Such a no-stress method! Thank you for this. I'm making my nieces smash cake for her first birthday and it's my first time making a layer cake. Your video is much less intimidating than the professional videos I've been trying to watch. Thank you! So helpful for a casual/beginning baker. I'll be doing a practice run this week..
Oh Sarah!! I'm really happy to hear this!! I'm a home baker and not trying to do professional cakes, so that is probably why it felt less intimidating. They get easier with practice, and I think they are so fun to make. Here is the blog post that goes with the cake recipe. pattymacmakes.com/best-vanilla-cake-mix-recipe/. Frosting piped in pretty swirls with colorful sprinkles are always a winner. If that feels like too much, canned frosting has good consistency and it is easy. Especially for a smash cake, I think getting the swirls and the sprinkles are really the make thing. You can whip the canned frosting with your mixer, and it will have a beautiful texture. I do hope it works out for you.
Thank you!! It's super challenging!! I'm a home baker so showing other home bakers what they can do in their home kitchens is important to me. So much is completely over done and not practical or attainable for most of us. But that doesn't mean we can't still make something beautiful and delicious!
Hello everyone: Here is a little tip which y’all can use: DO NOT THROW AWAY THE EXTRA CAKE AND FROSTING! Here are 2 tips of what you can do instead!: 1- store the extra cake in a bag to snack on later and keep the frosting in its container to use later on for future cakes! 2- Crumble the cake into a bowl and add in the frosting and mix em all together to get cake pops, now all you have to do is just shape them and put them on a stick!
I've never made those, but what a great way to use up the scraps cut away from the top of the cakes during the leveling process!! Thanks for sharing a fun tip!
Loved your video I’m making a cake for my sons 30th and this is so helpful but I live in the tropics so I’m sure I’ll have different challenges from you with the cold weather. Thanks so much😊
Bravo, Patty for the attention you received, you home baker you. Both cakes are beautiful! Did you invite ppl in or was it just you & your Mom partaking 'cause I sure didn't get an invite! haha. I agree about things not having to be Pinterest or IG perfect....make it ones own & be proud of even imperfections. Actually nothing is perfect & who knows what others go thru to get so called perfect? We might not want to even attempt the project. Thanks much for sharing :D
Thank you Kathy! I shared it with neighbors, because it's way too much for just the two of us. It's such a cute little cake, and the mix hack I shared in the last video is so good. It's super easy and the cake is amazing. I'm just over the normalization of everything over the top. So I'm embracing normality and showing things regular people can do.
@@kathytincler2446 Thanks Kathy! I think a lot of people are ready for this kind of thing. Food blogging is going off the deep end with how fancy and upscale it's getting. I like to cook and bake, so when it's getting too much for me, I can only imagine how a person at home must feel.
Hello!! You can, but it's extremely difficult to not cut at an angle. And you must use a serrated knife, same as a bread knife to do it. There are other channels that demonstrate the process where they measure and use tooth picks to keep their level slice. I personally rather buy the tool that helps me do it perfectly every time without guessing. I bought it for $5 in the Joann cake aisle, so it's not an expensive item. I keep it stored in the original box on top of my fridge so it's there when I need it. I think you should try doing it the with the tooth pick method and see how it goes for you. But I love this little gadget, to be honest. I use it every time I make layer cakes. Thanks for your question! I hope my answer helps you.
I love the pink kitchen.. Why do you not wrap your pans cheap way wet paper towels wrapped in foil. Makes my cakes bake flat. It makes sides not get done so fast it rises. Cake still fluffy and moist. I love watching you I have learned alot. Thanks
Thank you! I don't mind trimming the top level and I don't mind the sugar crisp on my sides. I. know not everyone likes that, but it doesn't bother me. It's probably an old fashioned way of baking which I why I like it. LOL But I do know a lot of people swear by using cake straps.
I made a batch and a half, but you could do a double to have a thicker coating. It's kind of crazy how much frosting it takes to do this relatively small cake. The piped swirls take quite a bit extra, but they are so worth it. It really is pretty when it's done. I have a written recipe you can print on my website if you like. I personally like to print out my recipes and work from those. pattymacmakes.com/best-vanilla-cake-mix-recipe/ Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck. It really is a great cake.
I actually would not put frosting into the cake mix you want to bake. That would throw it off. You can certainly frost the cake with canned frosting! Lots of people do and it is a time saver, and probably less messy and expensive.
It could be a couple of things. Maybe your frosting is not quite soft enough to spread on. You can add a little more milk at the end to thin it out some. Also, working with cake layers that are cold from the fridge helps. So if you can chill your cake first and thin out the frosting a little more, I think you will have better luck. I hope it works for you. Please let me know!
I depends on how big a slice you cut. 😂Quite a few, people I would say. Like easily 8-12 for a party. I'm not a bakery so I don't have serving sizes worked out. It's the same volume of cake as a 2 layer 8" so whatever those generally feed would be similar. I'm a home baker showing how I make a few things, not a professional in any way. I hope that helps.

Is one batch of your American buttercream frosting enough for a cake this size or did you make a double batch?
