  • In this video I will demonstrate how to drain and refill the fluid in your cvt transmission, also how to check the level properly.
    1) drive vehicle for approximately 10 minutes to warm transmission.
    2) Pull drain plug and drain pan of contents.
    3) replace drain plug and refill with 4 courts of CVT fluid
    4) idle engine until oil reaches approximately 113° F (DO NOT DRIVE OR ATTEMPT TO SHIFT THROUGH GEARS DURING THIS PROCESS.)
    5) Pull check bolt, wait till it trickles, then replace check bolt.

I have to chime in here about several things in the video and the comments. I"m a retired auto tech and have over 50 years in the trade, including automatic trans overhaul work. First off, Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid is a fine product and has certain specifications. Valvoline and other brands of CVT fluids that MEET those Nissan specifications can be used as a substitute. I've been though this years ago with Mercedes (no dipstick, and claimed lifetime fluid)
Sorry but no hydraulic fluid of oil is "lifetime" in my opinion. They break down over time and dirt and particles are suspending in the fluid or oil. That is why fluids should be periodically changed. Now onto the brand of fluid. Just as Mercedes, BMW or NIssan has bottles of fluid with their company name on them does not mean they actually made the fluid (or oil) but rather have contracted with a chemical company to make the fluids (or oils) according to their specifications. Mercedes and Nissan charge upwards of $20 per qt for ATF or CVT fluids with their brand name. Valvoline as well as other companies makes equivalent fluids (or oils) that meet or exceed the manufacturers specifications, thus they are approved fluids (or oils) and can be safely used. Please do your own research, look at material data safety sheets and specifications and compare what I'm writing here. The myth that one has to use "Nissan fluid" or "Mercedes fluid" or your transmission will fail is simply a myth. Using the wrong fluid ie: ATF in a CVT will not work out very well and can guarantee failure. Please refer to the Magnuson-Moss Act: apb-law.com/understanding-magnuson-moss-act-relates-aftermarket-car-parts/ which explains that a car maker cannot void your warranty because you didn't use their parts. As I've written, if the product meets or exceeds manufactures specs and is the proper fluid (in this case) for the vehicle, the dealer cannot deny warranty coverage. So therefore, there are substitute CVT fluids, just as there are substitute ATF, Power Steering fluid and Engine oils.
There are purists who insist on using the automakers products and are willing to pay the prices. I've been involved in many discussions on the Mercedes forum with regard to ATF brands, where some people insist using aftermarket ATF will ruin the transmission etc etc. Personally, I've been using Vallvoline ATF that meets Mercedes specifications for years with absolutely no failures or problems. Again, I suggest you all do your own research and not rely on here say of what the dealer told you or your friend. BTW, I was also a GM tech and service manager as well as a shop owner in my career, so I'm confident about what I'm sharing here. You can pay $20 or $25 for a quart of "Nissan fluid" if you want to, or you can spend wisely and buy another product that meets specs and saves you money.
As for the method shown in the video for drain and refill, I like to keep it simple. Warm up the vehicle and check level while running with a dipstick or dipstick tool. Shut off engine and drains transmission pan into a clean container. MEASURE what came out! Replace the fluid with the exact same amount that you drained out. Drive the vehicle and recheck level with your dipstick or dipstick tool. Simple: 3 1/2 qts out-----3 1/2 qts in. No rocket science needed. Hope this helps.

I have a 2013 Nissan Rogue SV all-wheel-drive with a L4 engine and I drained out 7 quarts of CVT fluid because I have a transfer case in the back so I have more fluid in my transmission because it's all wheel drive vehicle. I looked at the dealer I looked on Amazon eBay went to AutoZone winter advanced Auto and purchase the Carquest brand ns2 CVT full synthetic transmission fluid. I went ahead measured like I said Seven Courts out Seven Courts in replace what I took out drove around for a day came back home measured the level and I have a dipstick in mine and it was perfectly fine. I am driven about 300 miles since that and everything's great! Thanks for the response.

