Im around many nissans and here is the verdict. I owned many cvt. Reality is the cvt is not the issue its humans driving it. I have not found one person with a cvt actually flush or change fluid at 30k or even 60k. I personally know people with over 200k with cvt. Key is proper maintenance.
Non-mechanics follow the manufacturers' advice which often doesn't call for regular maintenance.
@@moonrich3492 Manufactures advises is not all gospel . As a mechanic proper maintenance is the key to last longer of CVT
I work on my own stuff (whenever possible). I own everything from full size vans to a bunch of European compact cars most mechanics would not even touch.
I inherited my aunt's 2015 Nissan Rouge S last fall after she passed away. It's got less than 30K miles on it.
It's not a car I would see on a dealer's lot and say, "I really like that car even though it looks identical to everything else being built".
It runs great and the cloth firm seats are comfortable. Oddly enough, I like that it doesn't have allot of bells and whistles being an S model. All I need is a good heater, air conditioner, radio and AWD. I've got an 84 Dodge van that's a 4 speed manual without power steering, AC or anything else power.
I've heard the CVT transmissions are bad. But I am glad to know that simply changing the fluid and filter every 30K miles should keep it from crapping out. I've heard people say theirs failed as low as 40,000 miles and others have said they have well over 100,000 miles on theirs. Like you say it must be a maintenance thing and of course how you drive it.
The 170 hp 2.5 engine doesn't feel as peppy as I would expect it would. I got an 80 hp 1977 MGB with a pushrod engine, 4 speed manual, carbureted and I swear it feels more powerful than this thing does. Maybe I'm just afraid to give the Nissan hell when driving it!
Thanks for confirming everything my mechanic told me about my cvt transmission, great video too!
Change differential and transmission fluids every 30,000 miles. Our vehicles last > 250,000 miles with this schedule
Nice job!! Good to know
Is it true that if you never changed the trans fluid. And you decide to replace it with new Trans fluid that it will not operate properly? This is what I was told from the dealership
@@Gmblrxfe Dealerships do not want vehicles to last beyond the power train warranty. I want mine to last at least 250,000 miles!
thank you for the valuable information. I am surprised to see "Warming up" is a thing again with CVTs
Thank you for the very helpful information. Great video.❤
Welcome!
Very informative. I had a 2019 Prius with the CVT and got over 70k miles, no issues what so ever. Good point on changing the fluid every 30k.
prius has a ECVT not a CVT though it requires fluid replacement only the interval is longer
The thing with CVTs is Nissan has made them a sealed transmission with no dipstick to check the levels. All you can do is check for leaks and hope the garage fills it properly
True
Nothing at the dealership is free except the coffee.
That’s not free it’s added to ur bill as fees lol
SIKE!!! That express service oil change price had free coffee into account
They don’t have free coffee at my closest dealer. It’s in a vending machine.
My friend every video is super good I learned how do everything in my car with you
Yeah bro more comming he’ll of moreee video I’m mad tho why I didn’t do this type videos before I learned lot in school when I went to mechanic school all books smart. I got oxygen sensor video comming and catalytic u gotta watch those
Have done all and it had a dramatic effect Also do check Variable speed sensor
I'm afraid to take my car to a dealer for service/update. It may run better broken than it would after they "fix" it.
my thoughts exactly 😂
I worked at auto dealers ships only worse criminals is our politicians that are owned by our criminal corporations think about it!!!! 76 year old mechanic.
This taught me everting I needed to know. About why the transmission felt so off. I’m not a huge car dude. But I know some stuff. But this cleared it all up. Thank you good sir l. Great video
Glad I could help
Thanks for another great video, you saved me a lot of time and money when I was doing it by myself. My teenager daughter driving 2014 Sentra and I showed her all these tips make sure she was following it. Any chances you have video how to change transmission fluid on 2014 Nissan Sentra? I can't find it in your selection. Thanks, man!!!
