CVT fluid drain and fill on a Nissan Altima, Rogue (2013,2014,2015,2016,2017,2018) with NS3 CVT fluid.
Fluid change done at 65k miles, currently at 85k miles with no problems. Great car, good transmission if you don't abuse it. Enjoy the video. Авто/Мото
I have a 2013.....I would pull the pan, clean it and the metal shavings off the magnets, I'd also change the paper cartridge filter right behind the cooler. Thanks for showing how to get that dummy dipstick cap off.
Thanks you saved me $100 bucks. No need to go to the dealer now.
I've been trying to find a detailed description of how to get the fill tube cap off Nissans without a dipstick, this is first good one I've found. Very clear picture and description. Have a 17 Rogue and now I'll know how to do it correctly. I'm almost sure I would have broken it otherwise. Thank you sir. Just lucky I happened onto this yt.
Been trying to find the same. 2016 Nissan rogue.
I beat a small piece of coat hanger flat on one end and bent it a little and approved FROM UNDERNEATH and worked inside tab out of the way.
For Altima, do all you can to limit/ lower heat, includes minimum coolant-water ratio, 30k change both filters, best cvt fluid, seal the too-leaky cooling plenum, keep radiators clean...I found this to be enough for Mojave hard and hot conditions now 209k.
What a lifesaver! I accidentally pulled the wrong plug when changing oil, and drained my CVT fluid instead. Worse, I had the car rented out on Turo, with the client's trip starting in a couple of hours. Luckily I had drained the catch-pan, and was able to precisely measure how much I had taken out, ride over to Nissan and buy a quart, and replace the 500ml that I removed. I had hell getting the plug out without breaking it, but persisted. Without this video I would have never thought that was a fill plug. Thank you thank you thank you.
Glad it worked out.
Km? Up
🤣😂🤣 I'm glad I'm not the only one who did this.
@@JJCentral-DIYWhat is the CVT oil change interval of altima
@@tony-ex4tw it's 60k for normal use but the dealer will try to convince every 50 or so
U don’t have to measure how much fluid came out of cvt after you drained it .when filling cvt after draining ,add 5 quarts ,then crank up the car let it run ,and let motor and transmission get hot ,then go through al the gears three times counting to 10 when in each gear .after that with car on level ground and running look up on side on transmission you’ll see overflow plug (14mm socket .) remove that plug let fluid drain till it starts to drip then put plug back in and tighten. Now you have right amount of fluid
If it’s leaking then you are correct but if no leaks I see no problem with the first method
@@jasonvergara7705 reason for 2nd method method is ,to make sure you got the right amount of transmission fluid and plus it helps flush it out .Changing my own transmission fluid cost me 30 bucks and it only takes me 45 mins .also I know it’s done right and saves me a lot of time

thank you this works everytime, just requires the car to be on a lift or higher on stands.
Thanks for making this! My 2015 Altima just hit 55,000 miles and I plan to make this CVT fluid change myself soon. Thanks.
Nice, FYI there is a plug next to the drain plug that will automatically drain any excess oil IF the car is level. check out where it is here ruclips.net/video/rbqLVEDDlFo/видео.html ALSO the car should be idling, DONT hit the gas pedal even in park, until your oil level is correct!
Just idle your sweet ass Nissan while the overflow does its thing, and again, cars gotta be level or close to it.. ... ..
Thank you so much I have a Nissan Altima myself and I was wanting to find a video just like this one thank you .
Drain transmission fluid, then add the 3.5 ns3 warm up the car and let trans oil reach 90 to 115 and remove the fill plug and you have to see a little string of atf.
What is the exact ammount needed for fluid? And is there no filter inside the oil pan? Thank you.
I would not do a "pan service" like this without replacing the filter too ( as other comments have said). I'm sure Nissan recommends a filter change with every fluid change also. Nice video.
@@thecurechivasi change my nissan altima 2015 transmission filters and I think changing the filters is necessary when changing the transmission oil. The transmission cartridge filter is complete black after 100k miles
nissan does not recommend filter change. i asked the dealership.
