- Woodturning - next in my series of box making videos. This is a twist on the spigot lid box as it has an inner lid. It's a Japanese style tea box. The inside has no finish as it's used for tea leaves, but the outside has been waxed. Made from ash. Hollowed with various tools - Les Thorne Spindle Gouge, Simon Hope 6mm Carbide Tool, Crown Revolution with scraper tip.

Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours.
All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.

Nice tea box. I like the double lid idea. I'd probably use it for M&Ms since we use tea bags. Those are yummy too.

Nice Job Stuart... I'm a little surprised you didn't use an appropriate base stain with a contrasting translucent top color and a charred piece to transition the lid and... Nice Job Stuart.
Haha....yep, this is VERY restrained for me....especially after last week's colourful effort!
Cherry wood flavored tea sounds yummy lol . I really like the idea of double lids . I'm going to make my great niece a mushroom box with a music box in the bottom of it for Christmas . But it was minus 22 degree's here today and I don't have heat in my shop so it will have to wait . Great job .

just to update ya on new sorby fingernail profiler.... i've found that by taking the cross bar out, it is more than possible to use the system to sharpen inch + chisels..... no need to upgrade to CBN and wolverine system.. saved myself an absolute fortune...lol and thanks for your help + feedback bro. R

PS I was with your cousin Pip yesterday at a Craft Market in Carmarthen, our stalls were next to each other. I have a platter I had decorated on display and Pip commented that the only other person he had seen decorate a piece was his cousin. Stewart, I was watching another japanese tea caddy making video. When the caddy was finished the grain matched up PERFECTLY with the lid - and I don't understand HOW because the lip of the main container being cut away would cause the lid to SLIDE DOWN and not match up any more.
Hi Susan - you can usually get away with a thin parting tool cut between the lid and the body and allow for the inner spigot and still get a pretty good grain match up, especially if the blank has reasonably straight grain.
@@stewartfurini Oh Thank-you - so THAT'S what it's called - the Inner Spigot. I thought you were indulging in some kind of woodturning wizardry to which I was not party! Thanks again. I was watching a Japanese tea cladding making video (Process X, I think) and man... I was just sheer bamboozled!

What finish (if any)? Perhaps a little color too, on the outside?
A restrained one from me! Outside was finished with cut 'n' polish and microrystalline wax....

What makes this a "Japanese" Tea Box? Now if it had many coats of lacquer and then been polished I might see where the name came from. No finish on the inside to protect your leaf tea, what next!

Surely those lids are toooooo tight
Hi Ron....the inner one will get remade because of the split and will be looser than it is now. I'll fettle the fit of the outer lid in a couple of weeks after the box has been indoors for a while and is acclimatised. But yes it is a tad too tight at the moment..
