips from Mississippi to Florida, Texas, and North Dakota have all been a worry free dream!
I do believe that the 2003 Honda Pilot came with a five (5) speed automatic transmission. I purchased an ‘05 six years ago, and that is the transmission that I have. Still going strong with 180,000 miles. Only problem is rust in the rear frame.
Scotty, I own a 2007 Lexus RX350 built in Canada. Had 158,000 miles on it when I bought it and I can attest to what you say. Solid vehicle and starts up with no problems. Shifts like a dream and yeah, when idling no shake. Has plenty of power as far as I'm concerned. Had some very bad weather this past February (snow and ice) but the AWD system did its job with no issues. Thanks for your vid!
I just sold my 2007 RX350 with 160k miles a few days ago. I was quoted for 8k in repairs so it was time to say goodbye. It was a fantastic car rip Gerald 2007-2021
@@bigpriv3762 No my friend. Dash is in very good condition and NO oil leaks. Vehicle was well taken care of by the previous owner. Also, leather interior is still in great shape as well.
I agree people should change their own oil so you know it's done right. You don't even know if they're replacing your filter or what oil they're adding. It's so simple.
Best vehicle I ever owned was a 2001 4runner limited 4wheel drive bought it in spring of 2009 with 106,000 miles on it I drove it 3 years then gave it to my son who drove it 6 years never had a problem with it in 9 years.