My filters always look clean and no metal sheds. Is still necessary?
Preach thinking same thing
I was told by Nissan the filter never needs to be changed, I think it is to keep them in business 😐
I have a 2013 jx35 I need to knw what types of fluids for my transmission is it Castrol cvt or the ns3 cvt any difference?
What website did you purchase the fluid from?
Good vid man.
There is a stand pipe to set the fluid level. Its a 14mm bolt on the bottom side of bell housing.
Yup
and the filter?
Thank you for that that was pretty helpful going to change the oil in my car help me a lot
Should I also replace the washer / gasket on the drain plug? Anyone know the torque spec on the drain plug? Is there a filter you are supposed to change under the pan? What year and engine is that?
Torque for transmission plug is 25 foot pound and replace the copper ring on the plug for a new one .
Bought Nissan dipstick. 21 13/16 inches of metal from inside edge of cap . "Gauge-Assy oil 31086-JA00A" is on package label
Thanks for the info. Will buy and see how off Iam in fluid level comparison.
Is it suitable for 2017 Altima
The auto parts store gave me ns2 if this fine?
How many miles require to change c v t fluid. Thanks
Nissan says 60k, dealers will say what ever.
After my husband and Father in-law spent hours trying to get it open, they cut it off to find no stick. We ordered one from Amazon.
They shouldn't be working on cars if it took both of them hours.. it's plastic
Thank You For The Video !!
When doing a drain and fill only does the fluid have to be operating temp and when doing the drain? I have heard both. Fluid needs to be cold cause it expands not hot when doing a drain????
I am no expert in this, but from experience the colder the engine, the more fluid came out. When the engine/tranny was hot the oil was adhering to all the internal parts and less fluid was draining.
do you have any issues with the transmission now? i know there is a recall on the cvt they put. do you actually think that will help the transmission last longer or is bs?
Nissan CVTs are always a hit and a miss. They get a bad batch pretty frequently and the rest will be perfectly fine. I am thankful to have a good one and I flush every 50k miles to make sure it runs smooth.
Still helpful thanks
Is 5 quarts for a 2015 Nissan Altima S 4 cylinder ok?
Yes
can you get under the car without any ramps to do this cvt oil change? or do you need ramps to lift car up?
you either need ramps or jack stands to safely do this.
Did your CVT "whine" before changing the fluid? I have about 65k miles on my 2015 Altima, and I notice that it's beginning to whine.
The whine is mostly from the electric power steering and not the CVT. Check the fluid level on the power steering, there is nothing much you can do other than asking the dealer to change the steering pump/motor. The newer model seems quieter.
I thought you had to fill the transmission from the bottom with a fill plug ??
That’s because you do. There’s a plug on the side to allow excess to drip out and then your oil level is PERFECT.
Pouring in what came out only assumes that the trans was filled correctly to begin with. It’s not wise to assume that, even from a factory car. You just never know. Why risk it when there’s a proper way to do this oil change.
NS300P & CV0NS3 What are the differences between the two CVT FLUIDs?
They are same. CV0NS3 replaced NS300P. Either one will work.
Always put .5 quarts extra than what comes out. Usually 4.5 quarts come out so I go for 5. Reason being, CVT fluid shouod ne changed every 30k/3 years and every 60k/6 years with new tranmission pan gasket, strainer (with new o ring) and oil cooler filter (with new gasket) alojg with new crush washer. Gives you the opportunity to clean off the bottom of the pan and clean any film off the magnets. Cvt fluid runs hotter than ATF and Manual Gear oil transmission fluids (breaks down quicker so the typical transmission service every 60k gets cut in half, due to CVT fluid burning a bit of its proper level down which is why you put .5 qts extra. I was a main line technician at Nissan for a bit, now I do heavy line at Hyundai and their ICVTs and CVTs still burn transmission oil overtime.
Thank you so much for the information. This is very helpful to hear from an authoritative source.
@JJCentral-DIY my pleasure. Check the 14mm overflow plug after optimal temp is reached and each gear is shifted for 2 seconds each repeat 3 times! 😀

You can buy a dip stick at Nissan to replace the cap.
