This is so cool! I would take a gray marker and touch up those tiny gaps where the foam is peeking through. This is a great product and I hope Coverlay expands their product lineup in the years ahead.
This is really what I need. Got a cracked dashboard on my 2006 Acura TL. The long, wide gap I heard is typical in that model and generation. 250 before tax is much better than the eye sore that I have to see every day.
You can paint over that center speaker cover with SEM interior dye (it's actually a flexible paint, not sure why they call it dye), and you'd never tell the difference. It turned out great. Nice work, Jimmy!! 🏆🏅🥇🎖
I was thinking the same, paint the older, exposed pieces before applying the cover and have a perfect match all the way around. Heat gun on the drivers side during fitment may have helped get the alignment and coverage you were looking for as well.
Looks awesome, Jimmy! You did an amazing job! And thank you so much for cluing me into Coverlay. I hadn't heard of them before and they have a cover for my 1986 Camaro if it comes to me needing to keep the dash that is in it. Your videos are always awesome and informative. Thanks for helping us joe schmos to fix our junk and keep it on the road without spending a fortune.
my 2008 Lex RX350 has the exact same cracks but its all on the passenger side. Why have ALL of my past Toyotas (probably like 6 by now) never had this prob? And they were old as heck!? Great vid!
Thanks much for your video on the dash. My Camry is a 2000 so I've been just a little uneasy about the age of the dash. I have Meguiar's Ultimate Interior Cleaner. I don't know how good it is to put moisture back into the dash. But I will give it a go. Secondly I have sun shades I use for the windshield they do greatly help. My Camry gets really hot in the Summertime. Your dash looks great. Seems like the other owner didn't care of the of the 4 Runner. People just amaze me. Why buy a vehicle if your not going to take care of it. I may get a carpeted dash cover for the Camry been thinking about it for a while now. Again thanks much for your video. Very helpful.
I have the exact same year and truck with a similar problem not as bad, but I do have some cracking. I’ve been looking into these and I found your video and I think I’m gonna get one myself.
For the top speaker on the dash. Glueing the pieces back together was a good idea. Then for extra reinforcement I would of done a layer of JB Weld on the underside and maybe even around those mounting tabs as well. By the way that dash cover looks wonderful! You did a fantastic job on it. I'm just like you when it comes to maintaining vehicles and want them to look there best. I always go way beyond and over service/ clean my stuff. 😂 It's nice to know I'm not the only one. Love your channel. Please keep posting more videos on the 4runner.
Just FYI guys as a former Toyota tech there is a factory recall for this exact issue on this model year and Toyota will replace the dash. Also the other models effected are. 2003-2005 Toyota 4Runner 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon 2007-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid 2004-2010 Toyota Sienna 2004-2008 Toyota Solara 2007-2008 Lexus ES 350 2003 -2008 Lexus GX 470 2006- 2008 Lexus IS 250/350 2007 Lexus LS 460 2004-2006 Lexus RX 330 2007- 2009 Lexus RX 350 2005- 2008 Lexus RX 400h
From my understanding it wasn’t a recall but an extension on the warranty. Also, it’s over 🤷♂️. Can you confirm if this actually is a recall AND if it’s still going?? Thanks!
I bought my '03 4Runner in 2015 second owner. When I took it back and asked about the dashboard being cracked they told me I was not eligible for the fix because I was not the original owner. So now so many years later It's a lot worse. Toyota is my favorite car but the The person at the dealer I talked with sucked😢
I recently did the same with my '95 4WD Suburban using a cover from Dash Skins. My original dash was split down the middle and the mounting screw bosses were also cracked, which made for a lot of vibration. The new dash cover looks like its fresh from the factory and perfectly color-matched Just be sure to use a lot of weight to press down on the dash as the silicone cures.
