@ralphsmallblock4367 I know I love it lol. Honestly I love Mustangs too, but for practical performance car that's actually reliable, the GR Carolla is probably leader of the pack. The Stang is a totally different segment but still awesome, especially that Dark Horse 2024 model, sexy af
Honestly, all 3 cars were impressive in their own way. The Corvette is essentially 25 years old, so in some way, it was the most impressive.
C5 is such a Good base.

Yep I have a GT just like that and this video just made me appreciate the GR and C5
It’s a Corvette man, against a Mustang and lowly Corolla, that it’s 25 years old is trivial.
Yeah and not even a good corvette. Just a base model, at least use a Z06
I will give credit to the GR. It's a tiny engine with an impressive performance
In terms of overall handling, performance and usability as a daily driver. The GR blows them away. The storage of a hatchback. Just as good if not better track handling capabilities. Plus awd & can could be converted into a rally cross to blow them away on rough country roads & snow. Along with eco mode for better mpgs...The engine could also still handle more boost to make 350- 400hp & still be reliable.
@michaelbrinks8089 how you know is reliable tuned at the maximum boost ? car is not even out yet 😂
@@alexsvilla7962 The car is already "out" But yeah, I haven't personally boosted one. Some people are saying they can handle 500hp of boost....So I said 350-400hp as a conservative estimate. To me the coolest part of this is that the GR held up incredibly well in a drag race... for a car that isn't known for going fast in a straight line. Throw all three of these cars onto a curvy road and see who can fly into/out of corners the best
Yeah those 400 kilograms more on the Mustang is going to hurt its cornering. But since its made for the American market that doesn't really matter, its mostly straight roads.
I don't know where these guys got the 3900 pound number for this mustang. The auto s197 gt weight around 3600 so it's only about 300 or so pounds heavier than the Corolla. Or about 136 kg more. I don't think that's enough to make a huge difference in the corners.

I love these old vettes. I remember seeing the first LS vette at a dealer in STL w my Dad in 1996. Was shocked to see the brochure stating a 4-something, 0-60, and a advertised. 1/4 at 13.2. A year later, I went to the mailbox and grabbed my CnD magazine in late 97, to read that they tested the 98 LS1 TA 4a, and it ran a 13.2 at 108. Check the archives. That was rather generous though. I've never driven that gen corvette, but I use to smoke them on the reg, in my old TFS, e-cam, bot on na Fox, though. Can't tell you how many t5 3rd gear inout shafts I blew through. During the rev, at the 3:50 race, it has sunk in, how heavy those flywheels must have been. All cars use to be that way though. veroooooooooooom opposed to vroom vroom. Would like to own a affordable, clean, 100k mile LS1 vette in the future, and nows the time, as clean examples are still cheap, but are increasing in price atm w no signs of slowing down. That C5 sounded great! The S197 was the all around best performance car there. And the Corolla was the one that I’d probably want as my daily, out of those 3.
One of the more random matchups I’ve seen but was just as, if not more entertaining. Cars from different classes and eras going head to head. Love it!
Honestly, not surprised about the results. That being said, the C5 is just beautiful, especially with those pop-up headlights. The 5th gen Mustang is retro done right and blew everyone's minds when it came out. The GR might be many things, but not a looker.

As for cornering, don't forget that it's japanese city compact vs american muscle car. As cornering goes, muscle cars weren't ever good at it and as I don't really know about the Mustang, I'm pretty sure that Corvette wouldn't go too fast. But I might be wrong, very much depends on the driver.

Interesting times for the vette 😆. I remember my old 1998 trans-am ls1 was pulling 1/4 mile times in the 13 sec area with a heavier body and SLOWER manual gearbox *auto is easier to launch!, so how a lighter vette was about 16 seconds is hilarious, they were never that slow.
From a roll, if you are using manual transmission then you should also downshift too to be fair, autos usually have a sport mode for that (that should have been utilized. )

