      I'm really glad to hear it Maria! I haven't done any recipe videos in a long time, so I may not have content you're interested in now. I do appreciate the sub, but I don't know if you are going to like the sewing and quilting. I had to pick one area to work on because youtube doesn't help people with variety channels and I can't do two channels because that would be over load. I do have a blog I write, and it has recipes more frequently so that might be something you would enjoy.

    That cake is soooo pretty.....that green!! When you 1st took the pans out of the oven it all looked like yummy corn bread but I'm off track. Could you use that butter flavoring for choco chip cookies, etc? Tfs, honey :D

      I can see where the baked cake color is a lot like a corn bread! ha ha!! But this definitely did not taste like a corn bread. Though, I should rustle up a good corn bread recipe to share on here! lol And yes, that butter extract works for anything. I would use it if you are not using butter in something. If you already have real butter in your cookie recipe, then I would use vanilla or a different flavoring. But if you are using oil, like in a cake mix, then the butter flavoring is amazing. Most chocolate cakes are made with oil, even from scratch, and you could add the butter flavor to the mix. I have some chocolate chip cookies coming up that I did not make with butter and I used flavoring and they are AMAZING too! Thanks as always Kathy!

      It seems fine to me. I did not add extra product to the mix, either. Just subbed the butter milk for water and used grapeseed oil. I thought it was a very good little cake. I would not win a Great British Bake Off competition, but this is a very nice little cake for a home baker to share at a party or a Sunday dinner. So I only have one 8 inch pan, therefore I can only do one layer at a time, is it okay to have some batter sitting out for a bit?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  4 года назад +11

      That's a great question, and actually, no that is not a great idea. There is a leavening agent in the dry ingredients that is activated when it's mixed with the wet ingredients. Leavening is what makes your cake rise. It's generally baking powder. So if you leave your batter sitting out for an hour or so in between baking, the second layer will not rise very well. You can do it, but it's not ideal. I would definitely get a second cake pan. If you can get the second cake pan, get one similar to what you already have. So if you have a dark metal one, get one like that. If you have a light one like mine in this video, get one like that. Different pans bake at different rates so you want them to be the same. Another option is to take the batter left after you fill your cake pan (about 2/3s of the way), and put it into cupcakes and bake a dozen or so cupcakes. Just remember that the cupcakes will bake at a faster time than the cake layer. So you might want to set two timers to get both the cupcakes and the layer cake baked properly. I hope that answers your question AND gives you some options.

      You can, but I don't know what the measurement would be. If you removed the yolk you're taking out half the egg so you would need to add more white. And you're removing fat so it would be a different consistency so I'm not sure how that would change. I would look up recipes for white cakes and that should help you.

      I live in the south so we have it in all of our grocery stores. Look for it where you live in with the refrigerated dairy milk. You can always put a teaspoon of white vinegar into one cup or 8 ounces of dairy milk to "make" buttermilk. If you get heavy butter fat cream, and whip it nearly to death it makes butter and the leftover milk in the bowl is true buttermild. I hope that helps!

    Can you do 3 layers with the same cake mix and 8 inch cake pans

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  2 года назад

      You can, but you need more cake mix. One mix makes 2 8" layers so you need to make 2 mixes. you could have either 3 layers and 12 cupcakes from two mixes OR 4 8" layers. But realize that 4 layers of 8" cakes is A LOT OF CAKE. You would probably have to double the frosting. It's a SO MUCH. It's enough cake for 50 people.

    Would this hack work for a chocolate cake?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Год назад +1

      I use Buttermilk with all my baked goods, so subbing buttermilk for any milk works. Chocolate cakes need more moisture, so you need to use oil if it calls for oil (and it usually does). I would not add extra oil and I would not sub melted butter like we see in some recipes. I use grape seed oil in baking because it won't impart any flavor to the baked good. When you prepare cake pans for chocolate cakes, use cocoa powder instead of flour so the cakes keep their color. I hope that helps!

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  3 года назад +1

      I have seen that as well! They get involved in adding a bunch of extra ingredients, and I feel like why use a cake mix if I'm adding all those extras? I may as well make the cake from scratch! The place where most people trip up when it comes to baking is getting the dry ingredients measured correctly. The cake mix removes this hurdle because it's premeasured. I recommend measuring ingredients for baking on a scale using grams for accuracy, and if I did the more involved cake mix cake, I would still weigh the flour. Maybe I'll try the recipe you mention as a review and see if it's worth the extra effort, because the one I saw used a LOT of extra ingredients. Have you tried it or just saw the recipe? I. was curious about it and now that you've mentioned it, I am really thinking about it.