I learned allot...amazing....RUclips University top 10 in this category.... I wish I knew this ,,,,, I cant believe one part fits over the old one,,, at first I thought the old one had to b moved,,, Skills are Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your solution for that fried dash was the best choice, result is nearly factory fresh looking. I agree with @Morgorn1 about touching up the edge reveals with color matched marker and I am sure you do as well. I have an OBS f250 with an unusually well preserved dash pad that I am protecting with a synthetic overlay mat. Keep up the excellent video productions.
You know, so few people actually take care of the WHOLE vehicle, a little 303 on the dash or armor all twice a year, 10, maybe 20 minutes of maintenance in the method of wiping it down when it was bought and this wouldn't have cracked in the first place.
Nice job 👏👏👏 way better than before, what about changing central screen to add more vibes in the car, pioneer or Sony screen will look great with andioid auto and Apple car play
Looks great! I would just find some way to take that shiny armor-all type finish off it by coating it or something. Hate shiny dash boards in the sun lol.
Good job. I would've painted it though to get the factory color match. You could've used the paint to touch up those other areas with a brush that were bothering you too. I found this out back in the 90's when I ordered a trim part for a dashon an 80's car. The dealer got it and it was red when my dash was grey. The parts guy said they all come like that. You have to paint it
Whenever I replace a panel that has clips like those on the speaker cover, I apply just a small trace of some dielectric grease. Yeah, of course it has nothing to do with electricity, but I’m using the grease function to help the clip seat easier and also help keep squeaks away and to allow for easier disassembly later.
I have a 01 sienna. Never garaged, always out in the sun and the dash is perfect after all this time. 05 i think is when toyota changed the dash material to something that cracks. Sub par quality really.
That 4 runner had a recall on the dash in 2018 I think, Toyota may still honor it and replace the dash. We had a 2003 that they did the dash under the recall in 2019.
I would buy a tube of clear silicon adhesive that fits in a chalking gun. Make a bead about a 1/4", about twice the size you did. Mark with silver sharpy exactly where you want the beads before you start so you aren't considering the path on the fly. LEAVE some GAPS in the bead. Particularly on top and the area above the glove box facing the passenger (should have your method for holding that area down before you start with the silicone too). The plastic cover will expand and contract at a different rate than the stock pad underneath and there are huge temp swings on this part of interior. You need a more robust bead and you need to lay it down quickly. Make sure to leave occasional gaps in the bead so you don't trap air that will expand with heat and pop the cover up. Make ZERO complete circles with the silicone. It looks like a quality part, but if it is isn't bonded down well with almost no trapped air (leave small gaps in the bead), it will come lose. I would have cleaned the old dash with acetone and "Cheese Cloth" 1st too. Window cleaner is a poor choice IMO. I am assuming the instructions called for it but, NO. Glass cleaner is for cleaning glass. An Alcohol wipe to the underside of the new panel 1st is also called for. You want that silicone to stick good. Think about how hot this dash gets in the summer sun. NO TRAPPED AIR ALLOWED. No circles of silicone (not small areas or the major perimeter), leave a few gaps), fat beads, clean with organic solvent, not ammonia for a better result. How would I know? 30+ years as aerospace manufacturing Quality Engineer. The manufacturer is good at injection molding. It is a real science to make that part the exact right size. They really care about that fit and it shows. They don't know squat about installing it with silicone (I saw the instruction sheet). I hope you get lucky Jimmy.
Yeah I was going to post something about that myself. I was a Toyota tech and there was a factory recall on cracking dashboards that have to be replaced free on multiple models and years. I tried this cover on my Acura TL. It just won't settle down. The problem is that if the front is pressed down the back would be tilted up and peeling, if the left is pressed down, the right would be tilted up and peeling. I tried to pressed them down with weights for days to no avail. How did you solve this type of issue - peeling?
I wouldve got an actual replacement dash. I dont like that airbag cover solution at all. But if i only had the two options, i wouldve done the same as you, i hate the carpet far worse then any alternative

For flipping this is a real possibility, but that plastic will keep bleeding from behind the cover.