No I don’t have it on Sentra sorry
Thank you for the info. I have a Toyota Corolla cvt transmission. 2016 Corolla ❤️😊
Cool that are fit difficult to flush
Thank you for making this video.
Welcome
Thank you for this . Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Like many things, babying it will prevent premature failure.
********* I agree with you 100% , My Subaru manual states " No maintenance necessary on my CVT Transmission, ( I BET BTHEY SELL MANY ) **************
Thanks for this info. I'm about to buy a Subaru Forester 2014 and I'm worried about the CVT. So helpful
No problem 👍
Awesome vid. Thanks
Thank you
Thanks bro for the knowledge shared.
My pleasure
You did well thank you...
Thank u
I’m at 205K now. The key is to drain and refill according to specs AND I don’t tow (vehicle is not designed to tow beyond 1500 lbs).
Yup
You are awesome!
Thank u!!!
I plan to keep my Nissan NV200 cargo van with CVT transmission for a long time. I change the fluid myself every 15K which is a lot but now Castrol makes the Transmax for CVT for only around $16 per gallon. It makes frequent changes real cheap now. And yes Castrol has real high ratings too.
@@philc.9280 yeah go for it
Great video thank you!..
On my 2013 Accord and only on long highway trips.. my AC barely works.. doesn’t blow as cold and is weak coming out…. The next day, works fine.. what could it be?
Might be low on Freon have it reserviced
Nice demo with the pen.
Yup
Great video. I own (2) Honda’s. A 2017 Civic EXT and a 2016 Accord EX-L V6.
I changed the Civics transmission fluid out at 48k. I used Amsoil. It cost a little more but has better heat tolerance than the Honda brand. I definitely felt the difference after the change.
I do have a question. Do you recommend changing the 2 filters O rings and pan gasket? If so at what intervals?
I would change the filter at 90k
I also use Amsoil CVT fluid in my 2016 HR-V but I change it at 30K miles. This transmission has presented no problems at all since I bought the car new. There was a recall in which Honda checked the transmission for any damage, then re-programmed the software and extended the warranty on it to 150K miles. Love it!
Excellent info, thanks. I was considering a 2024 Honda HRV to replace my 2012 Honda Fit Sport, but I’ll either have some repairs done on it or purchase a Mazda CX-5 with geared automatic. I’ll never trust any CVT.
I think CVT is OK for light use in a passenger car and the fluid is changed regularly.
However, the regular automatic transmissions are much more durable and reliable.
From what I've read and experienced, as long as the fluid is changed regularly with quality full synthetic ATF, the filter will not need to be changed. However, if you don't know the transmission's history, I would definitely change the filter. This is what I've done and I've never had a problem. @@jonboz7585
Good video ❤
Thanks 😁
Great video. Definitely good advice on the fluid change schedules. Thank you.
Thank you bro

good job!
Thanks!
This is a big concern for new Honda owners. More videos on this topic would help.
Yupp I will do more video and I have flushes and filter change video on these Hondas cvt
@@RBTheMechanic a video on the reliability of Honda CVTs would do big numbers.

I'm looking at a 2011 Nissan Rogue SV AWD and am doing my research, especially considering in the ad they mention it decelerating when it gets to about 65-75 mph... I looked at it and drove fine with the test drive, it has the black trans cooler installed already, and has had the fluid changed a few hundred miles ago, has 80k on the clock, new battery... I wonder what else can be done...
Didn’t understand what’s the issue
@@RBTheMechanic After all that's been done to it (fluid change, cooler, computer reset assuming disconnecting the battery does it on that car, etc) and for it to still have the issue periodically, what else can be done? Is it worth it at any price? Should CVT trans just be avoided?
They also highly recommend to put transmission cooler to protect CVT transmission. Between Tube and fins or plate and fins cooler which one is good? ?
Fines would be better choice more cooling
@@RBTheMechanic both have fins but there is one with tube of 8 pass and has fins while the other is plate and fins. For example hyden transmission cooler part number 516 and 679 which one is more efficient in cooling?