I had a '03 4runner v8 sr5. 220k miles. It was a rocket. A young punk turned in front of me and totaled it. I now have a 2010 Toyota Highlander. Love it!
I was lucky and bought a 2004 4 runner 4x4 with 170,000 miles for 5599 I’ve changed the fluids along with the battery and radiator down to the windshield washer pump and new wipers Took it on a 3000 mile trip to colo.n.m. And west Texas and not a single issue
Any vehicle after 200k miles you're throwing your money away, and you're relying the safety of your family in a piece of junk.... as an auto technician that's the honest truth...
Doubt it. I was a used car salesman and constantly tried taking them into quality stuff and to avoid crap. You would be amazed at how much people will still want the crap, even after showing them consumer reports and stuff. One lady told me the most important things were reliability and value. Then she insisted on looking at old BMWs with 100,000 miles and would not listen to me.
I got a 2007 built with 120k kilometers on it. It sounds just the same. No problem whatsoever. Just did the first gear fluid change. This is the only SUV to buy.
2005 Pilot 287K miles, original engine & trans, twice year round trip to Utah. Daily driven too, off as well durling rainy days "mud bogging" this Pilot has never failed once.
After recently breaking down (fuel pump) in our 2007 Pilot with 165,000 miles, I've been researching a replacement. At 69 and 78 years old and one of us disabled, we have a very low tolerance for getting stranded. We love the Pilot, plenty of room for our dog and whatever gear we want along, easy in and out, good visibility, and great on the beach. (We live on the Washington coast.) I'm wondering now if it's too soon to let it go...
Another great thing about your videos would be that you discuss things we don't know and never remember to ask. I have the same mechanic for 10 years. Faith ( in people) is important when it comes to wheels.
Scotty makes a great point about oil changes. My experience is do not take your car to these quick change places. If you don't believe me just watch the undercover videos of these places claiming to perform flushes and other nonsence, which they never do but charge for. Do it yourself or take it to a reputable dealer or better yet, an Independent shop.
I have a quick change place that I go to regularly. I was putting over 1000km on my vehicle every week, so I was there about once a month. At that interval, I was fine with the risk. As a regular customer, I built up a relationship, and I felt good about the service. If I had to change my own oil, it would rarely get done, even though it would cost much less, and my work hours rarely matched up with appointment places.
I absolutely LOVE mine. 2003 smaller v8 engine, 220k miles and runs so much smoother than my 2009 dodge journey with 150k miles 🤦♀️ getting rid of the dodge. Just bought and I swear it's junk. Owned 2 highlanders in the past 10 yrs that never gave me problems and safety features saved my life in both wrecks 🙏 these cars aren't cheap but WORTH THE PRICE!
I bought an 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 in 05 with 3,333 miles. It's now Dec 2021 and I still have it. Runs great. No major repairs. It still has the original headlight bulbs. Would highly recommend
@@accordwhip3467 So far so good. It does seem to strain more than would be expected towing a small camper. Kinda stays in lower gears for long periods of time.
After my last two vehicles gave me “ that great GM feeling” I and my family will NEVER buy a domestic made vehicle EVER!! However, my Honda experience has been OUTSTANDING! Honda or anything made in Japan is quality!
Snapped the timing belt in a 2005 Lexus RX330 (200K miles) , had it towed to my mechanic , $900 later : runs just like it did when I bought it,....... smooth. The only reason the belt needed replacement was because the previous owner had a NAPA substitute installed and it only lasted about 75K miles . These cars are serious value if bought at a reasonable price.
I have a 2008 Pilot, which in my opinion was it's best year. More importantly, it's got a little under a quarter million miles on it and all of ever done with it is get it serviced when the Maintenance Minder tells me to. It's still in great shape and I expect EASILY another 100,000 miles on it, probably a lot more.
@@andrewdugan6705 - I've gone by the book, so when the Maintenance Minder codes come on, I do what the owners manual tells me. So, yes, oil changes, as well as transmission, VTM and other fluids. Oil, obviously. And yes, I've done the timing belt twice. Also, when the timing belt is done, there are other maintenance items you can do, so I do them, because then it's just about part. Or rather, the mechanic does them for me. I had a motor on one of the two radiator fans go bad last summer, and I replace both fan assemblies, because it was too easy and cheap to not just do them both in one shot.
I really like this video on comparing the different older suvs. Scotty you need to do more videos like this comparing different vehicles back to back. This makes a great video. Really gives me insight on Toyota versus american-made vehicles. I've had Chevy trucks a 2009 2500 Silverado had nothing but transmission problems and then I also got a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 for personal use and then it also had a transmission problem. The 2011 after I got it had an issue but ever since then it hasn't had any problems and here we are in 2021 it only has 48,000 mi. But generally I have lost hope in American made trucks and I did have a 1991 Toyota 4Runner at one point and it was lifted and I guess it was a 3.0L 6 cylinder. With that v6 lifted and I was running 33 BF Goodrich mud terrains on there and pulling a 6x10 trailer with quads on it I had no problem getting up hills with that thing. it had a pretty slow take off when you going on to a freeway on ramp with a trailer fully loaded and the rear end fully loaded inside with with stuff but I never had any issues with that 4runner.. I think when I buy another truck I'm going to go back to buying a Toyota again. It's really nice to see that Toyota and Honda and Lexus and all these Japanese manufacturers have over the test of time proven that their vehicles are reliable just from this video. Good job Scotty for making this video very helpful. 👍
The Honda pilots are all time all wheel drive VTM-4 Lock® feature allows you to manually lock the rear differential in place, you cannot switch between 2WD and AWD on it.
I have a 2015 with the same sets. No problems yet with anything yet I’ve only been having maintenance done when the reminder comes on and only the recommendations it says. How is yours running?
Its true what Scotty says, learn to change your own oil. When I was young I worked at a gas station. Pumping gas and helping out the mechanic with oil changes. He asked one kid working their to change the oil on a car thincking he could do it. He replaced the filter and put the measured oil in. Back then cars took 6 quartes for the most part. Started it up and Oil started leaking out all over, he never drained the old oil! Nuckle head!
I LIVE IN THE SNOW BELT AND RUST BELT! I HAVE A 2002 4RUNNER LIMITED, OVER 200K MILES, OWNED IT FOR 12 YEARS. TAKEN GREAT CARE, IT STARTS LIKE A ROLEX. MINE IS OVERLANDER TO THE HILT. I HAVE BOUGHT NEW TRUCKS, NOTHING COMPARES TO THIS TRUCK FOR ME. GREAT VIDEO SCOTTY!
Great, and honest advice, especially helpful to me as I I've under the povery line and always have. Thank you. The giveaway is very kind as well Scotty your all that.
Here , The Only LOUDER ONE is SCOTTY.. but it's OK for a 67 y.o. Healthy Fellow. Hopefully You can Still Shearing Lots of your Wisdom and Experience for Long, Long Time. Good Job Scotty.👍🏼😎👌🏽
I'm still driving my 2008 RDX, still runs like a dream, best car ever! I'm about to give it to my son who's about to start learning how to drive next year so he can get good use or abuse it. Even with 158k miles on it, it still has original engine, stereo, AC/heater in excellent condition. I'm letting it go bc I need something that's more fuel efficient & don't really need AWD any more.
Thanks Scotty, good stuff. My 2007 Dodge Durango 4.7L SLT has 256,000 mi, still has original trans, only major work was replacing the A/C. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Smooth, quiet, powerful, steering is still tight.
*CORRECTION* the Honda Pilots came in FWD & 4WD drive and not RWD !!! Pilots with Honda's Variable Torque Management 4WD system (VTM-4) sent most power to the front wheels under normal driving conditions. Under acceleration or if wheel slippage is detected at the front wheels, up to 50% of power can be sent to the rear wheels.
Great review Scotty. I used to be a huge Honda guy, but since 50% of my transmissions went out (2008 Pilot paid $5,000 for a rebuilt, 1999 Accord 3 times paid over $4,500 but still running. My son has it.) and waiting on my 2001 Civic to go out. Not sure if it will because the wife only has 68,000 miles on it. When my 1993 honda civic hatchback was totaled after an accident and 250,000 miles and still running strong I went with the 2017 Lexus IS200t. I just hope this Toyota lasts 300,000 miles.
I have a 2013 Venza and my wife a 2007 Pilot both with everything still original except the Pilot is on its second exhaust system. We have been really happy with them.
I had a 2010 dodge journey until Feb 2023. It had 166000km and everything just started dieing and decided that was enough. Front stabilizer bar was going, a rear toe link broke completely (that was a fun experience) and there was something with the engine that was going and was preventing me from going more than 80kms/hr.
Don't worry if you bought an exploder you would still be in the same spot. After all Ford is above average for American quality. But bottom of the reliability ratings list
@Greg B i no longer have it. It consumed all my oil. I went in for an oil change and then not even 4K miles later it had maybe a quart of oil. I bought it used, had it inspected and everything. It just decided to crap out after about 10k of me owning it
Thanks for watching, this is a compilation of the best suvs for the money, 2 other good ones I left out are the Honda CR-V and Toyota Rav4, the best smaller SUVs

