I’m a turner in the western tradition, every time I see the Japanese masters turn I’m so very impressed. I hope people realize that these masters make almost all of their own tools, and have techniques that they have developed, I don’t think this kind of turning is taught in any vocational school, it’s learned at the feet of other masters.
I’ve always wondered how the Japanese turners get such thin beautiful bowls, but I see the bowl within a bowl jam chuck is the answer to that question.
    I enjoyed the video, thanks.
    Cheers from Tokyo.

Notice how much less fancy tools are used too, like 4 jaw chucks or m42 steel gouges, yet the finished pieces are so refined.

What a beautiful bowl. I would purchase bowls like that from him, given a chance. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Every time I’ve wanted to raise a tool, I’ve failed to think of lowering my floor.

This is so different to western turning. In Australia i learner "western turning". Is the lathe running on a foot pedal because it just starts to show down and i can't see it happening. It looks like some type of clutch system because i can hear the motor running in the background and depending on which pedal he steps on the workpiece is rotating counter clockwise and clockwise. The tools are also interesting the shape it takes on makes it able to achieve some angles which we'd use a combination of tools for.

They use to make beauiful chatter on the long grain. Lost art. Anybody can do end grain.