@@edwinalexander1170 I can’t locate the part number u got links I’ll take a look
@@RBTheMechanichyden part number 526 with moving fan is this good?
Great video I have a Honda Civic Saloon 2020 with CVT in UK I want to keep the car for a long time ie 15 to 20 years if possible, would you say Honda CVT are reliable for that long , as. Long as I follow the service schedule, and take your advice 👍
Not the best transmissions but keep the fluid changes on time and go easy on transmission should last u long time
Thanks for the reply, I guess Honda do make reliable CVTs
My Honda has a CVT and is 18 years old and still working well. It has had problems at times with start clutch judder, but the newer models use a convertional torque converter. I change the CVT fluid every 2-3 years, let it warm up gently, and don't drive it hard.
Thanks for the info👍
I recently bought a 2014 Nissan Altima and so far it’s running fine. But I wanted to check the transmission fluid. I can’t get the dipstick out. Do I have to take it to a dealership to add fluid in. I’m a recent widow so I know very little about cars. But I’m trying to learn. Thank you for any info you can give me
First of all u shouldn’t have to add fluid, is there reason why u want to add ? I ask because there’s process to add and check which not everyone can do at home something like this leave it to mechanic shop but u can ask me anything you like I usully get back every day but to get the dipstick it u have to move the clip there push on it to release it but don’t ass without know the level u don’t want to over flow and damage it
No there’s no reason. The car is running fine. I just thought it was like checking your oil. So you never should have to add transmission fluid? And one more question, I bought the car a couple of months ago and had no need to put the air conditioner on but I recently did put it on and it doesn’t seem to be blowing cold. Where do I start with finding out what might be wrong? That you for your knowledgeably input.
It's super funny at point 4 you mentioned a slop of almost 45 degrees! 🤣Be careful guy! The world's steepest street is in NZ, and its steepest section is 19 degrees. Garages or driveway can be different but can't be too far from that. Look can be deceiving. Apart from that! Cool advices!
Yup
¿Llevaste matemáticas en la escuela?
Yes mate, maths and physics as well. But I don't get why we need maths here.
2019 civic coupe ex-t. I changed mine at 20,000 miles, and again at 40,000. Almost at 60,000 now. Honda guys are going to go crazy...but i use castrol cvt fluid. I also use a cvt conditioner. At 60,000 ill do both filters, and clean up the pan etc. Also adding a cvt cooler come spring time. Its so cold where i live i really dont see the point right now. Ive always been a fan of castrol products. I use their oil, brake fluid, now transmission fluid. I like to keep up on my car. Maybe its overkill, but i do plugs once a year, air filter 2x a year, change my oil every 3500 miles. Clean the maf 4x a year. Clean the throttle body every spring and late fall. Keep my car super clean and protected. Fluid film black undercoating every fall. Ceramic coating for the paint, then lots of wax over that. Every time i wash it i dry with a large soft microfiber towel and tec582. All season mats to keep moister away from the carpets and rusting out those areas. I keep damp rid containers in the trunk, and one under the seat. Im sure the transmission wont make it past 250,000 but i want to try. I might buy a spare from a lower mileage car just to have. Theyre only around $700 right now. Plus I save by doing my own work. Be nice just to have it before prices go up once all these CVTs start to fail in the 10th gens from people being stupid.
U did lot and some too fast erly
@@RBTheMechanic I figure it's not hurting anything. Oh and when I switched over to Castrol I made sure to do several drain and fills to get all the OEM hcf-2 out. I contacted Castrol and that was their recommendation anyway. I know I do things way too early, I just enjoy it. Thinks like plugs and filters aren't that expensive, especially from Rockauto. Anything to keep this car going. I always wanted the coupe, and when I finally got one I told myself I would do everything I can to keep it looking and running like new that I could. Just waiting for my injectors to go out lol. I run too tier 93 octane , and I'm always tossing in FIC. If the cleaner is actually working we'll see. Same with my crc intake valve and turbo cleaner. I do that a few times a year too right before an oil change.