2015 Versa note has no drain plug. So I guess remove the pan? Change gasket and replace filter.?
the 2008 Versa has a drain plug so I would be very surprised if the 2015 didn't
they do lol fucking morons
But.. How do you know the initial reading is correct..?
I see many ppl are looking for info on the "proper level" on CVT trans fluid.. since Nissan has removed the dipstick in 2013 or newer models. Here is how it is done!
On all Nissan model years "prior to" 2013 using NS-2: Fluid level should be checked with the fluid warmed up to 122°F to 176°F at the dipstick.. When checking a 2013 or newer model Nissan CVT, the NS-3 CVT trans fluid, the fluid level must be checked at the fluid level check bolt on the transmission, "and the car must be level".. You need an OBD tool that can read the transmission fluid temp! The level of the trans fluid should be checked at 98-113°F. If you allow the transmission fluid to heat-up to normal operating temp 122°F to 176°F, the fluid will expand too much, and will give the false impression that you have overfilled. Again, the trans fluid level must be checked at 98-113°F.. and at that temperature, the fluid should be a fast drip or very fine stream overflowing from the fluid level check bolt hole on the transmission.
I got my 2015 Nissan Altima at 37,000 miles. Then I changed the transmission fluid (drain and fill) at 76,000 miles but I didn’t change the filter. Now it’s 104,000 miles and I haven’t changed the filter or oil. For oil it’s been 28,000 miles. And filter it’s been 67,000 miles. Is that bad?
That was a nightmare. You generally have to change your oil about every 7-10 thousand miles but, all of this depends on what oil you have. If you have what is known as “Advanced Full Synthetic” oil- you can drive on that safely for probably 15 thousand miles before an oil change. Some “Advanced Full Synthetics” can last 20,000 miles before an oil change. I use Mobil 1 and Royal Purple oil, so I go months and thousands of miles before I change. You always change the oil filter with an oil change as well.
He is talking about transmission oil
And the filter?
What's the difference between ns3 and Castrol cvt?
The only way to answer that is to have them both analyzed and compare the results.
NS3 dony have a dipstick because you dont need one. There is 2 drain plug. The big one is for draining the fluid. The other one is to measure the top level.
Are they close together?
@@arbysizdabest622 they are in vertical and horizontal drain position.

I have been told to leave transmissions alone if it’s shifting fine but with CVTs it’s like a ticking time bomb nissan specifically
Is this something I can do in my driveway?
Yes, check out my cvt video for Nissan rogue. It is more clear
How many bottles of oil ns3 do you place? My car is a v6 3.5 2016
Wondering the same on the v6
The v6 doesn't have a CVT transmission. You dont use CVT fluid.
My wife has a 2011 Rogue. Guess it needs NS-2 CVT fluid. She should have had the CVT serviced a long time ago. She has 125, 000 miles and it seems to have a slip or hesitation every now and then that's not engine related. Guess I'll try to check the level. I think it has the actual dipstick in the tube.
Is it's slipping you're too late
Mind slipping, too. When it was real hot out yesterday? My transmission got overheated. I had to pull over and let it cool down
@michaelgarland579 it's been 4 years and she's put 50,000 more miles on it and it's still doing that slipping every now and then, but it hasn't went out.
I recently had to replace the clock spring mechanism, and I thought it needed an oxygen sensor but I believe it's the catalytic converter that needs replaced now.
do you have to change the cvt filter??
Not often if you want to be cautious do it every 100,000 miles, but you can do it at 150,000 if you want. There are two filters for the CVT, so if you're going to do it. You might as well do both.

Man Great info! , I had a hard time trying to remove the stupid Transmission oil plug.!
Shouldn't the car be level when draining?
If you are simply replacing the same amount you drain out with new fluid of the same temperature then it shouldn't matter.
I am now rebuilding my transmission on my nissan teana cefrio my best best best advice to ALL car owners new and old ... stay within the family of transmission fluid .. if you have a nissan buy Nissan fluid .. if you have Toyota buy toyota fluid .. simple simon .. excellent viedo too
Or at least don't buy a multi-vehicle fluid. It's impossible to meet the different specs of a dozen different fluids in one formula.