As a former 3x Mustang owner and current STI owner, I gotta say I knew the corolla was gonna beat them. They didn’t mention if it was the LSD model or not, but if he had done a proper boosted launch he would have rolled the mustang too.
And at a racetrack it would have been bloody.
And in any sort of weather.
Dudes are super mad. That corolla handles like crazy too. And they sound better with an exhaust than I-4’s.
The important thing is that too many “car guys” aren’t driving enthusiasts, they’re fanboys who try to insult every other platform
Me? I love driving all different types of platforms. As long as they’re manual and analog as possible.
Stop bashing. Start driving things before you judge them.
Fun fact. Won’t hear many Mustang owners say this: but I had more fun in 1 afternoon rallying a stock fiesta st than I ever had with my muscle cars. Burnouts are fun too, but nowhere near as fun as liftoff oversteering that little crapbox fiesta st around on a rally type dirt road lol. Once you really start to get some car control stuff under your belt you start to see just how fun driving great handling cars is, especially if they’re analog and not having computers make them handle
The power of normally aspirated engines at 5000' is 84% of that at sea level, so the 420 hp Mustang was really about 350 hp in this test. The turbo engine with 25.2 psi of boost makes 94% of it's power at 5000' or 300x.94= 282 hp.
Great video again guys! The corvette isn't slow at all!
Thank you for watching.
This was a fun idea. The Mustang and the Coyote engine are incredible.
I'm not too sure about that when comparing it to the corolla engine the mustang has an extra 3.4 litres of displacement for roughly 4% added acceleration.
@@markgallagher5908 I just think a lighter car with decent horsepower and an all wheel launch is a formula that can beat pure muscle.
@@michaelgambuto4693 True but it doesn't take from the fantastic job that Toyota did in developing the car.
@@markgallagher5908sure, but you're doing the same thing. You're taking away from the fact that the coyote motor is an amazing engine. The only reason the gr was keeping up was because of the launch. The awd kept it in the race. Not the power output. Despite being behind from the launch. The coyote still steamrolled past the GR once they were going past 40. And kept going. Toyota did a good job with the gr, but for also did a good job with the coyote.
I would LOVE to see the GR Corolla race the 4.6 S197 GT from 2005-2010.
I have an ‘06 S197 GT, 5 speed. Also have a ‘10 STi. Both have a mild tune but that’s it. Figure 320hp (crank) or so, and similar torque. The cars aren’t too far apart in weight.
The Mustang will just spin the tires off the line with any aggressive throttle input. Once it hooks up, it takes off but then loses steam in the higher rpms.
The STi is tough to launch, unless you don’t care about breaking stuff. Being the owner of the car, I care, as does my wallet. So most of my “launches” have been soft basically slip the clutch at 2500rpm and then roll in to full throttle by 3500rpm. Once that car gets to 4000rpm, it jumps straight to the redline. Very exciting at the upper rpms.
The STi feels faster in most driving situations, but the S197’s low rpm torque is a lot of fun - and it’s still pulling at upper rpms, but you don’t get that rush of turbo boost. Very linear V8, which can make it feel slower but probably is very similar.
Will say that with the AC on, the Mustang doesn’t seem to even notice, whereas in the STi I have to change my shift points and the rpms drop faster between shifts. 😅
When stats are displayed or discussed, you guys should also throw in what you paid for each car in the tests.
This was fun! Yall really got me hooked with these random car mash ups
Thank you for watching.
I love Turbo Cars...11 years I lived in Japan, its funny to hear Americans talk about Turbos being unreliable. Turbo engine are built better right off the bat, we would go to Skyline heaven (SKyline Junk Yard) , those engines always ran good, always started ... breaking down was not even a thought....its Japanese. Another car that was popular was the v6 Tacomas, we would Super Charge them....again they were fine and ran better
They're over a mile above sea level. An NA car loses roughly 3% power for every 1000 ft above sea level. This means the Corvette and Mustang are down about 15% power (Corvette being 293hp and Mustang being 357hp at a mile above sea level).
Turbo cars don't experience nearly as much loss since forced induction compensates for much of the effects of thinner air. Forced induction loses vary depending on the car (unlike NA which is easy to calculate), so a stock turbo car a mile in elevation could lose anywhere from 1-5%.
A LS1 C5 typically traps the 1/4 mile around 108-110 mph. Trap speed change is a good measure of power change (especially in an automatic car that has less room for error compared to a stick). Given the one here only trapped 96 mph, it's pretty evident it's down on power.
Turbos wear out engines quick. Like to see how it holds up over time
VERY VALID POINT. I am not crazy about turbo gasoline engines for this reason. Diesel must be turbo on the other hand.
They've lasted fine for years in the yaris just fine. It's a toyota. They've been doing turbo engines reliably for over 40 years. It will be fine
Toyota engineers VERY well vehicles however that's a lot of boost so time will tell.
