Yeah. You can see the sequence of events that went wrong from his frustration after finding the answer on google. It came from a fixation with achieving this one specific thing, lighting the fire in the artifact, and then narrowing ones focus to exploring just around that. Then getting frustrated that it's an unintuitive and hard to work out answer, when that is the point. There are more clues to find on what to do with the fires and the artifact around the game, so long as you don't drop those threads of exploration and focus solely on solving this mystery before continuing to explore. The whole point of the research chamber is to let you figure out the fires if you haven't already done that when you get there. It boils down to a problem of not allowing oneself to consider "I don't have enough information to solve this now. Maybe I can come back later and solve it after having learned more."
To be fair to him, it's not all a player issue. You could say the non-linearity of the game, while a great strength, doesn't always convey itself as well as it could to the player. Doesn't give enough indication that there are more directions to go explore in, and that you don't need to solve this lantern conundrum immediately. But I don't want to blame the game too much for that, personally I think it conveys the clues very well. Probably being in his first playthrough after so many hours had lessened his patience somewhat. A little different to when you go in after having taken a break between finishing the game and then coming back to play the dlc.

I feel like Outer Wilds is mostly obvious about everything.. info repeated everywhere, limited game mechanics and interaction potential, but still multiple ways to solve if you're clever.. like, giants deep core.. people get stuck there, watching the jellyfish go in and out, literally the only option, and people still won't think it's the jellyfish how they get in, bumping it with their ship once, shorting out, then giving up.. the game gave him the info, he couldn't put it together, it's not like, escape from tarkov, where if you're not using a wiki and community made maps, you're doomed..

@@StayFractalesque I completely agree with you on everything except maybe the jellyfish. I understand that they essentially guard very important information, so it’s not meant to be easy. But you practically tell players that the standing game mechanic for them is that their tentacles spell the end.

Tbf I think the DLC has a huge problem with that.
In the base game, I had to look up hints a few times. Mainly a full explanation on how the anglerfish aggro worked because "dont be noisy" isn't a great explanation, tbh and a hint on how to get to the ATP because for the life of me I could not find out. But that was a vague hint from a reddit post.
For the DLC, i had to explicitly look up guides on how to go through the dark areas without getting caught and ended up cheesing the hidden gourge dream area. As much as I love the game, the dlc struggles in the area of natural game progression. Especially since my only method of entering the hiden gorge was via climbing a tree near the dam because I didn't realize you could enter it via the laboratory or the river.

    • @jomacdo9415

@@evilness3404 Nah, Base game and DLC are both fine if you remain humble, assuming it's the games fault you can't figure something out instead of yours is where people trip up. They straight tell you the angler fish are blind, and you kind of have infinite lives, it took me couple minutes to dial in that the angler fish can't hear the ship thrust when the first speed dial isn't lit. You can see the hidden gorge and how to get there by just looking up at it. The stealth sections are just that, stealth sections. If you don't like them you can use the tricks from the first area on the next two. You have a couple minutes to run down to the second archive after the tower gets dunked. You can set up the river raft in the 3rd area and raft over once you've put the lights out, you only need to run past the last guy then. And and if you beat or skip the 3rd area's stealth the glitch you learn there makes stealthing the 2nd trivial.
Outer Wilds only gets rough when you stop giving the game the benefit of the doubt. If you can't figure it out, the game's not bad, you just missed a hint. Like say, a slide that shows the owls going to sleep with the artifact

For anyone who reads the comments after he ended up looking up how to get into the dream world and complaining about the solution, in the next episode of the series, after reading comments about it, he realised that he had missed the hidden gorge entirely, found the intended clues, retracted his complaints, and apologised.
Along with this, he explained that the reason he did so was that he had spent several hours of unused footage searching what he thought was the entirety of the stranger, somehow missing the hidden gorge. Along with this, this was at the very beginning of his episode for that week, so he had basically no usable footage. Assuming that it was just an incredibly obtuse puzzle as he had spent so long searching to no avail with no further clues he could find without the hidden gorge, and desperate to make sure the video wouldn't just be 40 minutes or so of nothing, that's why he looked it up
It's unfortunate, and still wasn't good, but I think the reasoning was justifiable in the context, and he apologised for his complaining, so this youtuber is cool. Just wanted to inform people in case they immediately assumed the worst of him after seeing the googling moment.

