    Another big shout out to Ashley for the loan of this one. I think he'll like it a lot, the colours are fantastic and it is on a decent strap too. San Martin make better watches for the same money, of that there is no doubt, but the Orient Kamasu is still the #1 at $200 in 2022. Cheers, Jody

    On the Orient Kamasu V2, it is impressive what they have done with the dial, certainly an upgrade, but swapping the rectangular indices with circular ones made it look more like a Ray 2. Doing that I feel it little to justify the price increase.

    The Kamasu is one of those items that are greater than the sum of its parts. And the parts are pretty good to start with. I almost bought this watch from Marc, but it would've been a luxury purchase that I shouldn't be dawdling in right now. I love this colorway. And the strap looks great and also jettisons the one real weak point, the stock bracelet. When you factor in a strapcode replacement, the cost is about the same, as it was for my black Kamasu. My hollow endlink bracelet started to bend away from the case after only a few months. But I love my Kamasu and I love it best in black. It can just do everything.

    I am SO glad Jodi bought up San Martin when he talked about the Kamasu. I bought the blue Kamasu because I heard it was the best inexpensive diver. However, the San Martin sn017 blows it out of the water in every way. It is really making me think twice about how much I care about brand or originality. If you live in the UK it seems impossible to get the parts. Contacted Orient Japan - no reply. Contacted various other affiliates and eventually had good response from the US. After being impressed by several very favourable reviews I bought a second hand Kamasu with missing crown, it took months to track down third party bits. Now it's working, the movement is undoubtedly better than the Seiko equivalent, much more consistent time keeping. My review, the watch is ok.

  • @rangersmith4652
    @rangersmith4652 2 года назад +7

    Thanks for this review. This updated version is not better than the original Kamasu, but it is different enough to warrant owning both, especially if you each in a different color. People do grouse about the crown size, and I would have liked to see it grow a bit on V2, but that would have required retooling the crown guards. Honestly, it's not the drawback, for me anyway, that some people claim. For a person with limited dexterity or really large fingers, I can see how it would be problematic. There is always the ACOK (Baby Triton?) series, a tad bigger, with the date at 4, no day, and a more typically-sized crown, for about 10-15% more cash. I'd argue that one is marginally superior to the Kamasus.

Also, they all speed up approximately 10 ~15 seconds after walking for 3 ~ 5km or exercise in gym)

    The Kamasu is the ideal mechanical sports watch (on a bracelet) for people that actually do sporty things that can seriously damage a watch if they go wrong. I know there'll be some that contradict me but not many people are prepared to wear their luxury watch for stuff like climbing with sharp rocks everywhere. And from personal experience, having hollow end links on a watch is an advantage when your bracelet catches something when you are descending at speed. It really prevents the watchstrap becoming embedded in your arm.
    I have a Ray 2 and a Kamasu and they are also surprisingly consistent performers and show less isochronism and a far more consistent than my numerous 6R15 Seiko movements.

      Totally agree, ive taken my green Kamasu on several adventures and work assignments, it is so perfect as a tool watch. Ive measured emergency response times, the day/date is so useful, and the lume helps so much.

    F6922 is simple a slightly upgraded old Suwa Seikosha 6000 series movement. It dates back to the 60's. Variants were used in hi-beat form in the old Grand Seikos, and also used in the 6105.

      Every mechanical movement is a variation of engineering that's many decades old. They have different levels of so-called "refinement" and "decoration," but they all work the same way.

    I wouldn't say nay to an aluminum bezel per se, but ceramic would always be my preference. Except here! That 15-minute section in rosy pink - in a kid's water-colour tray it's 'rose madder' - looks right luminous in your wrist shot and it must be due to the bezel being aluminum. Beautiful watch all over, with the buckle shooting the gold under-tones that should show up on the case in other light conditions than your day in Sydney (I see the Brisbane River has gone OTT). I like the indents in the edge of the bezel at 10-minute intervals - an original touch.

    One other thing the San Martin's lack is reliable warrenty service. Although "pleasant" and quick to reply, ultimately in my case, in affective at resolving issues. If it comes to a judgement call, they will not support the customer. Orient however, answered the phone when I called, and serviced my Ray II during a pandemic. They have a service center in SoCA. I spent about $40 when I sent my watch to no avail, to SM.

    I've had my gorgeous red-dial Kamasu for a year now, and it's still running around +2 seconds per day, fully wound and on the wrist. The F6922 is on par with the NH35, period. And, its automatic winding action is simply better. It's a great caliber, and offers great variety for all of the NH35-heavy collections out there.

      Hey, will it fit on a 6.2-6.5 inch wrist? Does it fit you good? If you’re comfortable please share your wrist size as well.
      Thank you

    It's a great watch Jody. Love to see the sapphire crystal. My only Orient diver is an orange bezel Mako XL, which is great. No hacking/handwinding but very accurate so I don't care. Mineral crystal but I got a tiny scratch on it, found a great watchmaker in Istanbul who replaced it with a sapphire crystal with ar coating underneath!

    Orient went a little crazy with the fauxtina in this line (esp. the Pepsi variant), but it just works for the limited edition 👌

    I saw Marcs review of this one. I love the colors. Shame it's an LE. I still have my Neptune I purchased from Long Island Watch, which Orient have since discontinued. Another fantastic watch for the price with a sapphire crystal and the 40N5A movement.

    Like you, Jody, the notches in the bezel put me off for long time. This LE colorway somehow lets me forgive that oddity. I think the IP coating probably looks even more interesting IRL. But in the end, for the money, the orange textured dial San Martin is more appealing to me. Great review, as always.

    Got the grey dialled one, i mostly like orient, i have about 4 of them, sometimes i feel a bit more like i prefer the idea rather than the reality..... i also wish the lugs were 20mm. 22mm lugs watches get the least wrist time from me abd i feel thats the reason why. Id love my new kamasu on a 20mm nicely tapering bracelet.

    • @nickharvie2252
      @nickharvie2252 2 года назад +1

      Agree. I found the bracelet to be too wide for the watch head. 20mm would suit it much more and with a bit more taper.

    I was really keen to get this limited edition Kamasu. I had an original Blue Kamasu, which I bought whilst waiting to pick up the burgundy dial one. I've since got the burgundy dial, and sold the blue to fund it. There's a part of me that regrets selling the blue, and there's probably gonna be a part of me that might regret not buying this new version. That said, I took the plunge buying a Strapcode Jubilee for my Kamasu. That extra cost was 100% worth it. I think I'm more than happy with my current set up, which is around the same price all up as this new limited edition.