@@vermontvermont9292 yeah I did things Ery on my honda it still running like new
At my normal driving rate, it would take 9 years to hit 30K miles, so I'm thinking every 3 years or 30K miles change the CVT fluid, because all auto fluids degrade of time for a variety of reasons. Same reason why I change my oil every 6 months, even though that is only about 1700 miles driven.
dfor nissan rogue, do u use nissan tran fluid or other brand? what about changing filters? change or leave alone
Use original Nissan fluid and filter u can change after like 3-4 flud changes then proceed doing filter
I read on a forum that you shouldnt flush the CVt transmission because flushing affects the seals. Is this true or is this only for some specific model. Your advise to flush, is this specifically for honda models?
No it’s fine to flush is just keep it up to date some people don’t rush for years and 100k miles then it’s a issue especially before cvt automatic transmission
Hey, boss, what do you think about this CVT addictives like Lubegard? Would it help more?
I don’t think so
For tip #1, how many RPM do you recommend maximum? For tip #2, how many minutes do you recommend?
Rpm I would say stay normal shift RPM like Automatic transmission Close to 2,700 and no time frame give it good 10 minutes
I’ve got a 2020 Infiniti QX60 FWD with 51k miles. I use Amsoil for the engine every 5k miles 30k for the transmission. it’s got that stupid Jatco CVT from Nissan. When I bought my 2017, Hyundai accent people told me that it was a throw away lighter 155K miles and it’s still running strong. You think I could get at least 200K from the QX 60?
That would be if ur very luckyyy they don’t usully go that far
It’s all about luck. For example I still have my 2010 Dodge Caliber SXT that I got back in 2012. It currently has almost 130k miles. Original transmission and never had an oil change (for the cvts back then the manufacturer said the oil should last at least the complete life service of the transmission). However, for having 130k miles on it and never changed the oil, it has worked pretty well. I think this Jatco on my caliber was one of a kind. Hope it gets to 200k someday
How to check the fluid level on cvt transmission for a 2014 Sentra? Thanks.
I have to check and look in to that if it got dipstick most of them got it not sure about the new ones I will check next time I get a sentra
Hello sir! Can you tell me something about the nissan cvt transmission on nissan juke?
Thanks
Same thing. What u wanna know tho
A flush? Scotty kilmer doesnt recommend flushing, only draining and filling, changing filters.
Drain and fill is what I do maybe i said it in a way watch all of my videos
I dont know a lot about cvt but i think all or almost all of the fluid comes out on a cvt transmission when you drain it so i guess on a cvt flush or drain end up being the same 🤷♂️
I have a 2018 civic cvt with 18k miles on it. Should I do my first change at 20k like the dealer told me, or wait until 30k? Should I just do a fluid change or should I do a flush as well? Thanks!
30k change intervals should be just fine. But if you are doing mainly city driving and plan on keeping the car many years then 25k would suit you better. Use only Honda CVT recommended fluid. Personally just change fluid with recommended fluid quantity and call it good.
Do it at 20k even better then continue to do it at 20 every 20k
@@RBTheMechanic drain and fill, or flush too?
@@tommydukes1979 drain and fill keep it up to date u shouldn’t have to flush there’s also filter u can do after 3 flushes

So on high way when i overtake i should not flourish the acceleration pedal ? ? ?
U can but smoothly if ur jamming it it wount just go 0 to 300mph it will take its time slow increments
Drive your car like a scooter
If it's a dangerous situation then yes you need to floor it when you have to, just dont floor it when you dont need to
How can you warm up your transmission without driving?
It spins the fluid as it idles torque converter!!