Kinda just gonna stop the video where he's angry he had to google something. Really bothers me that he's blaming the game when it's clear he hasn't explored everything outside the dream world. Very frustrating.

It did suck but according to him, out of camera he had spent several hours straight trying to find the solution to no avail, and once he realised how he was supposed to find it, he was like "yeah that was my fault, not the game's."

Damn that sucks. It was a huge spoiler too, like arguably the most important and impactful spoiler. Even more disappointing is the mentality afterwards. Like, all he had to do is admit he was wrong. It's fine, we all get impatient sometimes, but it's like he was finding reasons why he didn't make a mistake. "It would have taken me hours to find it"? You just spent hours reading journals! You have the time! (Edit: So he does regret it, and would rather do things other ways. Still, my point stands)(Edit 2: Hiccup aside, this was a great playthrough.)

It's sad that he had to Google dozing off. There is another big clue un the lab but he hadn't been there yet. I explored the stranger for a while before figuring it out.. just by thinking of what was missing I looked for the canyon. Sometimes it's better too have the chat backseating than going for solutions because it's pretty sure solutions will give a shortcut or spoil.
54:40 exactly that's waow a chat or a Discord is more helpful than google. only other players will know how to guide the player without spoiling.

Googles about falling asleep after talking about the game trusting you not to go looking for spoilers, complains its unintuitive because "you'd have tp know that to even guess it"....well maybe theres somewhere that tells you that, ya know, if you looked around a bit?
Genuinely enjoyed the supercut of his play through of the base game, but just every time he gets annoyed that he googled it to get an out of context bit of info, and is annoyed it doesnt seem to have context, it just irritates the hell out of me and i hope they stop bringing it up and eventually figure out how they learn about it or finish they game without complaining more about their own googling.

Im gonna say, the comment section is way too hard on this guy (in my opinion). Yes solution exists, but an inate downside of a game that doesnt hold your hand is that sometimes there is a risk of getting lost or missing something crucial, this is an innate risk of a game that lacks in direct tutorialisation. And we all only have finite hours on this planet. After a certain point saying "this is not worth another 5 hours of banging my head against this particular wall until i give myself an aneurism for nothing" is perfectly acceptable.
Y'all purist aint got no right telling other people how to play the games they spent money on.

I relate to this guy looking up the answer, when I was playing I spent like solid 3 hours just looking around (even after exploring the lab with 3 chambers) and still didn't get how to do that. I also had to google it and I turned out I've missed just one single slide reel. This guy's frustration is understandable because he didn't even know about the third owlk settlement location

20:30 "That's not what I wanted to wake up to!" Boy is he in for a rude surprise later in the DLC. It's tragic that he spoiled his own surprise by ranting about "bad game design" when the game clearly spells out what you need to do, and drops multiple increasingly obvious hints along the way.

  • @AFistfulOf4K
    @AFistfulOf4K 4 месяца назад +1

Hate it when people say adventure/puzzle games have impossible puzzles because they were too lazy/impatient to find the hints... and in Outer Wilds of all things, a game with a built-in hint system. It's been this way since DOS days. I can't count the number of times I've heard people (especially game journos) shit on classic games for having "impossible" puzzles, when I know damn well those puzzles were solvable on account of having finished them myself before the internet existed to cheat with. Say you got stuck, admit you cheated, but don't then say the game is at fault because you CBA to actually play it.

Really not sure what I could possibly be exaggerating, it's a rather straightforward description of what happened 🤔

Bruh, thumbs down for looking it up and labeling it "counter-intuitive" and how it "pisses you off". The game makes things like this ambiguous so the odds of you stumbling upon it aren't as likely. Like everyone is saying in the RUclips comments, the more you explore the surface you'll eventually come across a recording explaining this exact mechanic. You robbed yourself of a "holy shit" moment all because you're too impatient to try and understand something: literally the core mechanical idea of Outerwilds.
Even comments like "If we die the tower collapses", like that doesn't make any sense and just makes me think you're the type of player to assume the first thought you get is the right one. I hope this game taught you to slow down a bit and question things because in my experience that's what Outerwilds did to create magic: Take your time and observe and test your theories; literally the scientific method. Appreciate all the careful and intentional design choices the developers at Mobius are showing you.

I just want to say a couple of things.
Eelis is not the person playing.
The Librarian was pressed for time to make an episode and wanted it to not be boring.
He apologized later for searching for the solution instead of how to find the solution.