On all Nissan model years "prior to" 2013 using NS-2: Fluid level should be checked with the fluid warmed up to 122°F to 176°F at the dipstick.. When checking a 2013 or newer model Nissan CVT, the NS-3 CVT trans fluid will need to be checked at the fluid level check bolt on the transmission housing.. You need an OBD tool that can read the transmission fluid temp! The level of the trans fluid should be checked at 98-113 degrees F. If you allow the transmission fluid to heat-up to normal operating temp 122°F to 176°F, the fluid will expand too much, and will give the false impression that you have overfilled. Again, the trans fluid level must be checked at 98-113 degrees F.. and at that temperature, the fluid should be a fast drip or very fine stream overflowing from the fluid level check bolt hole.

65K miles on our 2014 Altima. Nissan dealer wanted $253 for this "oil change". What a ripoff. I paid $74 shipped for the gallon and it's was easier than an oil change. First thing I did was warm up the car. Just out of curiosity, I removed the overfill plug first. Got 3 quarts out. Then removed drain plug and more came out. I prob could have got another 2 qts or more but put the plug back in at 4 qts since that's all I had of the new AMSOIL. It's never been serviced to my knowledge, so I'm not sure why 3 qts came out of the "overflow". Anyway, should be fine, 4 qts out, 4 qts in.

I don't see how it would be an issue changing it at 81k. If you've been rough with it or had hard acceleration through its life then I would probably just leave it. The reason I say this is becausein the case of its life being hard as in it's had hard acceleration through its life. There is likely lots of meniscopical fragments of metal in the oil that is keeping your transmission from slipping. At this point it doesn't make sense to change the oil. However if you've had the car formost of its life and have not been rough with it, then I would suggest changing the oil.

My dealer wants $615 CDN to do a trans flush on my 17 Max , i asked about a simple drain and refill , they said we don’t do that. I am new to these CVT’s and want to keep this trans operating for years to come. My thoughts are that if I keep the fluid changes regular I shouldn’t need to get the trans flushed, I’m at 50,000 km now.

    • @pete89spotsin

I would drain and refill every 15k for the first 3 drains, then up the interval after the third time, to 30k every interval. This will make the new oil introduction process happen slowly and carefully.
This was my plan with my car and I've suck by it.

It was a bit of a worry But I since watch a lot of RUclips videos on the CTV transmission. That were Mostly saying The CTV transmission have not got a transmission problem. There got a CTV oil problem. They say it best to change the CTV oil ever 40,000.00. And to not get it pumped pump out. but just get it drained out. So I thought I can change the CTV transmission oil. They just put the car on a set of ramps Then undone the drain plug and drain the old oil out. leave it for a while and then replace the plug . and then put the new Nissan CTV oil in I thought I could do this my self. I notice that on line that 4 quarts of Nissan CTV oil (around 4 letters) sells for around about $68.00 They say don't worry about changing the filter as yet till it get to 100,000 kms And some of them have done over 186000 miles (299337.984) km and yet had no trouble with there CTV So now ever 40.000 klm I be changing the CV oil

I took it in recently to get the job done and they basically told me not to do it that my car has about 50k miles left in tranny. They wanted me to trade in car for a new one. Would you still recommend doing a drain and fill on transmission or is it too risky?

In my experience with speaking to various amounts of people, the more miles your CVT has on it without being properly maintained the more likely problems are to occur when messed with at an old age of mileage. I would personally drive the car till it dies and get your money's worth out of it. If you only have about 50,000 miles left, then drive with full anticipation of those 50,000 miles and be saving up a decent down payment for another car in the process.
Everyone will have their own way of dealing with this, but this would be my action if I was in your shoes.