I've always preferred Chevy and the LS when it comes to domestic. When it comes to mods, durability, reliability and after market support but when it comes to sound the 5.0 always sounded way better for me and if you throw the GT350 voodoo engine in to the equation then that thing is absolute musical symphony
As a die hard camaro guy, I currently have the GT350 and you are so right!
Interesting to see a similar comparison (tyre change is ok) on a pothole track for which the toyota is designed for.
I used to consistently run low 15s in my stock base model cobalt in 2006. Driver mod needed
The little GR did pretty good for a 3 cylinder.!
Should have ran it against more comparable cars in cost . Like a 2018 10 speed mustang gt
And a 2014 or newer vette
It wouldn't be close.
Totally agree. Racing against cars from the 90s???
@@norwegianblue2017the point is the pinnacle from decades past vs a modern hot hatch. It’s a show of how far technology has come, the hottest Corolla from the c5s era wouldn’t have held a candle to it, same with the 5.0.
@@spcnearyC5Z06 would be a much better representation of pinnacle of the era
99 vette running a 15.9 1/4 mile? That elevation must really be a bigger horsepower killer than I thought!
I know what one i would have for a daily. The GR being quicker off the line and upto the "speed limit" takes it on the street. Better on fuel also. Time will tell on its reliability i guess. It will be a future classic no doubt about it. Hold onto it 15 years and it will be sort after.
I'm very impressed with Gazoo Racing. That tiny corolla did a decent job. The 4L60 in the C5 Corvette is no slouch. That transmission can shift very quick and handle the torque.
I'm surprised at how slow the Vette and the Toyota were in the 1/4 mile. I expected the Vette to be at least 1 second quicker and the Toyota to be more like 2 seconds. A lot of V6 mid size family cars have pulled mid to high 15s for over 20 years now.
They are a mile above sea level. Killer for a natural aspiration car
@@sebastienh78 thanks, I didn't realize that, I should listen more :)
Hell, my 5k lb rolling refrigerator will pull a low 14. Lots of things wrong with the testing in this video.
@@sebastienh78 Both NA cars should have been running low 14's still. Lots of examples posted online of those cars performing better than this at elevation. The Corolla should've done better too honestly.
Engine sounds test is like asking if i like bass, drums or guitar more.
These guys are full of it. I ran 13.21 with completely stock 1998 Corvette with auto trans.
How durable over time is the 3cyl turbo ?still impressive tho
it's japanese, should be fine as long as nobody messes with it which I'm sure they will, and I'm sure they will blow up
15 sec ls1 vette? Running on 7 cylinders?
That 5.0 stang kills either... even with the worst gears and tires
It's over a mile above sea level so it's being robbed of like 15 or 20% of sea level power so that's why it's slower than expected
Plus it’s the slush box transmission
4 speed auto corvettes come with ridiculously high gearing in the rear end take off is abysmal.
I think a more fair comparison should have had the Corvette and the Mustang both with manual transmissions just like the GR, the outcome would have been far different. Still, the 3 cylinder high performance GR shows just how far cars have advanced over the years. Can't wait to see the GR engine installed in the new Toyota GR86 with possibly a little more horsepower, it should be a real thrill to drive!
These cars are built completely for different purposes. Mustang is indeed for straight line drag racing but Corolla's short wheel base and suspension setup is for veering through corners.
100 mph trap should be a 13.8 second. So the elevation makes a huge difference for the NA cars. That mustang should be knocking 12s at sea level. (also tires and good gas Yada Yada I'm couch racing here) I'd like to see a last gen VA sti and evo x vs the corolla. Should be closer.
That was a lot of fun guys!
I recently beat a stock 2023 22? V8 manual mustang in my stock gr yaris, by 3 cars in 1/4mile street drag. I feel alot of driver error for the mustang I thing he just bought it. But on paper they both do 0-100kms 5.2 and 1/4mile inb12.9 seconds. I love my little yaris
Switch the drivers around and watch the 3 cylinder get gapped.
I wonder how my modified Ford Fiesta ST would do against these 2 muscle cars...my 2019 Fiesta ST has got some torque.
And their fun as hell to drive. I have a 2015 Focus ST that's a blast to drive. Too bad ford discontinued both those cars in the US.😢
The fiesta and the focus was Fords answer to the hot hatch arena but that dual clutch trans pos took both models out there were good looking cars and the st and rs versions fierce especially European models. My dad had a 2012 fiesta se auto not fast but it was fun to drive but in the end the trans went for a second time out of warranty and unfortunately just not worth it. I wondered if they were sold with a manual non st that would be a reliable set up perhaps but I think most sadly were autos and when ford stuck the 3 cy in the fiesta vs the 1.6 the party was over 🎉
@lincolnman78markv they did make a 5 speed manual option for the Fiesta and the Focus and if you get the ST or RS Focus they come with a 6 speed
@lincolnman78markv I bought my daughter a 2015 Fiesta with a 1.6 litre and it came with a 5 speed manual. She loves her Fiesta.
