Living in the area at the time, we were all very aware of the Back to the Future 3 production. As soon as the film wrapped, we were looking to get access and check things out. Eventually we did - and were fortunate to have one of the productions' extras along for the tour to help us out. This video was taken before we had seen the completed film.
The clock tower was lost to wind damage, but virtually everything else, including the saloon, iconic train depot, bank, butcher shop, jail, undertaker, Joe Statler's horse stables, and Doc Brown's workshop, remained for our visit.
This film set was located on Red Hills Ranch near the town of Sonora, California.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this set visit! Like and subscribe!

I attended a public event not long after filming wrapped. In fact, the saloon still had a Happy Birthday stringer hanging that had been for Michael J. Fox! They served us sarsparilla (root beer) at the bar, The train was also fully functioning, taking folks into Jamestown and I think, Columbia, California.

Some of these sets are recreations of actual buildings from the 1800's that still exist. The train station, Doc's barn, the Well Fargo building, and the bar. Most of which is actually in Columbia except for the train station which is in Jamestown. The actual buildings aren't set up this way and in some cases are surrounded by modern day buildings that wouldn't have been around back in the 1800's so they built these sets for establishing shots and action sequences that they couldn't film at the historical on sight locations. The sets may be gone but the real buildings they were based on still exist. Jamestown, Sonora, and Columbia are all part of Tuolumne County where most of the movie was filmed.
There's also a fake train caboose which they built specifically for the action scenes because it was too dangerous to actually have Micheal J. Fox on the back of a moving train. I have a video showing the actual train station on my channel cause I live close enough to walk there.

The movie was filmed in 1989, back to back with Back to the Future II. Back to the Future III was released in theaters in 1990.