That being said I have a 2007 Nissan Versa with CVT with 188,000 miles on it still going strong except for needing a new catalytic converter so my check engine light stays on. You drain the transmission pan first, while car is turned off. Then you refill transmission.Should take about 4 quarts, as I've done it twice. Then, while the engine is running, wait until the transmission temperature reaches 95F-113F. At that point, open the bell housing overfill plug... wait until it's a weak steady drip. Tighten the bolt. Temperature can't exceed 113F during this procedure. Use infrared thermometer or OBD with software that measures trans temp.

    • @pete89spotsin
      @pete89spotsin  5 лет назад +2

Transmission fluid of most types should be changed every 30 to 40,000 miles.
Transmissions that have been left alone and not maintained properly over long struts as of time 10 to have issues once they are messed with via oil change. If you are transmission has gone 150,000 mi without an oil change I will personally just leave it alone. I would also suggest getting other professional advice on this as well, perhaps a Nissan technician if you can find one that will be honest with you about oil interval changes. I find this honesty rare but it's always worth a shot.

@@engayham2420 it's true that they might say it only needs one oil change. however across the country you'll find many different opinions coming from the actual dealership on when or if you should ever change your CVT transmission fluid. I have heard never to change your fluid I have heard only at 80,000 I have heard only if it has problems.
Fact of the matter is as far as Nissan technicians are concerned no one as a solid answer which is why I continue to change my oil like any other transmission I have ever serviced. And my service interval is approximately 30,000 miles. that is what I have done for my own CVT transmission and it is to this day driving flawlessly. I myself am over 100,000 now.
As to why they would say things like once a life oil change or every 80,000 miles etc, is likely because they only expected the CVT transmission to last 200,000 mi. If you look at the service suggestions given by Nissan through Carfax, the maintenance schedule only goes as high as 200,000 miles.

The one thing, does the service manual mentions for the car to be running when the checkbolt is out? Any other car the car should be off. Usually you fill and watch it drain through the checkbolt. Then run it until warm and do the gear switch. Then shut off the car and fill again until it drips through the checkbolt. I would think that if you run the car with the checkbolt out, you'll lose more fluid, which should have been inside the transmission.

For these newer transmissions (CVT in particular) I wouldn't recommend a flush. You have such low miles you wouldn't gain anything substantial. Also flushes can at times be a more risky process for your transmission, due to the manufactures design.
I would simply do a pan drain and refill. Watch my video on how to be sure the level is correct. When pulling the overfill drain plug, be sure your engine is running BEFORE you pull the secondary plug, or the oil level will not be accurate.
If nothing comes out, you do not have enough oil in your pan. you should see a small trickle of oil if the level is proper.

      @@andrewybarra2304 most likely, yes.
What happens when the engine is running is when you start your engine the oil level actually drops inside your trans pan due to oil being used up, up inside the trans. If the engine isn't running the fill level will be high, (giving a false high reading) cuz it's not currently in use. Thus the improper amount of oil will come out if the engine is not running.

@@pete89spotsin I agree. My Mirage is only 74 hp combined with 3cyl and only weighs 2000lbs. So that helps immensely too. 90% of the complaints are from Nissan owners with much heavier cars with much more hp. The little Mirage on average, seems to do much better.

Not so easy on 2014 maxima. I've been trying to locate the adjustment nut.

Where exactly is this adjustment drain plug for my 2014 maxima? I know where my drain plug is but not my adjustment plug.

    • @pete89spotsin
      @pete89spotsin  4 года назад

There is no adjustment plug. There is however a check bolt that you will pull out once you have filled your transmission back up with approximately 4 quarts. Before pulling the check bolt, make sure your car is level and running. You will then pull the check bolt and wait for the oil to come to a trickle as it drains out. Once it's down to just a trickle replace the check bolt.

@@pete89spotsin The location of this bolt is not the same on 09-14 Maxima as it is for an Altima. I honestly don't see it, and if it is there you can't access it without the car being jacked up with front driver side tire being off.

The Maxima will likely be a completely different engine and transmission configuration. Of witch I can not speak on. I only have the Altima and only give advice for this specific transmission (ns2)