Sorry, I didn't get it. Isn't the torque converter on the input side? When it idles, it heats up the torque converter for sure. But it doesn't do anything to the transmission.@@RBTheMechanic
Whatever happened to the regular good-old Automatic Transmission??, that you can throw it in reverse backup 10ft., Slam on the break and drive!, and then back up another 10 ft. etc.???
CVT=Continued Valueless Transmission
Lmao that’s a good name and that electrical throttle body dosent allow u to slam the peddle
You obviously never drove an 80's or 90's Dodge/Chrysler. Lol
Why did they even make cvt transmissions if they aren’t any good. Now I’m hella worried. Just bought a 2014 Nissan Altima!!!
@@debragonzalez9800 Don't mind helping you, please tell me, is it the 2.5L 4 cylinder or the 3.5L V6?
It’s not a 4 cylinder. Its a v6
Never had a problem. Going on 7 years
Nice!!!
you are the luckiest person in the world
Drive a CVT conservatively and have them serviced on a regular basis as you should, and you will be fine. The Japanese do not know how Americans especially young Americans drive and they do not have their vehicles serviced as they should, and failures are the result.
Flushing transmission fluid is not a good idea at all.
warmup how long???
10-12 minutes
They created the ctv to save on fuel cost and performance yet you have run your car 10 to 12 minutes of fuel before you go. Well mpg is gonna be real great isn't.
So how do you warm up a transmission?
Let it run it will warm up from engine heat
Toyota dealers refuse to change cvt fluid prior to 60k miles
They will void ur warrnty if u don’t do it every 30k so u can’t win with them
I have a 2015 Toyota Corolla S with a cvt transmission i drain and fill the cvt transmissions fluid every 50,000 miles, the car now has 185,000 miles on the odometer and it runs like the day i purchased it
Yup good !!
If you have to baby a cvt what the hell good are they
@@donaldotsig6818 baby dosent mean not drive it and slapping the peddle like its formula 1 car is not the way. Just with some common sense take care so you don’t have to cry like a baby when it brakes down and not be able to afford new transmission or repairs for it
@@RBTheMechanic Ive had many muscle cars in my life and yes sometimes you want to put the peddle to the metal prove to me that they will last as long as a conventional auo or standard trany and i will buy one.And belive you me i know what baby is lol

Yup
Basically CVTs are not for the average knucklehead driver. Certainly introducing them to the US was asking for trouble.
This CVT junk don’t even go out of my back yard in reverse it has 20degree slope I hade to turn the car around to come out.
I ran 260,000 miles on my Altima with no trans fluid flushed or change and is running like a champion. BELIEVE IT OR NOT.
Nice!!!
Want a free CVT software update? Call the dealer and tell them b____t.
Yeah
If they know CVT transmission is problem why they keep doing it means money pit.
Yup they don’t care after 60k miles warranty is over
Thanks for the information but it still sounds like the vehicles with the CVT transmissions are UNRELIABLE!
Yup and revers is weak
No flush. drain and fill.
Ok
There should be a #6: Don’t use your CVT vehicle to tow anything. That transmission is not meant for towing.
Ok
A lot of people don't flush.
Yup then they wonder what went wrong
I hate cvt transmission....
Yeah they r smooth and fast but they brake down and very weak reverse
4:52 5,000 miles out of your pocket?? Huh?
True facts .And dont buy a truck with one if you plan on pulling with it .Its so ridiculous they came up with a way to make 6 thousand to 15 thousnad to fix most .Its a joke ...
Don't abuse it? Come on, during certain traffic situation, you have to punch it or cause an accident. I had to punch my CVT once and it just screamed, and the computer prevent it from redlining. I believe cars are designed to handle this, as long as you don't drag race it every other day. So what is abuse that you are talking about?
Trust me people floor it
Why all these cvts everything is getting cheaper😮
I don’t like these
7:45 NEVER as in NEVER Flush a CVT...................NEVER.....drain and fill
Ok
If you want your transmission to last don't buy a CVT, but if you decide you want that car make sure is not a Nissan with CVT.