Thanks Scotty!! That’s my 2003 Honda Pilot! Sure do miss you here in H-Town! Thanks for all you do for military families!
How’s it holding up?
I have one as well, engine is bulletproof. I have 135k on mine. The only problem I have is the suspension, its not that great and you'll probably have to replace bushings and stabilizer links and maybe struts.
I’ve got an 2008 with 225k miles. Research said the 2015 was also a great version. What’s the feeling now

Dealerships are trying to sell most used 4Runners like they are still brand new.
@@IceManLikeGervin hehe - yeah. They don't want to miss out on the second-hand price boom like they did on the FJ.
Here in Canada the only issue is winter, they salt the roads every snowfall and you end up with rust buckets, even if the cars engine and transmissions are A1 !
And these suv's on your list are the ideal candidates for reliability given our climate conditions.

(We live on the Washington coast.) Another great thing about your videos would be that you discuss things we don't know and never remember to ask.

More importantly, it's got a little under a quarter million miles on it and all of ever done with it is get it serviced when the Maintenance Minder tells me to.
It's still in great shape and I expect EASILY another 100,000 miles on it, probably a lot more.
Have you done timing belt and such or just oil changes?
@@andrewdugan6705 -
I've gone by the book, so when the Maintenance Minder codes come on, I do what the owners manual tells me.
Why do I feel like this guy could sell a ketchup popsicle to a lady in white gloves? 🤔😂
