Beautiful little box Mike. Glad to see you let the look of the wood stand on its own rather than adding embellishments. Thanks for sharing my friend. Fred
That's a stunner of a box Mike so Mu should be well pleased with it. Brendan and I are in the same wood turning club. He's great company with a healthy sense of humour. He needs one when he sees my entries to the competitions. Best wishes, Alan.
Thank you Alan, and a huge LOL, one day I really hope to meet you both in person, I have a sneaky suspicion that we will do a lot of laughing ;) Take care Mike
Thanks for the shout-out Mike. You did a great job on that because figure like that doesn't need a complicated profile on the box. There will be more Yew soon. I just need to dig it out of a shed. I nearly fell off my chair when you said "four years ago"! Best wishes, Brendan.
Mike, That was a beautiful lidded box. The design was perfect for the grain and boy what a grain. The color is awesome. Thanks for taking the time to video and share with everyone, Jim
Yew is one of my favourite woods. I remember I was once in a pub with a fellow wood lover discussing the woods we particularly like. My telling him that "I love yew" just happened to coincide with a momentary lull in the general buzz of conversation. That drew a few looks. Never finished a pint so quick in my life before!
Beautiful Mike, very elegant and simple lidded box. You always have been and continue to be a huge inspiration to me, and you're the reason why I started a youtube channel, I too am trying to give back to the youtube community as much as I continue to learn from you and other woodturners.
Thanks again Bram...she was happy with it (thank goodness). Normally she says that what I produce is not exactly what she wanted, as I do what I want normally...and she's right ;) Cheers Mike
Simple, elegant and beautiful! You've got to love Yew. It's lovely to turn and never ceases to please. Lovely job Mike, I'm sure it's going to go down very well with Mu :)
Mike - Long time woodworker, however, I've only been turning for a few months and I must say, you have been very helpful. I've learned a lot from your videos! Great work and THANK YOU from across the pond.
Hi Pillip, I hope you enjoy your new craft, and I am happy to hear that my videos have been of some use to you. Thank you for your kind words, and watching. Cheers Mike
Very Nice work Mike. That's A beautiful piece of Irish Yew... The grain pattern is very nice. Great work as always Mike and a really nice finish.. Thank you for sharing..
That Yew is beautiful! I have never turned Yew. The box is pretty too. I was suprised that you make them about the same way as I do. Glad to know that I have learned something. I am a self taught turner. Never taken a course in turning,. Just bought books. This was in the days before the internet!!! Great stuff.
Lovely piece Mike, Yew is such a rewarding material to turn. I've made several small boxes for my wife & I'm sure your good lady will love her trinket box too. Regards, Geof
Very nice Mike !! I'm getting back into making boxes (which are my favorite turning) and this was a great refresher. That yew is gorgeous. Thanks Mike :)
+Janice Kneule Hi Jan, your comment slipped through the net somehow, apologies for the extremely late reply. Thank you very much, and hope you are enjoying making your boxes again Take care Mike
Hi Mike Lovely as usual, been fortunate to get my hands on two 12''diameter branches of yew cant wait to get on lathe but going to have to wait 12 18 months ,the grain as you say is just stunning cheers Nick
A nice job on the yew box Mike. My shop is a couple months down the road yet and can't wait to get back in and turn some shavings. Stay safe and well. Thanks.
What a great video Mike! Thank you for sharing. The wood markings and grain are absolutely gorgeous great job.I wish I could make something like that but I am a rookie in the craft of woodturning.
What a gorgeous grain, I agree with some other comments, that beautiful timber does not need a fancy shape. That is just what I want to do with my piece of Yew. Thanks so much Mike.
Hi Les, sometimes the woods natural beauty is best left alone...in fact most of the time that's true, in my opinion. Thanks for watching mate. Take care Mike
Hi Mike, That's a beautiful little lidded box great colour and figure, the shape is just right, Well demonstrated and explained as always, Best wishes Harry
That is very nice Mike. It is unusual to see you making boxes and it must be a real joy to do one again. Made even more better because you are making it for a particular use, commissioned by the wife. Great work.
Thanks for your awesome videos of boxes Mike! One of your other videos were a key part in turning my girlfriends engagement ring box! Couldn't have done it without your wonderful instruction! Another great video!
Beautiful, Its so relaxing watching you make these beautiful pieces. I enjoyed turning when I was at school, maybe I can buy a used lathe and do it again at home.
Nice work, Mike. It's great when two mates can swap materials like that and then later share a story like you just did. I do miss seeing Brendan's latest escapades.
Looks great Mike. I have never had the pleasure of working with Yew. I looked into it a few years ago but the only place I could find it wanted $500 USD per board. Look forward to your next video.
Nice box Mike. For tidying up the ends on these small boxes I use a 2" Record geared chuck with pin jaws fitted. It works very well and is very reliable. I confess to being a bit of a wimp about jam chucks after the Killer Lathe kept pelting me with high speed timber! I've also been using Glenn Teagle's excellent 9mm hollower which is a cracking tool. Keep the videos coming.
Hi Graham, and thanks for the tip mate. I too have pin jaws, and use them quite a lot for doing the base clean up. But, felt for this video I'd use a jam chuck, as newer turners most probably don't have a set of pin jaws. Thanks for watching my friend. Take care Mike
Hi Lee, and thank you. I plan to do a hollow form of some sort using The Hope rig in the near future. You'll love the rig, let me know what you think. Cheers Mike
Mike, what a terrific little box, I would love to try and get some here in Aus and have a go with a similar project. You've done your usual brilliant job, you need to tell "er in doors" that she is a lucky woman. I tell mine often but I don't think she believes me, keepemcoming.
Beautiful, Mike. There are two yew species native to North America, but both are quite small and "shrubby." The English yew is occasionally used as an ornamental, but is quite uncommon. Wish it were otherwise! Your yew is really beautiful.
Very interesting Mike ! Yew is to me the by far most beautiful wood in western Europe , mine comes from Brittany and I have plenty of it , of any shape , so I like to see how other people turn it : the recesses at both ends are cylindrical and short so I feared , the wood would soon fly off but then I saw the jaws of the chuck : cylindrical and threaded , holding the wood firmly , even when you were hollowing one half with a shaping gouge , against the grain , back and forth actually ...the jaws of my chuck are just beveled and not so much to trust..that "Yorkshire grit " is a wonderful stuff , thanks for all !
With Yew, one of the slowest growing and closest grained of native trees, that piece could have 70 or 80 summers of growth preserved in its rings - a gift of a lifetime!
Wow Mike.....looks amazing. I have some yew in the garage that's drying. I was wondering what I was going to do with it. Maybe you have given me some inspiration....:-). Thanks for sharing.....cheers!
My pleasure....love your channel! Do you have any advice on how long I should let my piece of yew dry before I turn it? With boxes, can you turn it wet? Long term member said she can't wait to see what I do with it.....NO PRESSURE!!!! ;-).
Absolutely stunning! A lucky find of wood indeed and something as naturally beautiful as that needs no further embellishing. What is your brand choice or personal formula for sanding sealer? I like the finished effect it gave the piece.
Love your channel! Purchased Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen after watching your finishes. My Hampshire Grit is as hard as a rock - any suggestions? I have gone back to micro crystaline wax, any suggestions?
Hi Sandi, and thank you. May I suggest that you drop Martin Saban-Smith a line if you're in the UK, or The Walnut Log if you're in the US. Hope this helps. Cheers Mike
Thanks Mike. Loved watching this one and thanks for continuing to keep the beginner in mind. On that note, I’m not sure I understand the “jam” chuck.