Isn`t it easier to suck out the fluid with a oilpump ?
If you have access to it, yes
Quick question. I changed cvt fluid around 90,000k miles. I’m at 225k now & haven’t changed it since then. Should i still do a change the fluid or filter or will it mess up my transmission since im at a high mileage since the last change?
@@juiceman4206 If you feel transmission slips, then don't change, drive it till it dies. If you feel like the CVT is smooth, then you can change it.
@@JJCentral-DIY so after i start it & go to take off it takes a quick second for shift into gear, does that then car rides smooth as butter no slipping. & it’s throwing p2675 code for the check engine light. Replaced all sensors & checked wiring.. all good so trans fluid being low seems to be next issue. Still think i should just ride it out ? Or that adding some fluid could help ?
Been researching all over trying to find best way to go. changing the fluid seems to be safest route to keep car running longer but just don’t wanna mess up the trans bc it’s been so long
@@juiceman4206 you can do partial change. Drain and fill only drains 3 qt and leaves another 3 quarts in the tranny. That does not affect as much as full flush. First bring the fluid to correct recommended level by topping it off.

Zach W I’ve heard not to flush. RUclips Scotty Kilmer made a good case against flushing.
@@gator7303 That depends on how many miles you've drove the car before flushing it... If you follow the maintenance schedule (60k miles for a 2014 nissan altima) you should flush the transmission. Otherwise, check the deterioration count and visually inspect fluid condition (for metal debris, varnished or cloudy appearance) every 15k miles, and replace if necessary. CVT fluid is pretty advanced, long-lasting stuff.
That said, I have heard of issues with overheating on some transmission models in hot climates, so of course YMMV. :)
One source said every 10,000 to 12,000 miles IF you are doing serious off-roading with the vehicle. In other words, "if you are abusing it".
Can you just use your engine oil dipstick??? Of course clean it off real good before using and replacing.
Really appreciate this video 👍🏻
Someone here who has a brain! Lol
They say it's to short I dont know
Thats not a 2013
Why do they not have a dipstick on these? V bizarre
So they can make the fluid change look harder and charge 300 plus for it.
@@JJCentral-DIY thanks. That's just awful
Most folks don't know how to read a dipstick and if they do, most don't realize the importance of using the correct fluid. They don't even realize the difference between ATF and CVT fluid. The auto manufacturers aren't much help. The fluid for most ATs including CVTs is suppose to be checked with the vehicle on level ground and running and in park and with the transmission at normal operating temperature. (Correct me if I'm wrong) The temperature gauge is for engine coolant and not for transmission fluid. If the automobile manufacturers really wanted to help then they would at least put a transmission temperature gauge on the dash.
Just so you all know, this is not the correct way to do a fluid change on these CVTs. You're supposed to fill it through the overflow plug on the CVT using an adapter. Part number is KV311039S0... these RUclips DIYers are ignorant. You can look up the proper way to do this job on Google per Nissan pretty easily now. There's many steps to do this job properly. Don't listen to these youtubers.
Perfect, thanks!
Use the engine Oil dipstick instead to measure. It is 26". Thanks for the video
I feel stupid for not trying that first. Good suggestion. Usually the engine oil dip sticks are shorter so I didn't even bother checking. Thanks for pointing that out.
Honestly go to junkyard 3$ for an older year dipstick don’t risk contaminating the cvt fluid
Dude was breathing hard AF 😂😂😂
17 is not the same bro. Check you video
You've just changed 1/3 of the whole fluid.
That is why you need to change it about every 20k miles
Never flush your transmission fluid. Listen to Scotty
@@brucelee5465
Scotty says that about automatic transmission fluid and then only if you have like150,000 miles on the vehicle and it's acting up. I'm not sure that applies to a CVT.
It takes more than 3.5 quarts Boe..
Careful who you order from I was scammed I paid $44 for 5q of Nissan brand never received it.
